Okay! Count me in! I just started, and with an XP2500+ processor, I have no idea when I'll upload a work unit!

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

kind of a big, overpowering sig, isn't it?

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

hey, and I want a new digital camera, and a new car, and a new house, and I have no money either...

Yeah! Sounds good! Let me set up a donations link!

I'll give you $1 if you give me one.

Why not just pick up some extra work? Take out somebody's trash, haul something off. I mean, a webhost can cost as little as $10 US a month. I know I spend more than that in a week on coffee.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

DON'T FIX IT-- RETURN IT

Unless the seller says it was sold as-is, you shouldn't have to fool with doing that. Bent pins can be grounds for replacing a processor, as sometimes the traces inside of the chip can actually be broken, and you'd never know it. If they're only slightly crooked, like Thong_Ispector mentioned, then you might be okay adjusting them.

Went ahead and merged these two threads together. Since you're asking a lot of memory-related questions, please keep them all in one thread.

Thanks!

I pretty much rely exclusively on Newegg. The only time I go elsewhere is if I'm looking for used/refurb items, or NewEgg doesn't have some obscure part that I need.

Just to throw my $.02 in, I've got a Barton XP2500, and I REALLY like it. I know there are faster processors out there, but it's been rock-solid stable. I've OCed mine up as high as a 2800, and I've had some good results with it, though now I'm just running it stock.

how do i figure out who made this mobo/what it is? it is a socket 423 with a covered north bridge and a VIA VT8233 southbridge. there are no markings , brands etc.?? any ideas?? thank you prynas

Any other numbers anywhere? There should be some type of identifier/manufacturer markings screened on the board somewhere.

XP Home will NOT speed things up. It's the same OS as XP Home, but with some extra features added.

This statement brought to you by the Department of Redundancy Department. ;)

Mean to say XP Pro won't be any faster than Home, perhaps?

thanx suroot,

Are bios programmers readily available or is it a very specialised area ??

Generally a specialised area, ie, the motherboard manufacturer writes the BIOS for the motherboard. But, the BIOS calls should all be available, so you can write kernel-level modules/functions that interact with the BIOS.

You've probably got some other funkyness happening. Try disabling BHOS:

In IE, click Tools, then Internet Options. Click the Advanced tab. Uncheck "Enable third party browser extensions", Click OK, and then restart Internet Explorer. See if it still does that.

I tried using sendmail and it gave me error --

How can I solve this?

Thanks!

Install sendmail? try using mail instead of sendmail, too.

What do you mean by "Non-USB"? Serial? PS2?

I'd imagine that with either PS2 or USB would work the same, as the OS handles the text input all the same. If it's some other input, it might be different-- you might need to know if PHP has an interface to a certain device driver.

a tee filter what in the world is that............

It's a common UNIX utility. Basically, you pipe the output of one command to tee, and it acts like a "tee" pipe in plumbing, allowing you to output to to different places, like STDOUT and a file, at the same time.

quote right Alex, but that cracker mentality is exactly what a lot of the hardcare linux people have.
They're religious zealots, and I use that term deliberately.
To them terrorism against their enemies is seen as just and right, everything is allowed (even to be praised) in the fight against Big Corporations.
If you've ever looked at /. discussions you'll see that clearly, everyone who is opposed to that attitude is believed to work for Microsoft (which they of course don't spell out in fear their keyboards will explode) or the CIA.

Personally, I can't lie and say that I wasn't like that at some point. Now, I love Linux/BSD, but now I'm more "mature"-- in fact, I probably use Microsoft products more than F/OSS now. (But, I get them for free because of my job, so that might be a motivation, too...)

But, this type of stuff is extremism to an extent, or supreme lameness, or both, take your pick. There's polarity on each side, I guess, but since the perception is that the Open Source community isn't some giant, money-funded juggernaut, but a bunch of grungy hippy anarchists, people don't put it past "the community proper" to do things like this.

That's why I'm not too keen on the fact that Lunix is getting more and more popular. We're undergoing growing pains right now where we've got a bunch of 14m3r5 who would like nothing better than to bring down some "big communist …

Didn't find anything on Google about it, but apparently ghungaroo is a string of bells Hindi dancers wear around their ankles.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

This is kind of funny, and all, but what kind of light does this portray "The Linux Community" in?

I mean, first we're shown as a bunch of geeky hobbyists, but now we're going to be shown as some c00l d00dzers who are fighting against a big meanie corporation. I'd prefer if we just stayed civil, and stood our ground, rather than having losers doing stuff like this, funny or not.

I think I read this on Slashdot, and I thought it was incredibly interesting. Does anyone find it crazy that now IBM makes Mac Processors, but Macs aren't called "IBM compatible"?

Personally, I think that IBM did well to get rid of that line. They didn't seem to be making a whole heap of money on it (compared to their other divisions), and now they can focus more on stuff like big-iron servers, and high-end workstations, etc.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

What's the script? (be sure to edit out the email addresses)

I usually just use sendmail directly, like this:

sendmail email@domain.com < ~/maildir/mailmessage

and that works out just fine, never had a problem. You could even use a variable if you wanted:

sendmail $email_addy < ~/maildir/mailmessage

That's always worked for me, assuming that your MTA is sendmail, or it is at least available.

You could try something like this (I have all Windows versions except ME, but it should work):

1. If you can start your Windows:

-On your Windows ME-CD, locate the folder with all the .cab - files (in Windows 98, this folder is called Win98)

-open a MS-DOS command and change to the specific folder on your CD. Then type: extract /A /L C:\Windows firstcab.cab rundll32.exe. 'firstcab.cab' should be changed to the name of the first .cab file in the folder while C:\Windows is the path where the file will be extracted.

2. If you can't start Windows:

-As far as I know, you can't start to DOS mode in Windows ME just like that, but you can try anyway: start from your Windows ME-CD; when you're in DOS-Mode with cd-rom support, search the CD for the cab files folder.
-Proceed as above.

Hope this will help you.

Michael

If you know what CAB file it's on, this method will work. Just wanted to chime in on this, because the Windows ME installation CD does have EXTRACT on it.

That sounds to me like there's some kind of grounding issue....

I just ran Cli Benchmark III SMP 0.7.16...

I ran it on two different PC's , both P4 2.4 with 512 meg and maxtor drives, both running 98se.

The only real difference is one is setup with raid (Mine) the other is not..(Wife)
Ha, Ha...

It found that average read speed DOUBLED on the Raid

It found the average write speed improved by over 50%

These findings are fairly consistent with the "Feel" of the system...
Side by side you would swear that the raid was running a much faster processor.

This is only a 150k download for anyone running an ATA setup on a similar processor. I would like to know if there is an SATA in my future.

But see, you're still talking theoretically when running a benchmark. If that system was a dedicated video editing solution, then yes, RAID would be an excellent choice. But, on a desktop system, unless you're just interested in the extra drive space, I don't think you're going to notice a real impact on system speed. I've got two 7200RPM ATA133 drives in RAID, and I've not noticed that much of a difference.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Did you check the reviews? they'd be the best things to consider befure purchasing the drive.

Now, I do just want to elaborate on something here. SATA150 is only 17MB/s faster than ATA/133. While it is a speed increase, I don't think you're going to experience some huge speed jump by installing a "faster" drive. At least, not some appreciable difference.

jifiii and Coconut Monkey are right-- pick a drive based on how much space you need. you're not going to get too much faster by having SATA drives.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

on question number one, you could just pipe the output of the command to the lpd daemon, or whatever program you use:

perl AAA.pl | lpd

on question two, you could use the system() function, I do believe. I'm not a Perl programmer (I only play one on TV!), but you might be able to do something like this using backticks ` `:

user=`whoami`;
now=`date +%Y.%m.%d.%R`;
File="/tmp/satimis/comparison_"+$user+"_"+$now+".txt";

From Perl Documentation:

qx/STRING/
`STRING`

A string which is (possibly) interpolated and then executed as a system command with /bin/sh or its equivalent. Shell wildcards, pipes, and redirections will be honored. The collected standard output of the command is returned; standard error is unaffected. In scalar context, it comes back as a single (potentially multi-line) string. In list context, returns a list of lines (however you've defined lines with $/ or $INPUT_RECORD_SEPARATOR).

Because backticks do not affect standard error, use shell file descriptor syntax (assuming the shell supports this) if you care to address this. To capture a command's STDERR and STDOUT together:

$output = `cmd 2>&1`;

To capture a command's STDOUT but discard its STDERR:

$output = `cmd 2>/dev/null`;

To capture a command's STDERR but discard its STDOUT (ordering is important here):

$output = `cmd 2>&1 1>/dev/null`;

To exchange a command's STDOUT and STDERR in order to capture the STDERR but leave its STDOUT to come out the old STDERR:

$output = `cmd 3>&1 1>&2 2>&3 3>&-`;

To read both a command's STDOUT and its …

What exactly are you printing?

If you're generating HTML, you can have Perl generate HTML tags. But, if you're just outputting to the console, there may be methods of using ASCII escape codes to display the desired text effects, similar to how you can do when working with the bash shell.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

What do you mean exactly-- the source code?

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Are you sure you'll be able to use Ctrl-C with the shell? I'd be afraid that the script will just stop being interpreted by the shell, and just dump to a prompt. Perhaps you should be looking at some scripting language (Python or Perl, for instance) where you can simply raise an exception whenever Ctrl-C is pressed?

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Can you post the code of the form? Did you need support for other languages?

Where the ###'s are the IP address of the remote Linux server?
