I am having a problem with the resolution of my suse. I just installed it and everything seemed to be installed correctly. I reboot my machine and went through grub and chose the suse linux. At first, the splash screen, looked fine. Then it got to the login page, and it was all messed up, way out of proportion, but I could still login, even though I couldn't really see what I was doing b/c everything was so enlarged. When it logged in it still stayed the same. I tried fixing it by changing the background settings but I couldn't even see what I was doing. I can open my terminal though and see what I am writing. Does anybody know how to fix this? or should I try reinstalling it?
Thanks

what resolution should you have?

if you go into (off the top of my head... not used SuSE for a while!) YaST, then under one of the options (hardware, i think) should be Display/Graphics/Monitor or something of the sort.

That should launch SAX2 which is has options to change your resolution settings.

My internet is working fine. Except that I can't sign into any .net passport related site. I can sign into MSN explorer and check my emails but when I try to sign into MSN Messenger it sais the service is temporarily unavailable. At first I could not sign into MSN Explorer at all but then I did this step
"try this ,START>RUN> then type in box.. regsvr32 softpub.dll"
I read about from another thread, so my problem is half fixed, still in need of some help.

is all your software up to date? can you sign into msn passport sites using different browsers?

sorry - dunno what the problem is but i'd explore those avenues first so you can narrow down the problem

I ran Fedora Core 4/Gnome for ages on my old machine (800Mhz Athlon w/ 512mb RAM)

A stick of 512MB RAM is very cheap ($44 according to Froogle!) and I'd imagine you could run pretty much any recent distro on your computer, both Gnome and KDE seem to be running faster and faster each release.

My choice of distro these days is Ubuntu, 1 cd for the basics (FC has 5) and then you can use synaptic to get the programs you actually want.

What is the limit on how many records you can have in a table in Oracle? It must have a limit.

Also, has anyone ever benchmarked Oracle on sorting records... say 1,000,000 records of a small record size, just 2 or 3 fields?
:cheesy:

I doubt Oracle will limit the number of tuples in a table; therefore it's limit is goverened by the amount of disk space you have

if you plug a phone into that socket do you get a dial tone?

if this works its either your computer or your cable.

if you use another cable (if you have a spare) between your modem and phone socket does it work?

if it does its your cable at fault

if you just dial with your computer ( double click My Computer, double click the new folder called Dial-Up Networking, double click on Make New Connection ) does it work?

if it doesn't i dunno whats wrong. i doubt you'll get this far

i bet what happened is you came from another site that had a certificate your browser trusted, then to come to daniweb you cleared everything after the https:// but didnt notice there was an 's' and typed daniweb.com on the end

the fact the certificate is not trusted just means that you don't have their certificate in your list of trusted ones, not that it is untrustable etc - you just have to import the cert if you decide to trust the company

if you use firefox it will display secure sites (https) as having a yellow address bar (ie only puts a small padlock on teh status bar)

Timestamps are a good way to keep track for versions but I hate the way things could mess up with timestamps.

how could things mess up with timestamps?

i dont actually use the timestamp for versioning more for auditing; its the version number that keeps track of the revision of the document

yeah - my editor was set to basic in settings. still though if i do something like this:

[tex]\[{ \frac {d}{dx}} \ arctan(\sin({x}^{2}))=-2\,{ \frac { \cos({x}^{2})x}{-2+\left ( \cos({x}^{2}) \right )^{2}}}\][/tex]

the code looks correct (to me!) but i still get <br /> tags unless i put it all in a block.

pty 882 Posting Pro

hi - i know this is a bit late and you've probably sorted out this issue

my instinct would be to have a documents table and a revisions table

documents: id, title, summary.

revisions: id, document_id, revision_number, file_location, uploaded_by, uploaded_ts...

so when you add a new document, for example holiday_form.pdf, a new document tuple is added and a version 1 (or whatever) revision is added.

you could create a folder per document and store the revisions - i've done this in the past by naming the revisions:
<document_name>_v<revision_number>.pdf

pty 882 Posting Pro

never seen this done anywhere else. such a good idea - only slight problem seems to be that a load of <br/> tags appear - think this is due to the behaviour of the text box/submission?

you assume that one person will order a quantity of one book on one order.

a better way to do it would be to have multiple order lines belonging to one order; this would allow a customer to make an order for multiple books at once

Hello I wanted to compete with myspace.com because they are monopolizing the computing industry, and I am indeed jealous.
I wanted to know if anyone here knows a lot about database programming, and can help me learn how to program something that has the looks and feels of myspace in its entirety. I know this is a lot to ask for, but I thought I might just go on and ask, because I have nothing to lose, and I do believe someone is out there who can help me. I am a very good marketer and I know I can take myspace.com down the drain if I get help from the right person.

So basically I wanted to know if someone can instruct/teach/show me me over Aol Instant Messenger, My screen name is: [CHINCHASTE]

i dont use SQL Server much these days, but is there not a isNumber() or isNumeric() function?

If there isn't im sure writing your own wouldnt be that difficult. Just attempt to cast a varchar as a number and if it succeeds its a number. If it doesnt, it aint.

The 'real' solution to this is to fix your database so that text data is stored in char/varchar fields and numeric data is stored in the appropriate numeric type.

Would anyone know, if it is possible to change the alphablend value of a form, to the number that the user types into the edit box, while the program is running? (or if not by an edit box, by some other means).

Ok Elohir, these are my answers,

1) How do you want to be notified... e-mail? pop-up window? Text mail to your phone?
I woluld like to send email

2) How do you want this triggered? In other words, Do you want the date check to run at 12AM every day? Or would you rather it only run when you log on to your workstation?
I want to date check to run at 12AM every day if I log or not

3) What machine is going to trigger it... the SQL server or your workstation? (Or do you have only one machine that is always on?) If you run it on the server, what do you want it to do with your notification if your workstation is not online (not an issue if you are emailing the notice)?
My project is webbased project I use web server and the sql server

i think the best way to tackle this is to make a stored proc that does the check and put the details of the birthday people in a temp table, once you've got them all use xp_sendmail to send the email.

then in enterprise manager find 'jobs' (in management|sql server agent) and make a job that is run once per night and have it execute your stored proc

you could do this by just puttin the body of your stored proc in the job but its neater to do it that way

pty 882 Posting Pro

that would work if

a) the values were in another table

b) and they werent in a comma delimited list as per the original question :)

pty 882 Posting Pro

no problem, but with your solution i don't understand why you use an if..else statement here

if @JobRole <> '%'
begin
Select NoOfVacancies,JobRole from JobVacancy where JobRole LIKE @JobRole+ '%'
end
else
begin
Select NoOfVacancies,JobRole from JobVacancy where (JobRole LIKE @JobRole+ '%' OR JobRole is null)
end

im sure you'd get the same result by just saying

select NoOfVacancies, JobRole
from JobVacancy
where JobRole like @JobRole + '%'
or JobRole is null

if @JobRole is '%' your statement would say '..where JobRole like '%%' which is the same as saying where JobRole like '%'; both solutions would work but I think you may be overcomplicating slightly.

on the right track though :)

I run MS SQL 2000, database is growing and my concern is the hard drive will soon run out of disk space. i wonder if i can add a new hard drive and tell SQL there is more space. my question is how i can combine the two hard disks and make SQL thinks it is the same disk. any input or help would be appricated.

I don't think you need to implement raid to solve this issue (it would do, albeit expensively), adding a new hard disk and creating new filegroups on it would be sufficient. Creating file groups and allocating resources to them requires a good understanding of your database structure.

this part sounds strange to me:

Comp.Caption:='Computer Guesses ' + b;
if b<>a then
Res.Caption:='Wrong';
if b > a then
d:=Inputbox('User Input','Is it less or more?','less');
if b=a then
Res.Caption:='Right'

surely the computer's guess can either be correct, lower or higher.

if a = b then
  //snip
else if a > b then
  //snip
else if a < b then
  //snip

however as you know if its lower or higher why ask the user? To get user input for this making a form with 'higher'/'lower' buttons on it may be the best solution

plus it may be worth keeping a note of the closest high and low incorrect guesses; then you can work within the range so guessing the number doesnt take all day :)

this is probably due to the database becoming corrupted yesterday and being restored from a backup.

i doubt you'll get them back, obviously that depends on the extent of the corruption to the database and how kind the admins are feeling :)

hi - depending on the version of delphi you have, the indy components may be installed. if not you can get em from their site. the indy (internet direct) suite is a set of components that allow you to do network stuff, they include a ftp server component and an ftp client component. both are fairly straightforward to use and a quick google (or search on koders.com) will probably uncover some tutorials/snippets

How do i insert multiple rows in database.
for example: I have 3 list:
list1: a1,a2,a3,a4
list2: b1,b2,b3,b4
list3: c1,c2,c3,c4

I want to insert a1,b1,c1 in 1st row. a2,b2,c2 in 2nd row,...
How do I write one sql insert statement to do that?

i'd imagine making a stored procedure to deal with the inserts would be the easiest way.

you can modify this sp to scroll through the list and put the whole lot of your list into variables then just insert 'em.

hope this helps

Hi there,
I need help :o ... I have to solve the following task, a person buys goods and everytime the person receives change. The aim is that the person has as few as possible coins in its wallet. The person has an unlimited value of one dollar coins. And at the beginning 5 1 cent coint, 5 2 cent coins, 5 5 cent coins, 5 10 cent coins, 5 20 cent coins and 5 fifty cent coins in his wallet. I shall simulate as many times as the programs user wants an amount the person has to pay (between 0.05$ and 30.00$). The program shall return which coins I shall give to the cashier (for each amount). The cashier always gives as few small change as possible. The person has everytime enough 1$-coins (or notes) and only wants to have as few 1cent,2cent,5cent,10cent,20cent,50cent coins as possible in his wallet. I don’t really know how I shall solve that I would be very nice if you try to help me…
It should be programmed with Delphi (5or7)

your description confused me, but would it not make sense to loop through each coin in descending order increasing the quantity until the value is the coin's value less than the total? so for example if you want £3.51 change it will loop through 3 £1 coins, 1 50p, 0 20p, 0 10p, 0 5p, 0 2p and 1 1p
