Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

Your VGA is fried. You need to replace the motherboard.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

I say 99% it's mobo.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

Bare this in mind:
SATA cables are EXTREMELY sensitive to a human touch (bare metal parts), so if you're not gonna use them, DON'T remove the wrapping.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

I agree.. for $120 you can get much better performance-wise motherboard, but it wouldn't match your CPU and RAM.

Anyway, that is really good price, and reviews for that motherboard are promising, so if your CPU and other parts are OK, I say grab one.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

If your RAM fits, I say go for it.

Btw, what is the price? Only price I managed to dig up is $125 which was in 2004...

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

Try this trick. It worked for me once when my OS got corrupt registry:

Disable HD in BIOS and boot from CD.

Otherwise, it would freeze when the setup program would check for installed windows...

This is a long shot (different error messages/behaviour), but it is worth a try.

(I still think that you should toggle advanced power management settings in BIOS)

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

Well, I think that this would have to do.

If it doesn't, well.. then you have every right to demand some customer support form Cannon.

Regarding the firewire suspitions.. I'm not too sure there. If I was you, I would try different PCs (and different IEEE 1394 controllers) to rule out hardware or driver incompatibility. Many motherboards (includin mine) have intergrated firewire controller, so that won't be too difficult to test.

If it works on different machine, then it just might be firewire controller that is giving you trouble.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

Have you tried connecting via USB? Maybe it is not just for printing photos.

This Canon software you mentioned, is it something you got with that camera, or is it something you downloaded?

What model is it?

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

Don't you have to set the camera to work with PC? Every camera I've delt with senses the connection and prompts for either printing the photos or "PC mode" (which is pretty much USB stick-like behaviour).

.. and disregard the IRQs.. they are set automatically by XP and those settings override the BIOS settings.. and there is IRQ-sharing technology that makes IRQ conflicts a thing of a past...

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

Is your warranty valid?

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

I doubt it, because today's laptops usually don't have floppy drives, while XP INSISTS on floppy drive (?) when it comes to f6 drivers.. That part of MS-thinking I will never understand.

Only chance for getting those drivers to work is by slipstreaming Setup CD.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

is the hard drive a sata? if it is you may need to load the drivers while the windows cd is starting (watch the bottom of the screen for something like 'press F3 to load third party sata/raid drivers')... not sure what F key but it will tell you.

It's F6.

That's why they're popularly called f6 drivers.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

There should be "Quick POST" setting in your BIOS.

You should disable it to see if any POST error messages will shed some light on your case.

Also, if possible, look into event logs (part of administrative tools) to see if there are any error messages or warnings.

While you're at it, check the hardware manager for yellow exclamation marks.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

I wasn't paying attention.... sorry.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

DDR2 technology is 2-3 years old (sales-wize) and is in no way compatible with your CPU. Your only hope of getting compatible motherboard for that CPU is 2nd hand market.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

That will only worsen the problem... FIXBOOT from Windows XP Setup CD + Vista installed = corrupt disk (well, in this case corrupt x2)

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

There are tools that can retrieve your product key, but they are shady stuff.

The only one that I've managed to find that DOESN'T seem to be malware is badly uploaded. (you'll need to use some hex editor to trim the 0's in the file header)

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

a) Make sure you're connecting it to Line-in jack (not mic). Also make sure, if you are using internal connectors, that you're not connecting it to CD Audio in nor aux in.

b) Use retail cables. (not some lose wires)

c) If possible, redirect audio to on-board sound card via software or drivers.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

Some old BIOSes have disk recognition utility which needs to be run before HD can be set or used in boot sequence.

You should post your motherboard model.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

Another board= another motherboard.

If you need to replace the motherboard (and you obviously do) with the warranty expired, you might want another laptop altogether, considering the price of the motherboard. That is, IF it is available at all.

You might want to take the laptop to repairshop and confirm the failed motherboard (and learn the price for the repairs), but that alone might come with a price, depending on shop's policy.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

That is "service host". It is not a svchost.exe that is taking 100% of your CPU time, but one of the services that are running.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

Double-click your right mouse button on an empty screen. (Switch from left-handed to right-handed controls and vice-versa)

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

Try hitting Esc button when mobo logo comes. It will show you text-mode screen that goes on "behind the scene". You might have some error messages there that you're not aware of.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

Bad news.

The beepcode you described says "One of the chips on your motherboard is not functioning. You'll likely need to get another board."

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

Usually, the falshing program gives you option to save your current BIOS, and BIOS providers usually keep all BIOS versions.

USB sticks are pretty much the same as HDs when it comes to booting. However, having some kind of OS on them, that's a bit tricky. You can learn more here.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

Ohhh. You didn't start the thread..

Is the DVD disc EMPTY (as, the available capacity stays unchanged) after "writing" or is it just not readable? Use DiscInfo tool to check the capacity after burning attempt.

"PMA update failure" is usually media-related, which translates: your burner can't write to the DVD you put in.

Try using Traxdata or Verbatim DVDs. 99.999% of burners will work with those.

Also, updating drive's firmware might solve your problem. Firmware updates usually adds more DVD media on the "can write" list.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

Definitely try updating BIOS.

If that doesn't work, then try downgrading BIOS to a lower version than it is now.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

Delete all partitions and create a new one that engulfs the whole drive.

.. that is, if you don't mind losing complete data on it.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

You need to be little more specific:

- model
- exact beepcode (like, 1 long 3 short beeps

There are tools that remove the password protection from PDF files.
PDF Password cracker is one of them.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

Seems to me like the VGA chip isn't working well. (Read: motherboard).

That is most likely the very source of heat you felt... and first to go from overheating.

Here you can find all the XP drivers you need for your laptop.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

Here you can hear some of the failing drive sounds.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

Double-click "my computer"
Right-click the drive in question
Click "Properties"
Select "AutoPlay" tab
Click "Prompt me each time to choose an action"
Click "OK"

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

I have no idea if it was "normal"..

If you have another machine handy, then you can use it to test the RAM from your machine. That way you'll know if the RAM got fried as well as mobo (yup, it's mobo by my judgment)

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

Try booting with no RAM at all. Maybe, if the mobo/BIOS designers designed it that way, you'll get some functionality back. BIOS, for one. If you do, you'll get a chance to see if your mobo behaves "normally" without any RAM. That would suggest that RAM got fried too.

Or maybe you'll get couple of beeps and nothing more.

In any case, you should try booting with some known-good RAM.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

Ok, you lost me here.
a) Why is this marked as solved?
b) You tried to make a DVD Image or burn one to DVD?

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

Nero uses its own aspi layer, so installing adaptec one won't solve your problem. Your problem is most likely faulty drive (or power supply) or corrupt Nero aspi layer. I suggest reinstalling Nero.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

Try reseating the RAM, or booting with one stick.

Also, try clearing the CMOS.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

I say, 6.9 V instead of 5 is too high.

What you need to check are CPU and RAM voltages. They must not be THAT much higher.

HWMonitor would be a suitable tool for you.

If you don't know what are the nominal values, check your BIOS settings.

A guy sits in his kitchen at 3 AM staring at the table and looking like he's about to burst into tears.
His wife comes in and finds him there.

She asks him: "What's wrong, dear?"
He replies: "Nothing, I was just thinking..."

Curios, she asks: "What are you thinking about that makes you look so sad?"

He takes a deep breath and starts taking..

- Remember the night we first made love?

- Yes.

- Remember that your dad caught us in the middle of it?

- Yes.

- Remember what he said to me?

- Yes, he said "Now you have to marry my daughter."

- Remember what else he said?

- Yes.. said that, him being a county judge, he would've charged you with rape and thrown you in the jail for 20 years, unless you married me.

He takes a moment and says:
"Today I would be walking out of that jail..."

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

What burning software are you using? (either of you)
If it is nero, maybe you left the "simulate" checkbox checked.

Try fixing the ASPI layer.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

Google it.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

One little thing:

BIOS monitors the fans, and if the fans aren't spinning, then the BIOS gives you a warning during POST. If there's no POST, then the BIOS hasn't kicked in. In other words, the fan isn't a direct cause.

What you could be having there is PSU protection. Most PSUs have shorting protection that cuts off all power. That can be easily triggered by a lose wire touching a casing.

I'm not sure how to reset that kind of protection on laptops.. My best guess is to plug out the mains and remove the battery.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

There usually is a swithch in BIOS for on-board video, or selection between PCI/E (or AGP) and PCI videocard.

If you have plugged in a PCI/E card, then you need a VGA display (for visual feedback) and set PCI/E card to be primary. That should do it.

Chaky 191 Posting Virtuoso

I have realtec too (intergrated) and only problems I had (not related to SP3) was that nVidia chipset drivers tended to overwrite the realtec drivers. nVidia's drivers worked too, but without 3d hardware acceleration was available in various games.

It is running now with SP3 without any problems.

(this is a copy-paste from this)

Try this first:
Click Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
Look for the following two items: Realtek* High Definition Audio Driver and High Definition Audio driver Package - KB888111.
If these items are listed in Add/Remove programs, remove them.
Restart Windows.
Download the latest audio driver for your desktop board from Download Center.
Double-click the filename to extract the files.
Go to the folder where the files have been extracted and browse to the \HDAQFE\xpsp2\us\ folder or the \MSHDQFE\Win2K_XP\us\ folder. (The name of this folder depends on your desktop board model.)
Double-click the file kb888111xpsp2.exe to install the High Definition Audio Driver Package.
Restart Windows.
Install the audio driver.

If the above steps do not resolve the problem, try reinstalling Windows as follows:

Disable audio in BIOS before the installing Windows:
During boot, enter the BIOS setup by pressing F2.
Disable audio on the Advanced > Peripheral Configuration menu.
Press F10 to Save and Exit.
Install Windows.
Install the latest Service Pack for your version of Windows.
Install the Intel® Chipset Software Installation Utility (INF Utility).
Install all of rest of the latest drivers for your board, EXCEPT the audio driver.
Re-enable audio in BIOS:
During boot, enter the BIOS setup by pressing F2.
Enable audio on the Advanced > Peripheral Configuration menu.
Press F10 to Save …
