have you played around with your hardware yet ie RAM,external cards etc.It might be that some hardware had failed during your usual operation and Im sure you know if a defective card is attached to motherboard this behaviour is acceptable. Lets try to rule out all other posibilities before you install a new mobo

Yes youre right you have a hd thats not being detectd by youre machine.if you comfortable with working inside youre machine open the case uplug youre two IDE cables ie hard drive and cd IDE's and reconnect them.Go into BIOS and see if you can then detect it

you could start a new treat but this fix is a quicky but just be carefull and very accurate.
right click my computer>properties>advace tab>startup and recovery settings

note-the line that states windows 2000 professional in your case

im just curious did the cpu go in the mobo that you currently have or did you somewhat force it in

in the BIOS run a Hard drive detection: press enter when the highlight is on primary master if save BIOS settings.what is the error that you get??when you tap f8 continuesly after exiting BIOS to get the safe mode option what happens?can you go into safe mode?

first try the cpu on anoter socket to see if thats good so we can go on

use all onboard hw like onboard video,sound,network etc(only those that it has) start it up that way if all is good start replacing your external cards one at a time

Nevertheless If you switch on your system and theres absolutely no sounds,lights,power supply fan spinning than you know theres no power at all.in that case check your power supply cord inside the case and externally

whilest in the BIOS check to see if the hard drive is detected by your system if it is than look in the BOOT order and set it to the BOOT up device first.if that fails than do a hard drive format in another machine(slave your drive) put it back in the original machine and install the new OS

This will help but do jump your BIOS as well on your motherboard asswell.

I hope when you opened it up you made sure you were wearing a static band cos it could be that the static might have played its part. Just speculating though, not implying anything here.

Great minds think alike.I was immediately thinking the same thing when reading the post. If it is static you than EMC's post will help you determine witch part is busted[for real busted]. check the simple things first video plugs firmly in including cables[from monitor to tower]. cards, RAM etc.It might be very easy to fix or a worst case.

aunistly dont know what you axactly trying to say but if your cpy is properly seated and you lower the lever with slight force at the end all is good.

Id say install sp3 (go with the link as provided) as you install the OS. seeing that, that specific prob lies with sp2.its not likely to happen again but it could and youd be stuck with a de javu. in a nutshell install your OS with sp3

You could go into safe mode and run a alternative anti virus program ie Trend and run the DOS appliation together with the two pattern files ie lpt and sspda (latest versions,same site).
