Yup... and that thread got closed. :)

$2,666??? GOOD LORD!
Why not build a dual processor x86 box, where things will be WAY cheaper, and you can do same as everything with one of those as you could do with that G5 box?
Okay, beggers can't be choosers, but let's examine your config, and see where changes could be made to save money:
• Dual 1.8GHz PowerPC G5
Again, why G5's? Athlon XP's, or Athlon64's would be WAY cheaper. Heck, depending on the traffic you're getting, you might be able to do for a P3 or something.
• 512MB DDR400 SDRAM (PC3200) - 2x256
• 2x250GB Serial ATA - 7200rpm
• NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Ultra w/64MB DDR SDRAM
Do you really need this beefy of a video card? If this thing's a server, go get a used PCI 8MB or 16MB video card, because you will not need that much video memory or power if you're not doing any graphics processing.
• 56k V.92 internal modem
Are you going to be serving over dialup? If not, you don't need this. You could choose to omit it if building your own x86 box.
• 8x SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW)
I'll give you this, since you've got 500GB of space on this box.
• PCI-X Gigabit Ethernet Card
Do you have a Gigabit LAN? If you're running this over broadband, a 10Mbit card would do. Besides, you can pick up a 10/100Mbit card for …
Rar is nice, but my favorite is bzip2. I use it in UNIX/Linux, and it's great when combined with tar archives. It's kind of like gzip-- it only works with one file at a time, which is why you'd put all the files you'd want in a tar archive, and then use bzip on it.
hehe, i dont hack, if anything, i hack up some games to try to make mods for them. friends send me what they made and i see if it could help me. lmao, im a h4xx0r....
OK... now that's "hacking"-- trying to make mods for games, etc. That's really what hacking is actually all about, not "I'm kewls mang, so I'll sploit a box, dood!" ;)
Okay, you're not a l4m3r. My apologies! :D
i used to use DOS... but that was years ago. now i mainly use homemade programs that friends get me, rarely anything else.
So, you're what they "in the business" would call a l4m3r?
That's cheap. Why would you want to do some lame garbage like that? Wait right there... I'll call the FBI for you.
In the future, please choose a more descriptive title for your threads. "urgent..i need help.." tells us nothing of what your problem is.
Further, claiming your thread is "urgent" is rude. It implies you deserve more attention than other members who have posted before you, which is wrong-- we try to prioritize issues here based on how old the issue is, not by how "urgent" the member thinks their issue is.
Welcome to Daniweb, and I hope this advice helps you here.
What does YOUR program output?
Also, you can use the code symbols to make the code more readable; they are:
[ <the word 'CODE'> ]
insert your code here
[ <a slash '/'> <the word 'CODE'> ]Otherwise its pretty hard to follow all those nested for loops!
yeah, code tags look like this:
your code goes here
Note: looking at the editing of the posts, there's not any actual indentation in there that I can see...
To build upon JC7's post, let us know what kind of video card you have, and we might be able to suggest how to change this screen rotation.
Closing this thread.
We don't support people posting links to help others cheat on their homework, just like we don't do people's homework for them here, either.
Yes, I have.
What happened when you tried this? Did it have better results?
My only thought is, if you can get on fine in Linux, then it's probably something internal to your Windows installation. Your modem(s) are probably fine, especially if the same issue persisted through a dial-up modem to a cable modem.
What does show on your screen? It's quite possible you simply need to reinstall Windows on your system.
What exactly can't you delete? The wget program, or the program you downloaded?
Just a helpful hint here on the forum for you:
Cn u plz not use chat spk here? Wat do u want 2 do that for? U got all d time in d world 2 make a post, so there's no need 2 uz chat spk n here.
Please, for all of our eyes' sakes, spend about 30 seconds more on your post, and spell words in a non-lame fashion.
kthxbye! :D
don't start a new thread when dealing with your old problem...
http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread13701.html
and use code tags and hopefully indentation to make your code somewhat readable.
Have you tested what the value of your "enter_operator" actually is after the input?
Should it even go into one of your if-statements?
Went ahead and merged these two threads together. Let's make sure that we keep topics all inclusive in one thread.
Just the ot her day I was looking for free downloadable games to play and needless to say I found several and installed them only to find they had spyware/addware included in the exe. The first game is called industryplayer and the other is Wik and the Fable of Souls.
Also if you look for websites for cheat codes for some of the more popular games using http://www.cheatgenius.co.uk/cheatsingame/XBOX_16395_Halo_2_cheats.html as your base address.
Thanks for the heads up-- I'll give that a try. Do you need the actual games installed in order to install the cheats?
Try the card in another system.
Install new drivers.
Reinstall windows.
Try any of those steps, and see what happens. If the card does that in another system, I'd RMA that sucker.
I would figure so long as it's consistent in your program, and you're not using a "reserved word" for your language, you'll be in good shape.
Great having you aboard, urthlight!
I see Dani loves old retro shows, lets help her out and name some. Imma start off, here are mines:
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (Take it, its on Nick-at-Nite)
Hate to double post, but come on-- The Fresh Prince??? I remember when that show came out back in the 90's. Heck, they show Rosanne on there-- that's nowhere near retro, in my eyes...
Hello,
What may be amazing is that Dani just celebrated her 22nd Birthday, placing her birthday at Nov 11, 82.
The last person to walk on the moon did so in 1973. Who would think that walking on the moon and exploring another world in the flesh would be a retro thing. So much for hyped technology... here we are with all this tech, and yet have not colonized the moon.
Christian
Hey! I'm older than Dani!!! But only by a couple months-- Sept 9, here.
But, My favorite old shows are Mr. Ed, and Gilligan's Island :D
My second PC is running at 400Mhz, 128MB ram. It is an OptiPlex GX1 from Dell. Just wondering what you would suggest is the best way to speed it up. It does accept up to 768MB ram but the processor is slow. Is overclocking going to give me noticeable results? Thanks!
You might want to repost this in a new thread. This discussion is regarding 400mhz memory, not 400mhz processors.
But in a nutshell, about the only thing you'll want to do to speed up your system is install more memory, and consider using a different, faster hard drive, like a SATA or SCSI drive. Even if you just upgraded your system's hard drives and CD drives, you'd experience a slight increase in performance. A processor upgrade on that system is inadvisable, and you're not going to get any real speed gains from overclocking, if you even could overclock that system.
If there are answers to people's questions, they'll be posted beneath the thread, like this reply I'm posting.
If your PC is an Athlon XP, then it could make quite a noticeable difference. If it's a Pentium 4 or Athlon64, then it may not make as much, because memory management is a little better for those, i believe (haven't checked it in practice).
Best approach is to run sime benchmarking tools, change the settings for RAM speed, and then run them again to see how much difference it makes. The last time I tested my self was with an XP3000+ system, GF4 Ti4200 display card, and using 3DMark2001, which is the best of the 3DMark test to assess overall system performance rather than just the display card.
Running RAM at 333MHz rather than 400MHz consistently made a difference of about 300 to 400 3DMarks to the test results, which isn't a helluva lot, but is certainly enough to show that the system wasn't working at full efficiency.
Well there you go.
I'm running a Barton Athlon XP, which I'm not planning on overclocking at all. I'll try clocking my memory down, and see what I come up with. I'm running Sandra to benchmark with, is 3dmark better, you think?
Hey there dlh. Thanks for your input. I appreciate it. I will definitely consider adding a donate X form to the subscription page. However, I think you misunderstood me. As I said, I need about one dollar per signup. However, I don't plan on asking my members for this money. Instead, I plan on perhaps partnering with some company in that I would put their advertisement on the registration page or work some sort of partnership out where I end up making about one dollar per signup through advertising. Definitely not going to be charging the members.
I like this idea, if someone can do it.
Is it not possible to squeeze in another ad aggregation service on the forum in somewhere? I could stand another ad, if it meant keeping the site open. I just thought that ads that we know are spyware related were not in line with our goals here of fixing people's computers, that's all.
Happy Birthday, Dani! :D
Agreed. Closing post.
just go to your command prompt and type "cd.." and then again "cd.."( without inverted comas) until you get your c drive alone.
Or, even more simply... if you're at c:\Documents and settings\User\My Documents, or some really long path, you can simply type
cd \
and that will take you to the root of C:
Couldn't you just use the diff program under Linux/UNIX that already exists? It does that, and it does it well.
I mean, that'd be a very efficient way to go about it, unless you absolutely needed to write your own implementation.
Higher rated RAM almost always 'works' with motherboards which are specified to 'work' with lower rated modules. It will simply be operated at the lower speed, which is what you want anyway! You should never really run your RAM at higher speeds than that required to 'synchronise' with the front side bus speed of your processor. Doing so can cause performance drops.
Having RAM modules which can operate at higher clockspeeds, however, allows you to overclock by increasing the processor's front side bus peed, and still have your RAM operating 'in sync' with it, and thus at its full efficiency :)
Didn't want to hijack the other thread with this question, so starting a new one here.
Interesting topic that you've brought up here. I don't want to hijack this thread, but just need clarification. If I've got a chip with a 333 FSB, and I'm running 400mhz RAM, what type of performance would I get by lowering the speed of my RAM down to 333? Would it even make any difference?
What part are you stuck on? Do you need help designing it?
Most people here won't write your code for you, but can help you get started with some suggestions. Let us know what you're stuck on, and we'll try to give you a nudge in the right direction...
Now closing this thread. Please keep the discussion going in the same thread as before. If you need me to merge these two threads, please let me know.
you could write a batch script to do it, if you wanted to. Just open a file, write in the path to each file, like this :
start c:\program files\Microsoft Office\word.exe
Then, you could put all of them in one file, name the file with a .bat extension, and then that should do it. When you double click on the icon, it should open up all of those programs.
You'll have to check into the start command, though. I think that you need that in order for it to open one program after another, or move on after that program has been opened.
edit: just checked it-- start should work!
This is in the wrong forum... What OS is this? Please let us know, and one of the mods will move this to the appropriate forum.
I have to write a program that reads in from a data file. Then, it is supposed to pick out the words of a certain length. Once it finds these words, it places the words in two lists. One lists contains the words and the number of occurrences sorted alphabetically, and the other list contains the same info just sorted my most occurrences. I am to use a node class which I can write anyway that I want. However, I am confused about how to write it. Can someone help me?
Somebody here can help you, I'm sure. In the meantime, what part are you confused about? Generally, if you try to "get cracking" on at least part of the project, somebody around here might be able to stir your thinking, or give you some pointers.
Even if you don't know how to code what you're asking about, try and explain the process/algorithm you're thinking about implementing. That way, even if we don't help you with a single line of code, we might be able to help with your design of the program.
Dell tech support told you wrong!
You can run that PC with only one module installed, and it simply needs to be in memory slot 1. You'll most likely find that the slot numbers are printed on the board beside the slots ;)
Edit:
oops, sorry. If that Dimension uses RAMBUS memory it'll need to be used in pairs. I'll check that one out tomorrow. It's late and I'm tired :)
The 8200 does use RAMBUS memory, just an FYI. But, you won't "fry" the system, it just won't POST until you put that memory in. It might not boot, but it will at least give a memory beep.
Hee hee hee - I'm surprised she didn't offer to share a large lottery winning with us if only she could get $8,000 to go over to Nigeria and collect it!
Seriously, she may be legit, but my parents weren't rich either and what did I do? I went to my local state college for a heck of a lot less than $8000!
It does not cost money to be good at acting. It takes talent. If she has that, the money isn't that important; if she doesn't, the money won't make a difference.
I wish 'her' the best of luck with 'her' fundraising. I apologise if the Web has made me so cynical about fund-raising schemes that I can't reach out to someone in need, but, well, it has.
I completely agree. I worked a 40 hour week straight through college, pulled at least 16 hours a semester in classes, and still kept a minimum 3.0 GPA. All done without having to beg for money. Begging's lame, and in any form, it should be considered degrading. If she wants more money, wait more tables, plain and simple.
I also agree with Chainsaw's assertion that "she" may very well not even be a "she". It's certain that, being the picture was of a moderately attractive girl, many people would jump to give her money. If I was going to beg for money, that's probably the route I'd take.
Closing topic. We don't want to get the forum gunked …
Alex is correct, but I just want to comment on this. I do have the ability to filter out certain advertisements that are inappropriate, etc. And I did so to the WeatherBug ads, granted I was told that the software is spyware.
However, please keep in mind that when I filter out ads, they are not replaced with other ads. Instead, they become unsold advertising revenue. For example, turning down the WeatherBug campaign has cost DaniWeb $XX per day, but that is something I have no problem doing on an ethical ground.
I just want you guys to keep this in mind when suggesting that I remove advertisement campaigns. For example, it is simply not practical for me to turn down advertisers who would like to advertise products I simply don't like, don't feel are of good quality, or are based on anything that is at all objective. It's simply not a practical solution for a business which receives all of its revenue from advertising.
However, if you guys stumble upon any advertisements that are illegal, spyware, etc., then I have no problem turning away the advertiser. Please just keep in mind that I don't personally endorse any advertisements on the site.
I feel that this No-Adware link should get pulled on the same basis as the Weatherbug one. Nobody wants this site to go under, or for you to not have enough funding, but I think there is a big integrity issue here. If we can't endorse a tool/site …
Can you do us a favor?
In the future, when posting any code, especially such large snippets, please put it in vB code tags, for the sake of readibility.
Thanks!
Seriously, it's called double posting, and it's not encouraged in this forum at all.
Closing this thread; please continue conversation in the thread already created.
>but i dont want to use exec ls command
Why not? It does the job and is much easier to get right than the equivalent code using opendir, readdir, closedir, and stat.
Maybe it's an exercise in using those functions? Just a guess here.
what happens if you type in
ls -a /etc/
at that prompt? If there's no master.passwd in there, you've got a little bit of an issue, and you might need to reinstall OS X.
Why not just take the source code for the Linux ls command, and hack it to your liking, so that it automatically includes those options? Then, you could compile it, rename it, and use it as you wish.
I haven't looked at the source, but I imagine each of those options is a function, and you could just have it call those functions in addition to its default behaviour. Why reinvent the wheel?
We don't write your code for you-- we're here to help you learn.
Please at least attempt to write something, and meanwhile, we might be able to give you some pointers. Also, posting your email address for us to send you the output is also counterproductive to the goal of this forum; we want to make our knowledge available to all, not just you.
Funny thing is, nowadays I often find myself fielding questions from some of those 'lettered' folk :D
Don't you love that?
When I worked in Medical Records at a hospital, this guy in IT was always like, "OH YEAH... I'm an MCSE.... let me look at that!" when a computer was down.
We had a Windows 98 machine that wasn't getting on the LAN, and he was fuming at how he couldn't figure it out. Now, mind you, I have a degree in Networking, and just couldn't find an IT gig (should have had his job, really), but I walked over and said, "What does winipcfg say your IP address is?" Thinking that would be something you'd immediately do after confirming your physical connections were good.
The resulting blank stare gave me pause. From then on, when he was around, and a system was down, I always thought, "OH YEAH... he's an MCSE.... let me look at that!" :D
Probably start by opening a book, and getting the formula for a pythagorean triple, I'd guess.
Try to find that, write something based off of it, and we'll help you work it out. We're not going to write the program for you.
Actually, lets see, where is some places online that I can get Microsoft Certifications online, for teens?
There really aren't any such places, especially not specifically "for teens", as you put it. Basically, what you'll want to do is just get up the $170 US (Or whatever it costs now), and go to a testing location. Just be sure that you're sure that you can pass it, because if not, you just blew $170.
Now marking thread as Solved. If this actually did not solve the issue, contact a moderator via PM, and we'll un-mark it for you.
Have you tried to get rid of that stuff through Safe Mode?
Try hitting <F8> when your computer boots, and go into Safe Mode, then try getting rid of that stuff. Also, try checking out the Bridge.dll thread that's listed in my sig for more information.
You're not ever going to want to burn more than one disc at the same time.
Reason being, the IDE channel is really taxed throwing all of that data back and forth. Without an IDE controller card, your setup would be like this:
If you do that, you're going to end up with a lot of badly burnt discs. If you can even find a program that will allow you to use multiple burners, the IDE channels are going to be so clogged up, it will be a slow, and error-prone process to burn multiple DVDs at once.
As it is, you should pretty much stick to getting drives that are faster, and have higher storage capacity. That's the safest way to ensure that you're not wasting your time and your discs.
You might very well have a hardware issue here. I'd do like Catweazle said: Put the processor in another motherboard, and boot it up.
I just had it happen last week a customer had a motherboard go bad, which ended up killing the processor, too. In the end, I had to buy a new motherboard, and processor. But, the motherboard was actually the catalyst that set it all into motion.
