If it's been formatted it doesn't matter. But make sure your jumpers are set correctly; you have two choices: you either need to set both for Cable Select (CS), or (generally preferred) set the Master drive (the drive with the OS) to Master (MA) and the Slave drive (your storage drive) set to Slave (SL).

In either configuration, the Master drive should be connected to the end of the cable, and the slave at the center connector.

Here are a few more...

The jumper settings won't work the way you have described; you either need to set both for Cable Select (CS), or -- generally preferred -- with the jumper for the Master drive set to Master (MA) and the Slave drive set to, you guessed it, Slave (SL)!

In either configuration, the Master drive should be connected to the end of the cable, and the slave at the center connector.

You can find instructions for Windows XP here:

If you have a different OS you want to install, which one?

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Here is one thread discussing browsers:
http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread9561-best+browser.html

There are others if you do a search for them. I've read several of them and the consesus seems to be Mozilla as the primary browser, with Internet Explorer also installed as a backup because some sites won't work with Mozilla, and you can't get Windows Updates if you don't have I.E.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Oops! you were posting while I was! But now you have it directly on your desktop which isn't any better. Sorry this is turning into so much trouble, please read the following to explain why and how to put HJT in a suitable folder:

Roxie, the last log you posted still shows your HJT in a temp folder, if you have moved it into a permanent folder since then, please post a new log. This is for your safety as HJT needs to be in a permanent folder in order to safely save backups in case something goes wrong. Here are crunchie's instructions for doing this (if you haven't already):
Click My Computer, then C:\
In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis". Now you have C:\HJT\ folder. Put your HijackThis.exe there, and double click to run it.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

THANX! That has helped out many of my teachers here.

Helped out your teachers how? Where are you located?

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

luckily my car does 43mpg (that's a uk gallon....)
I probably shouldn't ask what yours does..

What's the difference between a UK gallon and a US gallon? I thought you used liters there? I get about 21 mpg in mine.

(Thanks to whoever modified my title :))

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Roxie, you need to post your HJT log in the Security forum (there is a notice about this at the top of the forum).

Oh, and put it in a permanent folder first (like c:\hjt\hijackthis.exe) so it can safely save backups! And close all browser windows before scanning with it.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

You shouldn't need to post another log unless you start having problems. Before you start having trouble, get all your Critical Updates from Windows Update (including SP2) and get SpywareBlaster (link in crunchie's signature or here: http://daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread5690.html), keep it updated and have it enable all protection.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

...what does malware mean?

Malware would be anything on your computer that doesn't belong there: virus, trojan, worm, spyware, adware, keystroke logger, etc., etc., etc....

You should wait until crunchie gives you the 'log clean' signal before getting SP2.

After you complete the recommendations made so far, post a new log.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

You can't move it, you would have to post a new one. A moderator should move it, but sometimes things get overlooked -- they're only human after all, not error-free like computers! ;)

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Go to this thread and follow all the recommendations, CWShredder in particular:
http://daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread5690.html

Note: if you end up needing to post a HijackThis log (explained in that thread), please post it in the Security forum.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

First of all, you need to find a way to back up any data you don't want to lose because sooner or later something will happen to cause you to lose it. You can get a CD burner or even a flash drive -- anything is better then nothing!

Go to this thread and follow the recommendations to help make sure you system is clean:
http://daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread5690.html

You will probably need to post a HijackThis log (explained in that thread), if so, please post it in the Security forum.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

I'm not familiar with this problem so I don't know if this will work, but have you tried it in Safe Mode?

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

A few possibilities:

Overheating
Malware (ie, virus)
Memory problem

Possible solutions:

Have you cleaned inside your computer lately? Use caution, and a wrist strap, when doing this to avoid damage. Make sure all the fans are clean, running, and not making any funny noises (Power Supply fan, CPU fan, and case fan).

Follow the recommendations and instructions in the links below (in my signature block) to help protect and cleanup your system.

Does your computer report the actual amount of RAM you have installed? Have you added any recently? Sometimes just removing RAM and reinstalling it helps.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

You should first try booting into Safe Mode and running the programs you mentioned. While in Safe Mode, delete the contents of all Temp and Temporary Internet folders for all users. Also, do a search for *.tmp and delete all those files as well.

Reboot normally and go to this thread and follow any of the recommendations you haven't already tried:
http://daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread5690.html

After that, post a hijackthis log in the Security forum (even if it doesn't look 'normal').

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

I'm not an expert on Mac's, but I believe you need a third-party program to do this, like Norton SystemWorks. Check this link to see if you really need to defrag:

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

You also need to go to Windows Update and get all the Critical Updates for your system (but don't get SP2 until you're sure you have all the malware removed).

I'm not sure about this, but I believe SpyBot is waiting for you to reboot to fix a few more problems.

1. As long as you have Kazaa and other P2P programs installed, they will continue to create problems. Go to Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel and remove them. Run Kazaabegone from here to be sure all remnants of kazaa have been removed:
http://www.spychecker.com/program/kazaagone.html

2. Go to Windows Update to get all the Critical Updates for your system (don't get SP2 until after you have cleared your system of malware).

3. Before you fix anything with hijackthis, it needs to be put in a permanent folder so it can safely save backups (like c:\hjt\hijackthis.exe); right now you have it in a temp folder.

4. After you put HJT in a different folder, reboot into Safe Mode and empty the contents of all Temp and Temporary Internet folders for all users, and then reboot normally.

5. Go to Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel and remove Web Rebates.

6. Follow the recommendations in this thread to clean up most of the remaining problems:
http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread5690.html

7. Close all windows, scan with HJT, and post a new log.

Since you now have a new problem that is unrelated to the title of this thread, you will probably get better assistance if you post a new thread. You should also include whether you are using Windows 2000 or Windows XP. Do you want a dual-boot (98 and Win2K/WinXP)?

Did you delete VVSN while in Safe Mode as instructed in post #35?

As you thought, you should have enough free space available and sufficient RAM for Win98. Maybe that VVSN is causing the problem.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

I don't get this, as I should have enough memory.

How much RAM do you have? Also, how much free space do you have on your hard drive?

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Try booting into Safe Mode and clearing all the temp stuff from there.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

You have a ton of malware lurking in your Temp folder(s), that's probably why they keep "respawning." Follow these instructions to clean it up:

Open Windows Explorer, go to Tools, Folder Options, View, and select "Show hidden files and folders", and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files".

For every user account listed under C:\Documents and Settings, delete the entire contents of these folders:

Local Settings\Temp
Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5
Cookies
History

Delete the contents of your C:\Windows\Temp folder.

(If you get any messages concerning the deletion of system files such as desktop.ini or index.dat, just choose to delete those files; they'll be automatically regenerated by Windows if needed.)

Do a search for *.tmp and delete everything found.

Empty your Recycle Bin. All this should be done on a regular basis.

Go to this thread for instructions on fixing your bridge.dll problem:
http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread7370.html

Reboot, close all windows, scan with HJT, and post a new log.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Frenzy, you need to start a new thread instead of tagging on to someone else's. Before you do that though, you need to update your version of hijackthis; there is an Update feature in it, or you can get it here:
http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/x-Download-5034.html

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Crunchie did confirm it (post #36). How is your computer running now? Still having problems? If so, please post another log along with a description.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

You are running hijackthis from your desktop, in order for it to safely save backups, it needs to be in a permanent folder (like c:\hjt\hijackthis.exe).

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

You can safely delete all the temporary files found using the *.tmp search as they're not needed (especially if they're that old!). But leaving them shouldn't hurt anything if they don't appear to be causing you any trouble.

However, you still have malware lurking in your temp folder, follow these instructions to get rid of it:
Open Windows Explorer, go to Tools, Folder Options, View, select "Show hidden files and folders", and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files".

Empty your Recycle Bin.

Did you try to remove the programs suggested earlier? They're still showing in your log.

Before you fix anything with HJT, it needs to be in a permanent folder so it can save backups safely. Your new version is in a temp folder (your older version was in a permanent folder).

If I understand hijacking correctly, my internet homepage would have been changed, right?

Homepage hijacking is definitely one symptom of spyware, but certainly not the only one. Spyware (and adware) can be on your computer without you even knowing it -- for awile anyway; eventually it starts causing problems that let you know something's wrong.

This thread should help you get your bridge error fixed:

I can't help you with the other problem.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

This thread should fix your bridge error:
http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread7370.html

After that, go to Add/Remove Programs in your Control Panel and remove WebRebates and WindUpdates.

Empty all Temp folders and Temporary Internet folders for all users (keith in particular). Do a search for *.tmp and delete everything found.

There's still more to do, so after you update HJT close all browser windows, scan again, and post a new log.

I think it is possible for adware and spyware to do this as I've had it happen to me as well. I can offer some tips to help clean up your system and to help prevent it from happening.

Try to keep your History, Cookies, and Temporary Internet folders clear; if there are sites you wish to revisit, put them in your Favorites list. You can delete them when you no longer use them.

Regularly clean out all Temp folders and do a Search for *.tmp and delete all those as well.

Make sure you keep Windows updated with all the Critical Updates.

Install a program like SpywareBlaster to help prevent intruders (link to it in the following thread).

For more advice on cleaning up your system and keeping it clean, check this thread:
http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread5690.html

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Try this: after you enlarge it, close it using File, Close instead of the X. Next time one is opened, it should open full size. This is what has worked for me in the past.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

If you still can't get it, post another log from the version you currently have.
