I actually made a perl robot myself. I have it running on one of my linux boxes and it uses the Net::AIM and Chatbot::Eliza. You can IM it at devstarbot :) I think that aim bots can be used for more than just chatting. I want to implement some kind …

Does anyone have an opinion on using circular linking versus the good ol' reciprocal linking? Or perhaps how to keep a link circle unbroken?

I was raised on video games as well. I got my NES when I was a mere 3 year old. It's crazy, there is an entire generation that have been raised on video games. It's like cable guy, but with video games (and/or computers) and a generation of humanity instead …

Any moron can put a trojan on a computer and break in if he/she knows if/what antivirus program the "person" has and is intelligent enough to know how to obtain an ip address. Back in the 1337 days it was all about sub7.... ahh yeah, think back guys... think way …

I don't know why you'd want to have such an advanced setup if you're only using dialup. My network topography goes Internet > Cable Modem > Linux Firewall > Linksys WRT4G wireless router + 4 port switch > nodes and it works great. But I would never have such a …

I think that learning QBASIC in your spare time is the perfect foundation for learning programming. Me and my friend (i686-linux) used to send QBASIC games and screensavers and chat over hyperterminal when we were young and too broke for internet access. That was so addicting that I craved for …

My view on religion (i like that label better than theology....), is that there is no God, but an energy that surrounds us and is a part of us and everything else. The little subconscious things (stuffy air, confined space) that make you feel a certain way in a certain …

I'm not sure about IDE's on linux, as far as I know none exist. There advanced text editors with nice syntax highlighting options. Vim is my favorite editor on linux by all means.

by "done all the spyware checks" what have you done? Have you used spybot? If so, have you checked for updates? Even when you download spybot's latest version, the adware definition list doubles when you use the check for updates feature.

My friend jesse is going to college and I'm helping him set up his linux box. He hasn't gotten online yet, but I was just wondering if colleges restrict linux internet access. I'm sure there's always a way around any restrcitions they have ;) but I was just wondering if …

What inspires you to maintain the pursuit of geeky knowledge? Personally, I'd say that the computer is an extension of myself, so it's the gratification of learning how to express myself through an extremely complex media. What are your thoughts?

I also prefer firefox. I use it on all three of my linux boxes at home and my windows box at work. If it weren't for the fact that some pages must be viewed in IE, I would never use it.

well, you can use an open(FILEHANDLE, "wget blabhablh". " |") or die "Cannot open wget: $!"; basically, that would take the output of wget blabalhbh and put it to a file handle so you can actually do something with it

I think thinkgeek.com sucks. With all of their mainstream geek shirts, it's making a trendy "geek" stereotype. I mean, imagine a world where little blonde geeks roam around in the latest trendy "geek" car, with geek shirts, shoes, and matching geek accessories! My definition of geek is me in my …

Link i686 said, if you have one of those modem/sound card combos... well, good luck getting it to work. I spent a week looking at documentation for the riptide drivers for the soundcard that comes on this hp pavilion 8776c. The modules would not work, so i looked on google …

I think perl is a perfect language to write apps in. The GTK API for perl is relatively simple, and if experienced enough, you can combine that awesome parsing/reg exp power of perl with a GUI and you have yourself something nice.

Well, you should definately give mozilla firefox a try. I like mozilla's products a lot more than micrsoft's or netscape's simply because mozilla's products are soooo fast, yet its quickness doesn't compensate for a lack of features.

Well, there can be many things going wrong. First you need to identify if the problem is hardware or software related. If you have a router/firewall, is it blocking access on that port? Is port forwarding set up correctly? Have you noticed anything fishy in your apache configuration?

yeah, the whole difference with tar.gz and bzip2 is that bzip2 gives you more compression, so file sizes are small, but bzip2 is a lot more resource intensive when decompressing. So when size is an issue, use bzip2.
