1. Could be codec problem. To check, in iTunes try ripping to .acc format.

2. Or could be a copy protection issue, which means that the CD has been encrypted so that drives can't copy from it. You can easily test this by seeing if you have the problem with just one or more CDs.

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

Note that it could also be that your screen's gone. Try to test your laptop with a separate monitor.

You should repost your thread in this forum to get the best help.

If you have a virus, you will most likely be asked to download Malwarebytes and run a full system scan. But as I said repost in the right forum so that the right people can help you fix your problem.

How about pulling the power out of the BIOS? That would remove the admin BIOS password and let him carry out the repair, and possibly utilise the backdoor information posted earlier? I know it's not easy, but it's gotta be an option right?

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

prices are a bit steep

you can get a 1ghz pIII /384mb ram laptop for £60 or under in very good condition off ebay

I've just had a look and I didn't see any for similar specs at that price, they were about £100.

But to be honest I don't mind selling the Evo for about £55, think that's a bargain-and-a-half if I'll be honest.

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

As their hardware configuration is very old , are you interested to sell both of them in $50

Do you mean pounds? I can't deal in dollars as I'm in the UK like you (apparently) are!

Might be a good idea to back up your files and folders before installing SP3 to be on the safe side.

And to run it, isn't one of the extracted files an exe that you need to run? If in doubt, directions here

It's alright Salem. To be honest the machines are just sat cushioned doing nothing. Just don't believe in binning some electrical applicances, or it would have been in the skip ages ago.

And to answer your question AC, postage to the US would cost upwards of £40. If you were only willing to pay $10 for a laptop then the answer is 'no, it's not worth it'.

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

I don't know if you saw the reply below before Tim but I suggest you follow the advice and then post back here if there are any further issues. Goodluck

Well, you are infected.

To help you though, it's brastk.exe and you'll need to focus all your effeorts on getting rid of it quickly. Stop the process straight away and check if it re-appears. Early remediation can be attempted by looking for anything in Windows/\system32 created at the same time as brastk.exe or later without a digital signature. I'd rename them all.

One of my former lectures used to joke that the reason DB Admins get paid more than anyone else is because the work is so boring and tedious (compared to software engineering or development for example) that there aren't a lot of people willing to do it, let alone make a career out of it.

I think there might be some truth to that.

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

The journey of life is about who gets there, not about who gets there the fastest, so drive slowly.

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

Thanks for all the replies, it's kind of what I expected really. 2003 is still very much valid, but with (probably very long) time people will shift to 2008.

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

I assume you are in the States mate (cos you say 'dollars'). Well I am in the UK, and even if I sold one to you at that price, you would pay quite a bit more for shipping I imagine.

And to answer your question, the Pentium III/128MB RAM machine still has Windows 98 I believe.

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

Indeed well done mate. Hopefully with detailed steps then someone else who gets this problem will know what to do.

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

HD means "hard disk", and if you have a total failure then yes your data would be lost.
Can you think of any changes you might have made to your system, software or hardware, before the drive stopped working?
Also can you test the drive in another computer? Cos if it works in another computer then you can back it up and then get it replaced.

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

Yea if you can't view previous emails then it probably means all the email is saved on your computer alone. Bummer! It's a shame that SCANPST.EXE didn't work either.

Is it possible that there's some malware doing some damage in the background? Could be worth using Malwarebytes I think. Click here for instructions on how to use it and post back and let us know how it goes.

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

I agree with Suspishio, and indeed what everyone else has said. If all forms of repair haven't worked, a re-install is the next step, but then this is not guaranteed to fix the problem if your PST is corrupt.

If it is a POP3 account that you're trying to access (which means that all your mail has been downloaded to your computer in PST format) then a corrupt PST is very bad news.
If however your messages are stored on the server (could still be the case with a POP3 mailbox actually, depends on the setup) then by all means feel free to remove the PST (Office Data Files), and reinstall Outlook, and recreate a mail account. With the second scenario you can get all your mails back from the server.

Was going to suggest using a different email client such as Thunderbird, but that will only help if (to sound like a broken record) your mail is still kept on your mail server (hotmail, or yourdomain.com, or youremployer.com.

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

I take it by 'deleted' you mean "deleted permanently from the Recycle Bin". The answer is 'Yes', and you need the right software.

Disk Doctors is one I found by searching on Google, but there are quite a few decent ones out there I believe, and free too (even if it's just the trial version).

Two things you must not do though before you've run the file recovery software (to increase the chances of you getting your stuff back):

1. Don't create new documents.
2. Don't run the Disk Defragmenter tool.

Goodluck! And after this if you can, run regular backups.

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

With my last HD problem, using a good disk recovery tool helped.

You might also want to check the jumper cables to ensure that they are fitted properly and correctly configured. The fact that you can't even see it in the BIOS anymore is indicative of either a physical (cabling) problem, or one of the most extreme kinds of HD failure I've ever heard of.

Welcome to DaniWeb, and I hope you enjoy your time here!

The easiest way to stop your laptop searching for available wireless networks would be to switch the wireless adapter off. This is on the left side of your laptop according to the manual.

Hey thomas

Have you tried copying from your removable drive to your desktop and installing from there? If that doesn't work, how about superantispyware? If the malware is preventing those as well, a system repair might be the last option.

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

Houston is right, the file transfer estimate in Windows isn't always very accurate, simply because the programming needed to get it properly right would be quite excessive. If you can see the Send & Receive Window, you're good.

Having said that, you can search for an Outlook plugin that might do what you want, and you may be lucky to turn something good up. Do post back here if that is case and let us know :-).

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

That's interesting, would have thought it was spyware but apparently not. Oh well as long as it's fine now. Was it IE 8 Beta you got?

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

Problem though, is its not really suitable for home pcs due to the fact that the oil decays rubber

Or not?

From the website:

Won't the mineral oil eat away at the rubber, making capacitors blow or components fall apart?

Answer: We've seen many variations on this question. Some people say the motherboard will fall apart, others that the acrylic tank will dissolve away to nothing! In reality, we have seen absolutely zero effect. All components are perfectly intact, and the system remains rock solid. The only impact we have seen is on adhesives -- the label stickers on the memory came off, and the adhesive backing on the weather stripping became useless. However, it seems somewhat selective. The label stickers on the video card and motherboard are just fine. But to answer the cries of doom and gloom -- we've seen no indications yet. All the rubber seals are intact, and the capacitors are completely unaffected. It seems as if we'll be able to run this system for quite some time, if not indefinitely.

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

Just realised I didn't quite answer the question. Yes the problem is gone now because when I navigate the site as a guest, I don't see any of the "dodgy" adverts anymore. So yeah solved!

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

that would mean less money. Daniweb is a big operation so i assume it needs ever penny of ad revenue for bandwidth.

Wow... the ins and outs of running a big website. What I find a bit funny is that technically if DW got a decent cash injection, or all members donated even just for 1 month, the ad companies would still pay, but only guests would see their ads, thereby reducing the effectiveness of their marketing... sort of.

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

That's exactly what it is - a debate between the haves and the have-nots. And I always think if you do have (something useful), then you should share it, if not for anything, because one day you won't have (something useful), and will want someone to share it with you.

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

I may be late, but a work colleague showed me it this morning and I thought I should share with the people on here. Do watch the video at the top of the page if you can, and look at the progress one year after (at the bottom) as well.

Lol figures! Trying to get the poor lad to cough up by any means necessary!!

William if you really want the ads to go away, use one of the ad blocking software suggested earlier. And then when you're old enough, you can give however much you want to help run DW.

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

Oooooh, and I DEFINITELY like the new parts of logging in and logging out. The username and password boxes with greyed text, the asking for confirmation when you logout and the links that come out on the page. Very professional I think.

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

Good - 21st Century/Vista/OS X compliant look, design, feel with the menu bars. Good work

Bad - Someone's already pointed out the lack of rounded edges on the left part of the sidebars
- The grey bar with all the different sections, looks slightly odd IMHO with just the face at the end to represent the Community Centre. Surely you either want icons to accompany the text (I know there are some icons that were used with blogs on the "old" site, maybe those), or just text?
- The advert at the centre of the page is centred alright, but then the advert in the sidebar runs under it a little bit. I know it's a bit pinickerty, but it does appear to make things look ever so slightly untidy. I'll attach a screenshot.

Anyways just my two cents, overall the site is still impressive and a favourite of mine, and credit to you for taking the initiative. Also would I be right in saying that the layout was maybe inspired a bit by a facebook.com?;)

Oh almost forgot to say, I also like the effect you get with attached pics (enlarged and centred on a dimmed background, and click or esc to exit, really cool!) Though I suspect it might have been available for sometime and I just hadn't noticed.

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

Well I've disabled Adblock Plus now and those ads are gone. IMVU is back :-).

So yeah, good job! Will mark as solved!

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

Yaaay, white spaces instead, and that's just with Adblock Plus. I will miss the "i m v u" characters, but apart from that I think I'll be fine. :-D

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

Adblock Plus + NoScript

Hey, I'm going to try your combo as the ads are still there.

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

Hi Administrators/Moderators,

I've been using Daniweb for a while, and like it's clean look and feel, simple navigation system and just generally a homely place (like an online Pret A Manger almost) to read and talk about IT.

So imagine my surprise when I logged on today and on the homepage in the ad banner section beside the logo, was a series of stills from videos of girls in bikinis, inviting me to "Click to play" or something or other. In all my years here I've never known Daniweb to use that type of advertising - of an 'adult and sexual' nature.

Was this intentional, or is it some sort of breach? If intentional, is it a sign of the times, I mean is there more money to be made from companies who work in that industry?

Hope I'm not stepping out of line or anything, an honest reply for a curious mind would be great thanks.

The frog throws up its stomach first, so the stomach (inside-out) is dangling out of its mouth. Then the frog uses its forearms to dig out all of the stomach's contents and then swallows the stomach back down again.

A good lunchtime conversation piece!

Awesome! I am so going to bring that up the next time I'm with a bunch of people eating very delicious and expensive food! If I make it out alive, I'll let you know!!!

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

Yea sorry I did mean Server 2008, but I was thinking of the technologies, which are Exchange 2007 etc. :-p

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

Hey people,

This is for Windows Admins and such like, and I guess to some degree Windows users. I am basically trying to find out people's thoughts and predictions - When will Windows Server 2003 and related technologies become "outdated"? When will there be a greater proportion of 2007 servers than 2003? It's kinda like asking, when will the Vista forum on Daniweb reach the 10,000+ threads that XP has? Or to put it a different way, how quickly? It's almost reached the number of 9x and Me threads, and already has more posts.

I'm asking because I'm trying to figure out how quickly I need to start getting serious with Exchange & AD 2007, so as to be able to keep up with demand.

All thoughts welcome, cheers peeps!

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

Hey Sam,

Have you tried calling the number on the activation screen? Maybe speaking to someone at MS they can stop it from what sounds like an endless and annoying loop. Sorry can't think of much else to do...

Don't wanna suggest a re-install in case your activation process doesn't then work because you've used the installation key before... actually that JUST MIGHT work. But ring MS and ask them first. It sounds like a new machine, so a re-install shouldn't be a problem right?
