Maybe you just happen to set it with 'Num Lock' enable automatically. Set it to disable again with Fn + NumLock on your laptop keyboard.

Yes you can. Most compatible apps can still be used after upgrade. You can update it using update manager. There should be an upgrade option that was optional...
so now you can't boot normally except plug in external vga and it would boot normally...
sounds like you got monitor faulty (internal)
I think you should get the previous Ubuntu distro like 10.04 and 10.10...
I'm still using 10.04 for their Long Term Support (LTS) so if anything's wrong they can fix it. 10.10 is good too and slightly better than 10.04 in term of graphics.
I've heard so many problem involving 11.04 and with new Unity including from new user to old one...
Can you get at least boot into BIOS?
If so, might be either windows fault or something else...
Hi, welcome to DaniWeb.
Say your XP is a mess and you want to reformat I assume...
You have 3 partition and you want to reformat XP partition only. XP need at least 2-4GB to run so the other two partition which has less than that (55MB and 300MB) can be ignore.
Also please mark your partition with correct drive letter. Let's say your XP is in C so write it down along with drive letter for each partition. This is for future reference and to avoid reformat the wrong partition.
Also please backup this folder 'Driver' in the directory below just in case
%windir%\system32\Driver
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Driver
You said you have XP OEM cd so first insert your OEM cd to cd/dvd drive and boot from it. (You might need to set boot from cd first from bios), press any key when the line 'Press any key to boot' show up. Let it run till the process stop by itself
Tab 'Enter' to enter XP installation. Now it'll show you list of partition you need to format. Just select the NTFS partition and press 'enter' to the next screen (be careful with selecting partition to format, you may formatted the wrong partition). Select 'Format NTFS (Quick)' and press 'Enter' again. Now it'll begin installing Windows XP to the chosen partition you set.
It'll restart by itself but you don't need to do anything and don't remove OEM cd just yet. It'll begin another process afterwards …
Might be you got a dead mobo... or power supply...
Even if all the fans and light are working doesn't mean power supply is okay... It may be at fault too...
Looks like most further step were already taken and I've no ideas to fix your pc momentarily...
Motherboard (MOBO) - Unknown
Power Supply Unit - Works but may not supply enough power to juice mobo
HDD - Assumed that it's fine
RAM - Same as above
VGA monitor - Also same
If you have a spare motherboard, might as well test with that and see if it works... If not, you might need to replace your mobo i'm afraid...
How big is the size of your USB drive?
Make sure you set it in default state
Capacity: depends
File System: FAT32 is the most recommended one but try exFAT as well if it's available
Allocation Unit Size: Set it to default
Volume Lable: anything you might want to name it
Check 'Quick Format'
might as well try to pull RAM out and check if your mobo is beeping.
If it's beeping for 3 times, it's RAM problem.
or try this... this kinda hard for starters
remove all connection, cables, HDD, RAM, CD/DVD Drive from your mobo and just left with power supply cable and power switch wire intact. Plug in back VGA cable in the back side and boot.
Check if it does make any differences...
anti-virus might have done something here. check your av setting.
also try this for windows error/problem
* open command prompt
* type in 'chkdsk' and press enter (it should be quick)
tell us the results when it's done...
Hi,
did you check everything is in order and double-checked?
* are your cpu fan working?
* are your keyboard lights up when you boot?
* did you reseat power supply cable to their place? one big and one small (usually yellow and black)
might as well boot your pc and let it run for about 20minutes and see whether it'll start to boot
others you have done so skip that.
maybe the DVD you're trying to eject may still in use...
it's commonly occur when you run something from disk drive and eject it without closing the program...
Check again which program affiliate with your burner... Maybe anti-virus had done a scan on your burner in background...
hi,
you can find any good cd burner software for ubuntu in Ubuntu software centre.
It should be on under Tools window.
compiz is not currently unstable for 11.04 because of they set unity as default desktop (I'm not totally sure about this)
Even if it's available in Ubuntu Software Centre doesn't mean it'll support compiz without any problem. Some computer may have problem running compiz.
I don't know the backdoor to get inside ubuntu in order to disable compiz so i think you'll need to reinstall ubuntu. If there's an important files that you need to back up, download Gparted live cd from other computer and burn it to a cd, then run Gparted.
Perhaps you might want to wait for other members to help you with this since I'm still learn to use ubuntu fully...
I have 3. One for personal use, one for utter spamming, and one for twitting...
Doesn't make any sense, does it?
But seriously, just two would be sufficient for regular internet user (personal and business) and one for light internet user. If you're paranoid, then 4 is best (personal, business, spam, and one for when other 3 fails)
Then again, having so many email account is not a big deal at all unless you like to stalk people a lot...
hi,
if you have a previous linux-image, you can return to 10.10 and disable compiz...
I haven't done this before because I haven't upgraded my 10.04 and try it yet but I like old one better than 11.04
Try to use shift + delete to delete those files. It entirely delete files without trashing it into recycle bin...
If that's not working, try third-party software to delete those. Malwarebytes have an extra tools to delete files so use it. Also you might want to check your external for virus because it might be virus dwelling in your external while replicating themselves in there...
Not enough information here... Need more details please...
Is it an external or normal HDD?
What kind of files and folder you want to delete?
@crunchie sorry if I'm being rude and all
truthfully, I did almost miss the link given by you. It was like a signature at first glance... If this also happen to the poster as well, might as well reminding him. sadly I don't want to write that detailed from the link so I just give first clue for virus infection and proceed if it do happen.
Sorry again for being rude..
Are you using old pendrive or new one (about 2 month or so)?
Might be your pendrive is already dead and you'll need replacement for a new one...
Most pendrive will be out of commission anyway. There's a lot of pendrive you can buy at very low price...
@jholland
I know... just reminding the poster if he doesn't see the link given my crunchie...
You probably have virus in your computer... Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and run a scan to confirm it...
If it does found it, please proceed to instruction link posted by crunchie to completely remove them... He'll help you out till you done
MBAm is good and will remove most malware, just like what the above experts posters have said:)
You can do a malware scan using MBAm 2 times to make sure all malware is being clean up or removed. Malware remover tool will not conflict with Anti Virus. You might want to try out Spyware Blaster too.
Spyware Blaster should be installed after all malware/virus is removed from the system. Also, spyware blaster isn't for scanning for malware, it just prevent fraud websites and malware from entering the system. I also use one and updated every two weeks or so, good to say it protect my computer well enough for 6 month now...
Probably it installed to your computer without your knowing, just like rouge anti-virus like to do... Like Jakob said, without a proper uninstall program in add/remove list, it most probably a malware...
It may just installed on your browser only like IE and Firefox. Check their add-ons if both have the program installed on each browser if you want to confirm things up...
Try to create another account (another user set with admin) and try to log in to the newly created user account.
If it slow down as admin account does, perhaps you might need chkdsk your windows directory...
you can used as many anti-malware you want to use but you only have to use one anti-virus for each pc to avoid conflict. Also, avoid using real-time anti-malware scan like SD Spybot as sometimes will may conflict with either anti-malware and anti-virus...
If malwarebytes marks them as a thread, might be better to remove them... ^^
That's weird... I thought it was a laptop since it has acer brand (usually laptop) but if it's desktop, there may be some hope...
Open your desktop casing and search for the PCI audio card (you can determine which one by looking at the back of your desktop and check where you plugged in your speaker cable), not an integrated one. If you see one, try to remove it. You may need to unscrew it first before you can remove it.
After removing it, try to plug your speaker cable to integrated one (attached in your motherboard port) and boot your pc.
If it doesn't work, you may need to install the correct driver this time. If it still won't work, then the integrated sound port is already unusable and you need an audio pci card replacement...
p/s: A pci card that he may sent to you might work so it's your choice whether to test my solution or go with the card he'd sent to you. If it comes with a disc, then you don't have to worry about searching for the driver, it'll work fine.
Give it a try first and let us know the progress...
Yes, it does this, so there must be something wrong with it.
I contacted the seller and he said at home he has a Card that i install into a pci slot, and comes with a disk that will add 5.1 surround sound.
Does that sound ligit?
Sorry, I can't understand that. Can you explain in a bit more detail?
If the seller got the driver for the c-media, might as well ask him to deliver those driver to you or upload it somewhere and give you the link for the driver. Maybe that would work...
When it comes to notebook hardware, I'm still newb so I can't help you much... sorry.
ignore my last post... I didn't notice this page already expanded.
Try to uninstall the c-media driver and reboot. After reboot, if it come up with 'add new hardware' just cancel it and install realtek driver. If it still showing C-media, then something is wrong with your pc...
Well maybe the cable inside the desktop has wrong connection. Open your desktop casing and check a cable with name 'Ac'97' or 'HD audio' embedded on the head cable.
If it's HD audio, then follow uv4u post and you should be fine...
Sorry for the late reply...
Well just want to clarify things a bit. Hope you don't mind...
Does the clicking sound come from your speaker or from your computer? (if your computer is a desktop, not a laptop)
If you have disable your AV for this test, did you re-enable it?
If possible, just want to make sure your system is entirely clean, do an online scan. Use Kaspersky, McAfee, or any online AV scan to confirm that no common malicious files bothering you...
Charging a very high cost ($199) just to remove something isn't worth it. Don't get fool even from official tech help unless you really trust their work...
Hi,
what kind of clicking noise did you hear? When does it happen etc. starting computer, shutdown, watch movies?
Tracking cookies is not exactly a spyware/malware, it's just what your browser always create to store your username and password for some sites. Anti-spyware marked it as dangerous because hacker can steal your confidental document within those cookies so it's advices to delete it.
I can't find any malicious threat in your log so I think your system is clean but I would say wait for a senior members to help you out in advance in case I'm missing some important point...
What is your computer specs? Are you using desktop or laptop?
We need to know about it so we can search for the problem easily and come up with possible solution for it...
Try this just in case...
* Go to device manager and select the hardware with yellow exclamation mark
* Uninstall it just in case
* Click on scan for hardware changes icon and a window will pop up
* Select no to update driver from windows update (if any)
* Select install from a list or specific location
* Select Don't search.
* Select any compatible driver listed in the box and click next.
* See if the hardware works and confirm if no yellow icon show up in device manager
First check out if your CD or media file is not corrupted. Later on check if your cd/dvd drive is connected properly.
if it is able to write disk up to 99%, it means it was connected properly... It have to be either cd/dvd rom problem, software problem or driver problem. Correct me if i'm wrong...
Also, did you try to burn other data using other software?
Try to check whether your cd/dvd-rom has correct drivers install. If not, reinstall driver for your cd/dvd-rom and try to burn again. If the problem persist, download a small .iso format file (any would do) for example MHDD3.6.iso from internet and burn it using windows default cd burner (just right click the .iso file and select 'burn with' "windows cd/dvd burner" or that has windows title in it.
If that won't work, then there's something wrong with your cd/dvd-rom hardware. If you have an external dvd-rom burner, try to use it and burn any cd/dvd and see if it works...
