Also, is the CPU overheating? Are there any loose connections?
Have you run a virus scan?

Just a few things you may want to check...

Could be faulty memory or an overheating system. Can you give us the system temperature?

I don't have a Windows 2000 computer, but allow me to explain why I would want information on upgrading one.

Vista has been the source of a great deal of worry for me over the past few months. I have a laptop that currently has Windows XP Home Edition. It's extremely important that I get Windows Vista on this laptop as soon as it comes out, strangely enough, for personal reasons. I don't know if the laptop's systems specs are enough to handle Vista (only a gig memory and 128mb video ram), but I'm sure it's far too early to know that for sure.

Because of the software pre-installed on the machine, a clean install won't work. The reason why I am asking about upgrading from Windows 2000 is that I have never tried to run an upgrade before, and I'm thinking my mind might be able to rest easier if I learn a bit more about how the upgrade process works. I searched online, but the only info I was able to find was upgrading from 98 to XP. Windows 98 is a whole different type of operating system, so it's no wonder that the upgrade process is a real headache. I know that Windows 2000 is really NT 5.0, Windows XP is really NT 5.1, and Windows Vista is really NT 6.0, so I figured that the experience of upgrading from 2000 would be more similar to what my experience may be like in upgrading to Vista.

So, …

HAHA you broke it, thats why I never trust anyone with my pc unless they could pay for the damages they cause

Heck, fiddling with the OS is the best way to learn. I remember when I got my first PC(A state of the art Celeron @ 333MHz, 2.1Gig, 32 MB, PCI VGA, ISA sound card). I fiddled with it so much that I had to reinstall Windows 98 6 times within the span of one month. I was like "Hmm. The computer says modifying/deleting the contents of the Windows folder may cause the machine to stop working. Let's see what happens." So, I just deleted the contents of the Windows folder. And voila! Messed up computer...

McAfee scan shows no viruses. But at sysinfo.org, it lists ctfmon as a possible trojan. The file could be a legitimate Office XP file, but I'm fairly certain he has Office 97.

Any ideas about how to tell if the file is good or bad? I will have him try an online virus scan tomorrow.

Thanks ~ kAtH

It;s a legitimate Office XP file. You could delete it from startup.

I doubt that you only have one IDE channel though, most boards have two IDE channels minimum. What is the model of your system? You can also use

I've seen many motherboards with one IDE port. I hate those mobos

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Since you have one port with two devices connected, you need to get a PCI-IDE expansion card. This is nothing but a regular PCI card with 2-4 IDE ports. You can connect your new hard drive to this board.

Theres the problem internal damege very little bit commputer threaning or web sites.Open up the computer have a flash light out and lokk for scarshes. Then call windows and tell them where it's broken and send out for a new part. And don't tuch a part it can damege your computer.

Somehow I doubt this is a hardware fault, though I'm not ruling it out. I'd suggest you try the steps I had mentioned. If they don't help, try a reinstall and load the proper drivers.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Perform a virus scan and a spyware scan. Next, run Disk Defragmenter on your system drive (typically C: ). If this doesn't help, ensure that you have installed all the latest drivers for your motherboard, graphics card and sound card. If this doesn't help, consider a format and reinstall of windows.

As far as I have understood (and correct me if i am wrong) i can attach six devices (be it Hard disk or optical drive).

Two sata hard disks can be attached to two sata interfaces and
Two pata hard disks cab be attached to EACH ide interfaces

Thus all in all 6 hard disks (or say 5 hard disks and one CD rom can be attached) on my intel 865 GBF motherboard.

Now furthermore i also understand that for SATA hard disks there is no problem of master / slave.

But for each pata HDD attached to either IDE channel, we can have

primary master
primary slave
secondary master
secondary slave

NOW MY QUESTION IS THAT :

Say I am having two SATA hard disks

SATA Hard Disk One with windows advanced server 2000 OS (80GB)
SATA Hard Disk Two with windows XP professional (160GB)

ALso I am having three PATA hard disks

PATA Hard Disk One with windows advanced server 2000 OS (80GB)
PATA Hard Disk Two with windows XP professional (80GB)
PATA Hard Disk Three with windows XP professional (160GB)

In addition last but not the least one CD-ROM drive

BIG QUESTION:

WHAT SHOULD BE MY SETTINGS (which pata hard disk should be connected to which ide channel and whether as master or slave) SO THAT I AM ABLE TO BOOT FROM ANY HARD DISK (i get a choice when i power on my computer to select hard disk i …

Everything that I mentioned can be implemented in some form or fashion; you know it and I know it. Whether or not that would be good for efficiency, the user, or daniweb as a whole may or may not be true, but at the least debatable. They’re not quite empirical questions as you are suggesting.

What good is an idea or an implementation of an idea if it isn't good for efficiency, the user or the site as a whole?

I'm pretty sure people can come up with all sorts of ideas and suggestions. But we have to draw the line somewhere. Someone could suggest replacing the entire HTML site with a flash heavy version. But that would lock out millions of users who access this site with dial up lines. The point I'm trying to make is that even though there are many, many things that can be done, is it feasible? Can the means always do justice to the end? I don't think so.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Well, a laptop can handle minor to fair amounts of jolts. But in the end, it is a hard drive and the normal rules apply. Don't let it fall off, don't use the machine on bumpy terrain. It'll be fine while driving under normal conditions.

I have a Dell Computer - probably around 4 years old. A week ago, when I came home from work, their was a screen telling me I had an error and had to reboot. I thought it was no big deal - so I proceeded to reboot. When it started to boot up - all I heard was a clicking noise and then received this error:

Primary 0 drive not found

It gave me the option to press F1 to continue or F2 to run the setup utility

Either pressing F1 or F2, it brings me to the BIOS screen.

I looked though the setup section and under drive configuration it lists my Primary master drive as "unknown device"

In the boot sequence section as number 2 it says "Hard disk drive (not installed)

Anyone have any suggestions on what I should do? I'm concerned with trying to get some of the data off of the hard drive as well as whether it is really dead and if I need to buy a new hard drive.

Uh ih. That was the "Click of death". In all probabilities, the hard drive has crashed. Recover your data from backups. If the machine is in warranty, you could ask Dell for a new hard drive.

You could also try out the techniques mentioned here:

I have now installed windows on a different hard disk and have set the original as a slave, i can now access the drive, but can't retrieve all my documents, because being security concious i set some folders private, is there anyway i can get around this? also i had a lot of e-mails with outlook which i'd like to retrieve if i could.

If by setting folders private, you mean setting up NTFS access permissions, you could recover your data. Right click the file/folder and click Properties. Click the Security tab and click Advanced. Click the Owner tab. Under "Change owner to", click Administrators (or whichever user/group you want to give ownership to). Now check the box labelled "Replace owner on all subcontainers and objects." and click OK twice to exit the file properties. Now, right click the file/folder > Properties > Security tab > Advanced. Now, under the permissions tab, click the button labelled "Add". In the box that pops up, type the user/group you want to give permissions to and click OK. Now, under the box titled "Permission Entry for [file/folder name], under permissions, give the required permissions (or give full control, depending on your needs).Click Ok thrice to exit the properties. You should now be able to access files.

Regarding your problems with MS Outlook, you need to open up the Documents and Settings folder in your old Windows installation. Go to the following path: "\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook". Copy the file named outlook.pst …

Hi,
Okay, here's the deal. I've created a project which requires user registration. Now, the registration part works like a dream. However, when I tried implementing an option where the user can update his details, the update isn't working. It says I have an error in my update statement. I'm posting the code here. For the first recordset, when I comment out the line which actually carries out the command, the asp works perfectly. However, when I try to uncomment it and run the asp, I get an error :Error in UPDATE query". I've checked the asp and it's fine. Can anyone help me out please?
