As long as you continue to use file sharing/P2P programs (like Limewire), you're likely to encounter problems.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

thanks

is there a way or program to share files safely?

In my opinion, no, though there are some that would argue with that.

Not only does file sharing (aka P2P) ultimately lead to infections, it is illegal to 'share' most software.

And, it's against the rules of this site to assist with file sharing anyway:

Lesson learned on the dangers of file sharing? :)

Scan with HJT and have it fix the following entries:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus...rch/search.html
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =

Be sure to close all windows before hitting the Fix button.

Reboot, close all browser windows, scan with HJT, and post a new log please.

Hi, So Since the red washer is on the top side of mobo, I'm good to go? Getting ready to turn it on and see how it goes.

Catweazle, if the red (fiber) washer is on the top side of the mobo, under the screw head, how can it ground properly?

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Oh! Good question!

My thoughts are that you should NEVER use metal washers of any form when fitting a motherboard.

If you are using a case which has metal 'stand-offs', I'd advise that you religiously use fibre washers between the stand-off and the underside of the motherboard.

Also be careful that you use screws that don't have large heads for locations where the circuitboard tracks come realy close to the mounting hole.

How can you get fibre washers to stay in place on the metal standoffs while putting the motherboard in place? Glue them on?

Maybe I haven't seen enough motherboards, but all of them I've seen have large bonded surfaces, larger than any screw head would ever be.

But that does bring up another point, if the mounting holes are bonded, using a non-metal washer would prevent the board from being grounded properly.

I always use screws that have a head that looks like it has a washer, but it's actually all one piece.

My company is currently evaluating/pilotting this software to possibly remove all virus software (definition based 3 day instead of 0 day protection) from our corporate users.

If you read more about the software you will see it has merit to help get rid of these issues with spyware, viruses and other stuff except for java and macro but updates can usually take care of those for you.

Here is the deal the freeze x does not allow anything to install on your computer except from an approved media that you put in the settings. If you want to download something and install it you first have to turn freeze x off. (if you are running freeze x only) if you are running deep freeze you have to have a thawed area or everything that was not on your computer during your last freeze with deep freeze will be gone.

I would like others to take a look at this software I have given a 100k foot overview of some of the things it can do. Please take a look and let me know what you think.

Thanks,

I've talked to my instructor (in Network Security) and we're going to try these out in class to see how/if they work. Not a full evaluation, mind you, just an 'overview' kind of review. I'll let you know what the students (and instructor) think.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Are you talking about using washers under the heads of the screws to attach the motherboard?

If so, it shouldn't really matter as long as you don't overtighten the screws. Using washers, however, or screws with wide heads will reduce the chance of damage.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

No risk, but if you have FAT on the computer you put it in, and NTFS on the one you put in as a slave, you won't be able to see it.

I am running windows XP and would like to reformat my computer but I have never done this before, how do you go about doing it?Any tips or help would be great!!!
My system is older here is the specks.
Microsoft windows XP
Home edition
service pack 1

AMD Athlon Xp 1600
1.39GHz
128 MB off Ram

Thanks Ally

Hey Ally, you can find complete instructions here:
http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread6632.html

You will see a noticable difference with more RAM; Microsoft claims you can use XP (even with SP2) with 64MB. I actually tried it on a laptop and it does run, but you wouldn't want to use it that way! 256 is a more 'acceptable' minimum.

As mentioned before, you should try to get as many updates, etc. as possible before you reformat. You may find some helpful advice here:
http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread16365.html

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

right on. thank you. it doesnt make any sense to me that w2k doesnt come with that.

Nor to anyone else that I know of. I wonder if it does to Microsoft

I don't have time to go through your log right now, just some general advice here.

I see you have SpywareGaurd, if you haven't already, you should also get SpywareBlaster. Keep them updated and protection enabled to help prevent infections.

If you have a system, such as eMachines, which doesn't offer BIOS updates on the website, you need to identify the make and model of the motherboard used in the system. (eMachines just assembles the things - they don't make the motherboards). The motherboard manufacturer's website is the place to get BIOS updates. An update obtained from the BIOS manufacturer's website is next to useless, because it will not contain any specialised enhancements to suit the components used to make the motherboard.

I wasn't aware of that, but it makes sense.

I told you we needed your expertise here! :)

If your on Windows 2000 you need to download msconfig.exe, you can get a copy of it at:

As long as you use file sharing programs (P2P) such as Kazaa, you're likely to encounter problems.

Go to Add/Remove Programs in your Control Panel and remove Viewpoint Manager.

Scan with HJT and have it fix:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
(Close all windows other than HJT before hitting the Fix button)

Go to:
C:\Program Files and delete the Viewpoint folder.

Okay, try the Save option then -- pay attention to where it is saved to -- then go to that saved location and see if you can open it from there. Here are some additional instructions from MS:

If you save this file or program to disk, you can run it later. This allows you to take precautions, such as the following, before you open the file or run the program:

Save your work and close other programs.
Disconnect from the Internet or any other network connections.

I'm signing off for now so I won't be checking this for awhile, but someone else may pop in to help if this still doesn't work. Good luck :)

If you did select Open, what happened when you did?

lately my pc has been giving me loads of trouble even though i can fix these its still annoying, yet theres 2 problems i cannot solve.

1. whenever i try to boot in safe mode, even without networking my computer will restart after i have chosen the user, it works perfect on a normal boot.

2. whenever i try to play conquer online, my pc will shutdown and go to a blue screen saying IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and then loads of error numbers and so on. it recommended that i disable BIOS features such as shadowing but when i enter BIOS and go to advanced, there are no such options. i have seen screen shots of how to do it, but non of the options are on my pc, im running an emachines computer if that helps. any help would be great. thanks

In order to help prevent all these annoying problems, follow the advice in these threads:
http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread16365.html
http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread5690.html

Have you tried using System Restore to a date before you started having these problems (assuming you're using XP or Me)?

You need to find out what BIOS you have (AMI, Phoenix, etc.), and then go to their website for updates. Some manufactures have it on their own website; eMachines didn't used to, I don't know if they do now.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Try winsockfix from here:
http://www.digitalminds.net/index.pl/downloads

If it still doesn't work, go to Start, Run, and type in cmd, click OK. Type in ipconfig/all and post the information that comes up.

pi1.exe is bad and should be removed; check for these too as they are usually related:
iebhos.dll
e2g

This 59kd53fg.exe.tcf looks bad to me as well.

To get to the Registry Editor, go to Start, Run, and type in regedit; click OK and the Registry Editor will open.

Before you edit the registry, you should make a backup. At the top of the Registry window, click on the Registry menu, click Export Registry File. In the Export range panel, click All, then save your registry as Backup.

Make the changes you want, and then exit the Registry Editor.

Whatever you disable from STARTUP will not run automatically when Windows starts, but it/they will still be on your system.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

You know, it shouldn't make any difference, but try it this way:
Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel; double-click Folder Options, and then click on the View tab. See if you have the options there to 'Show hidden files,' and turn off 'Hide protected system files.'

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Do you have 'Show hidden files...' enabled?

Personally, I think all three of those should be removed; but, since I'm not sure, you should wait for confirmation from someone else before doing so.

IF you do decide to delete them, set a System Restore Point first. And, before you make any changes to your Registry, make a backup copy.

Crunchie had a good idea (as usual); set a System Restore point, and then delete the bad entries, explorer_cab (make sure you delete only the ones with the underscore " _ ").

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

I didn't expect Stinger to find it, but I was hoping.

Downloader.Small is a fairly common trojan (with different numbers and letters at the end), but they are usually in a different folder than the one you described. I've never seen C\explorer_cab (it should be C\explorer.cab), and can't find any info on it.

I'm thinking this whole folder, explorer_cab.vir:, should be deleted; but let's have someone else confirm this before you do it.
