Whenever I am trying to assess the popularity of a topic, I may go to YouTube or Facebook to see if I find any user generated content on it. So other than using social media for this type of research, how else have you used it for gathering insights?

It now seems that there is a new app or tool on social media that will help resolve everyday's communication and issues. I have seen different communities rising up every day, especially when I read killer startup or silicon alley. So other than us still stuck brushing our teeth, what other activity has social media had no effect?

Almost all the businesses I know what to create a Facebook page but I do wonder, what happens next? Does the business actually measure the results of having the Facebook Page, both on Facebook and ROI seen through additional business transactions or sales?
Did the business use a third party app to measure results or was Facebook Insights enough?

I totally agree with you Marketing Rob. I have also been at events where everyone there is a social media "guru" or "visionary" and I felt I was the only non-Guru in the room.

I just read on a blog that Real CEOs dont send email holiday cards. As a CEO of my own company, I prefer to send gift packages but I do argue with the blogger that emails do take more than 3 seconds to create it.

With the increase of smart phones, getting a mobile site for a business may be the next smart option. From a social media angle, having a mobile site may be more luring for the tweeters to view it on their smart phone. So when you are creating a mobile site, what other things do you keep in mind to make it more enticable for the Tweeters and FB updates?

Believe it or not, many visitors to YouTube or Myspace are actually tapping those sites to listen music. Yup, rather than going to Pandora or buying the song on iTunes, visitors are using YouTube as a music radio stop. I know I sometimes do it while I know some co-workers who often do this. So what do you think about this? Are you one of them?

The issue is that there is already so much surveillance going on - both from the private and public sectors - that the main issue is data integration and dissemination. Look - Google is a main data depot.
To your point - Marketing Rob - if we go back to penmanship - it will hurt lots of people's eyes since I dont think younger generations have good handwriting.

Back even a few years ago, people sent christmas cards. Now, including me, I have sent an e-card, happy text, or left a holiday greeting on social media communities. So what do you think? Earlier last year, I researched on Web 3.0 and there was a wiki page stating that web 3.0 dealt with the integration of databases/BI/and semantics. But now it seems that web 3.0 may lead to some other form of technology, only time will tell.

In todays age, it is important to monitor your reputation. I personally do it be running Google Alerts and searching on my name on google and various search engines. What about you? How do you monitor your online reputation?

Yes, there are countless number of social media tools but none were able to give me just the answer to:
1. how many threads on "topic a"
2. how many original posts on topic a?
3. how many responses on topic a?

Perhaps Radian6 can give me these metrics but I used other tools and it did not. It gives me an arbitrary score but it means nothing outside that tool. Does anyone know of any tool that can easily gives these metrics?

From a data perspective, I can just imagine a new dimension of data collected from Google's new offering.

There are two sides here:
1. Google is becoming the ultimate datawarehouse of digital behavior
2. People will either fight against Google or just swim with it and accept Google as the big mighty one.

I just read a nifty new project that Google is testing out - Google Goggles - you take a picture and ask Google what it is. I like the semantic aspect of it.

As we know, Facebook and many other online sites collect our personal and site behavior for behavioral targeting. Think of it as free information exchange. So if Facebook or another online community you belong to allows you to opt out, would you do it?

I read on CNN - an article written by Mashable's Peter C - that one of his predictions for 2010 is word cloud becomes more prominent. Though I do see its relevance and standing, I dont see it as often as before on blogs and sites. Perhaps it is being incorporated on a back-end. What do you think? Have you used word cloud on the back end of your online community?

Companies value this type of data while the general consumer does not realize that they generate a wealth of actionable data points. I remember years ago I read that Yahoo not only stored your password but they have the right to use your password. It was in a tiny print but it raised my concern radar back then.

CNN just released an article written by Pete from Mashable in regards to the future of the web for 2010, similar to the topic of this thread. Basically, he mentions cloud technology and how there will be no more GPS devices.

influence, engagement, advocacy, sentiment, ROI, transparency, authentic and trust.

I totally agree. I did that a few years ago - shopping on Black Friday and I truly did not see any savings nor sales. I do actually see it the day before thanksgiving like at Loehmann's this year.

There is all this fuss about Cyber Monday. The holiday itself was officially coined and in circulation by 2005 after the Retail Society reviewed previous year data. I know I shopped since I found a good deal on overstock but most of the other sites I visited, I did not see much deal. I thought it was only hype. So what do you think? Did you take advantage of these sales?

I noticed that my gmail login allows me to use other google appls and search engine but it also records everything. So an idea came to my mind - do you think that Google can easily search a user and generate a list of search terms the user have visited?

Technology have increased the reach of communication for both personal and professional reasons. Though, I would not like a new tool that will alert me of my tweets or facebook updates while at the bathroom.
