The second annual Imperva Hacker Intelligence Initiative report, this one entitled [Monitoring Hacker Forums](http://www.imperva.com/docs/HII_Monitoring_Hacker_Forums_2012.pdf), is out and reveals that the threat surfaces being discussed by the hacker community are very different from those that businesses are spending money on defending against attack. ![dweb-hackers](/attachments/small/0/dweb-hackers.jpg "align-right") The Imperva research analysed the content of a number of online hacker communities, including many lesser known forums in order to get a more accurate snapshot of what those doing the hacking are actually discussing. By looking at a total of more than 400,000 different conversational threads, Imperva was able to determine that SQL injection and …

IT Friends, Let me start by saying I am not an IT professional. Our company recently changed to a cloud based environment. We are seeing substantial efficiency loss in the calculation times of our templates (mostly excel based). It's typically only seconds per calculation, but adds up throughout the day. My current desktop has the following set up: Windows 10, Office 16, Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4790 CPU @3.60 GHz 16.0GB RAM 64-bit operating system. I am being told that no cloud environment can match the processing speed for excel calculations of my desktop. I find that very hard to believe. Is …

Advert blocking software is thought to be used by something in the region of just five per cent of online users, or 150 million people of you prefer. It is, however, on the up; research conducted by Adobe and anti-adblocking campaigners PageFair suggests that ad blocking use rose by 70 per cent last year. Of the various options out there, Adblock Plus is one of the best known and most used. Which is why the company behind it, Eyeo GmbH, recently found itself on the sharp end of a court case in Germany seeking an injunction to prevent it from …

We also get this message when browing http://servername/backup/ I have ran the backup wizard to reset the …

Hello, My name is Ivo Petrov and I'm junior SEO specialist. I have optimised few websites in the past, but now we have to deal with much bigger project. We need to optimize a custom made UK business directory (like Thomson Local). I need advice from more experienced SEO's on how to do the advertising campaign. Here are my questions: Question 1: **Should we submit the site to many local directories?** I don't mean fly by night directories, but high quality onces? I heard that directory submission is not a good practice anymore but since these are most relevant websites we …

There is no doubt that SEO is an important part of the online marketing machine. Lest we forget, SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and only a fool would imagine that they could do business online without being indexed by the Gods of Search (Google, Bing, Yahoo!) However, there is more to marketing your business than making it search engine friendly; and blowing your entire marketing budget on SEO could prove a costly mistake. Traditionally, marketing your business (any business) has involved understanding who your customers are and how they think and feel. This is no different in the Internet …

First there was Panda, and then there was Penguin, but is there now Ghost as well? Webmasters will immediately know what I'm talking about as far as Penguin and Panda are concerned: updates to the Google search results ranking algorithm designed to make the search experience more relevant for end users by lowering the rank of 'low quality' sites such as content farms and those who use black-hat SEO techniques. Ghost, however, is not only rather spooky but also remains unconfirmed by Google itself. ![cce295ab242bb97981926f91d9f48fb7](/attachments/small/0/cce295ab242bb97981926f91d9f48fb7.jpg "align-right")While anything that makes search better for the user has to be a good thing …

Here’s the concept behind the smartpen: there are millions of pages of good old fashioned handwritten notes taken every day in business meetings and school lessons around the world. Unfortunately they remain trapped within the confines of the paper they are written upon. But what if you could easily share those notes, make them searchable and accessible by digitising them with a tap of the pen you write them with? That’s where the Echo smartpen comes in by digitally capturing what you write, and what you hear, and then ‘pencasting’ the data using the new Livescribe Connect software. To …

From college dropout to one of the world's youngest self-made billionaires, there is no doubting that Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has made quite an impression in his 28 years on this planet. But who is he really? You could go watch 'The Social Network' movie I guess, but all that does is tell you who he is through the eyes of a scriptwriter and the Hollywood machine. Better, you could trawl the Internet for biographies about and quotes from the man. The trouble with that approach is putting everything in some kind of context, coupled with filtering through …

That's the surprising consensus reached at a meeting of 30 CSOs representing some of the UK's leading enterprises held in London during the past week. This despite a poll at the bi-annual CSO Interchange event revealing that those same CSOs view social networking as the most over-hyped threat. When it came to the round table discussions on the subject of social networking, however, the gathered CSOs expressed what has been called a "strong preference" for companies to consider banning them all. Well, almost all, as LinkedIn gets an exception as most of the CSOs considered that acceptable. Could that possibly …

Hi All, Two questions really: 1. Is Windows 2003 still supported? (With all the fuss about XP support ending, I'm not sure if I missed it) 2. We have an old Windows 2003 Small Business Server as our domain controller, Exchange server and file server which is coming to the end of it's life. We also have a Hyper-V (not service but bare bones server) with an iSCSI connection to a NASbox for the VM disks. I'm thinking of creating an Exchange VM and Maybe getting another NASbox to use as a file server. But I'm not sure what to …

A new survey commissioned by IT solutions specialist GFI Software concludes that, for the vast majority of workers in the small to medium-sized business (SMB) sector at least, the conventional nine-to-five/five day working week is dead; and right there holding the smoking gun is email. The survey, independently conducted and blind, of 500 employees within the UK SMB workspace, looked at work-related email habits around usage both during the accepted working day and after hours. Although, having looked closely at the results of the survey, the truth of the matter is that the boundaries between work and home have become …

Hi all, and thanks in advance for any replies. Google Places - great for helping nearby searchers find your business. But would signing up have a negative impact on searches outside of your business' region? For example (fictional): a user in London searches for "IT support" and finds my IT support business based in London. Great. But if a user in Leeds searches for "IT support", would my company's ranking be worse than if I had not used Google Places at all? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Regards, _Rade

It's never easy calculating the true cost of inadequate security to business, not least as there are so many variables and such reticence when it comes to full disclosure for fear of brand damage. However, the latest [Information Security Breaches Survey](http://www.pwc.co.uk/audit-assurance/publications/uk-information-security-breaches-survey-results-2012.jhtml) (ISBS) from PwC/Infosecurity Europe has had a good bash at it, at least as far as the UK is concerned, and the answer is breathtakingly big: billions of pounds. And that was just last year! ![dweb-secreport](/attachments/small/0/dweb-secreport.jpg "align-right") According to the survey which investigated a total of 447 UK-based businesses, the number of large enterprises being hacked into is at …

According to security experts at data governance outfit Varonis, 2013 will be the year of the salami attack. On the plus side, they also predict that the world will not come to an end on December 21st 2012. It's not just salami that your business needs to worry about in terms of tech though. Varonis also points towards challenges such as the growing gap between people in a company who know how to find information and those who do not (the importance of intelligent internal search, retention and data archiving), the growing gap between how people use technology at work …

New research from ISACA suggests that US consumers with 'work-supplied' computing devices intend, on average, to spend nine hours shopping for gifts on them during the forthcoming holiday season. When it comes to the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) brigade, those who use personal mobile devices for work, that average goes up to 12 hours. ![dweb-shopper](/attachments/small/0/dweb-shopper.jpg "align-right") According to [ISACA’s 2012 IT Risk/Reward Barometer](http://www.isaca.org/Pages/2012-Risk-Reward-Barometer.aspx), those who mix their time between work-supplied computers and their own mobile devices will happily reveal email addresses (58%) and mother's maiden name (15%) in order to garner a 50% discount on a $100 item. We are making the switch to iMacs later this year but to improve employee productivity and enforce access policies we need to find a "business class" internet filter for our new iMacs. I can always configure our network to block the sites but this is primitive as it doesn't filter HTTPS sites. I'd like to keep the price of this to under the $150 range to allow for either a hardware purchase or a software purchase but not both. The only program I'm aware of is SafeEyes but that charges a yearly fee and we are really only looking to …
