Hello,

It is possible that OS X won't see the Asante talk bridge. Couple things to check...

-- Is the Asante bridge running IP? If so, can you ping it? HP Jet directs do use IP, and you can telnet into them. I have not used the Asante bridge, so am not sure.

-- Did you enable Appletalk in OS X Networking? Go check the networking control panel, and make sure Appletalk is active on your active network interface. I believe it is off by default. Make sure you are in the proper zone and so forth.

Let us know if this works.

kc0arf 68 Posting Virtuoso Team Colleague

Hello,

Why you wish to do this could be an interesting discussion, but here are some technical things to think about.

* Your Linux should remain fine if you do nothing to the second disk. If you do adjust anything on the second disk, you will need to modify settings on your boot floppy (because your kernel may no longer reside on /dev/hdb1) and you will need to modify settings on /etc/fstab as the rest of your partition numbers may have changed.

* Your XP will need to be changed, as you are adding a partition to the first drive. You will need to adjust C:\boot.ini This file looks like this:

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect

You will need to change that partition information before you reboot, and that could be risky. Remember that if your XP is NTFS, you will not be able to get to it easily at all from DOS.

What would I do?

I would find an older used laptop, say a 386 / 486 with 16 MB of RAM or so, and use that for your DOS 5 missions. You are asking a lot of work for your computer, and if partition magic fails, a lot more work rebuilding it.

You must make backups before trying this.

kc0arf 68 Posting Virtuoso Team Colleague

Hello,

FIRST, BACKUP your computer. Don't read my next set of thoughts. Get it backed up, and get a schedule together to plan for the future. Burn to a CD-ROM, or some floppies, or consider an online storage (I built a file server, but that is an advanced solution).

As far as where to find the calculator. Hmm. I am not certain how to go and re-install that one. I do know that it comes with every mac, so I could compress mine down and email it to you. We would not be voilating anything doing that. Or you can hit the net, and find a suitible replacement that might be freeware or shareware.

Let me know what you would like to do. And my first question will be.... did you make the backups yet?

kc0arf 68 Posting Virtuoso Team Colleague

Hello,

There *might* be a way to directly connect a Mac and PC via Firewire, but without knowing your model, I cannot say further. Back in the day, there was a "SCSI Disk Mode" that a powerbook could go into under OS9, and hook it to another Mac via a SCSI cable. The powerbook would then turn into an external SCSI hard drive.

Now, if both computers have an ethernet connection, you could wire them up through a hub, and have one be a "server" and the other be a "client". IN this case, your PC would be the server, and the Mac would be the client. Let us know what OS you are running on BOTH computers, and we can help you out more there.

Or, you can burn a CD/DVD ROM. Assuming you ahve a burner on the PC, and a reader on the Mac, that would work too. (hint -- if you ever want to go reverse, to have a Mac burn, and a PC read, make sure to use ISO 9660 format on the Mac side so that Bill's friends can read the disk).

Let us know more details on what you have, and we can go from there. I'll look tonight.

Christian

kc0arf 68 Posting Virtuoso Team Colleague

Agree.

Need to know the model number. Some of the powerbooks had a chip on the battery (they were called intelligent batteries), and you had to run a reconditioner program here and there. My Powerbook G3 battery gets a little funny under OS X, and in order to do maintenance with them, I need to boot into OS 9.

Make, and OS are important.

Hello,

To clarify Yellow's point, make sure that 1.5 GB is available on the SYSTEM drive. I like the design of partitioning the hard disk, allowing for certain protections that are otherwise not available.

You might also consider archiving your music and photos to CD/DVD, as if this information is not backed up, it is in danger of being lost with a hardware problem. The time to think about backing up is NOW before you lose the data.

Applications are the easy things to restore; your settings and data are far more difficult.

Hello,

Novell is a Network Operating System, just like Linux and Windows 2000 / 2003 Server. Novell was the dominate networking environment in the PC / Mac world, until the mid 1990's, when Microsoft prepared NT 4 Server, and then Windows 2000 server. Novell handles printing, file sharing, web sharing, and a variety of things, but doesn't allow one to use the server as a substitute workstation like NT/2000 does.

kc0arf 68 Posting Virtuoso Team Colleague

HI,

I think there needs to be the this discussion, and might as well keep it here. Although no one will argue that politics is a "science" and good luck with the tech support on that.

I think that we have to bozos running for office. I'll be voting for Bush because I think Kerry is the greater of two evils. I do wish there were a different choice for canidates, but feel that anyone *qualified* to take the job *WONT* because of all the other baggage associated with the position. With all of the nuts running around today, why would a successful, intelligent, effective leader want to expose himself and his family to the rigors of high political office? A lot of energy to be spent, and what would he achieve? (I am using him for the sake of argument, I think a woman can lead too) I think that the way the press eats alive the private lives of the canidates seriously narrows the canidates, and flushes out the good ones who won't put up with the slander. So we get good ole' boys to run, and mediocre results continue.

I think we had to go to Iraq. I do not think it will end soon, and to be honest, am surprised that martial law is not in effect over there, and everyone sorted out. Then again, I repair computers and networks; I am not a military tactition. I do realize, though, that after WWII, …

Hello,

Yellow, thank you for the firewall information. I did not go too deep into it, as this topic was more of a "general" posting. I am glad you went onto some depth though.

My Mac lives behind a RedHat Linux box, and I use IPTABLES on that computer to manage the internet access. Other people may have a wireless router / hub that does firewalling for them too. If I had a choice, I would deny all incoming materials, unless I specifically need them, such as AIM perhaps. As my Mac rarely goes on the wild internet all by herself, that works for me just fine.

Yes, do change from IE to Firefox. DOn't delete IE though, as some agencies with narrow-vision will only code for that particular browser. On my Mac, I also keep IE and Safari around, just in case.

I do see little differences among the versions of Firefox that I have. For instance, the one on the Linux box kinda jams text together on some webpages that I wrote. The Mac shows them fine. Windoze Firefox show them fine too.

Hello,

One thing to consider with the iMac is that your memory slots may be limited. Check inside to see how many slots you have... you might already have 512 MB installed, but have two slots and both are filled with 256 MB. How can you check? Go to the Blue Apple menu in the upper left corner, and click on About This Mac... Then go and hit the More Info... button. Look in the Memory section of the Hardware panel, and see what your slots look like. If they are all full, you will ahve to remove memory in order to add a larger stick, meaning a piece will come out and stay out.

Think before you order, and go overboard if you can. Memory is always handy to have.

Hello,

In my humble opinion, the Keychain is a pain in the ass, and bad security management. In the ideal world, your passwords for things are all different, and not stored in some location. AutoLogin would be disabled, so that you have to authenticate everything. Granted, general users may scream at too much to remember, but who in non-cyber life has only one Key on their keychain? You have a house key, a car key, a trunk key, maybe one for the office, another for your locker at the gym....

Anyways, the Keychain control panel is in the SYSTEM VOLUME --> Applications --> Utilities --> Keychain Access. Mine is completely blank -- I refuse to keep anything in there, and thus am not prompted for anything. You may want to consider deleting anything in yours... but beware that it might break something, or you may need to start remembering all your special places again. Use at your own risk... I have never done this, because i have never had any in there to begin with.

Hello,

It is possible that your drive is bad. You mentioned that you checked a bunch of disks... all home made, or some commercial too? How about Music vs. Data?

You can try going to a Radio Shack and getting a CD-ROM cleaner. It is a CD with a little brush on it. It goes in there, and if there is dust around your eye, it will clean it out. Might bring it back to life. Or you can try an air can... blow a couple bursts of air in there and see if that does it.

If it is a bum drive though, you will need to replace it, or consider a USB / Firewire external unit. I have a USB & Firewire DVD burner that works quite well, and it can go from machine to machine.

Christian

kc0arf 68 Posting Virtuoso Team Colleague

Hello,

Making the folder is easy. Just make a new folder. Call it Applications on the new volume.

Then, when you install programs, use the customize features in a bunch of the installers to shift the volume from your system drive to your second drive. I have done this on my powerbook, and really like the split approach.

Be careful if you are doing this with darwin - unix software. You may cause the creation of a bunch of other folders like /bin /usr and that on the second drive. may confuse things. So far, I have been alright with OpenOffice. I just leave the extra folders alone.

Even if you do split the drives, some nuggets of a program will go to your system volume. That is just the nature of the beast.

Hello,

Whatever you do, do not run old Norton Utilities from OS 9 and have it churn your OS X system. It can destroy it. Just not a good thing to do. Do not boot into OS 9 and run it either. Of you run OS X on any volume, you need OS X tools to work with it.

There are discussions if you should optimize your disk or not. I like the idea of a good optimizing once in a while.

Quark is the BANE of Desktop Publishing. While my comments will not help you, let's just say that the Quark forums are loaded with gripes against tech support, and that these problems are happening often.

I used to use Quark around 3.3 and 4.1 The company has gotten much worse with supporting the product, and becoming more whacky in their copy-protection schemes.

You may wish to consider InDesign or Ragtime. If I had to recommend one, I would go with RagTime, unless you had some very specific business concerns that had to be examined.

I am supporting Quark 6.1 on two Windows computers at work, and they are randomly crashing and corrupting their documents. The software is half-cooked, and premature.

Yep. You should be able to insert a blank disk and have the Finder ask you what to do with it. Have you changed types of media? Meaning, did you used to use Verbatim brand CD-ROMS, and now are starting with TDK? Sometimes, the types of disks used will make the things behave funny.

Also, run Software Update to make sure you have the latest software. It is possible too that an upgrade broke it.

Try booting from the CD-ROM with the OS disk that came with your computer. I am guessing it is OS X. Hi,

How much time do you plan on investing to achieve these goals? Two of your quests are application: Oracle and Java. Linux is an OS. TO think you are going to rush in and get all three at one time may be a bit much.

Linux Admin
=========
Best way to do it is to build a box and use it daily. Make multiple partitons. Install. Do routing. Do server setups. Get Windoze and Mac to talk to it. Setup a print server. Setup tape / disk backups. Restore from disk. Compile code. Configure DNS. Do audio / video streaming. Migrate partitions from one hard drive to another. Setup VPNS. Setup an email system. Setup web based email. Point? You could spend a couple years doing this.

Suggestions: RedHat / Fedora Linux, SUSE linux, perhaps Mandrake. Avoid Debian... it is a challenging install, and documentation is all over the place. Dedicate a computer to it, and run it full time.

JAVA
====
DO you want to code it, or simply run the beans? You can, I think, code Java on Linux. I am not sure... perhaps a question on how to learn thatin the programming forums would be best.

Oracle
=====
Oracle is a hook into a database. Not sure if it is SQL or not. If it is, you can run MySQL or another SQL program on Linux, and use Oracle to latch into it. …

Hi,

I am glad to be a Mac / Linux guy! I believe along the lines with Alex that Microsoft has really caused problems by having the parts of the OS bloated with other functions, such as web browsing and print management. I think that a system who requires everyone with local administrator-level access is useless -- my Mac and Linux systems can have user-level processes running that do not require all the keys to the castle, and the programs work!

Until the day comes that your Windows machine (XP / 2000) can function without everyone on the box being a local administrator, you are going to be at risk. Yes, Microsoft has security structures, but if you cannot run AutoCAD without being a local administrator, those safety nets will be bypassed. No ifs ands or buts.

Until the Registry is protected, you are at risk. that is going to require a paradigm shift in Windows and Microsoft programming. Why? Because everyone assumes you are a local administrator. Why even bother with user level accounts at the local workstation level??

Back to the Orchard and Penguins,

Hi,

I doubt it is the firewall. If your network traffic is routed through your firewall to get to the servers, there is something wrong. Then again, there could be an internal firewall, but that doesn't make sense here.

You mention your desktop icons. Are they shortcuts, or full-blown data files and programs? Reason I ask is that if you are using a roaming profile, and these files are large, the profile is transferring them back and forth through the network to populate the system. It is a dangerous thing to keep live files on the desktop -- only keep shortcuts there.

I have also seen cases where in Novell networks that zenworks policies created a lot of network traffic trying to sync with other servers, especially in the start menu. Has your company recently re-named or decommissioned one of your servers? You might be trying to resolve broken links.

I would put money on a corrupt profile.

Christian

kc0arf 68 Posting Virtuoso Team Colleague

Hello,

This topic is in the proper forum. Let's not worry about that.

You mentioned that your hard drive was partitioned into two. It is unfortunate that when files are on your desktop, they are part of your profile, and thus are stored on the C:\ the directory structure that appears to be damanged.

I would boot off of a different hard drive, and then put this one in as the slave, and copy the files over (if you can get to them). Then after you are sure that your data is safe, format that partition and see what happens.

You might also consider getting a CD-RW to write your files to nightly. If that bothers you, you might consider setting up a second computer as a file server, so that your materials can be backed up to it. Another good idea is to stop loading up your desktop folder with data files. That affects your login speed, and if you do get a corrupt system partition, they are at risk.

Norton probably won't have a chance at it, unless the autosave feature uses unique file names to keep the versions straight. Hello,

The servers holding the distros are on the internet.... the bigger question is if you have the bandwith at home to download them and make the CD's. DO NOT TRY to download cd's via a phone line.... you will only get around 14 MB / hour at best, and it will be DAYS before it is done. You need a cable modem or a dsl line, or perhaps permission to do this at work where the internet could be faster.

Linux has a GUI available called X-windows. It is installed by default, and has a few flavors: KDE, GNOME, and other older ones such as twm or fvwm and the like. KDE and GNOME are the most popular and feature populated. Linux can boot to GUI, or boot to prompt. The more techie people go to prompt in the event they need to debug something, or are treating the the computer as a server instead of workstation.

Chat clients such as AIM and YAHOO and ICQ are available on linux. Not certain if sound support is available with the clients. Linux will play music (.wav and .mp3) just fine. The kicker is to see if the AIM/ICQ/YAHOO software will support sound in the clients.

Video Chat might be possible. Again, depends on drivers and setup.

Hello,

We have two things going on here... the proper transfer of license (political) and the OS issue of asking for the floppy disk. The OS 9 environment is caught up looking for that disk, and you will need to find a way to satisfy it's thirst.

First, the political... did he give you the Quark disks, and the license? I would be remiss if he kept the goods, and sold you the laptop... legally, that could be a problem. I will assume that you have the license.

You can try to make a blank floppy and name it "Scher 8_5". If you do, you will need to type it in exact as you see it! The OS 9 Finder may accept it, and allow you to move on, or at least error out, and be done with it.

Your G4 might also let you boot into OS 9 directly, and you may be able to deal with the floppy disk issue there.

The best way to avoid the issue is to always drag floppy disks (or any other volumes!) to the Trash before ejecting them.

Let us know.
