Our old VB6 SQL apps began failing a few years ago. We hadn't worked on those for over a decade along with decommissioning the developer kits. Turns out the company using these had moved to Windows 10 which didn't exist back when the apps were developed or put into service.

We are still in negotiations about replacement apps along with estimates on the new apps.

Since you can't buy VB6 today, how do you write new apps in this?

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Remember that I will not try this in said Pascal for many reasons. I have written a few apps using the FREE Android Development Kit from Google so let's say I wanted to start with ping. Google "android ping example source code" without quotes and you'll find code examples you can build on. Or try that on ChatGPT.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

After reading that "File access is removed in latest Android version." I see a broken stripped down system that I would abandon immediately.

As to your requirements, that's quite a list and outside of PING required intimate knowledge of your router API. There is no known common API for routers to obtain a list of connections.

Finally, routers don't maintain a list of users by name (typical routers) so how you intend to determine that user name is a mystery to me.

Good luck in your quest.

Nico_3 commented: Thank you for the response. Basically for now is only to Ping All IP's accross all routers. Database of users I will associate. +0

I noted the issues with your post and the problems with what is a dead system. While I do have one last VB6 dev laptop in storage I only pull it out for paid work. And at 250USD a hour the only company that pays is very careful about their requests.

You ignored how such problems are presented. ZIP file? Too dangerous today. You could have posted the code snippet along with what lines you think the problem is at.

Finally there's the issue of how you wrote up the problem description and more so the lack of a document detailing the expected software operation. AKA the spec.

Sure, go ahead and claim I didn't supply the solution when you didn't supply the problem properly.

  1. With so few having VB6 now, you need to move to a current release. Help will be hard to find.
  2. I can't load up your project. Few others can so by not posting the relevant code in the clear with your assessment, you see the issue?
  3. VB6, while I coded very large projects long ago, "It's Dead Jim." That is, you're on a deserted island.
  4. VB6 let us set breakpoints, examine variables and more. I continue to find old and new developers that don't know how to use the system.

As such your last question doesn't make sense. The SDK installs your software development tools and your code would be where the API is called but not a call to the SDK!

Regarding "doesn't open the file". I've used so many tools over the years to profile and log what apps access that I can write that Windows does open the file for a peek.

And then we have the problem that many files don't have duration. https://www.loc.gov/preservation/digital/formats/fdd/fdd000105.shtml is for MP3 and it's not in the base spec.

But how do they do it? Spoiler: Everyone cheats. Example: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/20771845/how-to-get-the-size-and-duration-of-an-mp3-file Note this was 2019 and even then, duration isn't in the MP3 file.

This is quite the rabbit hole to go down so I suggest you use MediaInfo or try one of the three functions of https://github.com/stax76/Get-MediaInfo

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

When you asked for runtime you triggered a memory from long ago where MP3 runtimes were at times wildly inaccurate. Just like the man who was turned into a newt in Monty Python who said "I got better", such are better now but I still read complaints it's not exact.

So here's the thing, you may want that runtime but it's not always available and sometimes incorrect. Look at MEDIAINFO at https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo/Support/Formats see what it reports on MKV runtime.

I don't want to give away the answer or spoil it for your research. Do you know why the answer was no for MKV?

"I allocated a C partition and formatted as NTFS then boot back into my Windows 11 install USB."

That can derail the usual Windows install. On today's PCs I start off with a blank, no partition drive, boot the Windows USB stick and once in a while need to add the Intel RST storage driver.

I maintain that Microsoft should update their installer to include this and to present reasons why it can't install to a drive with a single NTFS partition. Look at working systems and you find a lot of partitions other than the C drive.

Python is an interpreted language, which means the source code of a Python program is converted into bytecode that is then executed by the Python virtual machine.

As such the .exe would be the Python virtual machine and not your Python apps.

https://www.asus.com/support/faq/1044458/ notes the Intel RST as well. As to BB/GS, I've found them hit or miss on this area.
And on some models you "Disable Intel Volume Management Device (VMD) technology".

I'm of the opinion that such steps should be automatic and built into "modern" Windows.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

I've had a lot of their laptops at my brother's insurance office. We've been lucky with them.
OK, there is a "thing" about some models where you have to install a media/storage driver for some drives to show up. So far Linux shows such drives since that driver is baked into all the current distros I've used recently.
I can't offer much more without the full model number. For Intel based laptops I usually try the Intel RST. Example https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/720755/intel-rapid-storage-technology-driver-installation-software-with-intel-optane-memory-11th-up-to-13th-gen-platforms.html but this may not be the one for the laptop under discussion.

I use ChatGPT for quick and dirty work where I need a function to build some apps. My close friend took ChatGPT back to work in December 2022 and they use it for many things. Examples such a SQL queries and regular expressions. He tells me they saved mid 5 figures USD in the first year over outsourcing.

It's time and money. Some get a little red around the collar that we use modern tools like this.

That said, I just moved up to Visual Studio 2022 and AI tools/assistants are baked in now. I wonder if a purist would try to turn all that off.

Besides that concern that you are attempting to write a cheat system, here we don't write the code for you. If you have an issue with your app, then supplying a minimum viable example with what you think is the issue is what is acceptable.

However, assisting others with crafting cheat software doesn't happen here.

What standards are you asking about?

What happens when your standard doesn't fit your use case? (spoiler)
image_2024-01-27_115711909.png
https://xkcd.com/927/

As I wrote more and more code I did gravitate toward standards. But with each job, there was yet another standard to use.
Most of the time it was just a formatting change. Read https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indentation_style to see 9 standards alone.

Then there was the call to use patterns but the embedded system was a mix of assembler and C. Not even C++.
To make that more fun, the program lead wanted to replace the hardware system with "something modern" so we could move to C++. A few weeks later they were reassigned.

So back to you, how do you deal with choosing such standards?
