Check with the sound recorder. Are you able to hear sound if so then try using Yahoo Messenger for Voice chat and see whether you can hear them speak or not.

Some spywares also do this. Try running Adaware or Spybot. Also disable all the startup programs using MS Config utility and see whether you still get the error message or not.

Definitely spyware and also try to run stinger. I was also having the same problem. I ran Stinger and found the Spybot Trojan running in the backgroud. Once I got rid of it. My system was quite stable

Download stinger.exe from Mcafee's website and remove/delete any viruses it finds. Disable all of the startup programs using the MS Config Utility. Also try using a spyware removal tool such as ADAWARE or SPYBOT

I ran Stinger.exe downloaded from Mcafee's website. It found a few trojans. Then I downloaded and ran Adaware which got rid of quite a bit of spywares. After that the system has been fairly stable

Seems like a SPYWARE problem. Download and run either Adaware or Spybot and see whether you still get the same error messages or not.
