Besides RAM upgrade, we can use "msconfig" from "RUN" and deseclect all "startup" options and reboot PC.
After the PC boots to the desktop, check the reponse speed, if everything is faster, go back to msconfig and select the options one at a time and reboot each time.

This can help find out which app causing the slow performance.

hpoe this helps!

OP already stated she has 128MB RAM which is very low which makes her pc barely to run even without any third-party program running on background.

But I agree.. If RAM is sufficient but pc still has slow bootup, disable any program on startup that isn't that useful.

flagstar 111 Practically a Master Poster

Maybe you just happen to set it with 'Num Lock' enable automatically. Set it to disable again with Fn + NumLock on your laptop keyboard.

That's why I want to rule out any possible unrelated running process and search only that was started.

I know fake AV has this kind of characteristics:
- Will autorun even when all programs are disable on startup
- Block any .exe files and tell it's dangerous (including task manager)
- Redirect websites to other possible infected websites when browsing
- Blocks AV before/after AV can even start
- Usually reside in %windir%\WINDOWS or %windir%\WINDOWS\system32 and even temp folder

I once happen to handle this case and what I do is do the things I mention, then when windows boot up, I quickly start task manager and search for the possible harmful startup and disable it. i got at most 10 seconds before the virus close task manager on it's own. Then I can start MBAM on normal mode and able to detect and delete it.

Maybe this one is too tough for the poster, so please rule this out... I just giving out some ideas to thwart this virus out.

flagstar 111 Practically a Master Poster

I may not be helping much here...

You can try to disabling all startup program in msconfig and select 'Load basic devices and drivers only'. It may stop the fake AV from starting up (usually this won't do it)

If fail, then post a new dds log to find out the real culprit that starting up.

Maybe you just hit the 4 partition limit for primary partition.
Check 'Disk Management' again to make sure. I'm suppose it's going to be like this

Partition #1 - System Reserve (100 MB)
Partition #2 - Windows
Partition #3 - New Partition
Partition #4 - Recovery Partition (usually hidden)

Thanks for reply. C:\windows\system32\drivers would be 25 - 30 mb, right. Just wanted to make sure got right folder.
Would prefer reformat/reinstall XP Pro on 2nd PC I have for practice. If I screw up on this one, I've lost WEB contact.
2nd PC has HP XP Home partition (don't like Home) and HP Recovery partition. Save System32 drivers, right? Reformat whole HD, install XP Pro, reinstall drivers ? Add Partition Magic and DOS partitions like 1st PC, install DSL modem, etc., then go back and reformat/reinstall XP Pro on 1st PC. So, when done, both are same. Then, hope to set up LAN.
All this will have to wait as I have to check into hospital for some surgery 9am Monday. Hope recovery won't be too long.
Regards

Yes, the driver folder is the right one, back it up first for later use...
Each computer has different system/setting/partition so you may encounter some problem reformat another computer but it's okay if you would like to do this for practice.

If you mean other data inside C: partition, you can also back it up to external drive example pendrive, external HDD etc or other unused available drive. That way you won't lose any valuable data during reformatting.

It would be easier to use Recovery Partition if your computer have one... Less hassle and also complete OEM original version right out-of-the-box setting. You don't actually need partition magic and DOS partition since you won't …

I mean from my last post, did you have previous boot image version (GRUB) for your Mint? Sometimes new GRUB update mess up some apps on your system so you might want to check it first...

Well you could try Ubuntu since it was more stable than Mint. It could solve your initial problem...
I'm not using Mint so I don't know if it works differently from normal Linux OS...

I'm still using 10.04 for their Long Term Support (LTS) so if anything's wrong they can fix it. 10.10 is good too and slightly better than 10.04 in term of graphics.

Have you tried Combofix to get rid of the nasty beast? Much recommended.

ComboFix should not be used without any proper guidance. Wrong setup could cost you another reinstall of windows. Surely you don't want that... Even though it was recommended, it's better to avoid using it.

Hi, welcome to DaniWeb.

Say your XP is a mess and you want to reformat I assume...

You have 3 partition and you want to reformat XP partition only. XP need at least 2-4GB to run so the other two partition which has less than that (55MB and 300MB) can be ignore.

Also please mark your partition with correct drive letter. Let's say your XP is in C so write it down along with drive letter for each partition. This is for future reference and to avoid reformat the wrong partition.

Also please backup this folder 'Driver' in the directory below just in case

%windir%\system32\Driver
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Driver

You said you have XP OEM cd so first insert your OEM cd to cd/dvd drive and boot from it. (You might need to set boot from cd first from bios), press any key when the line 'Press any key to boot' show up. Let it run till the process stop by itself

Tab 'Enter' to enter XP installation. Now it'll show you list of partition you need to format. Just select the NTFS partition and press 'enter' to the next screen (be careful with selecting partition to format, you may formatted the wrong partition). Select 'Format NTFS (Quick)' and press 'Enter' again. Now it'll begin installing Windows XP to the chosen partition you set.

It'll restart by itself but you don't need to do anything and don't remove OEM cd just yet. It'll begin another process afterwards …

I'm not sure about Norton product these days because I too once use Norton but older version and hate to say, it allow some virus to enter my pc and worst, it blocked some program that's not even a virus to begin with...

McAfee... havne't try yet but so far the best out of three AV you want us to compare...

Hey guys thanks for the response! I don't have much access to the web so I apologize for not responding sooner.

I cannot run cmd commands as those also open as text files. I am trying malwarebytes now and will post if it works or not. But I don't really have my hopes up since I already tried removing it with my antivirus. I will remove it manually.

I will try the registry fix now.

Well if you can't access any exe files normally and can't run cmd, you can boot into safe mode with command prompt. If you're lucky, you might get an open command prompt running and you can input any key that is needed to repair your problem...

I'm not very good with using cmd so I can't give any good tips to repair your computer... Use this command if you have a windows xp cd

sfc /scannow

Also have you try to open exe files in safe mode and/or in different account?

Might be you got a dead mobo... or power supply...

Even if all the fans and light are working doesn't mean power supply is okay... It may be at fault too...

Looks like most further step were already taken and I've no ideas to fix your pc momentarily...

Motherboard (MOBO) - Unknown
Power Supply Unit - Works but may not supply enough power to juice mobo
HDD - Assumed that it's fine
RAM - Same as above
VGA monitor - Also same

If you have a spare motherboard, might as well test with that and see if it works... If not, you might need to replace your mobo i'm afraid...

If you're going to make a learning video, you must have a device that can record video like mobile phone video, video cam etc. any will do. If you do not have this, there's another method but it'll take a huge patience...

Search in google for desired software you want to make a video and apply into your project. I warned you, this step will take a long time rather than taking your own video...

How big is the size of your USB drive?

Make sure you set it in default state

Capacity: depends
File System: FAT32 is the most recommended one but try exFAT as well if it's available
Allocation Unit Size: Set it to default
Volume Lable: anything you might want to name it
Check 'Quick Format'

might as well try to pull RAM out and check if your mobo is beeping.

If it's beeping for 3 times, it's RAM problem.

or try this... this kinda hard for starters

remove all connection, cables, HDD, RAM, CD/DVD Drive from your mobo and just left with power supply cable and power switch wire intact. Plug in back VGA cable in the back side and boot.

Check if it does make any differences...
