Probably more traffic between your machine and the one the file is located on. Try it at a different time and you might get a different speed again. Some downloads go at dialup speeds even, no matter how fast your connection is. Some sites get busier at some times than they are at other times, and speeds suffer as a result.

Tis sounds like a Windows problem rather than a hardware problem. Please let us know which Windows version you have.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Check the sticky at top of page.

Are you sure you've tested it 'barebones'? No USB headers etc etc attached? Checked front panel leads for reversed position? No internal cards or drives attached? (Even the power lead connected to a drive can cause a problem - disconnecting the data cable isn't enough. Reset CMOS?

The 7800GTX is a very recently released card. Perhaps the motherboard has 'issues' with it and might need a BIOS update before it will work with that card?

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Recently we've been getting a lot of questions from people who basically have the same problem - they've assembled a PC but it won't start up correctly!

There is a standard troubleshooting procedure for that scenario which everyone should follow, and I'll describe it to you in a moment. But first let me address a few common issues for people whose older PC won't start any more:

* Does it 'hang' when it's loading Windows or when it reaches the desktop?

If so your problem is most likely a software one and NOT a hardware problem. You should, of course, check that all the cooling fans are working (especially the ones on the processor and the video card) in case overheating is a problem. If you have two or more sticks of RAM which are from different manufacturers you could try using them one at a time in case a RAM mismatch is causing the problem. But other than that the only real way to see if it's a software or a hardware problem is to try running it with a fresh, clean installation of Windows.

Go buy a second hard drive. Extra storage space is always worth having and they're quite inexpensive. Swap your current drive out, put the new one in, and load Windows onto it. If all runs fine you know for certain that the problem is in your original Windows installation. If not you've got a second hard drive to use once …

Which Windows version are you using please? If you are running Windows XP you shouldn't be, because that hard drive is too small!

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Wrong, Bhstickman. The extra graphics memory does not make the card twice as good, and in fact could actually make it SLOWER. Often, when extra RAM is included on a low end display card the RAM chips used have higher latency than normal, leading to reduced performance. The 9200 graphics chip is too underpowered to adequately run anything which requires more than 128Mb of display RAM, and the availability of 256Mb cards for such low powered product lines is simply a sales gimmick!

If you take notice of the 'specifications' mentioned on PC games boxes you'd be led to believe that Video memory is the most important thing to consider, but it's not. The graphics chip on the card is the most important contributor to performance. Cheap cards aren't as good, and adding more memory doesn't make them good!

Hiya and welcome. You'll find, in the menu list at left, a link to the 'Web Development' section. Find the appropriate subsections there and you can ask all the questions you like :D

Cheers

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

The amount of RAM on the card means very little. It's the power of the graphics processor on the card that makes the difference.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Might work. Definitely should be tried.

By "it dies" do you mean that it actually boots into Windows and then shuts down?

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

2 things you could add to that system to make it a bit better Pim. A better display card for starters. Another 256Mb of RAM to follow up. That should improve your gaming quite a bit. It won't make your system a great one for gaming, but it can certainly be better.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Care to let us know what make and model both the motherboard and the processor are?

I suspect your problem might be the way you've attached the front panel connectors.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

What? Dual core processors? They're already available.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

The stuff on that site is all CD .iso images. It's a distrubution outlet for pirated software.

Link removed and topic closed.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

I've moved the topic for you. In future could you please make effort to locate the correct section in which to post your problem.

Cheers, and welcome to Daniweb :)

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

errmmmmm.........

If you want to hand over money for illegitimately distributed pirated goods then fine. I wouldn't touch that with a 10 foot pole. No company details, policy statements, nothing!

Tell me, when you send your money off and get nothing in return, what are you able to do about it?

When you send money off and get pirated software, that you could've downloaded for free from P2P, on;y to find out that it has limited functionality and no capacity to be upgraded, what are you able to do about it?

Nothing, because you've wasted money and it's your own fault!

Buy software legitimately or use the best available freeware alternatives. There's no such thing as software legitimately discounted to that extent!

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Hi Jay J and welcome.

We ask that questions not be posted to multiple forum sections. As you've already posted the question to the correct section there's no need for it to attract answer here as well. I've edited your post to include a link to the actual topic.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

The new generation display cards are PCI-E only, at least initially. Any change other than a better display card will do stuff-all to make your games faster more than just a tiny tad.

Keep saving mate, and by the time you get more dollars together there will likely be games which take advantage of dual-core processor rigs ;)

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

You'll need to indicate what sort of computing tasks you wish to perform on the system in order that worthwhile advice can be given.

In the absence of such information, I can only advise that $400 spent on upgrading that system is money spent for the sake of spending money, and would be better used as savings toward your next PC.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Boot into Safe mode, thoroughly scan for and remove all viruses and spyware, do a refresh install of windows if necessary. But we'll move this to the Windows section and discuss those matters in detail once you've determined if it's a hardware problem or not. Borrow another keyboard and mouse if necessary, and find out, eh?

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Bill, the 'ieView' plugin (http://ieview.mozdev.org/installation.html) for Firefox and Mozilla is an essential extra. With it installed you simply need right-click relevent links and choose "Open in Internet Explorer". The browsers do NOT stop you from accessing such sites, they simply allow you to restrict having ActiveX in operation for all but trusted and necessary sites.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

I'm suspecting a simple software problem.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Got a name for that dish? Add some Cajun spice mix and it's awfully like 'Dirty rice'.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Sounds like a software corruption issue to me. Have you tried using a different keyboard and/or mouse, to check that the problem is actually a hardware one?

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Refer you to this topic, Thong man:
http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread26820.html

PC boy, I've already merged two of your topics which related to this same problem. Could you PLEASE restrict your discussion of the incident/problem to the thread you originally started? This is the sort of confusion which occurs when you split it up.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

jwenting, there are lies, damned lies and statistics, as someone once said. You can play games with data and the way it's presented to support just about any stance you wish to.

Simple fact is, we do immense harm to the planet we reside on, and have an urgent need to change the ways we interact with it. There's simply no justification for continuing to use fossil fuels and natural resources at a rate greater than at which they can be replenished.

You can go beyond that to assume, from the convincing evidence you've reviewed, that global warming is not a side effect of that process and in fact does not exist. Others will choose, from the equally convincing body of evidence available, that it does in fact occur and is a matter for urgent concern.

You've stated your view clearly in this topic. Why do you need to repeat it on numerous subsequent occasions when others express conflicting outlooks?

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

I probably should extend that to include mutiple media players, multiple DVD palying applications etc etc..........

Decide on the program you actually WANT to use and stick with it. Less problems that way ;)

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Hi anastacia and welcome to Daniweb. I know I'm rather late in saying that, but then you're rather late in saying hello!

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

George Orwell, where are you? 1984 is finally here!

Edit: This was posted before I saw your comment above. doesn't change my mind though. I consider any technology of this type to be simply far too big a risk to have implemented.

Maybe it's the good old Aussie contempt for authority in me, but I don't and will never place that much faith in the people who oversee such schemes and in the Governments they answer to.

Hi jmutaza.

We ask that newcomers read the FAQ and relevent announcements and pinned topics in the various forum sections. We ask that newcomers also make effort to post their questions in the relevent forum section.

I'll move this one for you to help get you started :)

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Download it. Run it. The files will self-extract and the installation will automatically run.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

I'd strongly suggest that the uninstall/reinstall be the first response, and the upperfilter/lowerfilter registry edit be done only if the problems recur. There are quite a few similar circumstances which lead to optical drive problems such as this. Uninstall/reinstall of the drive quite often fixes the problem without further intervention necessary.

Regardless of the specifics of the drive problem, having multiple Burning and emulation programs installed is a recipe for disaster. Here's my own recipe for success (on Windows XP machines)

* Do not use CD-RW discs. CD-R discs are inexpensive items, and it simply doesn't matter that you aren't filling it before burning it!

* Use the CD burning wizard of Windows XP for copying files to CD wherever possible.

* Have Nero installed. For preference, use the full retail version. Use Nero for specialised CD burning tasks and for large backup jobs.

* Have CloneCD installed if you wish to create safety backups of program CDs. Do not install any drive emulation components which may accompany it.

Do not use any other burning software.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

You're welcome. Two quite different responses, both of which are very relevent :D

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

First up. Emergency action.

There should be a tiny round hole at front of the unit. With the PC turned off, unfold a metal paperclip, poke it in the hole and manually eject the CD that's in the drive.

Second up: Solving the problem

This behaviour is most often a software fault, and occurs when CD burning software confuses Windows. Uninstall all CD burning software. Then from Device manager uninstall the CD-RW drive. Reboot. The drive will be detected again and reinstalled. Then reinstall ONLY the CD burning package that you commonly use, rather than multiple programs. If that CD burning package is Adaptec throw it away and go get Nero instead.

Hi Pricessy, and welcome. The best tip I could give you is to suggest you read the 'Special Welcome' topic at the top of this forum section, and the 'How to do stuff' topic linked in it. Then familiarise yourself with the various forum sections and what they're for and dive right in!

RFID tags can make for a safer society.

Balderdash!

The misuse of technology in this way cannot lead to a 'safer' society because human nature will lead it to be misused, and implemented for purposes of control rather than to assist you.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

The best approach to keeping the registry clean is to ensure that the computer is kept free of spyware and other intruders, and to ensure that the software installed is carefully chosen before installation, rather than added, removed or left and forgotten willy-nilly simply for the sake of it.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Topic stickied. Great job!

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

You should not need to change the jumpers on that motherboard. According to the manual it should autodetect the correct settings for the processor you fit.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Were it any other form of software I'd not hesitate to agree with you. But any security software which needs to scan your system for intruders also needs to regularly update itself to ensure that it is scanning with definition files which are completely up to date.

An antivirus or antispyware product which is not updating itself is next to useless.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

I'm not having a good night here at all. I thought the video card was an X300 :(

Yes, I'd go along with that. The slightly better video and bigger display would tip my choice also.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

My bad. didn't realise the 640 was a 2Mb cache chip

oops :)

Thanks for reminding me about the Cookbook, Christian. I've added a recipe and stickified the thread, at least for a while. Let's see if it attracts more interest.

By the way, Dani? Did you ever learn to cook?

Thai Meatball Salad

Sounds complicated but it's not. Qucik 'n' easy, really, and tastes scrumptious!

Meatballs

600g or so of minced beef
1 teaspoon ground coriander
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 cup coarsely chooped fresh coriander
1 tablespoon sweet chili sauce
1 egg lighly beaten
2 tablespoons olive oil

Combine all ingredients except oil in a bowl, mix well by hand and roll heaped teaspoons of mixture into balls.

Heat oil in a pan and cook in batches until browned all over. Drain on absorbent paper and cool.

Dressing

1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 tablespoon brown sugar
2 teaspoons grated lime rind
2 tablepoons lime juice
1 long red chilli, finely sliced
1/2 cup finely chopped fresh coriander
1/2 cup finely chopped fresh mint
1/4 cup fish sauce

Combine in a screw top jar and shake well to mix.

Salad

200g baby spinach leaves
125g cherry tomatoes, halved
2 radishes, thinly sliced
Lebanese cucumber, thinly sliced

Putting it together

Add two thirds of the dressing to the meatball in a salad bowl. Toss well. Combine the salad ingredients in a large salad bowl, add meat balls and remaining dressing. Toss gently to combine and serve.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Nope. Software needs to be able to access the drive. A professional data retrieval service could probbaly get it back by removing the platters and fitting them to another drive case, but it'd be awfully expensive.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

And more capable I'd suspect ;)

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

From what I can gather the display circuitry in those systems is much of a muchness. Low end 3D graphics!

I reckon I'd grab the AMD system if the prices are comparable.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Silly sausage. All you need to do is ensure that the OEM Windows CD is supplied along with the machine.

Edit: Having Windows supplied with such a system is usually a reasonably small extra cost ;)

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Reset CMOS. Try again.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

I would avoid name brand PCs if gaming is the goal. Purchasing locally assembled systems can get you much more machine for the same price.
