You say the program tries to install when you boot the machine?
You need to check that the Startup does not have a link to this program:
Click Start -> All Programs -> Startup if the program is listed here then remove it, just right click on it and choose Delete.
If the program is not there then click Start and click Run a window pops up; type msconfig. A new window pops up. Go to the last tab (Startup) and make sure that the program you are trying to get rid of is not listed here - if it is then untick it and clock OK you are tehn asked if you want to restart, choose yes or restart now (what ever it is).
Hopefully this will work.
Of course there is another way of getting rid of programs after they have lost files, just reinstall the program, once installed then go to Control Panel and choose to uninstall it - this method usually works - unless the application is spyware or similar unwanted type of application.
To get Hijackthis follow this link:

Hi.
From the laptop; can you ping the router?
I'm not sure if I understood fully what you said, did you say that the laptop will connect to the router and appear to be fine but can not connect to the internet?
If the laptop does appear to connect to the router then I suggest you try the following (no particular order - just some thing to try):
Ping the router
Ping the desktop (when both are connected to the router)
Try using the desktop to ping the laptop
(if all of the above work then try pinging google)
If you can ping the router, and if you can ping the desktop try trace routing:
in a DOS window/command prompt typ
tracert xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
Replace the xxxs' with the IP addess of your desktop - see what message you get.
If this works try trace route to google or the BBC or something again look for messages it may help identify were the connection is failing.
The problem appears to be you laptop more than anything else so check the routers config/setup make sure you have not enambled mac eddress filtering or something like that - if so then you'll need to add the MAC address of the laptop to your router (I think this is unlikely as you said you tried 2 routers)
I think the problem may lie with Windows, if you have XP then for now …
Hi people, I am just including a link to a great resource for using Linux to create real time visual effects.
Use EffecTV and Simple DirectMedia Layer (SDL) to create your own real-time visual effects on live video. Learn how to integrate geometric primitives, bitmap image loading, and simple motion tracking to create your own games, leading-edge user interfaces, or immersive environments. Explore the EffecTV and SDL architectures, and learn how to harness the power of open source video processing on Linux®.
Real-time video effects processing is becoming more common throughout major sporting events. NASCAR, the NFL, professional hockey, and other sports apply real-time video effects, such as the colored first-down line in football, based on precise geospatial data. Advanced user interfaces and immersive environments employ specialized input hardware to specify coordinates in a 3-D world with six degrees of freedom. These technologies all require investment in expensive hardware and custom data acquisition packages. You can build your own system for real-time video effects processing based on simple motion tracking and existing open source software.
EffecTV is a fantastic application written by Fukuchi Kentaro that gives you access to the raw pixel data from a video capture device. You can use its existing open source framework to modify more than two dozen effects, or add your own. With the integration of the SDL libraries, the EffecTV framework makes it easy to add your own effects with more abstracted interfaces, making them easier to create and integrate with existing code.

Thanks for the tip.
I have scanned the web for tooltips etc, but the one draw back seems to be that I need to add 'onmouseover' tags to each and every instance.
I already have a lot of content, and providing onmouseover tags would be far more work than I want to do (LAZY...)
What I want to do is create a list of keywords, which I can add to over time, these keywords will have descriptions, and possibly a link to a knowledgebase, but the link is not important, and to be honest I might not have the knowledgebase if the tooltips work well.
When a page is called, I want something (I am guessing a php script) to scan the document find any words that match my 'array' of keywords and replace them dynamically so that the php script adds the onmouseover tag so that descriptions etc for words I have added to the array can be displayed as a tool tip.
Any more ideas, or if your idea will do this, could you give me a couple more nudges in the right direction.
Thanks

Hey there.
First of all I need to explain what it is that I am looking for.
But, I should like to take the opportunity to appologise if I have posted a question that someone else may have asked, but as I don't know what you call it, I don't know what to search on. (oh, and I have a feeling it maybe a php question rather than a html question, but not sure, so please forgive if this is in the wrong forum...)
So what am I looking for?
You may have noticed when you go to some web pages there is text that is underlined, these are usually keywords either relating to products or companies, when you roll your mouse over them a small box appears and a description or advert is displayed.
I want to try to use this 'technology' or scripting, what ever you might class it as, so that I can supply context based information, not adverts, I am not asking you to tell me how to bug people with more adverts, I want to be able to create my own list of words for which I can provide links to other related topics for example throughout my own site.
I am guessing that it is probably php rather than html based, but not sure, and I am guessing that it must be dynamic in that all I need to do is call it in the header of each …

First of all, what errors if any are you getting when you try to access My Computer or Control Panel?
You may want to try the System File Checker it may correct your problem.

Type SFC /SCANNOW
SFC may ask for you to insert the Windows CD
Are you getting any errors when you try to use your cable service?

This case often gets good reviews in mags and is not too badly priced for the quality:
Coolermaster Centurion 5 they are currently £38.89 Including VAT at 17.5% at:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Coolermaster_Cases_126.html
I know thats not cheap but going by what I have read about it, it is a good quality case, and very good value for the money.
You can get REALLY cheap cases from here:
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=6473474788&action=c2hvd3N1YmNhdGVnb3J5X3NlYXJjaA==&cat_uid=23&stid=2
I have bought a few of them they are pretty cheap but the quality is good enough to survive the average house, the fact that your talking about a school may rule a lot of the really cheap cases out as they would probably not last too long with a couple of hundred kids poking at it. :D
But ebuyer.co.uk is definately worth looking at if your in the UK, I think they have an american site also.

I use VNC to connect to Windows and Linux desktops from Windows and Linux Desktops all the time.
You will need to have VNC installed at both ends, VNC is free and you can get it from here:
http://www.realvnc.com/download.html
You need to run VNC (app mode) before you go out, and you should set a password.
then from the remote end open VNCviewer and type the IP address (this is obviously not going to work to well if you have a dynamic IP address.)
VNC is a little slow over the internet, but it does the job just fine, like i said, I use it all the time, and I connect to machines that are behind firewalls, routers, DSL modems, they all work just fine.

Ok, I'll have another look around. Thanks for your help....Philip
If you just want to remove something from the Add/Remove Programs List:
click Start
click run
type regedit
You need to go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
->SOFTWARE
->Microsoft
->Windows
->CurrentVersion
->Uninstall
This is where the list of items that appear in your Add/Remove Programs list resides.
Most of them go by name, and you can just delete the whole folder for the program you do not want to appear in the list.
Occasionally they have a load of runnish instead of the name liek this:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{0BEDBD4E-2D34-47B5-9973-57E62B29307C}
These are usually MS or system wide settings.
BUT clicking on each one individually should provide you with enough information to help you find this program that you want to remove from the list.
Making changes to this list does not effect the use of program, this is only useful if you have removed a program, but it has left an entry in the Add/Remove Programs list.
Hope that Helps

I use Firefox for 2 main reasons:
1: A friend recommended it to me
2: I Like tabbed browsing.
lets start with 2 first of all.
Tabbed browsing is awsome, I can have loads of sites open at one time, but only take the place of one program on my task bar or start bar.
But tabbed browsing is available with nearly all other browsers excluding IE.
So Why choose Firefox instead of Mozilla/Opera/etc..
Answer: = 1: A friend recommended it.
I used Mozilla in Fedora Core 2, and I used IE in Windows. I went to a friends house and he was using Firefox, he was getting no pop-ups and no spyware problems.
I could have installed Mozilla, but Firefox was growing at the time, people had only just started sticking those little Firefox logo's all over their sites and my friend recommended it.
As soon as I returned home I downloaded and installed Firefox on both my Windows and my Linux machines.
I have used Firefox ever since, and I am very happy with it.
I have seen some sites that Firefox can't display correctly, usually sites that have been created with Frontpage or Word or some other MS product that does not follow the rest of the worlds HTML styles/rules. In this case I need to use IE. But then I have seen other sites (including one of my own) that will not display/function correctly …
Looking at the current setup, I take my first comment back, the sig looks ok with a background.
I like the current look* as the post is the 'odd' bit out, which kinda makes the post draw your attention.

*Just in case it changes again the current look is the post title and the posters signature are in boxes with cscgal's new fancy background, the post is on a simple grey background.
As for IPB, I don't think I have ever used a site (that I can remember) that actually uses IPB...
Not sure if only rubbish site choose IPB?? (Only joking not looking for a flame war..)
Well this is just an update, I recently installed and tested IPB on a test site I was working on the other day - wow - very impressive, I have not seen vBullitin's admin features etc, but IPB looks very powerful.
Unfortunately for the test site, the people that made the decisions where not happy with a couple of small features, so they opted for another product that was been demonstrated by a 3rd party - I think they went for phpBB.
For me, IPB has just shot up in my opinion, it is very powerful and once you get used to the IPB way of doing things, it is a very nice forum for the admin (granted we had 6 users and maybe 30 posts - perhaps its a little different with 000's of users and posts?)

Very Nice.
I thought I was going nuts a minute ago when my posts had different signature 'looks'
I agree with Scribbller about making the signature stand out, it would be a shame to take the focus away from the posts.
But the new background is pretty good and looks nice as background for the post titles.

And for Steveneven who posted to this thread while I was writing this, as I was a unix programmer way back when, I´ll have to support him in his enthusiasm for linux. You can do more for less with unix and its derivatives than any other O/S ever written. But I, like most, use Windows still because more of us use it. And that logic has been around for a long time...
I really like Linux, I have also used and like Solaris, but thats about the extent of my Unix experience.

I prefer Linux, I use it for about 70% of my computing needs, but I do still have and use Windows XP also.

Windows XP has been cracked from day one, you could get away with using less than legal copies of Win XP, they blocked some keys with SP1 and some more with SP2, but there are still loads that work.
The next big problem your going to have if you go down this route is the WGA or Windows Genuine Advantage.
Last month Microsoft said from the middle of 2005 customers will need to verify that their copies of Windows are genuine before downloading updates and add-on tools, through a programme, called Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA). WGA uses a validation tool to check whether a particular version of Windows is genuine, which is already running on the Microsoft site.

- what version of Windows are the machines running?
- are the machines getting their IP addressing info from the router via DHCP, or are you entring that info on each machine manually?
- did you assign a unique computer name to each machine and assign them to the same workgroup?...........

What OS(s) are you using?
Perhaps if you can let me know this I may be able to offer some tips etc.
I will try to check daniweb again later in the day.
One pretty simple tip if you have Windows XP.
Open My computer and choose network places from the left hand menu.
Then from the left hand menu again, choose the option to Setup a Home or Small Office network
This is a very simple windows style wizzard that you pretty much just need to keep clicking Next through it.
perform this on both machines.
I can offer more detail on any of the steps in the wizzard if you need some advice, but I will not go into it here incase you are using Mac OS or Linux or other.

Hi Michelle.
Also I remember someone telling me that you can make sure your competition doesn't show up in option #1.
How do you do that?
Here's a link that will tell you how to do this:
https://www.google.com/adsense/urlfilter
Unfortunately you need to know who your competition is before you can block them, but you can start with the web address's of your biggest competitors and add to the list as you get to know who else is competing for the same business.
Select AdSense for search to provide web and (optionally) site search to your users. Results pages are monetized with targeted Google ads.
Is the 2nd one just a search bar & when someone uses it & then clicks on a site from that search you get paid?
From the google page:
https://www.google.com/support/adsense/bin/answer.py?answer=9879&topic=144
AdSense for search is for publishers who wish to provide web search for their users, directly from any web page. AdSense for search results pages use Google's search to provide relevant results, and the search results pages are customizable to fit with your site's theme. In addition, results pages are monetized with Google ads that are targeted to the user's query - providing useful information for the user, and a new revenue stream for publishers.
This is how I understand this works:
Adsense: Random slected keywords are used to generate adds.
Adsense Search: The adds that are generated are based on the search terms used.
The advantage …
yea, i meant 1Mb, what is the difference between 1MB and 1Mb...Because I know there is a diff between 1KB and 1Kb, how do you calculate the difference?
1b = 1 bit e.g. a 1 or a 0
1B = 8 bits e.g. 1101 1011
1Kb = 1024 bits
1KB = 1024 Bytes
The difference is that a byte is 8 bits
1Mb = 1024Kbits
1MB = 1024KBytes
In general a B is 8 times greater than a b
Data storage is nearly always measured in Bytes
Data transfer is nearly always measured in bits
Hope that lot makes sense :D

Your connection is: 577 Kbps (about 0.6 Mbps)
You downloaded at: 70 kB/sI wish I could download 1MB/sec. that would be sweet.
1MB/s I wish I could hit that speed as well.
Or do you mean 1Mb/s
A 1MB/s connection is about the equivilent of an 8Mb/s connection.
I am about to start a different thread on Connection speed/price, to see what other people pay (in different parts of the world) for similar connection speeds.

A stab in the dark...
I only really use Fedora and very occasionally Ubuntu.
When you first install Fedora, and then setup Samba you will not be able to connect to any Windows machines, and the Windows machines, will either not be able to connect to the Fedora machines OR the Windows machines just won't see the Fedora machines.
The problem is (in Fedora) that you need to trust your Network card in the Fedora machines so that they are allowed to communicate with your network.
I have only seen SuSE in the Live CD format, and I don't have one to hand so not sure if this is something similar in SuSE.
In Fedora you would click Applications, System Settings, Security
Towards the bottom of that window you would see an option for Trusted Devices in the case of Fedora you would need to tick which ever interface connects to you local network - normally eth0
Any devices that aren't ticked sit behind a firewall and will block the Samba requests.
As I don't know if there is anything similar in SuSE, this is just a stab in the dark, another option would be (as long as your on a network with a Firewall protecting your internet connection) to find the setting in SuSE to disable the firewall completely if you can't identify anyway of trusting your network devices.
Just a suggestion - might at least point you in the …

phpbb is nice but is not too easy to use with my CMS so I have settled for the CMS's product called newbb which I believe is their version of phpbb, but no where near as good, and not a touch on VB.

OK Another UPDATE...
I decided to call a friend that runs Windows 2k and ask if he could test the site, he could test, and EVERYTHING worked fine...
SO I asked him to look at the site with his XP machine(with SP2) so I could show him what the prob was and guess what - it WORKED???
SO Now I am confused...
Ok so only one person complained about the problem (as far as I know) but as I also had the problem I took it to be a problem with XP+SP2.
The problem is obviously not with my site as I guess most people that look at the site either don't notice that something is not working, OR it works fine for them.
I guess I am in the minority of effected users.
Luckily I mainly use Fedora Core and Firefox is my browser of choice, and the site is aimed at Linux users, so I think I will spend no more time on this problem.
Thankyou

PS: the odd thing is, comparing our version information from the Help>About Internet Explorer, we both appear to have the same versions of IE with the same updates, yet one machine works and the other doesn't...
An update; there has been a post from an unregistered visitor that has informed me that the site DOES work on a Windows XP install with IE6 and NO Service Packs.
I am now a little more confused, does SP2 have an issue with the site, or does the site dislike SP2?
Steveneven
I have 2 sites, one is mainly just for testing, unfortunately its the live site that has the problem .. grrr.
Ok in the forums on the respective sites there are menus that appear when you run the mouse over them, these menu's are ONLY in the forums.
Under Firefox/Opera/Mozilla/Epiphany (what ever its called) these menu's work fine.
In IE the menus do not pop up.
I have IE 6, on winXP with Service Pack 2. (each of the users that have mentioned the problem are in the same boat here - so one test I have not had the opportunity to try is does this effect SP1 users or users of earlier IE versions?)
I think the problem relates to the way that IE deals with .png images, BUT I am not sure, as the exact same forum is used at my test site and the menu's work fine at this site.
The site admin at the failing site emailed me to let me know that the menu's do work if you use an anonymizer style service. Which is even more confusing.
Service:

I don't mind chopping and changing code, but I don't know what to change as the problem only seems to effect IE users visting one site.
One more point is that IE users make up just under 50% of traffic, its enough for me to want to figure it out, but not enough for …

I am not sure if this is a typical response, i.e. try to just get the customer to buy whole computer... Or if this a limit in your BIOS, Windows ME is not limited to 60Gb HDD's.
I don't know what to recommend, they may be telling you a fact based on your BIOS (which I obviously don't know anything about)
You processor - celeron 800, kit for that would be fairly cheap now from somewhere like Ebay. The case looks fairly average, I would guess you could get away with adding a standard board to that case without too much problem, and just in case, see a board you like get the tape measure out to get size of your board, and then email the seller and ask them the size of the board they are selling.
Ultimately I would guess that it is just a fairly standard Compaq response, one they used when they where selling the machines - they just want you to buy a new one...
I think I would buy the …
Not hard at all
Open the case, look for the existing RAM module (RAM slots are usually in groups of 2-4, and usually towards the top of the mobo, or at least they are usually above half way.)
place your new stick in the closest slot to the existing RAM
RAM can only go in one way, if you look at the new stick, and look at the board, you should notice a notch not quite in the middle.
push the RAM securing tabs out, and gently push the RAM stick into the slot (if you have the RAM the right way around - indicated by the notch) it should go in without too much trouble, then press down a little hard until the RAM securing tabs click into place (they will lock the RAM in place for you)
Put the case or case side back on, and you should be done, turn the computer on and enjoy the improvment in speed!
It is really easy, nothing to it, you can't even get the RAM in the wrong way because of the notch - and when I said push gently - well don't be worried about pressing hard, as long as the notch is in the right place, and you don't just fly in there, everything should be fine.

Also have you tried running defrag from the run command?
Start
Run
defrag /f
•
A volume must have at least 15% free space for defrag to completely and adequately defragment it. Defrag uses this space as a sorting area for file fragments. If a volume has less than 15% free space, defrag will only partially defragment it. To increase the free space on a volume, delete unneeded files or move them to another disk.
•
You cannot defragment volumes that the file system has marked as dirty, which indicates possible corruption. You must run chkdsk on a dirty volume before you can defragment it. You can determine if a volume is dirty by using the fsutil dirty query command.
