I'm with your logic, whirlwind ;)

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Should be as normal. The quickest way to confirm it, of course, is to plug it in and see if BIOS sees the drive. If it doesn't and can see it when the connector is reversed, then you have it successfully worked out!

Here's a rather good review of the newly released Pentium 4 3.8Ghz chip, the lowest rated dual-core Pentium chip, and comparisons with AMD chips.

You'll notice that in single core applications, the 3.8GHz Pentium is still outperformed by the Athlon64 3500+ But there's a lot of informtion in the article and it's worth a read.

That it did mate. You threw up a word at me which i'd never heard before, which had me looking up the meaning and wading through several references to it before I could even begin to see what it had to do with electronics, and which had me chuckling at myself for even bothering to do all that!

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

No, the problem is that it makes no difference whether you are online or not. Your drive will inevitably become fragmented and you will need to defragment it. More specifically, the problem is that you need to determine how frequently you are going to do this, and my contention is that it is rather silly to do it obsessively and excessively.

Doing it obsessively and excessively creates mechanical stress on a mechanical device. The electromagnetic capabilities will doubtless diminish over time, but the extent to which it does so depends upon the materials it is constructed from and the quality of its manufacture.

Your question just then gave me hystericus :D

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

That doesn't appear to be correctly reading your system. Are there any other monitoring tools installed?

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

The drives must be incorrectly configured, and it's probably because of incorrect jumper settings.

Ensure that the drive set as 'Master' is attached to the end cable connector, and the drive set as 'slave' is attached to the middle cable connector. Avoid using the 'Cable select' jumper setting.

Please don't hijack topics.

Please note that your question has already been answered. New fans are cheap and it's not worth the effort of trying to get old ones working again! You'll find that the same sentiments have been expressed by numerous people in other similar topics.

Have you checked that the DVD works in a normal DVD player? As I understand it, not all DVDs work in all DVD-ROM drives. Maybe you've simply found an incompatible one.

Hiya Mike, and welcome to Daniweb. I'm Terry, a still-working grandparent who rediscovered PCs about 5 years ago, learnt everything he knows about them from online sources such as this, and who now makes a living writing 'expert' comment about them :)

Please feel free to familiarise yourself with the various sections of our forum, and ask all the questions you want to. I feel sure that you'll also find occasions where you can contribute the knowledge you've already learnt to help other people out too!

Actually, the best solution is this:

1. Always choose to perform a CUSTOM or ADVANCED installation of a new program. Stepping through the installation will allow you to make choices about the settings for the program, and one of those choices will almost certainly be whether or not you want the new program to have file types associated with it.
2. Should you find that a new program does not allow you to have choice about filetype associations, cancel the installation and discard the program.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Alright, some little fag in here gave me some more negative reputation. This is becoming rediculous.

Surely using terms like the italicised words is unecessary, rude, and an action which would invite yet more? Some people will certainly issue negative rep not for what you say but for the way that you say it.

That's twice for this one thread. Whoever is doing this: You are the most childish and immature person here. By the way, you may think your making me mad, but I don't really care about the rep system.

hhmmmmmmm??????????

Sunandoghosh, sorry if I offended you with my earlier post. We all make mistakes. I can't say that I haven't posted anything against the rules! So don't worry about your thread being closed.

Precisely! Nice comment.

Some people are really touchy about the downloading topic, although they probably use file sharing networks also but wont admit it.

Huh? If that comment was made in reference to the rules here and the people who have drawn them up then I find it somewhat offensive. Daniweb is supported by advertising revenue, and such a rule is a sensible one in light of that. Whether Dani uses p2p networks (which she doesn't) or not is totally irrelevent. This rule has nothing at all to do with making moral judgements about people, although you seem to be taking it as a personal affront!

Right now, I'm just a little pissed off at the stupid behaviour of some …

Your 6600GTs are overpriced and your X700s are getting thrown out at bargain basement prices because no-one wants them! :p

:lol::lol:

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Yes the 6600GT is better but it cant be compared with the X700 PRO!!! They have a price tag of 100$CAN difference.

Either you are looking in the wrong places or pricing policies in Canada are rather strange. A price search for both of those here in Australia shows both to be available for as little as $AU245. No price difference at all here :)

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Best card to get in that broad price range, by far, is the 6600GT. It's a little more expensive than the X600 but a LOT more powerful!

If absolute performance is the objective and price is no matter then the X850 cards from ATi are the card of choice. But the performance/value crowns for mid-range and high performance display cards are very, very firmly held by the nVidia based 6600GT and 6800GT.

Fanboism is silly!

And yes, the X600 is a dud which is really only comparable to a 9600XT

Alternatively, if you are unable to write CDs on tha laptop at all, hook it up to someone else's system via a network cable, copy the files across to that system and put them on CD from there.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

If you are defragmenting on a weekly basis then you are certainly subjecting your drives to an extreme and unnecessary amount of mechanical activity. Remember it's not just the platters rotating on their spindle, the read/write heads are located on a movable arm which jumps about all over the place as well. The more use your hard drive is subjected to, the shorter its working life is going to be. That stands to reason.

Precisely what effect that has in terms of useful lifespan I don't know. I mentioned above that defragmenting should really only be done when you've had noticeable slowdown on your system which results from file fragmentation. Defragmenting on a weekly basis seems to me to be similar to the housecleaning conducted by a person with obsessive/compulsive disorder!

The more sensible approach is to, on those occasions when defragmenting is actually needed, set the process in motion when you are walking away from the system rather than sitting down to it ;)

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Yes, that would be a sensible way to approach the job. Leave the original drive out of the system till after you get windows installed on the new one, and ensure you create a separate partition on the new drive for data. You won't need all of it for Windows.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Best you tell us what make and model that card is, eh?

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

To minimise the amount of time spent disable all running programs before defragging. If your drives are accessible in Safe Mode you are best to defrag from there.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

hmmmmmm.......

That's actually a software program which gets installed to control the firewall on your motherboard. I'm not familiar with it, but I'll move the topic to the Windows XP section to see if anyone is.

With it disabled you have no firewall protection, and that's a concern.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

err...

John, are you using Windows XP?

What exactly is the name of the 'hardware/software firewall' you are using?

Please indicate if you have both, the name of the software firewall program and the make/model of the hardware firewall. This is not a motherboard issue, and I'll move it to the appropriate section for you when the information is forthcoming.

If you are online frequently you should regularly clean your PC with antivirus and with spyware/malware detection and removal tools. You should also use 'disk cleanup' at least monthly, to remove the debris and unecessary files which accumulate on your PC, but that's regardless of whether you're online or not.

If, after all that, you notice your PC is starting to slow down a bit, then you should defragment. There's no point in defragmenting unless you are suffering performance loss from file fragmentation.

File fragmentation occurs because your hard drive is divided up into myriads of little 'boxes' called sectors. Files are often bigger than the sectors, and need many of them to be stored in. Windows finds empty 'boxes' for your file to be saved in, and if they are not physically together your file will be spread in a number of locations on the drive. Of course the more you delete files, add files, open and resave files the more your files will become split up all over the hard drive.

Defragmentation finds all the bits and pieces of your files and moves them all so that each file is together in the one spot. That speeds up file access, of course, because the heads of the hard drive don't need to jump about all over the place to read each file.

But as I said, defragment only when you need to.

Any graphics editing program can be used to resize the image to no more than 80 x 80 pixels. MS Paint will do if you have no other such program.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Sorry, but Windows doesn't provide that degree of customising, and there is no free tool available which is both suitable and stable enough to be worth using.

Even if you use the more recognised software programs such as StyleXP and so on, downloading user created themes is itself a potential source of problems, because there can be no guarantee that the theme pack will give stsability.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Most likely going to be a Compaq diagnostic or support utility of some sort.

Uninstall any entries you see in Add/Remove programs which relate to Compaq's help and suupport services then reboot and see if it's fixed. Otherwise work through the startup list selectively

 also can u also explain why people always suggest format and install windows xp (after of cousre taking a back up on cd) whenever there are too many problems in pc???????????????????????????????????????????????

thanks

p.s. i also fail to understand why people partition hard drive...should i partition it? if yes why to take trouble? any strong reasons...........

Sometimes problems on a Windows PC get to such a mess that the best and easiest way to recover from them is to wipe the drive and start of fresh. These problems exist because of things that people have done on their computer. Going back to 'original state' and letting Windows work the way it is designed to, free of 'nasty intruders' and user-created system corruption is a fresh start.

All hard drives need to be partitioned. Without a partition in place the drive cannot be formatted and used to store data. It's like a chest of drawers without the drawers inserted!

On many hard drives only one partition is created, and it uses all the available storage space on the drive, like a building without internal walls is simply one large room. Some people create more than one partition and use each for different things. If you use two partitions, load Windows and your programs on one and use the other for all your data files, then when you have to wipe and reinstall the system partition your data will stay where it is and not be lost!

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Pls say why to first delete and then again recreate if one is already having partitioned hard drive????????

What is creating image of the drive (heard it for the first time)???????????????

Does it offer any advantage over taking back up in CD through CD writer as i currently do????????

What is the first state? Plz be a bit more explicit?????????????

Fair questions and ones for which the article(s) presume the reader has some degree of prior knowledge.

Why delete and recreate partition?

The Windows XP installation routine allows you to delete a partition and to create a new partition in unpartitioned drive space. Doing so is the best and easiest way to 'wipe' the hard disk of the information on it. Windows won't allow you to format the system partition, and you need special tools to do so for an NTFS partition from a boot floppy. Using the install CD in this way is the most effective method of ensuring you start off fresh and clean!

What is a drive image?

It's like a 'photograph' of the contents of your hard drive, and can be used to restore everything on your PC in one procedure. Backing up files to CD does not do this, and Windows won't allow you to simply back up and then reload all the operating system files on your PC.

Taking a drive image allows to you reload Windows, all your programs and all your data files and special …

Hiya Susan.

I suspect that the little battery in that PC is dead, and it can no longer retain the information about what the bits and pieces in it are!

I'd suggest you drop it into a PC store for their technicians to check it, replace the battery if necessary, and configure it for you. That should cost you no more than a standard service fee, and will determine for you if that very old PC is worth persevering with or not.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Hiya susan,

There's one thing you're doing that's very, very wrong!

Using capitalisation for every word makes your comments very hard to read, and will cause many people to ignore what you say. Please only use capital letters where they are required.

After reading this post and checking the topic you've posted where you are asking for assistance, I found myself reaching for the headache tablets!

Cheers, and welcome to Daniweb!

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

This behaviour can occur if you install new catalyst drivers without first uninstalling the older drivers. I'd suggest uninstalling all traces of previous and current drivers, rebooting and then installing the latest drivers.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Sure that the Recovery CD is not scratched, dirty or otherwise damaged? That doesn't make a lot of sense, really. Even if the hard drive has been changed and more RAM installed the Recovery should still work OK.

Have any optical drives been added since the system was new? Add-in cards installed? Try disconnecting any such additions and redoing the Recovery?

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Did this behaviour occur immediately after the restore CD was used, or after you added more software and/or used the PC for a while?

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Could you indicate precisely what you mean by 'did a recovery'?

There are numerous procedures which people might describe in that way.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Bitorrent can be and is used for legitimate file distribution as well as for piracy. some musical artists etc distribute their product ONLY via Bitorrent.

The rule here exists primarily because we have no way to determine if the use is legitimate or not, and because the prdominance of people use it unlawfully.

That is a statement I've posted elsewhere in response to a similar query, alva.

At present the Forum rules clearly state that assistance with p2p programs and their use is not to be given here at DaniWeb. Until such time as that rule is changed or revoked, it remains in effect. Perhaps you might like to create a new topic in the 'Forum Feedback' section to discuss your quite valid and worthwhile concerns?

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Toulinwoek, if you need to wipe your system and revert back to what you had previously on a monthly basis then the 'methods' you use aren't working very well!

Keeping data on a separate partition is a sensible (and recommended) practice. But with security updates installed, security software (antivirus, firewall etc) installed and running, and sensible computing practices adopted there is no reason whatsoever why a Windows XP installation can't keep running perfectly well for years on end!

Hell, my own systems here haven't been reinstalled for over 2 years, are in excellent condition and perform just as well as when they were first installed. (Yes, that's been benchmarked!)

Reloading a drive image every 30 days is the equivalent of a format/fresh install on a monthly basis. That is extreme and definitely unwarranted!

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Oh wow! Windows Update is not a place to look for driver updates if you have a gaming PC. The graphics processor website and the reference drivers for the card is where it's at:

www.ati.com
www.nvidia.com

I'd be opening that PC case and checking that the fan on the video card is still working. If any included utitilies have been used to 'overclock' the video card I'd be setting it back to default speeds.

That image corruption has nothing to do with the monitor - it is from the display card. If you can't correct it by changing display drivers, and if visual inspection suggests that the card's cooling fan is working OK, then a format and fresh install will clearlt indicate if the display card is damaged or not. Is there any image corruption in the bootup POST screens or in the BIOS setup screens?

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Oh dear. Please do NOT use that. It is an already outdated and less secure version of firefox. It is NOT a different browser at all.
