No, I haven't replaced the power supply. Why do you think it's the power supply, not that I doubt you...I just want to understand?

I've recently had a random problem with my computer hanging in the POST, I eventually found a LED display on the motherboard and was able to match that configuration to the diagnostic LED function chart and found that it was hanging at " intializing the floppy drive controller". I disconnected the data cord for the drive at the motherboard and this seemed to have solved the problem, now several days later it has started to hang at random times again, but this time the LED display is showing random displays. Can someone please help me figure out what is happening here? As I understand it the POST involves the RAM, disk drive, peripheral devices, and hardware, where do I start to untangle this one?
I'm just about to rebuild my PC and have been told that my 300W Antec might not be powerful enough for my new build. I've had no problems with my Antec, but a friend tells me that they're not as good anymore. I would greatly appreciate some information on current model PSUs, I'm looking for a 450W PSU. Another issue I'm not sure about is a video card, I will not be playing games, but will do some video editing, so I could use some advise here also. Thanks in advance.
My rebuild will consist of the following:
Asus K8V SE Deluxe socket 754 motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ proccessor
Undetermind PCU cooling fan
Corsair PC3200 2X512MB
Maxtor 40GB hdd (from old PC, will add a new one later)
NEC 3520A DVD/CD burner
Existing case
Existing modem
Have I missed anything?
I disconnected the data cord at the computer and haven't had a problem since, so I guess it's either the cord or the floppy drive, I'll replace the cord first.
Hey guys...thank you for your help. All of this is related to my computer hanging up in POST, an LED display on the mobo when it hangs up matches the MSI Diagnostic LED Function - initializing floppy drive controller. And this is why I'm trying to use the Microsoft troubleshooter. Can you guys suggest something more specific for solving this problem?
I'm using 2000 Pro and I'm trying to troubleshoot the floppy drive controller, and the drives troubleshooter is asking if I'm using a SCSI device, what the heck is it? :o
I just found the MSI diagnostic LED function list, and the POST hangs at "initializing floppy drive controller".
The RAM is the same that I have been using since I got the computer, I don't think that's the problem. The 12Volt rail is reading every bit of 12Volts.
I have a MSI K7 Pro motherboard with a PC mounted LED display. This is a vertical display consisting of four LEDs inline, locateded just below Serial and Parallel ports. When the computer hangsup during startup the top two and bottom LEDs are green, and the second from the bottom is red.( from the top down to mobo - green, green, red, green)
I know that the sequence of the LEDs during the startup are indicators of its point in the startup, but I can't find a reference to the LEDs in the owners manual, does anyone know what that configuration means?
Thanks Nanosani...we did the MSConfig, and it did the trick.
Please allow me to correct myself, the LEDs on the exterior are supposed to stay on in a warm boot, the salient point is that pushing the power button had no effect.
Hey Electohead04...I purchased a Logitech L23-6518 over a month ago, shortly after my last post in this thread. Thanks anyway.
Hey kcOraf...thanks for the response. There is one thing that still makes me wonder if I have something else happennig, when this occurs and I try to do a warm boot the LEDs stay on, and the fans continue to run, it doesn't turn off. I have to unplug the computer to turn it off.
I don't mind checking out the BIOS, but what specifically am I looking for, and how do I do it?
Recently I've had a intermittent problem starting up, once in a while when I turn on the computer all I get is a blank screen, the PSU and CPU fans are running so I know it's powering up, but if I try to reboot it nothing happens. I usually wind up having to unplug the computer to turn it off, and after pluging it back in it works fine. Can someone please tell me what is going on, is this an indication of failure in the works?
I have a friend who is running XP, and when he goes to startup the install wizard anounces "Found New Hardware" and lists two programs that he had tried and uninstalled. When he looks for them, they aren't to be found in search, add/remove hardware, or add/remove software. Can someone please recomend a solution for this?
Is your computer a Asus S1 P111? The specs you listed just make the requirements for the XP Pro which would explain why it was slow. If you do have the S1 P111 you can increase its RAM up to 2GB of PC3200, and I would go for 512MB myself, it will speed things up nicely. How long does your computer run before it shuts down, does it go though the whole startup? Have you added any things else to it, like a different graphics card? This link will expain that this may not work:
http://www.hothardware.com/viewarticle.cfm?page=3&articleid=672&cid=8
What did you format and install, and was this before or after the computer started shuting down?
These are bogus alerts, they're trying to sell you their prodcuts. Popup blockers will (should) block these. What did you change so that you're now getting popups?
That's a good point, and I will go there...thanks again.
Thanks Killer Typo...that's pretty much what I thought, but I wasn't sure. I went to the web site suggested and ran their scan, they say that they will get back to me within a couple of days with their results, I figure at least I'll know what shape "they" consider my BIOS to be in. If they find something and then want money to fix it...well, you know what I'm not going to do. But just for kicks and grins I'll post their findings here.
I was poking around my computer with Everest and found a suggestion that I should upgrade my BIOS, it even provided me with a link for the web site. Is there any danger in upgrading the BIOS, and how would this enhance my computer?
Have you run any AV or spyware?
Hi Cdot...in your description you state, "after a doing that for a few seconds it will just die", are you referring to the fan or the computer?
Dosen't your AV provide you with a means of deleting the infected files?
Do those continue to show up in search after being deleted?
It is pretty much a standard, you shuold be able to just R/R it in just a few minutes. There is a data and a power cable that only goes on one way, just don't try to force it. I don't know what your OS is, but if you're running MS Windows your computer should recognize the new device and the install wizard will walk you through it. You will need software with it, I bought the Nero 6.0 Ultra a Ebay for $13.99 plus shipping, not a bad deal! Just take that puppy and pop it the DVD and follow the prompts. You may be able to find a cheaper unit out there, but the NEC has a solid reputation, it is not a POS, and at that price you ain't gonna get took! lol ;)
Try downloading Everest Home Edition, click on computer, and this will identify most everything from your mobo to your CPU and chipset.
Mine died recently and I found this deal on the NEC 3520A:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827152039
This was selling for $63.00 around last Christmas, now it's going for $39.99 plus $4.00 shipping.
Dang! I hate when that happens.
Hey guys...I'm beginging to think this has been a exersize in futilitly, after investing close to eight hours into this endeavor. I just found out that I could purchase the Nero Vision Express for .99 cents, and the Nero 6.0 Ultra for $13.99 at Ebay.
Cable and DSL are words we hear about in this rural community, but that's about it. Satallite is available if you're willing to spend about $30.00 a month, I'ld rather spend that on fishing or something as lucrative. Oh well, it's all part of the learning curve I guess. Thanks anyway.
I have Nero 5.5 express which came with my CD-RW, and am now realizing that it is basically a teaser and will have to purchase the 6.0 ultra to get the whole program. I have one friend who has the Nero 6.0 ultra and swears by it, and I have a second friend who swears by Roxio...I could sure use some help sorting the two.
At this time I only have a CD-RW, but will be installing a DVD-RW in the near future.
Using Nero express, I was trying to copy a short video using the Video CD option, and a message came up explaining that I would need MPEG-2 in order to do this, why they would offer this option without that capability is another issue for another time. I found a definition for m-peg, but what is mpeg-2, and how do I go about getting it?
I have tried to download a free trial of Nero 6.0 Ultra three times now without success. This download is 33MB, and takes about three hours to complete. The first two times I used Firefox as the browser, and the third using IE. The 2nd attempt simpley stalled about halfway through, but the 1st and 2nd concluded with the same message: CRC failed in Nero\nero.exe Unexpected end of archive, on the last attempt using IE a second meassage came on telling me that there was a problem with IE and that they were going to have to shut it down. What the heck is going on?
Never mind... the CD-R is toast.
I have a CD-R, and was given a CD-RW, and would like to set them up as slave and master. I know about the jumper on the rear of the units, and the data and power cords, but what do I need to do to coordinate the two?
I removed the CD-R and installed the CD-RW with Nero 5.5 before I knew that I could use both drives, so I'll re-install the other. Do I need to install the Nero again for the second unit? What else do I need to do?
Thanks Thong Ispector...yes I did install the nero express. I'm off to puchase some media!
Hey Zoned...the Microsoft XML Core Service was formerly known as the XML Parser.
By the way...it was a yellow question mark. What sort of problem?
I installed a CD-RW today and went to the local Staples to purchase some discs, and very shortly there after I found out that I needed an education.
Are the blank discs called media?
My CD-RW is 52x32x52x, does this mean that I need a specific blank disk?
What sort of specs do I need to know about to make a purchase?
What is the difference between the Staples brand and other major manufacturers?
And of course, is there something that I should have asked?
I was reading a thread regarding a yellow exclamtion mark, and it reminded me that I have two icons on my desktop that have yellow question marks just to the right and above them, what do they indicate? One is for my printer, and the other is for microsoft XML 4.0 which was an automatic update, and can anyone tell me why I would need a parser? Thanks
Right click on IE, from the menu click on properties, you should have a page with a bunch of tabs at the top and the first page should be general, on this page it will show address and a box with a web address inside, what is it please? And then please go to connections, what is listed as you default ISP?
Are you saying that you have a split page after you try to reach IE?
And it would help ever so much if you could please provide me with the error message.
I'm not sure just what is going on here yet, there is some conflicting information, but my gut feeling is that you have a problem with your internet service provider (ISP), and may benifit from giving their customer service a call. Please do this and then let us know what you find out, we will still be here.
Hi again...If you don't have IE, what are you entering the address in? And please tell me what you were clicking on when you got the error message, and what did it say?
Did you restore the shortcut?
What are you clicking on when you get the error message?
And what does the error message say?
By lost the IE, i'm guessing that you mean the icon on the desk top is missing, if that is the case there is an easier way to replace it.
Click on start
Go to search
Type in Internet Explorer
Click on search
In the search results you will find a few IE icons, right click on the one which reads "Iaunch Lnternet Explorer Browser". A minu will appear, left click on create shortcut., and this should restore the IE icon to you desktop.
I just started the computer this evening, and the tray slid shut, and works now! That's it, I'm going for an exorcisim.
Well...the plot thickens! Last night when I was playing with this I shut down the computer, and when it went to restart a message came up in the BIOS, it reads: See Master Drive ATAPI Incompatible...Press F1 to resume. It wouldn't repeat when I did a reboot, this morning I removed the data cable to see what would happen with the LED, and when I restarted the computer the same message came up. (By the way...the LED stays on when the tray is closed). I looked this up:
Short for AT Attachment Packet Interface, an extension to EIDE (also called ATA-2) that enables the interface to support CD-ROM players and tape drives.
So now I'm guessing that this is a software issue, can anyone help me with this please? And should this be moved to the Windows forum?
No Way...I was refering to the author of the thread, what was it...catchup, catch22, or something like that?
Hey guys...this person is a self aggrandizing wanabe autocrat with a tendecy toward pompous pontification. This person gets off on this crap...let's cut him loose.
Thanks for the response guys...I did open it with a pin, reclosed it, rebooted it, just the danged LED comes on. Is there any possibilty that this is a software problem?
I had another thread ealier asking about whether or not to save an installation file, and Catweazle suggetsted that I save on a disk, I responded that I didn't have a RW CD...looks like I'm heading that way!
I went to veiw some pictures, but the CD's tray wouldn't open. I went to add/delete hardware to troubleshoot the optical system, and it appeares to be ok. The green LED comes on when I try to access the CD, but that's it.
Operating System Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
CPU Type AMD Athlon, 600 MHz (6 x 100)
Motherboard Name MSI K7Pro (MS-6195) (6 PCI, 1 AGP, 3 DIMM)
Optical Drive CD-ROM Drive/G6D
I am well versed in the use of a VOM, and can recognize and trouble shoot most components on a PC board. But I don't know where to start with this one, I'm new to computers (first computer given to me 11/2004).
I do appreciate your response.
