hi,in case the lost storage is programs,i don't know of any software that knows what programs you want to keep and don't want to keep.you could start with turning off and then back on the [restart computer]system restore .as for your term .exe's every program on your computer has a.exe to run the program
as for must have downloads that sounds like a folder you created yourself,only you know if you want to get rid of them Me i would burn that one to disk and delete it from the hdd for the space.

Well I've had the PCI card installed for a couple of years without problem so I don't think it'd be with it being too close to another card.
I ran AVG today and it was clean, I also run CCleaner regularly. Maybe next time it happens I'll run CCleaner and see if it makes a difference.

it is a bit weird ,maybe next time do a alt +ctrl+del and check processes and see if any programs are using excess cpu

Well my HP Presario V4310nr dvd rom drive is no longer workin' properly,i wanna buy a new dvd rom drive internal ,but so far no luck.

One of my friend's pc has got the prob. His mouse does not work after the pc restarts. And when the pc is restarting the bios sometimes boot lately and then the problem occurs. That is, when the bios screen appears lately the mouse does not work. Windows starts normally and the keyboard works properly but the mouse does not work. No message appears informing that "hardware missing" or something like that.

Sometimes the DVD does not work either after the pc functions for sometime.

you friends has some problems ,but you post is of little help in determining what could be causing it ,did you try a new mouse ,also what if anything do you do when the bios screen appears did try setting defaults and saving changes .

The battery being bad after 3 years is actually more likely than the power adapter being broke. Although I don't have any numbers for proof so take that as an opinion. However the battery is likely Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) to which whether or not they've been used they start deteriorating from the go, internal resistence means they lose how much charge they can hold whether or not they are being used, his battery is very possibly older than his 3 year laptop to which if that is true then it'll have had longer to deteriorate, if the battery is also exposed to abnormally high temperature that also shortens the lifetime, eventually the battery won't be able to hold any charge & the laptop will require to be plugged into the mains at all times unless a replacement battery is installed.

power adapter maybe broke , Im referring to the power jack that is built into the motherbaoard, my laptop had a short in the power jack and melted the tip of the power adapter,therefor it would not charge the battery, so any thing is possible

have you done any scans for virus/trojans .
some free scans for trojans .like malwarebytes ,and for cleaning of temp file and other garbage and registry fixes ,CCleaner ,just good maintenance and the programs are proven and free to use, if you install CCleaner ,when installing make sure to un check to install Yahoo toolbar ,

home or pro or ,vista ],does you computer have onboard sound device or a add in sound card ,is mouse usb or ps/2.
also if you use msconfig[go to start ,run ] ,you can turn off all services and then reboot and turn them on one by one until you find the problem if a service is the problem

sounds like its overheating ,if you have a addin video card ,check its fan,and also maybe a motherboard chipset fan.you may need to remove cpu fan/heatsinc and add some heatsinc compound .

also go start /run , type in ,eventvwr.msc
check system errors may show something .

may i also suggest you go to the software development section ,see link above here!

any computer component that hot will never run !
if the cpu got that hot it may never work again and will need to be replaced

I'm a newbie. How do I find the file I need to copy and paste?

open outlook express ,click on address book in the top tool bar , when it opens go to FILE ,in there go to export ,chose address book,save it to you desktop or where ever ,copy it to a thumb drive or what ever ,then to transfer follow above but when in address book ,go file and import ,and chose the file you saved and you will have transferred the addresses !

I bought an HP DV4T-1000 model laptop 8 months back.It worked fine for 6months,
When I start (sometimes it works fine) it up at first the screen will not come on(only black screen is seen) but lights on and the fan on.
In order to get it to start right I have to hold down the power button and turn it off and on like 8 to 9
times or more before it finally starts normally.
I want to know whether it is hardware problem or any software problem.If it is hardware problem I have guarantee.

call HP tech support if you still have guarantee, its sounds like it could be either !

I have a v2000 and the dvd removes via a small screw under side ,remove and slid out the dvd rom

hard to understand you ,are you saying you reinstall window and it worked for a bit then started to do this ,or was it you reinstall windows and it has of yet to boot up correctly for you ,did you remove the windows cd from the cdrom yet !

kind of sounds like you have a bad power jack on the laptop ,where the cord plug in ,if you have to wiggle it to get it to work it likely need to be replaced or re-soldered on the motherboard ,my Daughters Compaq went at about 3 yrs old, the jack and poweradapter that is not the battery,it is also possible that the battery[not likely though ] and the power adapter are both bad after 3 yrs !

I just recently had this exact same issue. The same scenario happened. I was just curious to see if you had found a solution for this issue. I'm pretty much a broke college student working two jobs and can't afford to just go out and buy a new laptop. I really appreciate any assisstance on this matter. From what I was reading in the message board was that it might be the motherboard.

I'm working on a graphics engine using c++ and SDL, I created a DLL and I'm guessing that I did a poor job with the garbage collection. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction with the CD.

Marked as solved. It's worth something to note that only one post in this thread actually addressed my problem, while the rest were just nitpicking about minor issues that had no relevance.

sorry you feel that way ,but i fix computer all the time with the same symptoms as yours and i fix them with and combination "chkdsk /r" and with CCleaner,and malwarebytes ,hijackthis and combofix !all things are relevant, good luck .

PS ,still like to know the program youwere using and suspect caused the memory leak

you watched it get worse and worse ,you should have done something about it when it was still working good enough to run some programs , ,trojan to new [feb 09 ] this is May 09 that would make it old ,yesterday would be new, lol, both programs would have data in there updates to fix it by now .!

no there is no dvd drive ribbon cable on your laptop !
it is quite possible that your dvd's laser is getting to beak to burn a disk ,but that doesn't explain why the software dose not see it as a dvd burner .
I have a compaq v2000,[was my daughters for univeristy ]with a uj-840D dvd drive rarely useed for though for burning.

just checked my bios ,nothing in there for dma settings ,actually very little you can do in the bios on these machines

right click on the icon ,go properties and check the target /path

I obtained a copy of windows Vista and booted from the disc, where I was able to do a system restore. Thanks again.

Chkdisk will run if I force shut down (which I always have to) and after it is done "cleaning" my disc nothing changes

chkdsk doesn't "CLEAN " the disk, it repairs the disks sectors/file system and such !

what program do you suspect has/had the memory leak!
as for having virus/trojans on a computer with a antivius program ,I see them all the time ,computers with free Avast/Avg ect ect or with full purchase antivirus programs still get viruses

You put the cd DISK into the computer.
When you are advised to insert Ipod, you use a usb cable, from the Ipod to a USB port in your computer.

All Ipods come with a Setup Cd (includes ITunes, and Ipod Updater program ) when you purchase it from a shop.
I have 5 Ipods. Even my Creative ZEN came with a cd setup disk.

I live in Canada maybe thats the difference ,but i have a iPod nano 4 gig and a 1 gig iPod shuffle and neither came a cdrom ,how would it possibly fit in the small plastic case the player's comes in !
