Here's a reasonably good article you could read. I very much oversimplified it with my previous comment. The Athlon64 works differently again, because it doesn't really use a front side bus in the way earlier chips do. You still use clocks and multipliers with them, but they don't really connect via a front side bus because the memory controller itself is on the chip.

I personally pull that sort of stuff straight out of my head. Writing about IT technology is my line of work :)

Then configure your internet connection in one of those before you start making changes to your XP installation. Just plain commonsense to do so ;)

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

heh heh.....

Make sure you have your internet connection configured in another of those OS's before you start - just in case of unforseen problems :D

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

You have plenty of space available. In your situation I'd simply do what I advised earlier - delete the Windows folder on the XP partition and run the installation again. XP will install as if it's not there already, and your multi-boot should be retained without problems.

You'll likely need to do some setting up and reinstall your programs to recreate registry entries, but reinstall to the same folders as the programs were installed before and they will simply be overwritten. No extra space will be used.

Deleting the Windows folder gets rid of all the corruption that has occurred to stuff up the previous install. There should be no need to worry about deleting anything else.

BillyF, to tell the truth it sounds to me like you 'think' far too much. It also seems to me that you listen to people who give poor advice. Goodness knows what problems are on your machine as a result of acting on the poor advice you've heard.

What you are saying about "the .inf files is not updated" simply makes no sense to me. Goodness gracious, people who use Windows don't even have to know what an 'inf' file is. And the particular 'inf' file which relates to your modem installation won't become 'outdated' over time all by itself. If the modem worked before, and it doesn't now, it's not because you haven't updated an 'inf' file.

Broadly speaking, there are 3 main reasons a modem has stopped working:

* Changes you've made on the PC have 'screwed up' the modem installation. The best way to ensure that this is not the case is always going to be a format/clean install. If you've done any amount of fiddling about and trying to make changes based on technical advice you've not properly understood, this is the best approach to take.

* Some change to your telephone line service or cabling has occurred. Added telephone service 'features' can interfere with dial-up internet, and damage or changes to lines, plugs etc can effect it as well.

* The modem itself could have become faulty. This is the least likely cause of the problem.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

You're trying to make things too difficult by worrying about things which don't need to be worried about.

First step:

Is the drive full? If so, begin by freeing up some space by getting rid of some stuff on it. Unecessary data files, can be removed, programs uninstalled etc. You should NOT have the system drive full, no matter what Windows version you are using.

Give full details of your drive/partition structure please, and what you use each partition for.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Agreed. Running Windows XP in 256Mb of RAM works, but it's somewhat like trying to eat ice cream by sucking it up through a straw. You got a bit of a wait while the suction 'melts' the bit you're sucking on! :D

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Will the delete process recover all the space on the C drive

No, it'll simply show the setup routine that Windows XP is not present, and allow you to install an uncorrupted new installation of it.

some space is still taken on the drive ... what is the reason for that ?

All Windows versions reserve some space for the swap file etc. The space is not physically 'stolen', it's simply reserved so that you are stopped from filling the drive beyond what Windows will comfortably run in.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

I assume you have the different Windows versions on different drives or partitions? Boot to one of the other Windows versions, Delete the \Windows folder on the drive or partition you have XP installed to, and then reboot from the XP CD and run the installation again.

XP should run fine after you reinstall your drivers and programs, and your multiboot configuration should be retained.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

heh heh.....

Lokks like we're posting at the same time here.

What exact error messages are you getting please?

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Remember to exit from MacAffee before uninstalling it. If the resident shield is still running, the program won't be uninstalled correctly. Is you've tried to delete rather than uninstall it you might realistically be faced with a format and fresh install of everything to adequately clean up the mess.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

It's because you have a bus SPEED and a bus CLOCK which are serately describable things.

The bus CLOCK of the two chips are 200MHz and 133 MHz respectively, and the architectures of the two chips mean that 4 'bits' of data and 2 'bits' of data are concurrently handled in each read or write, to effectively give a bus SPEED of 800 MHz and 266 MHz respectively.

By the way, not all 1.8 GHz AMD chips use that bus clock and bus speed.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

If the installation manual is too complicated for you, then you DEFINITELY should not be considering building a system yourself!

I suspect you should get a prebuilt water cooling kit and pay a qualified tech to install it for you!

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Both Socket 754 and Socket 939 motherboards use DDR RAM. That's not a difference at all.

Socket 939 motherboards use more advanced chipsets than Socket 754, and would suit the tasks you wish to perform better, if you plan to build an Athlon64 system.

I know it's gonna be an uphill struggle because I can't be there all day to make sure she keeps her virus software up to date all the time ....

Be that as it may, but you should ensure that an adequate antivirus program is installed, set to automatically update and to perform continual background scanning. You should also ensure that adequate spyware detection/removal software is also installed and set to perform continual background scanning/blocking.

And you should ensure that a browser such as Mozilla, Firefox or Opera is installed and set as 'default', with the security settings adequately configured.

That way, you don't need to be there all day. :D

The entire rep thing is pretty useless. I've yet to see a site where it doesn't lead to strive and popularity contests to get the highest rep.

Both postcounts and rep systems are systems which people should take with a 'grain of salt'. High postcounts can indicate repeated 'chatty' style comments which are marginally helpful or even not helpful at all, and the 'rep' system is an 'honour based' one which has the potential for being misused.

By far the best way to indicate that someone has been helpful is to make a post indicating, 'Thank you, that sorted the problem out'. Such posts are visible to all, and are the best indication that a particular member is someone whose advice is particularly valuable.

Personally, I think the rep system is not a good one for monitoring abusive forum members. Giving negative rep to someone who is unusually rude, abrupt or even abusive does little. Reporting such posts to your moderators is a better method of dealing with that circumstance.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Printed magazine content is usually written many weeks before publication. WinFS will not even be fully implemented in Loghorn, according to more recent reports.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Best way:

Back up yout data. Format. Install fresh.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

LOL. You never read the earlier comment. The RAM upgrade is to trick it up prior to selling the thing!

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Refresh install of Windows 98. load it over the top of itself and redo any necessary updates.

Stop trying to 'graft' things to correct problems. Fix the causes of the problems instead ;)

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Which Windows version do you use. The error seems to suggest that a Windows XP only program is being used on a Windows 98 system. It my not mean that the Kernel32.dll file needs to be replaced - just that an illegal call to it has benn made.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

I'd like to know how much rep points you need to change your rep.

I see people with 5 and 6 little green boxes, does it take a lot to get that?

Yes, it does.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Yes. 256Mb more RAM will run XP a lot better and make it a sellable item.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

I'd have to agree with Thong Inspector. Extra RAM will help but it will not overcome the fact that it's an older and slower PC.

Balance the costs of extra SD-RAM against the costs of getting an entry-level 'upgrade box' to use. That's basically a new PC which does not come with monitor, keyoard, mouse or software. If you have a Windows CD you can load it, and use the bits 'n' pieces from your old system with it.

That's often the cheapest way to get a good upgrade, and now that new SD-RAM modules are not in common use and rather expensive, it's an alternative worth checking out!

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Poll has been closed for a while and now the topic is also. Nothing is being added to the discussion, really :(

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Check to see if your PC has a folder called \Windows\Options\Cabs which contains the windows installation files. If so, browse to that folder when you are asked for the CD.

If you've installed IE6 SP1 from a different CD (magazine cover disk perhaps?) pop that in the drive and browse to it.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Probably a conflict between the "HP Instant Support" and the security protection on the PC. Either enable the HP software to get through the firewall or disable the software from running - it's not needed anyway!

http://www.nocrash.com/ncbbs/msgs/3417.shtml

That discussion will tell you more details about it all.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Read the manual!

You'll find that for many USB printers you actually need to run the installation routine and then plug the printer in later, when prompted to do so. Plugging the printer in and turning it on before you install the drivers can stuff up the installation ;)

I'd suggest you disconnect the printer, uninstall any references to it in the Printer section of Control Panel AND in add/remove programs, and then install it from the installation CD.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

insults are part of debates.

Not on Daniweb they're not. Even a cursory read through the 'Forum Rules' section of the FAQ will quickly demonstrate this ;)

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Precisely, and when a debate is being conducted all a person needs do is be mindful of the language they use and the fact that personally directed insults and/or abuse shouldn't be traded.

Avoid value-laden terms and qualify or verify the points you make and no-one can be offended. If people are using the rep system to 'punish' people whose views they disagree with they should stop doing so!

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Same goes for dropped screws etc which have become lodged under the board.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

To dual boot you will need a partition or drive to install to. Do not try to install XP to the same partition as Win2000 if you want both.

Totally agree about XP Home and Pro.

The only real reason for choosing XP Pro over XP Home is if you wish to be part of a domain network or a simple network which has more than 5 PCs. In just about every other respect the two are identical in every way except default settings.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

I suspect it's a faulty or incompatible RAM module. I'd try borrowing another from somewhere and seeing if it works with different RAM in it.

Reset CMOS and try again first though.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

You'd think so, Anahita, but perhaps it's the 'Trapezoid' setting that is pulling the bottom of screen out of shape.

On the Menu, select the 'Geometry' function. That's the one which is a cross made from two ellipses. Then select the Trapezoid function, which is denoted by two vertical lines which are closer together at the top.

Minus will widen the bottom of the screen. Plus will widen the top of the screen. Try playing around with those, in combination with the horizontal and vertical size controls, and see if you can starighten the bottom of the display image out.

If not, I'm afraid I'm fresh out of ideas.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Hi Anahita

Post the link for that pdf file and someone here could read it and check for relevent geometry settings. (Me for example :))

Sounds like geometry to me. Maybe it can be corrected, maybe not.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Did you get that poem out of a book?

I lifted it from Australia under Construction, a website by Australian author Robert Treborlang.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

If it's happening at the BIOS screen I'd have to think the card is kaput!

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Nah, I'll post again. You won't 'get it', that's for sure!

You see, the fella(s) who speared that lone farmer would today be described as 'terrorists'. And their race is 'my mob'.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

This does:

1838

Dreadful is the killing
The killing of the race,
On whose lands we squatted
Stealing all their space.

When the First Fleet landed
It wasn't before long
Kooris became angry,
Things started to go wrong.

,,,

When the blacks retorted,
White hate began to grow,
With Governor Brisbane
Declaring open go.

Even Governor Brisbane
Declared an open go.

When the blacks retorted,
Whites forgot their reason
Even Governor Brisbane
Broadcast open season.

Using the excuse of
One lone farmer speared,
Morisset caused havoc,
Tribes entire disappeared.

The Faithfulls use every trick,
Including poisoned sheep and arsenic.

Under Munn fifty blacks end up shot,
And their bodies are all left to rot.

Governor Gipps appalled orders peace;
But settlers just laugh and crimes increase.

... Station hands havoc wreak, 46
massacre fifty blacks at Myall Creek.

Gipps enraged takes a stance,
Dowling tries station hands.

Child's lone rib evidence,
whites to hang for offence.

Huge outcry sweeps the land,
Darlinghurst rescue planned,

Governor thwarts the band,
blacks still killed, underhand.

- Robert Treborlang

You've mentioned 512Mb of RAM. Is that 2 x 256Mb modules? If so are they the same brand or different modules?

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Open 'My Computer'. Right-click on the drive and choose 'Properties'.

You'll find 'Error checking' on the Tools tab.

That's the easiest way :)

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

I think we need to be careful about generalising too far, and be cautious to qualify the statements we make.

Whilst I'd hold some sympathy with the view you've expressed in light of current global issues, and while I'd be mindful that in years gone by the exporting of Christian 'missionaries' to other countries and cultures has historically had a MUCH greater Global impact than the current situation of spasmodic Islamic extremism, I'd also have to accept the following:

* Such things are NOT descriptive of the Islamic world. Most followers of that faith do not endorse such activities.
* Such things are NOT necessarily formally or surreptitiously endorsed by Islamic nations. They are generally the acts of individuals within those nations.
* The 'Western world' has its own 'sins', and the global impact of those is also horrendous.

We need to be careful how our comments are worded ;)

Edit: And while terrorism and genocide are both horrendous things, they are definitely very different ones.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

When my pursuit of understanding in relation to PCs takes me to detailed technical 'white papers' related to physics, electronics and other very specialised fields of activity. From a technical article I wrote a while back, about extreme cooling tech and in response to a reader:

Ooookkkayyyyy!

Hmmmmmmm

I’ll take your word for it that your summation of that article is a correct one, Tim, because it made my eyes bleed trying to read it.

:D

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

I will not stand for ANYBODY getting personal and inflammatory in discussions here. When duscussions relate to current affairs I would request that EVERYBODY be cautious in what they post. You have time to critically review your comments before pressing the 'Submit' button!

.If you want to complain anymore about my views on terrorist supporting people, or countrys..PM me.

The views were not 'complained about. One small item was challenged, , in that there is a distinction between terrorism and genocide. If any member here is unable to involve themselves in topical discussion without taking personal affront at the views and comments of others, and unable to make comment themselves without allowing themselves to become heated and inflammatory, then perhaps they should consider refraining from making comment. Personally directed outbursts and attacks WILL attract administrative attention, and that attention will be regardless of the topic subject matter and regardless of what 'side of the fence' someone sits on!

Keep it mature, reasoned and friendly in discussions here please, because we do not want Daniweb to be a place for heated and personal arguments.

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

If people want to have a private discussion about an unrelated topic, please do so via PM. If people wish to discuss a clearly unrelated topic, please do so in a thread of its own.

Let's get back to discussing Software Piracy shall we?

Catweazle 140 Grandad Team Colleague

Both of those cards are a significant downgrade compared with the Ti4200. If you are going to replace the card it is not a good idea to purchase one which is less powerful.

I would consider a format/reinstall before deciding to replace the card. It could also be a software corruption (drivers perhaps?) problem, and I'd want to be sure to eliminate that possivility before spending money. Format and clean install is the ONLY way to positively eliminate software causes.
