I have knoppix but not that version...
I use guarddog firewall...and Mepis as well as Knoppix

Preconfigured and no problems.
No one I know uses antivirus, anti spyware ao anti adware in linux... yet...

Mozilla Firefox takes care of most of the problems or pop-ups...
Mozilla Thunderbird will take care of you Pop3 E-mail

Just for a quick test go to grc.com and click on shields-up and you will get a free port scan to see how secure you are at the moment and what ports are open, closed or do not respond.

Redhat 9 has some options which you can pass to the kernel at the Boot: prompt to work around certain problems or incompatibilities. You can read about them here:

http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-9-Manual/install-guide/ch-bootopts.html

Try the "noathlon" option first; it's been known to clear up boot-up hangs on Athlon systems.

I will in turn print out that chart. Thank you for your help. (=

Sphyenx 0 Posting Whiz

Have you had any version of Linux running correctly on this system before? Give us the system's full specs.

Yes, I run Knoppix 3.7 and Ubuntu.

all i said was i understand how to set it up, but i do not have a domain address as it ask's. I never said i knew the entire anwser. I cant say im much of a troll,. but hey thats cool. I dont know my NIC it came with the computer. I did not build it. Its a regular like every one else's it seems, it works perffect with most distro's so its not somethingnew. Sorry...
may i ask about this part though?
"This isn't IRC so forget the l33t h4x0r stuff. Contrary to popular belief, it makes you look like an uneducated moron."

were in the entire F***** post did i speak one word of that ignorance. Maybe im no LINUX master liek your self, technology is a new love of mine, so i learn as i do, Im a very busy person and i try to contribute as much time possible to this board by helping out etc. One simple question gets me put down like this.. how pathetic. Can any one give me a hand with my issue, ive read the slack ware guide, see my ehternet connection is on a DHCP it was ment to auto configure, but for som,e reason it wont pick up. Maybe ill just stick with debian, sorry. Thank you again, sphyenx.

Sphyenx 0 Posting Whiz

hehe, yes. The power's of two travel in 8 bits to a byte, in a bus. lol. Google up more on it if you really need help. Im not a computer science professional, but i got some of the basic's down. Lets count Base 2!

Sphyenx 0 Posting Whiz

Well you can always install only show the signature once per page, that will decrease the crowding, and possibly add a script to check [img] tags for the image etc and if its too large return an error stating the allowed size;)

lol, things are getting complicated (= Good idea.

DHCP uses the MAC address for leases, NOT a domain. It can also be configured to use hostnames to assign the IP leases, such as MCHSI, but in situations like those, if the MAC address doesn't match the lease, you get a new IP, or you get nothing (depending on their TOS.)

I know this, thats why i was getting frustrated.

Since you're already behind a NetGear router, the NetGear is receiving a DHCP lease from your provider - not your Linux box. Your router is assigning your local LAN IP addresses, regardless of what hostname.domain the box is configured for.

Yup

I have OptOnline cable, using a FreeBSD firewall/router, which is also a DHCP/DNS server for one of my internal subnets. I can plug ANY machine into that subnet, turn it on, configure it to use DHCP, and it'll get an address, regardless of what the hostname or domain that box is already configured for.

With free BSD it just got me on quick and easy.

Sphyenx 0 Posting Whiz

the thing is how would it pick up my DHCP, with out a domain.. its rediculous cause i cant skip that one prompt. its a standard PCI eth card. No other distros ahd problems with it.. Slack is not working right with audio either. umm.

Sphyenx 0 Posting Whiz

Ok well obviously your data is gone, but here try this. Take out the harddrive, and turn on the computer. hey look nothing happened. Then put the Hard drive back in.. It shoudl reconfigure. Ive never had this problem but its jsut a guess cause that works with many other componment, but may not work with a HD, so try this, try to use fdisk and re-partition the HD. Maybe then it will find it. If not please tell me what it says when you cant partition.

Sphyenx 0 Posting Whiz

wait you building from scratch and your installing XP correct? because when ever you install a new mobo, you need to reinstall XP, but you might get by with a simple upgrade install. Give it a try. If XP continues to not work, stick with 2000, i find it much better. Im a home user of both, I run advanced server, and XP. Im doing great with 2000, also if your willing to give your self a challenge download or order a nice linux distro. I did, thats what im currently working on.

much luck! (=. Any Q's im here.

Sphyenx 0 Posting Whiz

Ill explain the problem a little more to help. Ok when i reun the set up and install stackware 10.0 it asks to configure the OS, and the set up. Now for network it asked for the slot it is located in. PCE, COM etc. I had no clue, then I boot up. I run netconfig and it asks for a domain. I dont have a domain. How else would i run the DHCP? I know how to set up config's with suse, linspire, knoppix, but for some reason this one has me stumped, and your not babbling. lol (=.

Sphyenx 0 Posting Whiz

ok, when you configure the sound disable mic and line in.. and everyhting apart from standard? also if you're using a dial up modem it may be causing it

I do not use Dial up, and the volumes for all settings in alsamixer are at 0, when i move the mixer volume up and down in terminal, the static reduces as i move up and down then goes back to full blast. I do not have a mic installed either. The only sound related thing is my stereo so i can hear.

Sphyenx 0 Posting Whiz

Ok i boor my PC with the slackware boot floppy, log in as root, and i get an prompt that says my alsomixer may be.. umm not good, and then i startx, and then static comes in over the speaker's. But when i log out of X it goes i away, i tried to configure my volumed etc, no luck. Any idea's Please?thank's

Care to recant?

ok, run netconfig, now mt DHCP, doesnt require a host name from out knowledge. Our home jsut plugs in a modem and were good to go, our ISP is charter though, netconfig requires a host name and domain name. Any idea's.

"Actually, you use a Network Interface Card (NIC), not a modem, unless you mean a cable modem connected to a NetGear router, which your machine connects to via a NIC."

i said it was connected to my NIC, i was just saying it wasent wireless in other term's.

Hi. I'm new here and I need help. We have an IBM computer. Because of some problems we were having my husband put windows millennium on the computer. Unfortunately, it made our problems worse. Nothing will work right and we can't uninstall because we can't find it. We want o delete all files and put windows 98 back on. We have done this in the past and were ablt to go to run and type in format c:. Now it won't let us do that. We are not really familiar with fdisk, but tried that and still no luck. Can anyone help? We could always just get a new hard drive if we need to. Thanks for any help.

can you view my computer? if so have a floopy at hand and format at a boot disk. Dos will load up if you leave the floppy in on a reboot. Then do format C: that should do the job. You dont need to do fdisk for that. Partitioning is uneccesary unless you change operating systems FULLY, like to *nix. If you msut use fdisk i can send you a txt on the entire read me. Id post it but its not mine, I dotn want to break copyright.

Sphyenx 0 Posting Whiz

run scan's. Spyware, etc. Also run and post a hijack this log. you may have an infection.

Sphyenx 0 Posting Whiz

thats pretty cool, are there written documents on how you can do that? or is it in the web dev. script (html, javascript etc.)

Sphyenx 0 Posting Whiz

qt_parted is a program you can download the iso for and burn to a disk as an image and boot it up. type when you get the # prompt .run_qtparted then It will ask you for your key map, type 41. The english, and thens elect your mouse. If you dont know which one it is select autodetect.

Sphyenx 0 Posting Whiz

reformat the disk using QT parted, or fdisk. If its only your second HD. format your /dev/hdb1 to dos. Or better yer in the windows GUI, open up my computer and if its already formatted for DOS, then right click and reformat it there.

Sphyenx 0 Posting Whiz

before you do aything back up all your files and take notes on things you have and may want to replace, incase you get frustrated and forget. Im also sure you can get away with a repair. I did in windows 2000 etc. If worst comes to worse just reinstall. Or go linux, Redhat has RPM similar to Windows. Good luck!.

Sphyenx 0 Posting Whiz

post a hijack log in that section of the forum, also you can right click it and see where it is found in your pc by viewing its properties. Then go in and manually delete it. Also run weekly spyware scan's if not more. Also adware and many of the other malicious file scan's. Also maintain a well kep virus scanner, and updates etc.

Sphyenx 0 Posting Whiz

reset it and replay the installation steps. Then log in your 192.168.0.1 and configure your information. Then go boot up he wireless PC, and install drivers etc if you have to and set it up with the exact info you used on the main. To reset the router there is a little pin hole in the back, bust out a paper clip and stick in there. Hold it in for roughly 20 seconds works for me. But to be safe go about a minute. (do that first). ~sphyenx

ipartitoned my hdb3 with qt_parted. made three partitons
hdb1 boot @ 32meg's
hdb2 swap @ 512 megs
hdb3 main roo @ rest of disk. Now how to i know it its reading the swap? Cause everythings installed now.

Sphyenx 0 Posting Whiz

Ok i boot up slackware, now it doesnt seem to have an DHCP program to locate all my config etc. Maybe it does and im unsure. Im dual booting linux (slack 10) i put the set up disk in to configure the connection etc. I run of a modem connected to a netgear to my PC. Now when it says pick device theres a list of devices (claiming to be PCI names. Now i dont know what the numbers represent. Im figuring that each one names the order they are in. Now how can i figure which ones which, so i can have it find my ethernet card.) If there is another way to do all this please inform me if you have the time. I googles around, and i searched this database. Im not finding much on the topic.

Sphyenx 0 Posting Whiz

right click.. prop's then look under Web tab. there will be one for back ground as active desktop.

Sphyenx 0 Posting Whiz

Joke?

OK.

- There are little tiny men inside the computer who pick up the numbers and carry them around.

- Some of those tiny men know how to do 1-bit math.

- When the little men get hungry, they go to the power supply to eat.

- How does Windows work? In my opinion, it doesn't. It just messes everything up.

- If your hard disk crashes, all the little men fall down and get hurt.

:D

too cute, lol. lol heres how math applys, lol you know how memory applys it self in 32, 64, 128, 256 etc.. well its because memory carrys in powers of 2 sarting at 2 to the power of 2 all the way to 1024 and beyond!

Sphyenx 0 Posting Whiz

mix it up.. books and tutorials. You can get multiple opinions and you can think more openly on thing's. Im more in to web design then programming.

Sphyenx 0 Posting Whiz

did you take all necessary precautions when opening your PC, like touching metal etc.

( i think you might have fried something ) but im not 100% sure so please wait for my opinion to be backed.

Sphyenx 0 Posting Whiz

well MS has its supporters and its hater's. Im neither. Im proud the Mr. Gates has come far.. I would love to be him.. But if i were id talk to my developer's and my staff that the software released should be more secure.. also a bit cheaper considering its sold in soem bulk, also if they cared about user's these problems would never exist.. also to every one who complains... if these problems didnt exist, many of you wouldnt have jobs now would you?

Sphyenx 0 Posting Whiz

i have to agree mr. thong, lol. I love KDE. It has the best feeling, its built in to the new Knoppix 3.7 live distro too, i recommend it, I tested it on 8 computer's. All old and new.. old being 7-8 years.. new being 1-2 years. Works great on them all. Also there was no set up on any of the networks needed. Just i cant promise wireless accessablility.

Sphyenx 0 Posting Whiz

Well in windows 2000 you can right click the folder's and make them share able, or set up a network neighbor hood but when you want to log in to the other pc, go to Network neighbor hood, and select computers near me, click it and it prompts for a pass (make sure that PC is on). Im sure its the same for windows 9x, and xp.

Sphyenx 0 Posting Whiz

Hi everybody, I need your help, please.
about two years ago I was able to make my home network work with no problems, 2 or 3 computers were able to connect to internet through a router at the same time with no problems at all.

For the last two months, I am not able to connect my two computers, as soon as the second one connects to internet the other one disconnects.

I connect the modem cable to uplink port then pcs or laptops to lan ports
I also was able to connect my computers through a hub with no problems, then I got the router, been using either one and no problems, but now with both of them got the same connectivity problem.
This is what I have

Internet cable, my provider allows only one ip
puredata rt104 router, 1 wan port, 1 uplink port and 4 lan ports
one pc with win 2000 pro
one pc with winme
one laptop with win xp pro
one laptop with win98 second edition

I have checked all cables and found no problems.
No matter wich computers I connect to the router, I always have the same problem, as soon as the other one connects, the other disconnects.

I have tried a couple of things but not luck yet, such releasing renewing ip...there is a reset button in my router but I haven´t reset it yet, will it help?

Sphyenx 0 Posting Whiz

you can configure your take bar etc, byt right clicking the task bar, and clicking properties. Also go to user accoutns and delete or disable your pass word.

Sphyenx 0 Posting Whiz

most XP pcs come configured to boot from the HD first. YOU need to set system bios too boot from the Disk Drive first. Then try to reboot with disk. Its a malware problem i think were a file makes your back ground an active desktop and links a black image to your back ground and you cant do anything. Did you regularly run spyware checks etc?

Sphyenx 0 Posting Whiz

convert to linus and use KDE's Konqueror Web browser.
Its much more user friendly and attractive. Actually everything about KDE is..
