Hi Jim,

Do you remember any thing that you've changed - new software, new hardware? I suspect that's what's causing the errors. And you will probably have to go into safe mode, maybe with select drivers installed, in order to isolate the problem.

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

That is the mose honest. refreshing answer I have had to any question in a very long time, thank you.

:) You're welcome mate.

Hello Po-e!

Is the Vaio running Vista or XP? Whichever it is, there is a network connection icon on the bottom right of the task bar (close to where the digital clock is). Right click it, and it will give you an option to search for available networks. Do this and see if you find and can connect to your network

I'm assuming you've got a router and both computers connect wirelessly?

Also, try connecting the Vaio with a cable (if it is currently trying to connect wirelessly). And check that the wireless switch is in the "ON" position (that one always gets my clients!)

Let's know how it goes

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

Why do you have to ask such a silly question? Why are men different to women? Thankfully we are not all the same and therefore react to stimuli differently; if we were all the same you would have not needed to ask this question as you would have known, we all would have known the answer, including you!
Reflexive sneezing induced by light, and sunlight in particular, is estimated to occur in 18 to 35 percent of the population and is known
as the photic sneeze reflex (PSR) or the ACHOO (autosomal dominant
compulsive helio-ophthalmic outbursts of sneezing) syndrome.

Because by asking silly questions you get to the lowest level of a tower of information. I love the low levels. And thank you for your response, because I really have learnt something new today. And jasimp, I WILL hold my eyes open next time I sneeze!

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

There are a lot of people who CAN and DO sneeze with their eyes open, and nothing much happens.

I would like to meet one.

There actually isn't any medical reason why we do it, it's just a reflex the same as your leg jerking when you hit the right nerve.

Then why doesn't everybody react the same way? Any human being I know who is unexpectedly pricked with a sharp pin will jump, and make some sort of noise. Why isn't this the same with sneezing.
And besides, isn't a sneeze the REACTION TO stimuli (allergens), NOT the stimuli itself, requiring a reaction (closing or not closing of eyes)?!!

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

But I still find it odd that it would work, then not work... have you heard of Slipstream, or a Slipstream CD?

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

How easy does the Linksys interface make it to track what traffic is being sent by each client?

I have to say I have never used it to monitor traffic per se. But with regards to the interface, uumm, it seems pretty straightforward, but you might need to read the help file once in a while to see what their terms mean etc. Use it more as a tool for linking parts of our network together. They haven't failed me, but then again they can't be perfect. I would say give it a try if it's possible, and if you need to, Linksys Support are pretty top notch. You get straight to someone who has a deep and proper understanding, and they email you a solution and stay in touch until any and all issues are resolved. Good luck!

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

Fact,.....A sneeze can blast out of your nose at a speed greater 100 mph.??????????

Possible, certainly very plausible. Because the reason we close our eyes when we sneeze is because if we didn't, our eyes could pop out!

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

Right. Maybe a faulty IDE cable then? I mean that would be an easier problem to solve than having to re-configure the BIOS to see the drives, which I've had to do before *nightmare*

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

Yea that's cool. Cheers

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

Hello mate.

I am a systems administrator myself, and we use Linksys Switches, which work fine. Cisco quality, industry standard, at apparently a fraction of the cost. However I have just checked out the 48-port switches and they look pretty dear.

Also, do you not have an in-house server, (which would imply that you use AD and not workgroups)?

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

Hi bottersbach
Have you checked in the BIOS menu, maybe there's something there that needs changing? Sounds like the board doesn't like not having two HDs anymore...

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

Apparently this issue has been solved, presumably marked so by yourself. Could you please post up what the solution was so that others can learn?

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

Or check out this page.

Looks more hassle free than letting the software do it for you, but you are still in charge of your PC's destiny so to speak. As with all cases, do a backup beforehand, so that you can restore files and what not if something goes wrong.

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

Hey there. Try this. Looks good, although I have to say I haven't used it before and so you use it at your own risk. If you do decide to try it out, do backup all your files, folders and settings, and ensure you have a System Restore checkpoint before the installation. You can create one to be on the safe side.

From what you say it sounds like it is a question of getting registry files back to what they should be.

I have two old laptops that I would like to get rid of now, as I have no more use for them.

They're both Compaq Laptops, one is an Armada, the other is an Evo. They are pretty low spec, I'm talking Celeron processor and 56 MB RAM and Pentium III processor and 128 MB RAM respectively. They would be ideal for someone who is good at revamping old computers, using them as slave drives, or some other sort of guinea pig device.

I'd like to give them away for £75 each or £120 together. Payment would be via paypal. If you're interested or would like to make an offer PM me or reply on here.

Cheers

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't this to do with a setting when you formatted the HD? I mean did you use a utility such as you get with an OS Disk?

i have a problem!

somehow i opened all my programs as torrent files.
i deleted the torrent program, but the programs are in unknown application and don't work.
i can't install new programs, cause they don't open.
i am just a stupid blondie with poor English, so please someone explane to me what to do...
the system restore doesn't work,
thank u so much!!!!!!
sorry to post here, but i couldn't find the way ...

Could a mod please move the post to a proper thread or does she have to do it?

Meanwhile I have never heard of this kind of behaviour, a dodgy Bittorrent client, or a virus? (sometimes the two are synonymous aren't they, hehe;) ). Any ideas anyone??

To vivifys: depending on whether your computer is Vista or XP, go to the relevant forum on this website, and look for a button that says "START NEW THREAD" near the top of the page, it's gold coloured. Click on it, and copy and paste your previous msg there, with some more information about your computer and how and when the problem occured. That should give you a better chance of getting the problem solved.

Good luck, and welcome to Daniweb :)

P.S. Your english sounds/looks better than you give yourself credit for.

Wow locksmith that DOES look good! Shouldn't have put IMG tags aroung the link tho, took me a few more seconds to view the link than normal :-p.

What's ur rig if you don't mind me asking, processor, GFx Card, RAM?

And I can't help but notice how similar ur taskbar layout is to a Mac OS X's. Is that accidental? :)

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

Is it a laptop by any chance? Cos I was just thinking along the lines that the board might be getting quite hot quite quickly, thereby causing it to freeze. I had an old laptop with that sort of issue.

And for what it's worth it could happen with a desktop as well, if the cooling fan isn't working, or isn't big enough. Can you check that the fans are working fine, and do you know how to find out the internal temp (of the CPU)?

Also what is the make of the tower or laptop?

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

Good shout Chizy, that's been my practice. People don't realise the importance sadly until something goes wrong.

Do you know about application backups though, I mean if your hard drive gets wiped by a virus, even if your documents are backed up elsewhere, what about your programs (which no doubt would have accumulated depending on how long you've had the computer for)? It is tedious to have to reinstall it one after the other.

Can someone tell me how to start my Dell Dimension E80 with Window XP in Dos Mode? I have been infected by a bug and it will not even start.

Do you mean that it won't boot up XP? Or that it won't POST at all? I reckon you mean the former. Also do you want to boot into Safe Mode with Command Prompt, or into proper DOS mode? Because Safe Mode is easier, it's just a few key presses away from when you turn on the computer, but real DOS Mode is a little more complicated, you would have to create a bootable disc on either a floppy disk, or cd-rom, or on a hard drive.

I am planning on typing format C: /s once dos mode is open so I can start new.

That sounds like reformatting the drive, which is fair enough if you know what you want to do and why you want to do it. But also it might be worth getting a disk repair utility for the hard drive (depends on manufacturer), and making use of that. I know there's a Windows feature that you can use, chkdsk.

Anyways can you please give some more detail about what the problem is and what you're trying to do, so that you can be pointed in the right direction?

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

No problem, glad to help. It is good to always check these things, thankfully it was something small this time. Please mark the thread as solved.

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

I don't believe System Restore can help. Because basically System Restore has to do with system state settings, reg keys, etc, and does not undo user tasks like the creation of deletion of documents. In the same way that if you did a System Restore to a point two days ago it wouldn't remove a word document (for instance) that didn't exist then, it cannot add something that was already deleted in present time. As far as I understand the only reason that System Restore can 'undo' the installation of some software, is that software being installed means that your Control Set Reg Keys have been altered, library files have been added, and so on. These types of files are within the jurisdiction of System Restore, because it has been monitoring them since the computer was put together. However user activity such as the creation and deletion of files and documents, are totally left to the user and the OS has no command over it in that sense. Which is a good thing I feel.

Haha my best is the guy who after being told the game, says "But why is it faster?" I have to be honest, I don't think that Vista is bad in itself as a concept, but what I do know is that my main issues with it lay in:
1) It's memory usage
2) Incompatibility with devices that existed before it - typical example - some of the workstations I manage are Vista, and the printer driver that I have to use aren't named for the exact model of the printer we use, but for the model before it. So Vista calls the printer a HP 1100 (for instance), even though it is actually an HP 1200. XP on the other hand calls it what it is.

That being said, I believe Vista comes with more out of the box, and it also comes across as safer and cleverer when you're trying to do something or sort out a problem than XP.

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

Hi, is the msg coming from your monitor or from Windows XP? Because if it is Windows XP then you can achieve the best settings usually by tweaking the settings in the Display Properties window. If it's from your monitor, then you might have to get the manual out mate.

Also you should check, could there be a setting in the NVidia CP for ur GCard that's contrasting with that for Windows? or your Monitor?

Thinka 40 Posting Whiz Team Colleague

I may be wrong, but I don't believe that this is possible mate, depending on how it was deleted. If it was deleted through 'User Accounts' in the Control Panel, and the documents weren't shared or backed up on to a separate drive, then I think it might be gone forever. Particularly if data has been written to the drive since the deletion occurred.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi silverbomb, and welcome to Daniweb.:-)

Now about your problem, are you saying that you've gone to Tools > Folder Options > 'General' tab > Open each folder in its own window, clicked Apply, then OK and nothing changes?

How about doing something as simple as a System Restore to maybe yesterday, if it was all working fine till today? Maybe a system file got changed/corrupted inadvertently and if that is the case, System Restore can take you back to when everything was good.

I agree with Oly. I would say along with Laser's suggestion to disable toolbars and add-ons, go to Add/Remove Programs and try to find this "Searchsave" (or the program it came with) and remove it.

Also as an extra measure go into your root directory (e.g. usually C: on Windows) and find the folder in which the program was installed and delete that too. On XP this would be C:\Program Files\Searchsave, for instance.

I don't think you can lose which ever you go for. A small company gives you hands-on responsibility in a real-life situation, which is very valuable. And like your friend says, a big company helps you learn good business practice, which will also be needed at some point in the future I imagine.

I think that for the kind of freedom you seem to want, the Sole Proprietorship business is the way to go, they usually are more flexible than Small-Medium Sized Companies that have been around for some time.

But all in all, the decision has got to come down to you, and what is most important is for you to do what you want and love to do. Just my 2 cents, remember, "You rise and fall by your own actions". All the best!

Hey Kranks,

I have used this site GSMArena in the past, and it's served me pretty well.

Now I've looked on there, and at first glance, I wouldn't bother with the E62, and the BB8320 - They haven't got 3G, which means you can't use HSDPA, the fastest speed mobile broadband technology commonly available - not good. The Blackberry Bold is apparently not out yet, (or maybe it's just come out), but it looks good. So does the E90. Now I have always been more pro-Nokia, and a bit anti-Blackberry and on that basis alone, I would plump for the E90 :) .

I've got an HTC Tytn II and I do love it cos it's got Wifi, 3G and HSDPA capabilities, Can Sync with an Exchange Server, or can pick up emails using POP3... A "lot" of hard drive space, hasn't crashed on me in a month, so far quite impressive. You can check it out here.

Hope all that helps

Hitler was a foot soldier in WW1, and suffered a decapitated shoulder for his troubles, which earned him a Medal of some sort. He also survived a riot in Munich, nine months in prison, and a bomb attempt (either it was placed under a different part of the table to where he was sat, or he didn't attend the meeting at all).

Guess after reading all that, it's not a wonder that his body was never found.
