It was back in November 2010 when we first took an in-depth look at the Android tablet alternatives to the Apple iPad , and to be honest we weren't really that impressed with any of them. The new Motorola Xoom, however, promises to change all that. The Xoom is the first tablet to feature the latest Google Android 3.0 'Honeycomb' Operating System, and was the Best of Show winner at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show earlier this year. But how does what some have been calling the first Android-powered tablet that deserves to be taken seriously stack up against the new iPad 2 which we also recently reviewed here at DaniWeb with some mixed emotions? Let's find out...

xoom001.jpg

I like Android 3.0 Honeycomb and I like the Motorola Xoom, and if it had been launched on to the market last year in direct competition with the original iPad then my money along with my recommendation of where to spend yours would have been firmly with the Xoom courtesy of the cameras, the superior web browsing client and the added processing power. But does that still hold true now that the second generation iPad is out, complete with cameras and a lot more processing power itself?

Perhaps the most important part of the Xoom is not the hardware, or even the apps, but rather the OS. Android 3.0 Honeycomb is the first version of Google's Android operating system that comes …

You identify a DaniWeb admin by doing what you've just stated, hovering your mouse over the avatar.

Sponsors are people who make a financial contribution towards their membership of DaniWeb and get certain extra benefits as a result. See here.

Team colleagues are generally ex-moderators, or people who were amongst the elite group of folk who helped get DaniWeb off the ground in the first place.

A staff writer is someone who provides commissioned editorial content (news/reviews) for DaniWeb, and is an appointed position.

A moderator is a member whose expertise and enthusiasm has been rewarded by a promotion that allows them to spend untold hours helping folk, clearing out spam and dealing with troublemakers - all out of the goodness of their own hearts.

A super moderator is like a moderator, only more super :) Actually, it's the most senior moderator of all.

An admin is at the top of the DaniWeb management tree, tasked with the smooth running of DaniWeb behind the scenes as well as resolving community issues.

A Queen of DaniWeb is Dani, she started the whole thing...

Hope that helps a bit.

Don't take it to heart, is all I can say. Most reasonable people would probably agree with you on this one, but every member has the right to their own opinion and to express that (as long as they do not break the rules in terms of being unpleasant etc) by leaving reputation and up or down voting.

Hehe, prepare for disappointment come the World cup then - based upon the overall Irish performance in the 6N. Sad to say, for much of the time, the Irish looked like a team past the sell by date.

SafeSync now limits size ? New pricing !!!

That's a shame, and as you say does limit the appeal somewhat... :(

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

I think you ought to declare your interest:

SafeSync - PC Pro not-so-special offer will cost you double

I have no interest to declare. I am a freelance writer, one of the publications I contribute to is PC Pro. I have no interest in, or even awareness of, the marketing deals that the publisher (Dennis Publishing) does with various vendors. Indeed, until you pointed it out (and I'm sorry I missed your comment at the time of posting) I had no idea PC Pro even had such an offer.

Kudos have to go to Apple for taking the totally dead, and I mean Dodo dead, consumer tablet computing concept and not only breathing new life into it but turning it into an object of desire with the iPad. The new iPad 2 does not feel so aspirational. Sure, there is an increase in the wow factor but not to the degree that you those who have already invested in an iPad will feel compelled to upgrade immediately, and perhaps more importantly convince non-iPad owners to buy into the Apple dream at the expense of the Android one . Which side to take in the tablet wars could be about to become even more problematical with the first of the Android 3.0 Honeycomb devices, the Motorola Xoom, about to hit the shops. You can see our review of the Motorola Xoom here later in the week, but back to the iPad 2 and what the new version brings to the tablet party.

ipad2-000.jpg

At first glance there's not a lot to see that is different, but the devil is always in the detail. So while the screen size and resolution stay the same (9.7 inches and 1024x768) if you get your ruler out you will find that the iPad 2 has shrunk down to 186x241x9mm - in other words, rather incredibly, a third slimmer than the original or thinner than an iPhone 4 even. Combine that with the fact that it is now …

I think the overall result for the 6n was about right, in terms of England on top ahead of France. Ireland and Wales could have switched places, as could Scotland and Italy in the end.

England - typical loss of focus half way through a tournament
France - great start, great finish, loss of focus in the middle
Ireland - great finish, crap the rest of the tournament
Wales - never got out of first gear
Scotland - brief flickers of promise but nothing more
Italy - great performance against France but little else

All in all, not the most memorable of 6N tournaments for me...

First things first, you can feel free to ask your questions here at DaniWeb without worrying about having to pay - this is a free IT support and discussion community, nobody charges you anything to provide all the help and advice you need.

As for the rankings you mention, well every time you post something to DaniWeb members of the community have the opportunity to either up or down vote your posting depending on whether they found it useful, interesting or perhaps confusing or in breach of the rules. Most of the time, most members will not vote on postings at all, but if you've contributed something particularly worthy people may be inclined to reward your effort with an up vote and possibly some reputation points which are just a further method of showing gratitude.

The more you post and the greater your reputation score becomes, so the more power you have to influence the reputation of others.

Well this is the XP forum, so yes DaniWeb supports this. What, precisely, did you want to know?

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

The main page displays how many registered members DaniWeb has, rather than how many active members, how many members with more than 10 posts, how many members which have posted this week or how many members had toast for breakfast this morning. It's as good a metric as any, and probably easier to calculate (from a resource load perspective) than attempting to come up with some formula that defines what an active member actually is. We have members who joined, never posted anything but found what the help they needed and then went away for a couple of years before coming back when they needed more help, and even then never posted (other than maybe a PM to say thanks).

Nobody could disagree that Apple is already the market leader in the handheld sector, be it the iPhone, iPod Touch or at a stretch the iPad. Unless the straitjacket was too tight and making it difficult to talk sense, I guess ;)

Everyone involved in the DaniWeb community, from the membership right through to the management, would like to offer sympathy and support to those suffering as a consequence of unfolding events in Japan. Unfortunately, some despicable types just see such tragedy as an opportunity to scam the kind-hearted majority out of cash that should be heading to those who need help.

tsunamiwarncert.jpg

As if the 8.9 magnitude earthquake which struck Japan, just north of Tokyo, last Friday wasn't bad enough, that was quickly followed by a devastating tsunami which has literally washed away some coastal towns and caused an unthinkable loss of human life. Amidst all this chaos, the lack of power and backup power, along with structural damage suffered by the Fukushima nuclear plant amongst others has led to explosions at three of the four reactor buildings and consequential radiation leak.

US-CERT has warned members of the public to be on the alert for email scams, fake antivirus and phishing attacks based around the earthquake and tsunami disaster. In that warning, first issued immediately after the tsunami struck and the scale of the tragedy became clear, CERT predicted that it would act as a magnet for the kind of online low-life that sends spam with malicious links, or puts out fake appeals for charitable donations. It would appear that CERT was, sadly, correct.

Security vendor Sophos has reported one such scam which is circulating and claims to originate from the British Red Cross. …

The Scottish defence was pretty damn good, plenty of heart in the second half. I think England took the afternoon off, lucky to get the win. Predictable...

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Big congrats to Italy. That put the biggest smile on my face of the whole 6N so far, even bigger than when England thrashed them. Italy deserved that win, France played with so little heart it was embarrassing.

And well done Wales, about time some of the luck of the Irish went your way - although how the linesman missed the new ball for that pass to Phillips is beyond me. Was he polishing his nails or something?

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

I think some national coaches just have a real problem with letting go of what they know and trust, even when it patently isn't working any more, and taking a risk on something new. Certainly that was the case with Johnson and England, where he insisted on keeping all his old chums from the World Cup winning side - Borthwick as captain was the most obvious old mate hanger on I reckon - and kept losing until he pushed them away for the new blood that has proved so devastating in the 6N so far.

The Boks need to select those awesome young players though, and start kicking the old guard into touch. Let's face it, they have looked pretty static in many of their recent games.

South Africa now reminds me of England six months ago: all that promising young talent, but a manager who prefers to play the same tired old men in the same tired old way. No disrespect to Wilkinson, but look at the difference Flood made at number 10...
