Don't know what I did, but they're working now. I had to pull the mobo tray out ti install the Sata adaptor card in so I could use an IDE hdd as a backup drive, which meant that I had to unplug most of the headers on mobo. Afterwards everything began to work as it should.Go figure!?:)

:icon_biggrin: Update on build, mobo, processor, and memory came on Monday, case got here on tuesday, started pitting it togather that night. Everything went togather great. First boot came on wensday even. Had to formatt hdd and reload windows' xp. Load went very good, no hangups at all. Floppy drive wouldn't work at first, found out that the cable that came with the mobo was wired wrong, swapped cables and end of problem.
LED on front of case says that the processor is running at 34c and hdd 41c, have the cover off right now and the psu is very cool to the touch, what with the case having two fans bringing in air this baby should not have a problem staying cool.
The only problem I'm having is that the front USB ports aren't working.I've sent off an e-mail to Apevia telling them about that. Here's hoping they will send me a replacement card for that problem. Don't know if it's the cableing or the card for sure, and with no schimatic on it ,it's hard to really trouble shoot it.
Side note: the psu has way too many plugs for this small box. It has two chains of 4 plugs for compontents, both IDE and Sata.
All and all for my first build I'm very happy with it.
Mobo: intel micro atx DQ965gf
Processor: intel pentium 4@3.2ghz
Memory: 2gb DDr2
Hdd:WD 500gb Sata

dewabo 16 Junior Poster

Let me add a rule of tumb here, in the power chain, whatever compontent requires the most power will take it and everything else in the chain will settle for what's left. A 275w psu is doing double duty trying to power a 400w requirement. It is also a fire hazard. A 550w or even a 600w psu would be better suited for the job.
Just another through, some of that fliking could be caused by the lighting system in the stores.

dewabo 16 Junior Poster

Sounds like you need to up your psu to 400ws or better. you are 125watts short for the graphics card needs. A 500w psu should help the problem.

I made a booboo. Noise is a line though the center of your screen, trace is a line that runs vertially from left to right on your screen.:$

dewabo 16 Junior Poster

Do you have an onboard graphics caed or a plug in? If it's an onboard graphics then you should go to the manufactuers' web site and do an update for it.Most LCD monitors don't have that problem, it sounds like a trace peoblem and the update may take care of it.Most noise patterns are verial lines, with your's it sounds as though they are horzonal and that is trace problems.

do you have access to another puter, if so pull your hd out and slave in the other one. If you can access it do a backup of the data on it so as not to lose that. Do you know if you have a partition on that hd. ?
Let's back up a minute, can you get it up in safe mode? If you can, access the hd anddo a backup of your data. If you have the disc that the programs for that HP, then use them to do a repair on the os. If you didn't get any disc with the puter when you brought it call HP support @ 1-800-474-6836 and ask for the disc, they are less than 30$us ahd they will get them to you in about 48 hrs. You will need model #, serial # and system #.Of course they will try to sell you a new machine instead. If you can't access your hd then more than likely your hd has crashed and burned, and you will then have to call HP for those disc. Good luck, and let us know how things go.

what is a bad registery entry and how do you id such an entery?
There are a lot of registery cleaner programs out here that will scan and list your registery, just ran one on this machine and it founf 19hunderd invalid entry, it did list them but I couldn't tell a bad entry from a good one. That's the reason for this question.

I'm tring to extract the drivers for the intel82801DB controller. Read a white paper on that chip on the intel site and appanently they had a fairly high failure rate on these chips so now you can't get the driver from them.I'mfairly sure that it is on those disc that HP sent me but when I try to load those to the computer it give me " These recovery disc aren't for this computer". I really DON'T know what I'm looking for on those disc, just giving it a try. This chip controlls the primary and secondary IDE bus'.Neither the cd burner nor the dvd rom works on this machine at this time.
Don't know I'm tring to get this machine up, should have the parts for my new machine this week, and if all goes well, I'll be on it by next weekend. this is just something to do till that comes in.

Got a couple of questions for you guys. First I just came in from PCSTATs.com where I was reading up on building your computer. Sense this will be my first build and from reading the threads here, how often should I test the unit and at what stages? PCStats built the complete unit before powering up.From what I've read here I would want to test the unit after the mobo and processor and one stick of memory are installed, correct?
Sense the hdd that I'm using is in this machine now, will I have any problems when I install it in the new unit?Has it married this mobo and will I have to do a wipe clean and reinstall the os?
All parts should be here tuesday and I hope to have it built by friday and on line.Looking forward to getting this new toy. After working on aircraft for thirty years this should be simple.I'm sure it has more space to work than an F4 did in places. Worked as an aircraft mechanic for ten years on Hueys and Bell Jet Rangers then went to work for the Dept of the Navy as an aircraft electrican on both fix wing and roto-wing aircaft for twenty five years. Just through I would give yall a little background information on this "old fart".

dewabo 16 Junior Poster

:) I think we are fulfilling the goals of Daniweb with this thread.
I've ordered my parts from Newegg this morning and with shipping the total came in at 445.98$. After the 50$ mail in rebate the price will 395.98$ I stayed with the p4 cpu,the mobo will support a duo core and I might replace the P4 later. This being my first build let's see how it goes. Hoping for good time and frw or better yet no problems with it.

dewabo 16 Junior Poster

You'll right DCC about the name and and product.
To determine the size you would need is to add up the current ot the items you want to attach to the unit. The one I have has two plugs on the battery side and three plugs on the surge side. My computer and montior and computer are on battery, my printer is on the surge side. It gives me about ten minutes to shut down. The wife's unit is a bit larger and give her about the time to shut down.
When I got this machine back up a couple of years ago, I brought a refurished unit for less than 50$.
The APC site has a page that can help you on making a chose on size. With just montior and Computer using it the best one they advise is less than "c" note.

dewabo 16 Junior Poster

ok, you have answer the whys how about the hows?
So you over clock for speed, but don't that lead to a hotter unit and I through you wanted to keep temp down. It's like you put a NO2 kit on your car motor, but if you don't rework the lower end,ie crank, you'll blow it up the first time you switch it on. So to keep temps down you water cool the cpu, right?
Hey I'm learning now, so yall keep talking!:)

dewabo 16 Junior Poster

Everyone here seems to want to "over clock" their cpu. How and why do you overclock? The cpu that I have picked out runs at 3.2 ghz, I don't think I would want it any faster if it means a shorter life span. A duo core cpu would jax the price up a bit from what I was looking at.With the mail in rebate on the ram my price before shiping is 398.98$ Speaking about the case for this build, look at Newegg under micro atx motherboards and on about the last page you will an Apevia mirco atx case with a 500w power supply for 98.$, that's the one I'm going with. This is a new offer from Apevia. WWW.Apevia.com will show all theis cases. You'll love some of the wild colours they have.

Sorry DCC, but it is APC, Ijust looked at mine to be sure. here is a little electronics lab for you.
P=power in watts
I=current in amps
E=voltage in volts
R=risitance in ohms
ok if you know the rating in watts of your power supply, and you know the voltage you would use I=p divided by e answer will be amps. Lets say you have a 500w psu and you are useing 115volts you divid 500by115 and you get 4.34amps and that will tell you what size to get .
If you really want to get into the formulas used in electronics go to ask.com and put in "electronic formulas and you will a whole page of them. I had forgotten so many of them that I had to go look them up.:)

All sounds great. Here is what I'm looking at, at Newegg.
Case: Apevia w\500w psu micro ATX price 98$
mobo: Intel micro atx Bkdq965gfekr lga775 intel q965 express, it's sata and ide so I can use the cd\dvd burner and floppy disc drive and my newly purchased sata hdd.
memery: Patriot extreme perfprmance 2gb 240 pin ddr2 sdram dde2 800 (pc2 6400)
Processor: Pentium 4 cedar mill 3.2 ghz lga775 em64t
The mobo is 119$ ,memery will cost 89$ after rebates and the processor is 77$. with an extended warranty on processor and mobo all came to 450$ plus shipping.
Could have went with one of Apevia's 420w case but then I saw the 500w one for about 20$ more so why not get the bigger psu. It won't pull any more current than it needs to and I would have power to spare for up grades later.
The reason I went with a pentium processor is that every computer I've had in the past had intel inside and they all gave great service.
We started out with a Tandy and dos, when windows 95 came out, we got a Micron and when the Hdd ch\rashed on that one after about 4yrs, we ordered another Micron w\98 on it, the next one was this HP because micron had stoped making pcs and had went to sotfware only for business'. This HP lasted about 2 yrs before it started giving us heartburn, so …

I'm fairly new on this site and I see where a lot of you worry about power spikes and outages. Just about everyone has a sruge protector but it seems as if no one has a power back up system. I have two computers and both of them are on aN APC Backups pack. They allow me enough time to turn off the computer properly. For the cost of a mobo and precessor you can afford one better than the lost of data or your whole system. Also they can act as a filtering device if you go on generator power during a power outage.
And with all the LCD and plasma tv's today, they could save you a lot of money. www.APC.com has all the poop on them and they have a great warranty on them to boot.

This is anwser everyone who responed so far on this problem. Checked the cabling. autorun was turned on. Trouble shooting farther led me to this: Intel 82801DB LPC interface controller had no driver loaded. Went to Intel site and looked for the driver and found out that that controller has a fairly high failure rate, and they didn't have a driver for it.The 82801DB chip is or was used for the IDE?ATAPI and the USB controller. So it looks like "build" time for this computer replacement. Newegg here I come!:idea:

dewabo 16 Junior Poster

OK, this one is for the builders out there. Have just about had it with this HP pavilion desktop, thinking about building one like I want. Price range for mobe and processor around 200$. Like the Apevia micro ATX case, so lets start there. What mobo and processor would you guys and gails go with? I need one with good documention, for bios which I have little knowledge on so lets kiss ( keep it simple -----), would like to reuse my Hdd, CD\DVD burner, BTW my HDD is SATA, burners are ide. Could I use my present CPU cooler on a Pentium 4 Prescott or Celeron D processor? It seems to be working fine as I write this.Basicly I just want to replace this computer for home use, no power user here.

Sys. HP running XP\SP2
My computer program stops responding on certain programs, one being formatting a hard drive or when I put in a disc in the CD writer. Replaced the orginal cd writer with a cd\dvd writer and the darn thing would read a blank disc as being full or non-writiable. It wouldn't even show a formatt command in the window of actions.
Put the old cd back in the unit and it still ain't acting right. In trouble shooting system I found that the Intel(r) 82801DB LPC interface controller has no driver installed, went to Intel site and looked for this device with no results.
Hp has been as useless as tits on a bore hog in helping me with problem, what with trying to talk to someone in India who halfa-- understands southern english( g-d knows I can't understand them half the time). Can anyone here help me with this?

Great ideal except this is one of those machines that the E-Machines didn't include a repair or recovery disc. Is it possible that she could copy her recovery partition to a disc and use that to repair? Her husband is talking about just going and buying her another computer. Her son has repaired this machine several tmes and always puts a lot of "junk" on it that she doesn't want or needs, so she really doesn't want him to have a try at it again.

Midimagic, I didn't get recovery disc with my computer when I bought it 5 yrs ago, there was a recovery partition on the hdd. when my hdd crashed and burned, I call HP to order a set of recover disc, I was told that those disc were longer availible so they sent methe disc for the next model. when I try to load them, I get this message that those disc are not for my 752n model.I need the drivers off of those disc to realy get my machine back up and running correctly. I've loaded windows on it and it is working, but without a mixing device or audio drivers. Was hoping someone knew if the nLites program could get what I need off of those disc. Am I making any sense?

dewabo 16 Junior Poster

Has anyone here used nLites program? If so I've a few questions about it. Like, could it be usede to get rite of the computer id placed on oem recovery disc?

I updated my bios today and my video started working, 32bit color and 3d graphics and the whole nine yards, bios still doesn't see the SATA HDD. Now to get my mixing device and sound card to work. Get that done and I'm back in business. Think it's the drivers. All that stuff is on the recovery disc HP sent, but those disc won't work with my machine. Chipset ID sucks big time.

dewabo 16 Junior Poster

Thanks Midimagic, I've a feeling that the third reason you gave is the problem. The Hdd did come out of another computer, I may try to slave it and use as a back up storage device. Hate to thrash a good 20gb hdd. :@

Got a WD500GB 7200rpm 16mbcache HDD from NEWEGG,com, being as I knew nothing about my computer at the time of my first post, got me a SATA HDD. Opened up the computer and oops wrong HDD. At the time I didn't know the dirrerence between IDE and SATA, went back on line and found out that the most GBs I could get in IDE was 380. Made chose to buy the adapter card(Rosewell, 19.99+ shipping) and installed that. System is back up and running, even though the BIOS doesn't see the new HDD. System scan on startup sees it but the bios says I don't have one, go figure!:-O

dewabo 16 Junior Poster

Well everything in good, and the HDD works as promised, the system sees the HDD on startup equipment scan, but the BIOS has yet to see it. Other then some software problems it seems to be working. :)

Here is the problem, Hdd crashed and burned, replaced hdd, got in touch with HP for recovery disc, the ones they sent are not compatible with my machine. Was told those disc are no longer avaible(sic) so they refunded my money back, so all I have are a set of croasters.
Does anyone out there know how I can open the files on these disc and get the ones I need? Windows XP w\sp2 (retail) only loaded the bare minimun for the video and no sound card drivers. So I'm looking at 4bit color and have nota bit of sound. Error message says no mixer unit loaded. These files are on the usless disc HP sent but I can't seem to get them loaded.
BTY, the HDD I installed was a sata HDD, also insalled an adapter card for it. Computer sees the Hdd, but it doesn't show up in the BIOS, That couldn't be part of the problem could it?Now I have 500gb of storage space and nothing to put on it until I get Audio and Video figured out. Thanks for listening to my raint, hope yall can help.

Lets see, to get you started in repairing that motherboard of yours, you will need an "o" scope. power supply, and a detailed schematic of that motherboard. with out these items, it is best to follow the advice of those that said to trash that one and buy another mobo. The cost of a GOOD 'O'scope will be a lot more than the mobo.IMO
