It is a page of interesting information, the first one. Does it recognise all your memory?Does it show [all] your drives [usb as well as hdds]? What version is the AMI, and what is your motherboard make and model?

gerbil 216 Industrious Poster

Ah. Well, you could try a RTC reset by pulling the battery, but this sounds easier [battery is tough to get at?]: http://www.sammynetbook.com/forum/threads/9287-cmos-password-NC10
Funnily enough, that procedure on most machines also resets any BIOS password that may exist.
Still cannot enter BIOS Setup with F2? Ok, flashing....
Make a bootable flashdrive; use HPUSBDisk from:
http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/HP-USB-Disk-Storage-Format-Tool-Download-123786.html
and boot files from:
http://www.sevenforums.com/attachments/tutorials/42023d1260810265-ms-dos-bootable-flash-drive-create-win98boot.zip
or from:
http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=196/
Next, load the correct BIOS update utility onto it: choose the correct DOS Executable from this page:
http://www.samsungpc.com/08/products/nc10/firmware.html#firmware

Insert USB key, start sys and it should flash directly.
Problems during flashing can be dire. Take care, read up on it. If a flash does not work, try again, and then perhaps again with another Dos executable

gerbil 216 Industrious Poster

Does the F2 key not get you into BIOS Setup?
Without BIOS running a Linux pgm won't get loaded, even for a boot. You would have to pull the hdd, slave it elsewhere, to get data off it.
"No, not unless you have a REALLY old machine." was in reference to the CMOS battery question; in modern machines the sys config data is held in memory elsewhere [not CMOS]. BIOS builds such a table and stores it, and will pass it to the OS if you set it so, but you can force the OS to read its own hardware data by a BIOS setting.
A hardware item can cause an error such as you are getting. Or BIOS itself.
I don't like to recommend BIOS flashing, but it might help...

gerbil 216 Industrious Poster

By a reinstallation of the OS.
Hmm. Oh well.

gerbil 216 Industrious Poster

No, not unless you have a REALLY old machine. Could be a hardware issue. But first, the simple option: go into BIOS setup, the Advanced? section, and learn about the PnP options to reset the data. Else there [may] [is likely to] be an option for the OS to read hardware configuration data itself, and not to copy it from BIOS. Try that.

I'd trust Atribune before I'd trust Norton [to do the jobs they say they can]. The first link is safe, so is the file. http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
So if you are certain that that is your problem with the popups,go ahead and dl it, run it. A brief guide:
Save the file to your desktop, dclick l2mfix.exe, press Install button and follow on.
Close other programs because sys will reboot during fix.
Open the new l2mfix folder on your desktop. Dclick l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix [type 2, press enter], press any key to reboot your computer. L2mfix will scan your computer and finally notepad will open with a log.
Paste contents here if you wish for help.

That's a related article??
Mmm, cscgal, I cannot copy what i have typed in direct entry section. Using Opera V12 here, as you would know... if I highlight any direct entry section and rclick, Opera presents me with the same options as if I had rclicked in a blank space ( page operations), no Copy, Paste or Cut. Ctrl-C, V, A etc do work. Look, I'm just whingeing... I just must become used to using the keyboard actions here, is all. Those rclick things used to work, I need to adjust. Easily done. I got caught often with the bracket, too, but you seem to have fixed that.

gerbil 216 Industrious Poster

Mmm... now that I know what it is for [the parrot] I am not so bothered by it. I was just confused by it's actions... eg. having to Copy that if I wished to edit in Notepad, and not being able to Copy my direct input.
I have PM'd the offending post to Deceptikon for review re code snippet detection.
My lil rant... I don't so much mind stuff breaking if I can work on it, perhaps fix it. Software I cannot, so that irritates me.
Cheers.

gerbil 216 Industrious Poster

I'd like to respond to a poster, but i get a red warning about a code snippet being not correctly formatted. There is no code in my post, just some log references and a URL.
This site... it's getting beyond me... i do not follow the reason for the parroting of my work as I type.... I haven't a clue about whitespace-sensitive text....what is whitespace? Paste does not appear as an option, only Ctrl-V...
I click on the parrot text, it disappears, I click in the typed section, the parrot reappears.. what is going on? I only have so much patience with stuff like this.

Hello, Frances. Someone will be in to help you soon. I do not have time to fully read your log. As a first step, and a quite important one, please choose one AV service to remove, and remove it now. I would suggest removing McAfee [i use Avast]. Having more than one AV service is inadvisable. They interfere, you may not get full protection.

gerbil 216 Industrious Poster

Mmm. Thanks for those replies, they are helpful. I shall download it onto/upgrade a clone of my OS to see what it is all about. That way I won't be caught with the lack of reversion, and won't get locked out of my current sys which is set up just tickety boo.

Hi.
"Today I tried to download some Auction software called Auctionic and the same pop up window came up saying save or cancel auctionic.exe which is a Binary File??? (1.9 MB)" This is a common window, generally with the options to Run, Save, Cancel, Help. If you Run the software the application will be installed immediately it finishes downloading from the site (it will download to a temporary folder in your browser, and be deleted eventually, automatically). If you Save the file you get to nominate where it is saved, you get to keep it until you delete it, and you can install the software at your leisure by simply dclicking that file. Don't worry about it being a binary file, lots are.
Openoffice? Well, I would save the file to install, because it is a large file, of a size that I would not wish to have to download again for whatever reason. So, you simply Save, and then go to the folder where you save such things, and dclick that file, then follow the installation process.
As far as the Adobe, Flashplayer errors are concerned, well, perhaps you need to update or reinstal them after first uninstalling.
Firefox. Hmm. Uniinstall, download the latest version from the site, and reinstall.
Good luck. And everyone is new to computing at some stage.
MAy I suggest Opera as a browser? It employs a smart downloader, giving you the option to pause and resume such large …

Windows 8 is available for download as a release preview upgrade for people wishing to familiarise themselves, and test. Point: why should I get W8? I am using XP and yes, I know support falls over in two years, but I am very happy with what it does... it fills my requirements absolutely. W7? Haven't bothered with it for that very reason. Opinions?

Or the CCF (cold cathode fluorescent) lamps in there are going bad (they do fail, but rarely) or the lamp power supply is overheating. If you are competent with such electronics a replacement is straitforward enough; if not competent then it's a job for a tech.
The CCF lamps provide the illumination, the LCD elements are what they shine through. If the CCF lamps fail then you should just be able to perceive a a very dark or faint image on the screen.

So eHarmony's security has been broken again. I have absolutely no jokes about that. None.
But hang on. Doesn't hacking mean those members might get to be contacted by people? That's why they are there in the first place? And if LinkedIn was hacked then once again, the aim of the site is fulfilled. LinkedIn is all about creating new contacts.

gerbil 216 Industrious Poster

But you are able to run other .exe files, right, Techno? That's the main thing.

gerbil 216 Industrious Poster

Right. Reset the Print Spooler to automatic, it's not the one I was interested in.
The problem lies with a startup entry in registry or elsewhere, and the best way to find that and fix it is with Autoruns. Download it (a zip archive) from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx
Or you can Run it from the site - there is a link for that.
Start Autoruns, it will open at the Everything tab. Search for and uncheck every instance of dlcjtime.dll -there may be more than one entry. Click OK, reboot.
Did that work?

gerbil 216 Industrious Poster

And you are sure that file is where that message says XP is looking for it : C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\DRIVERS\W32X86\3\DLCJtime.dll ?
The message pops at system start? Maybe something that that software depends upon has not also been started; it's a Dell software, go into Services, find Dell printer entry and set it to Manual, and Stop it. That way, when you wish to print the service will start.at that time, and not at system start.

gerbil 216 Industrious Poster

Firefox in future will not support XP orig and XP-SP1. SP3 is still supported.
Tygr, start your machine, press F8 a few times during the BIOS stage and if the Advanced option screen opens, check the box against Disable Auto restart on errors.
Then give us the code that comes up when Windows fails.
The vid card... no, it would not necessarily blink in Safe mode.

Lordt (that capital okay with you...?), i believe the rationale behind launching explorer windows in a separate process is that explorer runs your desktop; if in a separate process some file or folder you open is so corrupted that it kicks explorer silly then you will still have your desktop. So, if you set it so, 2 instances are available to you. Of course, task manager being altogether another shell, you can use that to kill explorer. If you can start it without explorer - crl-shift-esc....
This is the key that is controlled by that checkbox: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\SeparateProcess
Altering the checkbox forces a re-read of registry by explorer (notice that desktop flicker?), if you alter the reg entry manually you must also force a re-read by closing/opening explorer.
This key... HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\DesktopProcess\Policy\SeparateProcess
seems to only set the parameters for the checkbox. All rather moot now that you have removed XP.

gerbil 216 Industrious Poster

Well, that is interesting, rman. I get the default explorer process running with desktop; if I open explorer windows no more open. Setting "Launch... in sep process" will give me another instance. But only one, no matter how many windows are open. : so two max..

gerbil 216 Industrious Poster

Read up, rman. You will not get more than 2 explorer processes no matter how many windows you open.

Your BIOS may have an option to icrease the cdrom boot time setting (my AMI BIOS does, I have it set at 30sec, but 15 should suffice). Remove the HDD from the boot list, if then the machine boots with a recovery or installation cd to the Recovery Console then run fixmbr and fixboot.

Techno, don't be too fussed about Fixit Centre not working for you. It aint working. Fullstop. M$ is having problems with it. I tested it with Opera, Firefox and IE. "Fixit Centre encountered an error....".

gerbil 216 Industrious Poster

You really don't need software to do this, but it does make the job easier. You'd have to be going pretty forensic to bother....
All the connected devices' (now and ever) information is stored in registry under a few keys... types, classes, descriptions, serials, colour of your eyes... Places to start are HKLM\mounted devices and Currentcontrolset\enum.
So if you ever use a removable drive to rip info offa your place of employment you better make sure to ditch the drive.
Ace, if you still have the problem with lost info on that drive give me a tickle (a PM) cos I just may not check back here otherwise... :) I like doin stuff to find stuff.

gerbil 216 Industrious Poster

bvm, where did you set the password? In BIOS? There is no advantage in doing that. At what stage is the computer asking for a passsword?
Please list the BIOS boot order. If your BIOS settings do not allow for an extended CD detection time of more than say, 20 seconds, then the boot process may skip to the next item in the order if it is slow reading the cd and discovering that it is bootable. Once the BIOS gets to any active hdd in the boot list it will not look further, even if that hdd is causing some problem.
It is possible that the hdd has a defective boot sector. That is repairable, but you need to be able to boot with something with that hdd connected in some way.

"Tried to download Windows Fix It For XP but was advised that
that my Toshiba Laptop cannot open exe. files."
If you have downloaded it successfully, then change the.exe extension to .com, and try to run it. If .com extensions are currently accepted by your laptop (ie. not affected by your problem) then it will work.

gerbil 216 Industrious Poster

I missed this line in your first post.. "It will connect up via Ethernet cable." That rather said that TCP/IP ws installed. sigh.
It is likely the CMOS RTC (real time clock) battery has failed, hence your needing to enter the time and date at startup. That would not lead to any other problems; your BIOS settings would not be otherwise affected. Your main battery has not anything to do with it.
SP3 removing software. Does this site help: http://h20180.www2.hp.com/apps/Lookup?h_lang=en&h_cc=us&cc=us&h_page=hpcom&lang=en&h_client=S-A-R163-1&h_pagetype=s-002&h_query=dv2000&submit=Go+%BB

gerbil 216 Industrious Poster

This may sound silly, but you do have TCP/IP enabled as a protocol? (Network Connections > Local Area Connection, Properties). There should be a check next to the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) entry, If that entry is not there, then choose Install, highlight Protocol, press Add.... and go from there.

Probably time to run chkdsk /r from your recovery console, either from your installation cd, or via download from one of:
http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.iso
http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/tools/bootdiscs/xp_rec_con.zip
http://www.mediafire.com/?rnuzmyjdwz2
It is an advantage to put the RC onto your systemdrive [C:]; instructions for doing this can be had from Microsoft via search.

Just a reply to your pc.... yes, you could manually delete obvious registry entries of Revo, but without the executables they will not be a problem, and don't worry about the space they occupy in there (a few blades of grass on a soccer field).

gerbil 216 Industrious Poster

I could read all the above, else I could just add this: with Opera, cut and paste are not rclick context options. Select and delete, Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V do work.
What ads? I don't see any...
But I do see every pc that I ever received (and deleted)... deletion is not an absolute, I thus note. That should make Homeland Security happy.
Oh, and when editing a post, if you omit the Reason field then you will be prompted for that, but the edit is lost...

I beg to differ, jb. Under XP, if there is an attempt to open explorer a check is first done to see if it is already running. If so, then a new window is opened via the first explorer instance. A second instance can be opened by checking Launch folder window under a separate process in Folder Options. But only a second will be opened this way. I think, but have not checked, that a second can also be opened under the System as owner...

gerbil 216 Industrious Poster

Pudgee, if you still have the problem then open msconfig, under the General tab check that you are not starting in Diagnostic services only, rather either Normal or Selective. If Selective, the top 3 boxes should be ticked. Under Services tab, if not all boxes are ticked then click the Enable All button. Restart.

gerbil 216 Industrious Poster

Somewhat more seriously, you could reinstall Revo over the top of the old installation, and then try Add/Rmv Pgms again. And if that fails just delete the pgm manually, anything related in DocsnSetts\User folder also. With the executables gone remnants are just a bit of wasted space, same goes for missed registry entries.

gerbil 216 Industrious Poster

Have you tried using Revo Uninstaller?

Corel .. Paintshop? It depends upon its commandline functions, whether it actually accepts commands with parameters. You could use a macro to repeat set tasks, but can you start Coreldrw with a commandline, executing a macro as a parameter? All programs [executables] will start with a commandline, but what is available to execute at that time depends on the program.
"VB would only open, close & operate programs specifically designed to work under VB." Depends upon the program, as mentioned before.

Do you have CCleaner? Is it set to under Tools > Drive Wipe to Wipe Free Space on that drive? Then uncheck that, delete the folders. By free space, CCleaner means space occupied by already deleted files [the files often still exist unless overwritten, but the pointer in the file manager is altered so as to show them as deleted].
If it is not set to wipe free space then it is playing at wiping some drive space, so uninstall CCLeaner, reinstall it, and delete those folders.

You know what the error means... that a pointer is referencing an incorrect location in memory.... and I am assuming that it is not happening very often, so it is not likely to be a corrupt device driver or other software.
