I used google as you may suspect. Contributions would be great but this reads like a press release or advertisement and not an editorial. Maybe there needs to be a different system for press releases so they don't get called out like this.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Looks like a rehash of https://www.banklesstimes.com/2018/06/18/these-industries-will-be-changed-by-dapps/
Also reads as advertisement or press release rather than a tutorial.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

So you're telling me Sam Web Studio fails at this?

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

As to the cookies your seasoned users know what to do about that. Maybe not super cookies but private browsing works well along with a VPN to cover this. Also I have used the TAILS OS to test out just how anonymous I can be. TAILS is about as extreme as I've gone in such tests.

I wonder about D_1 as they have been very quiet. Most likely the old drop any question about their site as SEO and leave.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

I had to turn off an ad blocker and now I see more pages. So back to the top about the topic question how to market a loan website.

Are they marketing their site for sale or to the consumers?

Also the folk I know always check out these sites (bankrate or similar) then go direct to the seller to see if the deal is the same or better.
Why? "Cut out the middleman." That can really upset those that run such sites.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

I looked at a few pages and didn't find one like https://www.bankrate.com/loans/personal-loans/rates/ there.
Maybe they need to move that sort of page to be prominent if that's who they are marketing to.

As to Facebook, as they are not selling loans, I still don't get why they wrote tricky but maybe they don't know who they are marketing to yet.
Some sites like this are looking to sell their site, others are looking to get folk to use their site but where is the revenue to make the site bring home the bacon or tofu?

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

I guess I should write it's worth is low since it's not what I thought it was. You noted it's not collecting visitor data so no added value to the site for selling the site to others. Maybe it's just worth what you can get for the name alone and not an issue at all as to facebook and more.

Cobbling together something you can get from a directory listing in your city, state, province or country doesn't really add value. You have to add something of value. Either in data collection about your visitors (like Facebook) or about the banks in this case such as bankrate com does.

I'm going to write that as it stands, this is a site of pretty low value if put up for sale.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

That has me change my view. The site doesn't have much value over say a Wikipedia page of banks in that country. They really need to pivot towards something of more value. Maybe something like Bankrate com or such.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

You're right, they need both (strategist and attorney.) Here the fines for a badly done loan are so high that you can't go without your legal department.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

The loan business in the USA has a lot of laws and regulation and since their site is not USA I can't comment about what I read at their site but it seemed short on the disclaimer work.

But hey, the site looks pretty polished so the other side of my brain makes me think it's just spam.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

I've seen startups without a digital strategist and the CEO or other C suite make a lot of "bold moves." Here they seem to be thinking Facebook is tricky. If so, they need that position or at least a wordsmith and lawyer to be sure what they have there makes sense and is legal.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

I see businesses post their product on Facebook all the time. Why would you call this tricky?

Also, you mention strategy. Don't you have a strategist on your team? If not, it's time to get one on board.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

That's what I would do. Change the install order and try again. ALSO, read this recent back and forth about ASSOC and FTYPE:
https://www.daniweb.com/programming/software-development/threads/520005/python-problem-with-installed-packages

Very interesting findings (at least to me and others.) Maybe the community version of Visual Studio may be easier?

My workaday laptop is now an Acer Predator which while being very nice and all started to boot up with Windows Sticky Keys enabled. Now being a long time Windows user I went to the usual control panel, turned it off but it turned back on if the machine was rebooted or you logged out and back in.

The usual Google research was done, registry changes made and still it persisted. As all you needed to do was tap the shift key a few times to turn it off I left it as it was until I had more free time to look into it.

A deeper dive into the machine was done with AUTORUNS which found an odd thing I tossed but still it enabled after login.

So what if it's something to do with this model laptop? A new google found the answer: https://www.google.com/search?q=acer+predator+sticky+keys&gl=US

Aha, Acer and others added a Sticky Keys on/off to their system so there was more than one place this can be controlled which reminds me of the more than one boss stories.

Fix: Press the Acer Predator Sense button till it turns red, then tap button 1. It's fixed and I share this here so others might not spend as much time hunting it down.

Now I'm spitballing here but I've seen the command shell FORGET environment variables when you launch by association. I'm sure there is a longer discussion on that somewhere but it is a Windows thing.

Now this is covered at https://docs.python.org/2/using/windows.html and I had to read it five times to get it. Try the assoc and ftype commands at https://docs.python.org/2/using/windows.html#executing-scripts but the way Windows revs up the python and pythonw.exe and how paths are determined is my take on why this is.

Reverend Jim commented: Genius. +15
rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

To me this sounds like Python environment and path issues. We chatted about some of this and you revealed the drive letter D so my bet is that Python environment variables are what's in play. I am a little under the gun on a non-Python issue so I won't get to duplicate this till a few days.

Off topic but why I can duplicate this is that one of my test laptops is now clean and ready to do this. But I'm supposed to have my nose to the grindstone and not here. So I'll cheat a little and comment but have to delay on duplicating this here for a few days.

Welcome to DaniWeb. I wonder if you clicked the submission button too soon and forgot to add a question such as:

Why do I get the error "failed to open stream"?

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

I have a follow up question for Ayush_5. Beyond the issue raised by JamesCherrill are you looking for dark web listings as well? Those are the part of the Internet not accessible by traditional web search engines also known as deep web.

Maybe you could share what you are trying to really do. Maybe you want to make your own index of all sites but to do so would have you building a small warehouse for the server farm to do the search of your databases. That's the only way to drive down the delay you mentioned up top.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Loops can use the do, for, while constructs and your exit can be done in many ways. Why I note that is, the homework stating "Using loops" gave you no less than three or all loop mechanisms offered by C#. So that can't be what's stopping you here.

Supply your code so far and tell which line or function is stopping you.

A wise repairman once shared this nugget with me. Can't find a name to give credit to.

When unsure what part to replace, start with the cheapest part first.

I have used this advice many times over the years. As I do a lot of computer work, I always do the free stuff first then move to the cheapest part and so on. Some may fault this method. I don't.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Hmm, this reminds me of our old friend DEFINE. I wonder if Python does that. Off to check that out. It won't obviate a need to change from getargs totally but here I go looking for that.

So yes, Python can def() something so it could shorten your getargs.getargs() down to just what you call your function in the def() code.

To me this is a different question than at top so my thought here is that Python is treating your getargs import as an object and what's inside are members or such so this seems to be exactly what should happen. Now us old foggies that like terse stuff may just have to name this getargs to something short if keystrokes are what we want to reduce.

So if the grep is the goal one could cheat and write:
from getargs import * # from include import getargs
But hey, that's cheating.

I like Python, I really do but I'm a newbie at it too. That out of the way, is PYTHONPATH the solution?

What about the other PYTHON Environment Variables?

I think I see it. You created a routine that inserted and then duplicated that code for each item. Now there are differing opinions about this but if it works, leave it. Working code that you understand is better than code you understand today but not later.

Somewhat famous programming quote following.

When I wrote that, God and I knew how it worked. Now only God knows.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

@W, sorry but the concept I presented is not specific to Delphi. Plus it's just an idea so no code has been written so links won't do since I presented an idea to get the effect in just about any language. There are some programmers out there that want ready to use codes. For me this isn't possible since I've not had Delphi installed for over a decade.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

I see this was kicked around before so I will avoid to not call out any duplication of replies and move onto an idea for this. Ready?

You'll have to make two listviews. One for the image, one for the text. More code but hey, that's the effect you want. Now the prior kickarounds talk about a custom image renderer (lots of code) so I wouldn't go there.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

That appears to be a really old Socket 478 (Pentium 4 or Celeron) board. No schematic was issued for these so you rarely can repair them. The only good news is such is usually cheap on Ebay. At least here.

The spark usually means the tech forgot to remove power from the PSU before working on the machine. They usually lose one board before they learn that lesson.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Agreed about the SEO posts. I find most are are disingenuous to spam or shill jobs. So many that if anyone was sincere they may be lost to me if they lead with the usual "my ratings have dropped, this is my site, what am I doing wrong?" Or worse.

That aside there was a few OP-ED pieces by a new member which was nice to see.

Dani has compared her work to a newspaper. Maybe that's the next move for the homepage. News that we read or news that we find interesting. I'm not sure the social "connect with" is working out.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

This is on one of those "once you see it." I hesitated but decided, hey, share a goof that lost me a day. Thanks for the update.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

This is a stretch since it seems to work here. So here's an example with a goof on my part.
floot.PNG
I have something in the search box but to the right of "test" is "13 hidden". Also in this shot I show the console sidebar.
Clear the search box and I get a display of the hidden items.

There's some chat about console.log() not logging when the "code snippet was attempting to grab the scrolling area" which was nothing I've ever tried. Wish I had more to offer but console.log() is working here on W10 Chrome Version 74.0.3729.169 (Official Build) (64-bit).

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

I have looked at the related topics and came to the same conclusion that it's a nice idea but looks to not be something I'd want in a next button to take me there. Since it must pull from what is in the data collection that exists, old and new threads would be presented. That's OK from a programming standpoint since old solutions can still work today. What new members don't get is replying to many year old inactive threads usually gets them silence or static. Too bad such posts are not locked when inactive for say years. How many years? Pick a number but 5 years seems long enough.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

I only used Dev C++ briefly so I can't recall if it allowed you to specify which directory to run in but I will bet you can specify command line parameters. Not one IDE I used in decades didn't have that. The early ones didn't have a pause after execution but that was added later. So go looking around your IDE for the options you need here. It appears there's really nothing busted here as the code looked fine and Reverend Jim confirmed that.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

I'm going to write this is a well done question. But the search I used lead me to a Python solution that covers Windows, Linux and Mac OS at https://automatetheboringstuff.com/chapter18/

Also https://www.google.com/search?q=Generating+keystroke+using+Linux+OS&gl=US finds priors so to me this looks to be well done.

For me, my first stop is https://www.daniweb.com/articles/latest and if I get an email, I go to latest rather than click on the email link. No, it's just force of habit to never click on any email link. Because I heard you were working on the homepage I did take a look and much better as folk that I show it to start to look around rather than wonder what this site is about. That's progress.

As to the cards, I'll write it's a nice experiment that may work for some out there. You can see how badly tiles (these cards look like that) worked out for Windows 8 back then. Kind of reminds me of that.

You covered what the homepage intent is at https://www.daniweb.com/community-center/meta-daniweb/threads/518667/homepage-content and now it seems to be doing that. Without the headline and forum titles I was getting well, what I've shared above.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Thanks for the new homepage. At least I'm not getting "what is that?" when I show daniweb.com to others. This is much better.

As to the cards, maybe this works for others but for me, I'd rather let it run its course and see where it goes. Just like a newspaper not every section is read by all.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

I left you hanging because this topic is fairly well done but maybe you are in your first year or so of compsci so let's read a back and forth like
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk%3ASorting_algorithm

All algorithms can be better or worse depending on how you measure. Sorting is one of the fun ones since results vary with how you measure.
Time: Sure but is that the only criteria? How about...
Space: As in how much space a routine consumes. Or "Sort the stars in the known Universe."
Comprehension: "What does that do?"

I'm sure there are more ways to question an algorithm but today, right now, with average datasets and a rocket in your pocket computers (smart phones) my vote goes to comprehension over speed unless speed is so bad you are asking "What is it doing?" over "What does that do?" Even a large dataset like the names of everyone in the USA isn't so large that we couldn't put that in a smart phone today.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Where did you read that? What do you think about this?

PS. I think you crossposted this across the web. What are folk telling you?

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

I can't guess what you mean by "elements" so I'll use this sentence from a random book on C# to define that.

An array stores a fixed-size sequential collection of elements of the same type.

So when you fill the array you keep count of how many elements then at the end to show them in reverse a simple for loop counting in reverse, printing the element from the array would be fairly simple to write in code.

My point here is robots.txt doesn't appear to be the answer. Looking around for more clarity I found this discussion in which Google's own webmaster John Mueller notes how to mass deindex.

"using a robots.txt won’t remove pages from Google’s index." was his point and again why I wrote no.

The full discussion is at https://www.seoinc.com/seo-blog/fastest-way-to-deindex-pages/ and IMO should be the fine answer on how to deindex where needed.

A little light on details but here's a trick I used long ago. To make a service available to just about any language app I set it up as a miniature server or service. You would connect to it via IP, send your query string much like SQL and the answer would come back on the same pipe.

Whether this applies or not is something I can't guess given what has been revealed so far.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

I really need to not post when it's late. My grammar was terrible. Sorry about that.

What I was getting at was while you have the dev kit today and even in a VM, your successor may not. Moving up can be cheap if you can use the Community versions of Visual Studio.

As to legacy apps, even I am stuck with a few VB6 apps that I got the client to pay up for a jump to making them install and run on W10. Using the web I found out how to get VB6's development system up on W10. This was crucial to figure out what else had to change in the app so it would install and run without having to resort to a VM or other tricks. As in natively on W10.

I did encounter a very odd issue that I noted at https://www.daniweb.com/programming/software-development/tutorials/516501/installing-visual-basic-6-on-windows-10-legacy-support-workarounds which is only there so others might not have to work out that bug.

Good luck in your efforts.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

PS. Smart Phones SHALL NOT let any old Bluetooth connection control the phone natively. If it does either over Bluetooth or USB that is now called a security breach. Just last year this article at https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/smartphones-from-11-oems-vulnerable-to-attacks-via-hidden-at-commands/ brought this up.

Why this matters? Mostly because folk might plug in their phone to some free charger or allow a Bluetooth connection and well, game over.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

You've changed the spec. You lead with one goal, changed the goal and still have many missing details.

On top of that, I don't see an API to do what you asked so you might have to write an app for the (unknown) phone that your PC app tells the app on the phone to dial that number.

Sounds like a good project for a new programmer to find out about coding for phone and PC!
