Well have you looked that you are putting the correct plug into the correct socket. They can both fit each hole so check you are putting them into the right port first of all.
If you are puttin them into the right ports, then check for dust and foreign objects in the port on in the plug. Clean them out and try it again.
Going to USB technology is another method but not necessary until you have found the problem your current peripherals.

As i said in the PM to ya, you should give your computer a good hovering out/clean with an anti-static cloth.
I would take out everything inside your machine, unplug everything and give it a good clean, wipe all of the contacts with an anti-static cloth though, a vacumn cleaner may do more harm than good.

Your computer could recieve the wireless signal if you bought either; a PCI wireless expansion card, or a wireless USB stick. The latter option is the cheapest and most effective. Seeing as it looks like a normal USB memory stick but does wireless connection instead of saving your data. You can also move it around the various USB ports on your computer. They vary in price so shop around for the best deal. Using wireless in games is fine but you do tend to get short periods where your connection may lag for a second or you get a very high ping for a short amount of time (split seconds nothing like minutes). This may be a future option for you. Also just check in the game itself that you have selected the correct Network options, normally under a section called Connection in the options menu, in most games.

Have you got all of the power cables from your PSU (Power Supply Unit) connected correctly. One of them may be loose so cehck all of the connections inside of your machine.

Is your router wireless at all?
If so you could try and get a wireless connection just to see if the router is at fault. This problem seems to be linked to the modem & router hardware.
Also what game(s) are you trying to play?

Well then, it looks like your inbuilt monitor is either broken or the backlight has failed. Have you dropped it recently or has it received a heavy blow or the like?
Also open up the laptop and have a check that the backlight is on one piece and hasn't broken/blown/dirt in the way.

Re-download them off the microsoft site. That might your only option with that one.

Is there any obstruction (dust, dirt etc.) o nthe battery contacts? Clean them on the battery and on the laptop then see if that helps.

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

Have you checked that one of the backlight bulbs hasn't blown or has stopped working. Try to run it onto an external monitor, just to check that you can see the whole screen, then we can rule out any problem with the actual computer and limit it down to the VDU on the laptop

Check for dust/dirt around the laser and indeed as sillycliff says check for scratches on the disc itself. Just to ask the obvious, are you accedentally putting the DVD into the CD drive?
Also check on the back of the game what speed your DVD/CD drive needs to be at. Your drive may not be fast enough to play the game. But if you can instal it without a problem i don't think it may be the problem, but it is worth a check.

They show a wide variety of different makes and speeds. As the RAM gets a higher speed and more storage capacity the bigger the price. But brands do vary.

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

Welcome, and yes you have posted it in the right place.
If you are currently running Windows XP 1Gb is ample, if you are running Windows Vista, which i am guessing you are, 2Gb of RAM is a worthwhile upgrade.
If you download and run the following software:
http://crucial.com/systemscanner/loader.aspx?Agree=Yes
Then run the small program that you have downloaded. This will take you to Cruical Technologies sytem scanner facility. When you run the program you must be online. This will then take you to what crucial has found from your system. It will show how much (1Gb in your case) and what type it is. Then it shows what possible upgrades you could pick. You can then go onto buy them from crucial or take the information you have gained and buy the RAM somewhere else.

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

Have you tried connecting via an ethernet (RJ45) cable?
Either find one that you used, or buy one (very cheap seeing as every one has gone wireless crazy) then connect one side to the router and the other to the back of your machine if it has the correct port (they normally have a green and yellow LED on the top of the port).
Try this and you should get an internet connection straight away.
Going through an ethernet cable should wor for games.

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

Does your PSU (power supply) start to make a noise, or does it not do anything when you press the power button?
Also check that all of your cables inside of your machine are connected where they should be. One may have come loose and so your computer doesn't boot. Also check that the cable that connects from your switch down to the motherboard hasn't been knocked out of place, which would also result in your computer not starting.

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

I like WMP11 personally, there isn't much difference between them. As long as they play the music/CD's/DVD's in a good quality, that is about all you need. I wouldn't get iTunes/Quicktime player, i find it has slightly worse sounds and video quality compared to WMP. But that's just my opinion.

Did the modem come with an instalation CD?
Is it a plain modem that connects via a (Blue) USB cable? Or is it a Modem inbuilt into a router?

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

Also how much RAM do you have in your computer?

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

Control Panel => Add Hardware => Follow all the instructions shown in the wizard.
If this doesn't help, come back to us.

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

Have you changed any RAM, gfx cards, or your PSU recently?
What were you running at the time of the BSOD?

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

Well as long as there is the correct electrical components on the motherboard or even in the PSU, there would be no difference at all! As long as there is a transformer (a very tiny version) it will work perfectly fine. If it was in full working order without the -5V rail, the computer will have a system to correct that by scaling down one of the other voltage rails.

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

When installing RAM, it is highly advised that you instal them in pairs (2 sticks of the same kind and speed, e.g. PC3200, 1Gb @ 700MHz). If you instal 2 different speeds of RAM, all the RAM will run at the lower speed.
What i mean by pairs, is that the RAM of the same speed and capacity go together in 1 colour slot, and the other 2 in the other coloured slots. So in your case you could have the two 1Gb RAM sticks in the black slots, with the 512Mb RAM sticks in the red slots. Or the other way around.

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

Oh those kind of testers, plug in the respective cable and read of the results. Well charge will always flow to the more positive, so 0V to +5V or -5V up to 0V for example, i think they include the -5V just to make the microchips happy, because from my experience with them, via college, there has to always be a + and a - terminal to connect power rails. Some microchips can't cope with +/- 12V, so they use +/-5V instead. But if the -5V power supply doesn't work, or is not there, there are probably microchips in the system or even small transformers that scale down the voltage from - 12V down to -5V.

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

I do electronics so this is my knowledgeable area. What do you mean by "test bad in the -5V range."? That makes no sense seeing as it is or it isn't -5V! The only possible thing that it could mean is that, there isn't enough current going through, due to too much resistance in the wires. But that would very very rarly happen if they use a wrong compund to make the wires in the first place. What was the site that showed you the testing? If you could post it here i will take a look at it, and judge what they are on about.

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

What other components do you have in your PC? 350W PSU might not be big enough to handle all of your equipment, it then BSOD's due to lack of power. That could be the cause.

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

You should align them in ther respective pairs;
1Gb - 1Gb - 512Mb - 512Mb
OR
512Mb - 512Mb - 1Gb - 1Gb
As long as they are in pairs.

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

-5V is just another voltage path for the current to go down to.
It is purly for the the components within the computer that require a negative current, such as Microchips. There are the main supply voltages which are -5V , 0V and 5V for general use for the components inside the computer. The +/- 12~13V lines are for the main positive and negative voltages. This gives a greater potential difference compared from going to 12~13V to 0V, basicly it gives you double the voltage to play with.
