I got an Emachine Emonster600 computer from my cousin, because he's trying to get rid of some of his old computers. Well, I got it working originally, except for the fact that when I gave it power (in this case, just plugging the computer into the wall), it would start running, but no graphics (It has an AGP card).
Well, I waited about 5 minutes and it would shut off and all would be well. Recently, I had swapped video cards, because I had a 32meg card in it, and I didn't need that much performance, so I put in a 16mb video card from my Pentium 2. I also changed the hard drive to a different one.
However, now when I plug it in, I get power, but no graphics. And it won't shut off like it did before. When I plugged in a PS/2 keyboard, the NumLock key was flashing, and not a solid light.
Could this be a power supply issue? I tried removing the NIC card, CD-ROM, and Floppy Drive, and a stick of ram.
Or could this system have a partially dead mobo?
Any help would be appriciated.
I agree with everybody else about the overheating. When I got my laptop (I got it used from a friend), I had popped out the keyboard and removed many of the components and cleaned it out. Has been working fine since.
My laptop gets a little under 2 hours of battery, which is the Dell C600. However, I've used a notebook that get's about 6 hours of battery life, and one that got 8 hours of battery life. If your want to increase your battery life, you probably want to add additional batteries. Also, I use Ubuntu, so I get a little less battery life.
I do use Opera and Firefox mostly. However, right now I'm using IE7 because I just installed XP and haven't had enough time to finish installing all of my software.
Can I ask why it needs to have such a high refresh rate?
I am looking for a co-host to my podcast (which isn't existant, yet). Here's a short list of requirements:

No is a type of install. It means the system will do a fresh install, but keep all of the data intact.
well she said she did a archive install, and it screwed everything up
well she formatted the drive as the mac format (she said one of the three).
I was talking to a nice woman the other day and she was having a trouble with her External Disk Drive. Below is the chat log I had with her:
"[15:31] <tallmacgirl> i think ive made more trouble trying to fix the glitches . I just want it to run right anymore
[15:32] <darrglud> well u have the model?
[15:32] <tallmacgirl> the external drive?
[15:33] <darrglud> yeah
[15:33] <tallmacgirl> if its the drive, will it work at all?
[15:33] <darrglud> u could try it in the other system?
[15:33] <tallmacgirl> or could I have formatted it incorrectly?
[15:33] <darrglud> what partition type is it set to?
[15:33] <tallmacgirl> ive never had an external drive before now
[15:33] <tallmacgirl> type?
[15:34] <tallmacgirl> hmm, it was some mac thing
[15:34] <darrglud> yeah, like fat32 or resiers
[15:34] <tallmacgirl> there were 3 choices
[15:34] <tallmacgirl> and the one it was originally defaulted to wouldnt be recognized with photoshop
[15:34] <darrglud> did you ever have it working?
[15:34] <tallmacgirl> so i reformatted it and it showed up in photoshop
[15:34] <tallmacgirl> yeah
[15:35] <darrglud> could you write to it and the whole works?
[15:35] <tallmacgirl> but then my mac got a kernel panic
[15:35] <tallmacgirl> So i called up the mac guy who told me to do an archive install
[15:35] <tallmacgirl> with my original disk, which was a previous OS

I have a Lite-On XJ-HD166S (that came with a Dell Dimension 4700 in Dec 04) and it no longer works. I replaced the old one with a new liteon (i've had good luck with liteon drives), and gave it back to my family member.
Now, I want to resurrect the drive so I can get it working in my old Pentium 2 system.
The drive spins up and stops it, and it trys to spin up again and spins down, and so on. I think the issue is the motor, but I'm not sure.
Could someone tell me how to fix the motor (if it's possible)? Or could they tell me what they think the issue is.
I cannot afford a new one, because I don't have a job.
Any help will be HIGHLY appriciated.
Buying a Linksys might make life alot easier. I have no problems with my Dlink nic card in my old pentium 2, but for routers, I've heard they were junk.
if you can go intel do so, because you'll get a lot more performance from a dual core intel :-).
Well first of all. What type of cards are you using (i.e B, G, A, or N) and is your desktop wired or wireless?
I have a compaq Armada 4131T laptop from 1996 or 1997 (I got it from my uncle for free, so I'm not complaining), and it doesn't have an usb ports or network ports.
I'm pretty sure it's only compatible with the 16bit PCMCIA cards (PC Cards i think) not the newer 32bit CardBus cards.
So, I'm looking for a USB card that would be compatible with the laptop. Even if it's the old USB 1.1 it's still a big step up from none.
I'm also looking for a network card. It cannot be a modem because I want to connect it to my home network. I don't care if it's wired or wireless.
Could you please link to either or both of the above or point me in the right direction. As long as I know what I'm looking for I can purchase it (but if you link to Newegg for example, I will accept that too.)
I will really appricate any help you give me.
Thank you,
Ryan (Darrglud)
i think ur right, but it might be confused by Dell's hidden partition too?
Move the ad under the top of the page (that is horizontal) and place it on the bottom of the page, because it makes the site look really weird.
I would recommend that you visit http://www.w3schools.com, because they have many good tutorials on HTML, CSS, JavaScript and more.
Or you could do it separately using Gparted (which is included in Ubuntu)
What Anti-Virus are you using? Hopefully it's Norton, Nod32, or Mcafee.
Could you please clarify your question?
well i out of school for the summer, so I can work 9 hour days :).
well since I charge much less then you do, then I probably will get more.
How many people u get?
I was thinking of online sources, including craigslist.
As a followup to the post of "How much I should charge?", I need a place or hopefully multiple places to post my ad for computer services I'm doing this summer.
So, I'm basically doing upgrades, repairs, and complete system builds.
I'm just wondering where i should post the ad. And, should I setup a website for the service?
(BTW, I am only looking for local sales, because I don't want any funny business, and I don't want to be scammed either).
Any help would be highly appreciated.
My best suggestion is to talk to a lawyer about this, because he or she can give you more information.
Well, I would charge the customer the whole cost of the components + shipping. Plus I'm only looking to earn around 500$USD to 1000$USD over the summer.
I'm thinking of doing computer repairs / building over the summer for some extra cashola. How much more money should I charge, above the cost of components?
Profits and cost of ownership are two different things. There is no linux-copy of Active Directory that offers even close to the scale/power of its Microsoft Counterpart.
Point being, yes apache is a great alternative to IIS, Bind for DNS, etc...Nothing yet will replace Active Directory. Saying you're going to run Active Directory on linux is like saying you're going to make a Ford Corvette.
With IPCop (a debian based Gateway solution), you could successfully run it on a Celeron 300 (I've done it before).
With your limitations of running boxes, there isn't much you can really do...procure a copy of Windows 2003 Server Small Business Edition? About $800 and includes ISA and everything else you need, and then you will still have your DC sitting on the gateway because of the 1 box limitation.
All this depends on what time and money you have at your disposal.

Well couldn't I use a samba server, because the most important thing for me that i can have the accounts on every computer in the network. Is it also possible to setup the shares, because i can do the restrictions on the local system.
Ok, well i cannot do multiple servers, but did I mention that I will be behind a router, and the site / ftp will ONLY be accessable outside the network. I will have to use linux, because i want to make the maximum profits possible (plus I like linux anyway). As for the gateway, would a pentium 1 work?
WarDriving time folks ~
Have you tried downloading it at work or school, using their network?
Jbnnnet, have you tried to make the outgoing port be 80 (which is always unblocked, because it's the port normal web traffic is moved on) and the outgoing be something like 27960 (which is used for quake 3, be creative, because that may not work) for outgoing?
I've had some experience with a netgear, and let me tell you it is a pain in the blank to get it working with a Verizon connection. I was trying to set it up for a family member, and it didn't work. I wondered why? Well, it turns out you have configure it a certain way (i'll try to get the configuration I used over the weekend, before I move it to my network as a backup router / switch) or it won't work.
I am looking to setup a domain controller, a security system (with website filtering, I would prefer if it let me unblock certain websites, and let me use a username and password to login, and bypass all filtering), and a webserver / ftp. Preferably this will all be done on one system, with virtual machines
In regards to the domain controller, I'm not positive that is what I'm looking for, but I can describe what I am. I am looking for a way to have one system control all of the usernames and passwords and network shares. So if someone changes a password on one computer, every computer on the network will have changed the password. If possible, it would be ideal to have settings move from computer to computer too. How about resolutions? Can i make them change for each account. So if Bob wants the resolution (screen) to be 1600x1200, and Joe wants his resolution to be 1280x1024, and they are on the same system, is it possible? I know it is with Linux.
With the filtering / security gateway, which do you recommend? I'm thinking of doing this for a school and I'm wondering what would be a good os / program. I've looked at Astaro Security Gateway a little bit, but I don't know about it.
When it comes to the ftp server and web server, I can figure those out, since I've had some experience with those types of applications.
Since …
I have a general question about compilers, I just want to know the opinions of people that have been using them for a while. I want to know what is your favorite one (the name and version) and why you like it the best.
The one I like DevC++ 4, because it's stable, and it allows you to stay in the source-code the whole time.
If you have a secure erasing application you can get rid of the whole text file. I hope this helps, and tell me if it does.
What do you guys (or gals) think about http://www.cprogramming.com/? Is is a good place to learn C++ (and C) or not? How about http://www.iu.hio.no/%7Emark/CTutorial/CTutorial.html? Please send me your response.
Unless you absolutly need Windows Vista, I would personally recommand avoiding it for the time being. It's incompatible with a lot of hardware, and also it's just not necessary if you are currently running Windows XP or Windows 2000. What are your thoughts on this subject matter?
Hmm... doesn't look like the company you speak of even exists yet. Anyway, providing a website with more information might spark more interest; simply providing the information above doesn't give enough information. Some things that you haven't talked about:
- What requests are there?
- Do developers get to choose what they want to develop, and then simply submit it?
- Do you join an existing project and work with a team, or are you responsible for making a team?
- Of what difficulty are the projects, and how long do you estimate them to take until first release?
Information such as this should be put on a website, along with contact information (although you shouldn't provide it here as that's not allowed).
Best of luck to your project.

Good Idea, in fact we have a website, which is http://lda-usa.wikidot.com/ . A brief little thing I will say is, the developers get to pick and choose what projects they want, and there will be some meetings, just talking about new projects and the progress on different projects. If there are multiple people developing a project, we will let the programmers have meetings. I'll post the rest on the website tommarow (around 9am EST). Thanks joeprogrammer though, for pointing out I need to give more details.

I am currently running Ubuntu 6.10 (I hope that's the right number for Edgy Eft), and I had installed a Radeon x1650xt lately, and I am wondering if they're any drivers written for this operating system, and this video card. If so, how would I go about installing them, seeing how I haven't had much experience in installing drivers in Linux, and I've had cards that were 100% compatible with Ubuntu.
The issues I am experiencing are, on websites, my browser isn't smooth when browsing, and is very choppy. Video (using Flash) is fine from what I see, but I am having many issues with scrolling. Also, I would like to play some games, such as Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, which requires OpenGL, but this isn't a must, when I can boot into Windows XP and play it from there.
Thanks,
DarrGlud
Another common question. You will need to find a 3rd party boot loader, and setup arguments to get both drives to be able to be booted from. Although, i think you can do this with Windows built-in boot loader, I would Google Windows 98 and XP dual booting.
In my experience it should be on the primary drive / partition, but I like to use my 400 SATA for storage and my 200GB IDE for data, so I am dual booting LInux and Windows on the same drive (well actually, tri booting, since I wanted to test some things out with Windows Vista).
Another reason why virus writers write for Windows, is they aren't open source, and in the hacker community, they can tell others that they did this on a non-open source operating system. ALso, since Linux is open source, the holes are patched within a few hours - days.
Linux Developers Association USA are looking for people who would like to develope and code programs, that there are many people requesting. The goal is to make a bunch of applications that will allow anyone to get what they want done, easily, and without coding their own software. As a coder, you will learn some important team-building skills, as well as helping the community.
We are non profit, and are NOT looking for money, nor will we pay money to people who help out. It's 100% volunteering, but in the long-run everyone wins. As a member, you also get the source code to ALL of the programs we develope, before they are released.
We only are coding Debian based software and webware. We are looking for someone to provide us a file server, for the source doe and applcations.
