Hi malikali. I've split your post off from an entry in the 'Windows XP Tips 'n' Tweaks' section for discussion in this Windows XP section. I've also edited out several links to your personal website. Such links are not necessary to the topic, and are disallowed in forum posts here other than in the appropriate sections. After you've made 10 posts or more you'll be able to include a link to your website in your forum sig.

Whilst some of the comments you've made are commonsense tips, I have to worry about some aspects of your approach. Regular PC maintenance needs to include more than just regular defragging. Due attention MUST be paid to regularly cleaning out debris such as temporary files etc etc, and to removing unused programs.

In addition, I very much reject the view that Windows should be installed cleanly every 3 months or so. In my view, that is the approach of someone who does NOT know how to look after their Windows installation, and is taking an 'easy way out'.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

...And yes, you are correct, this thread should probably be in the Networking forum rather than here. I don't have privs to move it, though.

I've been pretty busy elsewhere for a few weeks and have 'missed' dealing with quite a few misplaced topics.

On reading through this though, I suspect that it's one of those 'exceptions to the rule' topics which are probably best left here rather than dealt with in a Tech section. "Why you shouldn't use AOL", while ostensibly a tech related matter, is perhaps also a 'culture' thing :)

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Hi people.

First point is that questions should NOT be 'tacked on' to old topics. Your questions deserve a new topic of their own, and will be better addressed if that occurs.

Second point is that this is an old topic which was initially misplaced and has now been 'resurrected' from the dead. Questions are best dealt with in the appropriate forum sections, and the appropraite section for this topic is 'Web Browsers' in TechTalk. In that section, you'll find a pinned topic which links to a detailed guide to installing Firefox and configuring it as your default browser. You'll find plenty of assistance in that topic!

Now that this has happened, I'll move this topic to the appropriate forum section, but in future could people please be careful to locate their questions appropriately?

Cheers :D

Any chance that this is simply a browser issue, by the way?

A move to Mozilla as a preferred browser a while back 'broke' my work console log in, to the extent that for a while I had to 'click' alongside the buttons rather than on them. My worksite was coded for Internet Explorer and other browsers were not coping with it very well at all.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Don't know about you mate, but

Crap like this is what you get when you try to make a web site without knowing HTML and CSS.

doesn't seem to me to be helpful at all.

I've come here via a 'bad post' report, and am no coder by any twisted stretch of the imagination, but I'm all too aware that there are applications both software and web based which enable people to create websites without ever needing to learn a single part of coding. A simple google search tells me that Dreamweaver is one such application.

I'd expect that when an inexperienced person asks a technical question they should be met with politeness and assistance if such is a possibility.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Did you try the 'Workaround' in that link?

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Motherboard manual, bottom of page 13:
http://www.asrock.com/Drivers/Manual/K7S8XE+_UM.pdf

Power off, switch off at outlet, remove the ATX power connector from the motherboard and short the jumper as described. (If there's no jumper cap there, 'borrow' one from another jumper on the board, but be sure to put it back afterwards.

Replace the ATX connector, power up and see if it works.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Did you reset CMOS and try?

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Okeys.

Did you have power turned off at the power outlet, or remove the power cord when you changed cards? If you simply shut down windows, opened the case and changed cards you may have damaged something, because there would still be power to the motherboard.

Are you sure that the new card is firmly and fully inserted into the slot?

Are you sure that the monitor cable is firnly and fully attached?

Is there a chance that you've bent a connector pin when changing cards?

Is there a chance that the monitor cable is damaged?

Was the monitor turned off when you were making the change?

Last but not least by any means, did you reset CMOS on the motherboard after changing the card?

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Visit www.nvidia.com and download the latest drivers from there. Put them on a CD. (Use another PC to do the job, of course)

Boot into 'Safe mode'. Uninstall all display drivers you can find. Use System Properties -> Device Manager and 'View Hidden devices to check if there are any 'phantom' display devices and uninstall those also.

Install the driver downloaded from Nvidia and reboot.

Sure! Family is cool!

What's another several thousand grandkids anyway?

Hi and welcome to Daniweb.

Problems such as you describe are most often software ones. The fact that your lockup occurs during the process of Windows booting is very suggestive of this. Suspects are any and all software which relates to the CD drives, including CD playing/DVD viewing software, and in particular burning software.

Suspect first those programs which load at startup, and either configure them not to or uninstall them as part of your troubleshooting.

If all else fails, a format/fresh install perhaps sounds warranted before you rush off spending money on new hardware. You need to eliminate possible software causes before assuming it's a hardware problem. I'll move this to the relevent Windows section for you.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

It should be fine with your system. The question you need to ask, however, is do you need it? Only you can answer that question!

If it's to be included basically because it 'looks cool' then it's not worth the effort. Also, some units like that, when used for monitoring processor temps and fan speed, can require a bit of 'modding' to the HSF wiring to get things working as required.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Hi, and sorry for the delay in getting to your question.

I suspect a clue to your problem might lie in:

i Had a 100 cd's of 52x brought for backing the entire hardisk as it is and really worried about the thing..

If that's a spidle of 100 budgetty CDs it is probably the case that you're simply trying to burn at too high a speed to get reliable results. I don't care how fast the manufacturer claims the drive can burn at, the higher the write speed the more likelihood of 'coasters' you introduce.

I'd suggest you reduce the write speed to something more reasonable and see if you get more reliable outcomes. Anything above 24x write speed, after all, is really only a luxury to be used with the most expensive high quality blanks ;)

It is also preferable, if you are experiencing burn quality problems, to shut down as many background tasks as you can whilst burning.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

If you have Windows XP, won't the Programs-Accessories-Scheduled Tasks feature be sufficient?

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

This should help:
http://www.sitedeveloper.ws/tutorials/outlook.htm

Use the Windows 'Search' function to locate the relevent folders on your old hard drive and on your new system.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

I suspect a refresh install of Windows (Run 'setup' from the Windows CD whilst in Windows itself) might be needed to correct the syatem corruption you obviously have.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Hi,

I'm sorry to tell you, but the sort of feature you're after would really only be available in commercially sold software :(

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

I would suggest that wiping the hard drive and reinstalling the system fresh might be an idea. Make sure that you back up data first, if possible, fitting the hard drive as 'slave' in a different PC to back up data if necessary.

You need to determine if it really is a hardware problem, and a fresh install is usually the best method of doing just that. If it still doesn't work with a fresh install of Windows, then it's time to start looking for hardware problems ;)

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Thanks for letting us know. Sometimes problems are simply beyond what a help forum can assist with. :(

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Slow down. Stop panicking.

Read the pinned topic at top of page, strip the PC back to bare basics as described and troubleshoot it that way.

If it's a system problem you'll be able to use the hard drive as slave in a digfferent system and recover your data no problems. If it turns out to be the hard drive (which I don't think it is) you might have problems.

Let us know how you go tracking down the source of the POST problem please.

The other sensible solution for dial-up users is to get a friend with briadband to download the entire developers installation pack for SP2 and save it to CD.

Downloading it via dial-up is a last resort option, in my view.

Instructions for resolving error 0502:

Check the encoder strip on the printer. (This is a clear strip running the length of the printer, above or behind the cartridge carrier.) Do the following:

  1. Switch off the printer using the power button.
  2. Disconnect the power cable from the back of the Lexmark X5100 / X6100 Series.
  3. Leave the power cable disconnected for 30 seconds.
  4. Slide the cartridge carrier to the middle of the printer by taking the top part of the belt and moving it gently to the right.
  5. Take out both cartridges.
  6. Place an index finger on the encoder strip on either side of the cartridge carrier.
  7. On the back of the cartridge carrier, there is a small slot that the encoder strip fits into. Slightly push the encoder strip down and then back up to get it into the slot.
  8. Lightly press the strip first to the rear and then forward, if necessary.
  9. Clean the encoder strip with a dry tissue. Also clean the contacts of the printer.
  10. Reconnect the power cable and switch the printer on again.
  11. Perform the hardware test without cartridges first and then with both cartridges.*
  12. Make a standalone copy.
  13. If the copy is satisfactory, repeat the test once to confirm that the error is gone.

* Refer to this document.

Have you read the pinned topic at the top of page in this section, and followed the suggestions there?

Post back here and let us know how you go after following the steps outlined in that article.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Javascript is listed under Web Dev.

Some sections have been amalgamated, an I'd consider that to be somewhat of a good thing as there seemed to be far too many sections before.

Be best to mention the specific model of Compaq PC you have, so more specific advice can be given. Compaqs do not come with a Windows CD. Windows and preinstalled software are loaded from the recovery CD or partition.

There will certainly be a method of reloading your PC back to its original factory state

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Most likely the result of the way front panel connectors have been attached to the motherboard. It could also be the result of a different configuration of fans etc in the new case. Reset CMOS,check the motherboard front panel connectors and try again.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

For starters, 'Centrino' isn't a processor - it's a wider standard for laptops which incorporates many design factors. The processor used in Centrino laptops is the PentiumM.

The Turion is AMD's rival to the PentiumM, and while comparable models offer slightly higher performance benchmarks the platform does not offer the added features of Centrino. Of particular importance is the fact that Turion based laptops do not enjoy the extended battery life of Centrino laptops, because the Turion draws more power and does not have the efficient power management of the PentiumM.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Definitely before installing any freeware program google 'programname spyware'

A bit of a read through the search results should soon tell you if that program is known to carry intruders with it.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

The procedure works fine with OEM CDs. It is a reinstall of XP over the top of an existing XP install, not an upgrade from an earlier Windows version ;)

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

In place upgrade install is what you are referring to.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315341&Product=winxp

Windows updates will need to be reinstalled afterwards. Thus it is a good idea for those with broadband connections to first download and save to CD the full installation package for Service Pack 2:

If you have both worked through the step by step instructions in this pinned topic:

http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread27079.html

and still cannot get a 'bare bones' configutation to POST then yes, perhaps it is time to get a technically qualified person to look at it for you.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

My mistake. I thought you were referring to the topic post :D

Actually, jwenting has a very good point. I'd consider it rather important, with the current state of world affairs, that everybody do a bit of learning about Islam. There's simply far too much misinformation floating around. We should never simply read one source though, and take it as ultimate truth at face value. We should read wider, question, and only form opinion after we've adequately done so.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Why does there have to be a point? It was simply an interesting link.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

I'm sorry, but Bittorrent is a P2P filesharing program, and as such it is not permissible to give assistance with it on this forum board. That is against forum rules.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

errmmm........

It sounds very much like the fellow has already done a refresh install and corrected the problem, although he hasn't specifically said so.

In any case that is a Beta version of WMP you've linked, not a final release. The final release of WMP 10 is available from Microsoft.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

I'd like to point out, TechMaster, that quite a few of the display cards listed in that guide can no longer be purchased, in most places, as they are discontinued items.

It is also not up to date with regard to current high end cards.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Your question makes very little sense.

You may as well ask "Why did someone start a topic about Recipes?" or "Why did someone start a topic about favourite games?" or query any of the other topics people have started in the Lounge section.

I'm sorry if it upsets some people, but the Lounge section is NOT some exclusive 'club' where only people holding particular views may participate. It is perfectly permissible for people to object to military intervention and for them to express those views.

Mild oaths are aceptable here when used for emphasis and this has been strongly endorsed by the owner of the site. Excessive and/or gratuitous use of obscenity is not. There is a distinction. But personally directed abuse is not acceptable in any form at all.

The example you've cited above ( a comment made by myself for the benefit of others reading this) was a question posed to someone who posted a very patronising comment which was denigrating to women, obviously acknowledged its offensive nature, and then sought to 'justify' the comment by adding a statement that offense was not intended. I strongly queried the sense of doing that. Surely if it is understood that a comment is offensive then the comment should not be made!

The answer, of course, to your question "why the f*** did he open his mouth?" is simply that he had a view to express. Regardless of whether or not I agree with that view, …

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

You should check the 'Link Swap' item in the menu at left of page.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

No personal feelings whatsoever enter the situation. My comments are directed toward the smooth operation of Daniweb, where personal abuse is not acceptable. People who post here should not have to contend with being called 'bozo' or 'idiot' or anything of the ilk.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

I still don't think you undestand at all. When someone posts a topic like that, they should be well ready to take "heat" and quit frankly, if this guy was serious about getting his point across he would be right back in here in this discussion.

Argue all you like. It's not going to stop the fact that if the 'heat' you mention is in the form of personal abuse it is NOT going to be acceptable on a forum such as this.

THAT'S the point being missed here. The only thing wrong in this topic is that some people have earlier resorted to name-calling, and that the view has been expressed that name-calling is acceptable. It is not.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

I'm sorry, but if we are to presume that someone's purpose is to offend when they have made no comment or statement to that effect then we might as well disallow all discussion no matter what the stance taken.

The post above simply presents information and discussion pieces. There are a lot of people in this world who agree with such opinion, and there are a lot who disagree. Are you arguing that people should not have the freedom to express opinion? I'm merely insisting that when such expression takes place here courtesy is extended in the way it is expressed.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

His post is not abusive. It simply makes claims that you disagree with.

Your suggestion that I possibly can't be understanding because I don't live in the US is patronising in the extreme! And the 'name calling' is the only thing that really matters to me in my role as moderator here. It won't be happening ;)

Do you honestly not realise that your own rigid views can also be seen as 'one sided propaganda garbage'? Different strokes for different folks, and people have conflicting views. Perhaps some people need to realise and accept that.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

I consider it to be well beyond what one would reasonably expect to need installed in an everyday PC. In fact, you're pumping as much air there as I do in my own custom built case and overclocked games rig.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

What'd I say about cooling solutions?

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

No, that's not a fact, belama.

As for convincing arguments, the power usage is the primary factor which concerns me. The higher powered Pentiums simply run too hot for realistic consideration, in my view, requiring at times some quite ridiculous cooling solutions when used in a performance system.

When better performing AMD processors use 20 to 30 watts less power, it's clear to see that Intel simply hasn't got it 'right' ;)

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

AMD often deceives customers by listing performance comparisons between their highend CPUs and Intel Celeron while listing those Celerons as Pentiums

There is absolutely no need for AMD to do that, as they enjoy a clear performance lead in every processor category currently available, except for the Centrino's PentiumM, for which AMD does not yet have a competitor.

Add to that the fact that current AMD processors use power more efficiently and thus run at lower temperatures, and I'm sure you'll find that the 'reliability' enjoyed previously has now evaporated ;)

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Enough with the abuse!!!!

:mad::evil::mad::evil:

Disagree with comments someone makes but there is no need whatsoever to call someone names when doing so. That sort of behaviour only belittles the argument that you try to put forward yourself.

People are entitled to hold rigid and conflicting views, and to express them. they are also entitled to expect courtesy in the way that others put forward their disagreement. If anybody here finds it impossible to put forward their views without being abusive or discourteous then I'd suggest they don'y bother. Member accounts WILL be suspended if such behaviour is continually exhibited!

Comparison of statistics gathered during WWII are rather meaningless for the purposes of this particular discussion, by the way. They demonstarte nothing whatsoever.

For the record, I'm Australian, I supported the Iraq war and still do so. Call me stupid, because the Iraq war was NEVER about defeating terrorists or protecting the world against 'Weapons of Mass Destruction'. Regardless, I believe that brutal, hideous regimes such as that of Saddam Hussein SHOULD be toppled by the collective efforts of the free world.

I believe the Iraq war to be now over and won! I believe that we in the so-called 'free World' have a collective responsibility to continue peace keeping activities in the region. Note that I said 'PEACE KEEPING'. We are no longer engaged in a 'war' against a tangible foe of any description! Even El-Queda is no longer an 'organisation' …
