Guys

After a bit of help please.

I have a toshiba laptop running windows 7 that wont let me log in. What I have done in the past with other laptops is to remove the hard drive, set the switches on it as a slave drive and install it into my old XP tower and then transfer the important files across to my other drive, then reinstall the hard drive back into the lap top where I can work on it without worrying about losing data

I have removed the hard drive from the laptop but it doesnt seem to have any switches on it to set it to slave. Is this now no longer required?. What arent I seeing

thanks

Hi Guys Gals and those not sure.

I am not sure if this is in the right thread but I am hoping u can help or direct me where I can help.

I have a friend running linux which had a virus hijack her hotmail account and started spamming her friends. She turned to hotmail for advice and they promptly shut down her account without any other correspondence or help

She wants to access or find her contacts list and has been told that there is a file in the system with all these contact on. Is this the case and where can I find it for her.

I hope you guys can help me as I have been chasing her unsucessfully for a while and I am hoping she will be suitably impressed by my programing prowess to overlook my other failings.

I am trying to help a friend whose system is running linux/firefox which is a new experience for me. I have been lazy all my life and used windows based systems. (As an engineer in my discipline as well I have a strong aversion to using anything that is non standard and try to go for the most common. Second mouse gets the cheese so to speak).

She appears to have gained a virus that has acessed her hotmail account which is sending messages off to people on her address book directing them to spam sites. She has asked me to look at fixing it.

My first challenge is working my way around the system which is completely different and confusing to anything I have used. (where is file manager???? FGS) and I cannot seem to do any of the things I would normally do.

Can anyone help me or make some suggestion on how to fix it.

The trouble is that if I uninstall it, I cannt reinstall it because I no longer have the disks.

Help

My Microsft word program has suddenly lost its spellchecker.

It gives the error message "Word cannot find the spelling file MSSpelll3.dll or Mssp232.dll".

I have done nothing to change it and restore has not worked. A search of the computer cannnot find the files.

The Woird program is a 2003 edition and I no longer have the disk or any details as I have moved several times. I am in the middle of writing job applications as my office closed last fortnight.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Thanks for the response, much appreciated. I am reading these links now. They donyt as you sayn answer the question directtly but some expl, oration may help find the solution.

My email is http, I only use hotmail due to its portability and resilience to changes in providers. I use Outlook express for ease of handling the mail, I can work off line and importantly because OE will automaticallky spellcheck mail before I send it.

OE automatically downloads the messages when I go online and I can work on them off line if required. now for some reason every now and then it just deletes the stored messages and starts downloading them from scratch again.,

thanks for the help and response and efort, much appreciated.

Hello

Probably a regular question but one I havent been able to work out. We are trying to connect two computers running XP using the network connection wizard. The main computer is Celeron 2.6 with 512 ram and running XP home and linked to the net via dial-up. The other computer is a Pentium 4 compaq running XP profressional. We linked them using a 3 metre catagory 6 cross over network cable. We then ran the netwrok setup wizard and followed all instructions. This didnt work so we have done it a few times and still no sucess.

Both computers show the connection under network connections with different IP addresses. The slave can see the IP address of both however the main one only shows its IP adress. We have disconnected the firewall. When the slave is shut down the main computer indicates it has lost the connection as the cable being disconnected

"My network places" do not show the other computer nor does the windows explorer tree.

Any ideas??

I suppose the question I am asking is noit wether he could but wether he should. Just cbecause you own something or can do something does that mean you should. If for example you leant a friend a mobile phone, does that give you the right to pick it up without her knowledge and go through the test messages stored on it. Is there a difference and why??.

Hi Guys

I would love some feed back on an ethical question I have just spent the last 5 hours discussing and would like to get the ideas of those in the industry and particularly those from and other countries as I’m from Oz and I know our standards are different here.

I have a friend in the US who I chat to by IM and who I discussed on a number of occasions a confidential relationship problem I was having with a third party friend known to both of us. My friend goes online at home through a server (which I was unaware of) and system set up her partner who is an IT professional.

Unbeknown to both if us, her partner recovered or recorded these conversations off the server and forwarded onto our third party friend creating problems that were not needed and making situations worse.

Note there was threat or risk to any other party or involvement of violence, drugs children or any other significant issues.

The partner’s position was that as he owned the server and it was in his basement, he was entitled to do what he wanted with it and what ever was on it belonged to him and that because the equipment existed for him to hack it, no one had the right to expect privacy and lastly that ethics do not matter with respect to issues like this.

I believed this was ethically wrong and that …

Greetings

I have an Celeron 2500 with 1 gig of ram. Have upto date virus protection and firewall (zone alarm)

I use dial up and my internet connection keeps dropping out whenever there gets to be high traffic through the modem. ie send/reciving onO utlook express while booting up opera or trying to download a file. This is quite regularand can be every 2 minutes.
Event viewer gives a security event occuring of type called "failure audit", catagory "policy change" and desctription as follows

"IPsec Services/ IPsec services failed to get the complete list of network interfaces on this machine. This can be a potential security hazard to the machine since some of the network interfacesmay not get protection as desired by the applied IpSec filters. Please run IPSecmoniter snap-in to further diagnose problem."

Have run ipsec monitor as per MS help and useless.

Aby ideas, have i downloaded a security update from Microsoft that is conflicting with my computer??

Otherwise, check the power cable. Sometimes, it happens that the 12V wire in the molex connector comes off, so the logic circuit stays powered but the motor doesnt spin. I know, its rare, but its happened to me once. To be perfectly sure, test the drive on another computer and see if it works there.

Again thanks,
Will check but as drive was definately working before installation of modem and its new computer, reluctant to take cover off. I was hoping for a software problem. Oh well break out the screwdriver

Is it just that particular music CD that isnt working, or do all of your CDs/DVDs not work? If it's just that particular CD, the disc itself could be bad.

Thanks for response: Tried all types of CDs and none worked appears to be hardware/software problem.

When I put music or data cd into the drive, computer doesnt respond. Have run windows trouble shooter without sucess and also removed and reistalled driver without sucess. Any suggestions, could the modem installation have caused this problem and how can we solve it.

I am wary of showing my ignorance but could someone please enlighten me as to the difference between the pentium "x" CPU and the celeron CPU as they both appear to be made by the same manufacturer. I have used computers a number of years but never have had the need, oppurtunity or sufficent curiosity to find this out but now would like to remedy this shortfall in my education.

Greetings

I purchase a program containing a digital repair manual for my car. (1983 - 2002. It came on two CDs and appears by the quality of presentation to be a genuine product. However when I run the setup program I get the following box:

Title Box in blue background : 16 Bit Windows Subsystem

description box: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'close' to terminate application.

The setup file is dated at 1993 but the subfolders are dated 3/2005. I thought that MS programs were backwardly compatible. I know my computer will run "lemmings", a program from back in the digital stone age (yet curiously more fun in some ways than later offerings).

Any ideas or suggestions on how to overcome this???

Hello and greetings

I have a computer using XP as the operating system and with SP 2 installed. I recently had a bad virus infection that thanks to the help from this website was able to remove and I am very grateful as the commercial virus removal programs couldnt help me. Unfortunately however since that time, I cannot get into the windows search window directly. If I try and start it from the start menu or from the left click on the start button, the computer simply sits there doing nothing, doesnt respond or anything. I can however still do a search by opening up the explorer window and then selecting search from the tool bar and it works fine.

Do I need to completely reinstall XP (a path I would rather not go down for the obvious reason) or is there some way to tweak or patch the sytem to repair this fault

Thank you

I havent had any problem with the virus since and I appreciate your help. There are still a few hangovers onthe computer I need to fix like the virus made my Word/Excel help display in such a small font that u have to peer very closly to see it but a fresh install will fix that.

One thing I cant see to fix is that my favourites in IE have dissappeared. Are they stored in a file anywhere. it was mainly junk but some where interesting I mean to revisit. I am taking your advice of moving to a diferent web browser so i will have the fun of collecting them againexcept my favourites

Greetings
I own a 2400 celeron computer with 256 k ram and 80 gig hard disk. I use zone alarm, avg and adaware and keep them updated and religiously keep them active. I seem to however have picked up a virus/s which has slipped in under the wire.
AVG can recognise the virus however cant seem to remove the virus's, sometimes it says it does by deletting the file but the virus reappears. The actual virus's are as follows
c:\documents and settings\user\local settings\temp\1.exe: Trojan horse startpage.mf
and anotehr one

c:\documemts and settings\local settings\temporary internet files
pro_internet (1).exe

I have used trojan hunter without success. it would not even see the viruse was present and undertaken all the cleaning procedures given in thread PC Cleaning Procedures & Detection Tools including deletion of the files and also used
http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php

and used the preliminary cleanup for hijack this and subsequent log is given below

Can you make any suggestions

Greetings

I have a celeron 1800hz with 256k of ram running xp with service pack 2 installed. This is a shared computer with two other users (my two sons) as well as myself

I have AVG antivirus, zone alarm for firewall and regularly run ad-aware for spy ware etc. All these are up to date and installed and running. I am always on top of this as my sons do go to sites that may contain virus's or similar

There are two problems
a) Every time I select Internet explorer off the menu, the home web page is a search web page I havent set. I change home page in internet options to my prefered home page and also edit the registry to remove any mention of this feral search bar page but the next time I boot up and then select internet explorer it has reverted back to the search bar page.

b) The other problem is that if you select a link to a page takes a bit longer to open, the page being loaded is redirected to a porn site page and once that happens, even if you go back out of that site, every time u select the link to your intended site this porn site comes up instead.

I've run all the anti-virus and adware programs without finding any trojans, virus's or explanations for this problem.

Can anyone have any suggestions. Thanks also for your help

Hi
I have a problem with my (optical) mouse in that it freezes during use of my computer. Itially it will be jerky in operation and if you try and move the mouse too fast or simply during careful use ithe mouse cursor will freeze. It can be "released" a couple of times by "ALT TABiing? or pushing the windows keyboard button twice but soon freezes for good.Ocassionally it freezes the whole computer. Often when your reboot up the computer after loosing the mouse, the mouse cursor is frozen and it takes 2 or 3 reboots to get a working mouse.
This also happens in safe mode and event viewer does not log any problem occurring when the nouse freezes. To date I have tried
a) Removal of the nouse driver and allowing the mnouse driver to be reinstalled.
b) Using MSconfig to remove sequentially remove parts of the startup procedure
c) Reducing hardware acceleration to zero
d) decreasing the number of colours displayed by the monitor and the quality of the display
e) updated my firewall, antivirus and adaware reference files and ran scans on antivirus and ad-aware.

All these efforts have failed to correct the problem and if anything things are getting worse. Any suggestions please. I am using a celeron 1700 computer with 256 meg of ram with XP operating system and update 2 installed. I use zonealarm for firewall, ad-aware for spyware, and AVG anti-virus

Hm......

After looking at this from a few angles , I think the two problems are very much related (somehow I came to this wonderful conclusion).

Your error message seems to be stemming from the Indexing system that was in both Windows XP and 2000. This system was intended to make hard drive searches faster, but not all systems reacted to it the way Microsoft had intended. Seems your computer was one of those lucky machines.

I will say that you can safely remove the Indexing Service and see if that helps. If you decide to go that route:

As always, if that doesn't seem to work out for you, you can always put the Indexing Service back where it was:

Either way, I think that might be the problem with the mouse sticking up on you. If it isn't that, then it may be some application that is running in the background using too many of the same resources your peripherals are trying to use. Take a peek for applications that are either being resource hogs or are just plain useless and end those suckers.

Hope it all helps :cheesy:

I went to the indexing service but found it had not been installed so i installed it and then uninstalled it. There was no change to the computer at all. The mouse is still catching or freezing.

Any other suggestions?

kermie 0 Junior Poster in Training

Thanks for your help'
I'm aware of the problem with memory hogs, its a pet hate of mine those programs that load up and just sit in memory doing nothing. One of the first things I tried was calling up the windows task manager, processes and end process every image name under user names that I could get rid of. That didnt seem to work but thanks for response and I will try turing off the indexing service

I have a 2800 celeron computer running windows XP with SP2 installed and 256 rams.

I have a problkem in that my mouse (optical) keeps either freezing the computer or simply stops responding. If you move the mouse slowly it is Ok but it then starts to "stick" indentically to how my old mouse with the ball used to stick when the internal rollers got dirty. If U respond the same way as we used to in making wide sweeping motions with the mouse, the computer freezes. If U leave it alone it sometimes comes back after a brief pause (1-2 seconds) or else if U alt tab to another application sometimes it also unfreezes the mouse. Sometimes just out of the blue the pointer will be lost or simply freeze, or the whole computer will freeze including the keyboard.
I have checked event viewer and it fails to given any notification or discription of what happened. However in application there is a lot of messages as follows although they do not coincide with the mouse freezing
Product:Windows Operating System

Component:Application Event Log
Symbolic Name:MSG_CI_SERVICE_TOO_MANY_BLOCKS
Message:The content index filter for file "%1" generated content data more than %2 times the file's size

An update as follows usaing your numbering system

1) Correct XP machine has one network card installed not connected to the internet plus a second card (modem) used to access internet, receive voice/fax when Im not on-line

2) Ran "compmgmt.msc" but could not find computer management control panel, Users and Groups folder, and so made a new user via the control panel, create new user option
3) Made a folder on c: (and D: is not a cd-rom) called it shareWin31and then selected properties, options, sharing and slected all tick boxes under network sharing and security. For some reason this folder keeps resetting to read only. Logged out of my main user into new account and confirmed that it was accessible

I only have a dial-up connection so when downloading large files, I leave the computer downloading overnight, thus leaving my phone free during the day.

However with my current computer the computer runs for a while and then simply locks up. I come out in the morning and the screen is frozen and unresponsive to the keyboard. I have to reboot up the computer using the reboot button. Doing an all file search shows that at some time previously the computer stopped, for example last night I left the computer running and downloading at 11 pm and the search shows it stopped at approximately 4 am the next morning. On the administrtive tools event viewer fails to show any event occuring at this time for either system, or shows no fault in the system or application.

I have removed all power saving settings, removed the screen saver and removed all possible user TSR programs using task manager and still this happens. Any suggestions or explantions welcome

Thanks for the prompt reply.

I am only a home user who happens to have this old 386 given to me from my previous employer as it was obsolete. Thus further growth of my system is not a probable outcome and I was hoping to just be able to use a crossover cable to minimise costs as its not really worth spending much money on it.

The 386 already has a network card on it as it was part of a LAN (for email only I seem to remember) at my previous employer and the socket connection fits the standard cable connector. It also has a modem card as well but a fairly old and slow one. I dont have any disks for the network card on the 386 but the software has not been changed since I was given the unit so it probably has some legacy software on it but I cant check at the moment for winsock. My new celeron unit came fitted with a network card and a seperate modem card which I use to access the internet.

I am also just a beginner in learing about networking and other computer mechanicals so please be gentle and accept my apologies if I do not understand right away and the simple the instructions are the better. Greetings

I have a 3 mointh old computer system (celeron 2600) running XP and fitted with a network card. I also have a 386 computer with 1 MB extended memory and running windows 3.1 for workgroups also fitted with a network card and a modem.
I used to use the 386 as a fax machine to recieve faxes and send small text faxes however I have now loaned the monitor to a friend but would like to network the two computers together so that I can leave the old 386 machine running all the time to accept faxes etc rather than piling up the running time on the new unit.
I would then envisage being able to transfer files to the old unit from my new computer for example scanned images etc, and conversly retrieve faxes from the old computer to the new unit.
Can anyone tell me wether this is possible and how I would go about this.

Thankyou.

Greetings,

M computer has windows XP as the operating system, AVG antivirus and Zonealarm firewall. It is only 3 months old.

I keep getting an error message from AVG that a trojan virus has been discovered in a restore file and to do a full scan of the sytem with AVG. However AVG doesnt recognise/identify these trojans in the full scan.
The file is specified as being located in a folder/directory called "system volume information" under the root directory (c:\system volume information) but I cant find this directory through search, the dos prompt or windows explorer so I cant just delete this file. Any ideas or suggestions welcome
:)
Steven

Umm does turning of the power at the wall on a computer novices/idiots machine countknowing that he will never check there.

Power is relative depending upon where you are and what U do. 25 years ago the worlds weathiest person or corporation didnt have acess to the amount of information and knowledge that anyone with a pc and a internet connection can have now.

In the middle ages, only the very intelligent could do long division.

It is the futre that will judge, not ourselves so keep hoping they dont invent time machines

Great site guys and Gals

Can see some serious complaining from wife as I really get into findiong some of the answers to life and computers that I have been seeking.

A suggestioin if I may, how about including a section for techie confessionals, where we can ownm up to some of our siller mistakes both for the entertainment of our fellow techies and to get them off our chest speak. There also may be some educational value

I have one that happened to me this weekend, I spent best part of a full night trying to get the sound to work on my computer after I had just installed a tuner card. When installed sound wouldnt work on the sound card, removed software, problem still existed, when installed software, problem was patchy, when recording off tv sometimes sound would work and sometimes didnt. Removed and realoaded all my drivers, checked connections and did everything I could and of course getting sleepier and sleepier and more and more frustrated.

Towards end of night found by accident a second wire in amongst all the other jumble of wires, traced one end to the second speaker headphone socket on the bass box for the speakers and the other end to my speaker hesadset under the desk. Removed it and problem gone. I could say in my defense that I rarely use the head phhones and also say that I never use this socket if I ever do. I …

Hello

I just unstalled a tv tuner card to my AMD 1800 computer running xp. Loaded up and workjing but now my Kazzalite will not connect, just swits there sayinf "connecting'.
I have used Kazzalite for several months with out any problems and wonder if ths may be coincidental. Ive remove the soft ware for the new card, removed tKazzalite totally and reisntalled, remnoivd it and installed differetn versions all without any luck. I also tried to change the port used by Kazzalite as the help suggests however I am unsure about this and it didnt seem to do any good. Onl;y thing left isto physically remove the car which I am loathe to do firstlyu because Ive paid for it and 2 because logic says it cant be involved with the internet connection.

Any ideas appreciated.

Arrrrrgghhhhh!!!!!
spoke too soon.

systemjust dropped out again although took longer time with the changes monte suggested.

Have been told that iot could be "pool damage" by a freidn who sent me this piece of microgarble:
Pool damage is caused when a kernel-mode component writes to memory outside of its allocated pool area. By writing to memory beyond the boundary of its allocated area, it is likely that another area of allocated memory, possibly owned by another component, is overwritten. This damage can cause problems such as blue screens in completely unrelated areas of code. A kernel-mode component reading beyond its allocated area can also cause problem.

Any further suggestions on how to cure this.

thanks
