yeah, there definitely is a better way, from within Windows.

Right click on My Computer, then click "Manage". Then, locate the "Disk Management" option on the left-hand frame. Click on that, and in the main frame of that Window, you'll see all of your drives right there. On your new drive, you'd see a box there that says "Unallocated space". Right click on that, and there will be options for initializing your new hard drive.

Lemme clear up some misconceptions, because I've done all of these things:

  • Installing a new motherboard in an installed Windows XP system might make you reactivate, however, you don't have to call Microsoft-- if you have Internet access, you can do it that way, too.
  • An OEM is not required by law to give you a full version of the software with your systems. Most OEMs make it available, though, upon request, or at least make product recovery CDs available for the system. An OEM is only responsible for restoring the system to the way it came from the factory, if that, and nothing more. Some have agreements with Microsoft to provide the media for up to one year, but that's not some law or something.
  • Even when an OEM provides the CD, they can modify the CD boot image as needed. Certain OEM systems do have BIOS locks in place where the boot CD will only boot/run on their particular systems. This is more to prevent piracy then some kind of "lock-in".
  • With these same CDs, it's just the El Torito bootable image that gets modified, not the actual OS installation files. It's just the bootsector information that makes it bootable per BIOS.
  • To start a Windows XP installation from DOS, you'd type winnt.exe from the i386 directory to start it up. That means you should be able to install from it, regardless of where you got that CD from.

please don't name your threads like this anymore.

Urgent::need help is just plain rude. It implies your thread is more important than others, when this forum prioritizes help requests on a first come, first-served basis.

Or better yet, let's just close it. Sounds like a member posting an assignment, and not reading the Announcement.

I really meant that u spend more time dealing with the bugs rather than with your codes. And by the way, I've downloaded a Beta Version, that is why I say it is bugged. You know, if I had known that there would be such a fuss for a christmas gift, i would never have posted it. It's not good to refuse a gift, especially on christmas. U either take it or take it and throw it away. Despite not being a christian, i understand the true meaning of the festival. U r spending more time critisizing my gift rather than answering my question. I'ts christmas guys, cheer up!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Christmas is not about subverting software demo protections, I'm afraid. I'm sure you were being lighthearted about your suggestion, but I had to delete it all the same. Let me go ahead and let everybody know: software piracy is an activity that will get you banned on this forum.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Okay, I found it out.

If you look at a 64-bit PCI card, it's keyed up front like a 32-bit card. If you plug a 64-bit card into a 32-bit slot, it should just run at 32-bit.

/me runs off to get a less expensive SCSI card!

I'll chime in and say that this is sad news indeed (I actually used Suprnova as my source for downloading Linux iso torrents after release because the main servers would be slammed), but...

Let's not post links to other torrent sites here. We all know the bulk of those sites consist of pirated warez and copyrighted works that are being exchanged illegally. As such, we can't be party to that here at Daniweb.

Can't you just disable the onboard sound on your current system, and then install your Soundblaster card?

I'd say the statement was uncalled for (in whatever context it was made) and extremely poor advise.
That alone should be enough reason to lower your reputation...

Oh, lighten up, man! :)

Given the sterling security record IE has had, you don't think it's worth it to at least say that in jest?

If I'm looking for a full-featured environment, I'll go with Gnome. Otherwise, I'm SUPER SUPER minimalistic, running ion.

I've got two 19" Dell Trinitron monitors running at 1600x1200. It's amazing how many Xterms you can stuff into a setup like that when you've divided your screen up via frames.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Mandrake 6? Red Hat 6? For the love of God, man! Where are you getting these old distributions?!?!?!?!

You're asking for nothing but trouble with those old versions. If you have broadband, you'll want to download a newer version. Your best bet would be to check out a place like CheapBytes to order some newer versions.

(FYI, Mandrake is up to 10.1, so there's a HUGE difference in your experience ahead of you.)

Let me pose this question regarding any OEM supporting Linux: If they didn't ship the system with Linux, why are they going to support it?

You'd want to attack the source, and ask why aren't they shipping Linux on them. Then, you'd see support for that firming up. Meanwhile, the only Linux drivers most any OEM will have are going to be the drivers that the manufacturer of a specific device have provided.

Now, as far as saving your settings is concerned, look around in the KNOPPIX menu for some "Save Configuration" options. IIRC, the documentation I saw somewhere on the KNOPPIX site discussed all about that-- you could save the information to a floppy/USB key, and then the system would load up the settings if you used a specific command to load the settings at startup.

Hey, it's cool. I was used to Firefox having a little RSS button for sites on it that are RSS enabled. Once I loaded the .xml script into a real RSS feed reader, it worked just fine.

I got off to a ridiculously slow start. The second month we were open, no new threads were posted and only one new post was contributed over the entire month! Just goes to show ya ... ;)

...And look at us now! I remember times when Dani and I were IMing each other, and she'd be worried about the success of the forum. Now, I think we're sitting pretty, and we didn't have to use any gimmicks from what I've seen.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

You're really better off attracting people by the quality of your content, and what kinds of content you're offering. If you've got people there motivated just to get to 250 posts, then you're going to have a bunch of people leave once the contest is over, or if they get to bored spamming to get the $25.

Besides, every thread would end up being something like, "I'M going to get the $25!" "Nuh-uh! I'm going to get it!"

I'm game, but my XP2400+ can probably only cook out a work unit every 2 or 3 days.

Actually, my 2500+ with 512MB of RAM kicked out 3 in about 1.5 days...

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Until I find a different machine to do this on, I'll have to put my love affair with Folding@home on hold after three platry work units.

I don't know if it was VMWare or Virtual Server doing it, but I was running into lots of ugly "Not enough quota" errors, and it was wrecking the "real" work that I was doing at the time. I'll have to pick things up a little later. :(

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Looking at the Aopen website, they don't list a model motherboard by that name. Can you re-confirm that? Also, are you sure it's not a floppy port?

Can you draw a picture of how everything's connected? This would really help me out, at least.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

For this to be true, you have something else misconfigured. In this type of setup, the router is not routing it's acting only as a wireless bridge so it's IP address is meaningless. The only necessity is that it's IP address not conflict with any PC's addresses on the network.

It can depend, though. This may be the case if you did not disable the DHCP server on the router. The router would still be giving out the Gateway address as being 192.168.0.1, which is now the host computer doing the connection sharing. It's almost as if you were running a network with a DHCP server that ran distinct from the router. The DHCP server is giving the clients the IP, gateway, and DNS information, which by coincidence is the correct information.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

What's the exact error message, and what OS? There are several instances where you could get that message, each situation being different.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Who's the underlying DSL provider for the AOL DSL?

A lot of DSL providers (AOL included) use Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE). Basically, you authenticate yourself like a dialup connection, except you're using an ethernet/LAN connection instead of a phone line.

You can use wireless, but I don't suggest Bluetooth. Instead, look at 802.11 b or g spec Wifi adapters. You'll need one adapter per computer, and a wireless router that can do PPPoE.

Basically, you just configure the router with the correct username and password, then once you've correctly installed the wireless adapters, it should all just pick up automatically and work. What bentkey means by site conditions are factors such as distance, building materials used in the house, and other devices in the areas. Each of those can affect how well your wireless signal is sent and recieved. If it's too big a deal, you might want to look at wired Ethernet instead of wireless.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Where'd you get that description from? Sounds like somebody's already done it-- couldn't you just implement that software, and write up the process for that?

I'm a networking hobbyist, so to speak. One of my favorite things to do is to is connect disparate system architectures together, and make them talk to each other. Perhaps you could set up something like a Linux-based Samba server as a Primary domain controller, and set up a unified logon with some Linux and Windows clients? That would certainly be a great thing, as you might actually use that in the real world.

Or, better yet, you could pick up some VBScripting using WMI and make a bunch of Active Directory/Domain administration scripts for use in a specific business setting.

There are all kinds of practical stuff that you could do for a final year project. If you're not already up on some of the underlying technologies behind your idea (if you're asking about where to begin with something, you don't have a grasp of the fundamentals, IMHO), then it's going to be tough to implement something usable that might actually apply to a real-world job you might get in the future.

What's something you like doing in networking? Infrastructure? System Administration? Support? Monitoring? Security? Take something you have a base interest in, and build upon that.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Plain and simple: Hubs can't connect you to broadband. Routers can.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Not anything legal or effective. How much faster do you need?

If you're downloading something, make sure you're downloading from a server that can "saturate" your link, ie, use all of your available bandwidth. There are things like compression and such, but they're all kludges to implement, and aren't all that effective, IMO.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Yeah, think of them as merit badges, or something, not as a Scarlet letter. There are lots of informative members here with low reputations, either because they've rubbed a couple people the wrong way, or the people they've helped don't care to give reputation.

If it helps any, I gave you some reputation. Hopefully, it will counteract someone else's poor comment. :)

Here's one I did a while back in answer to a reader question for my work site :

To me that semed a little rude to someone new to the board, just asking for a little help.

Not meaning to sound rude at all. I'm just stating the obvious there, and in fact showing you what we're all about. We're here to help, so you don't need to ask for it! :D I'm just making a silly example as to why you don't need to say you need C++ help when you're posting in the C++ forum, really.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Looks like a fine case, if I may say so myself. Looks are somewhat appealing, and the rails seem like they'd be convenient.

Actually, I appreciate you bringing this link to my attention, at least--I actually have an application that would work nicely with that plain-jane black desktop case!

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Wow... way to resurrect a dead thread, guys! ;)

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Just a helpful tip while you're on this forum:

In the future, please name your thread something relevant to your topic. "Need C++ help quick", in addition to seeming a little rude, tells us absolutely nothing about what you need help with. I mean, come on... it's a little obvious. You're starting a post in the C/C++ forum, so I wouldn't expect you'd need help rebuilding a carburetor or something....

Ok i still haven't figured out this assignment. If someone wants to assist me one on one with this assignment I'll pay them 50 bucks through paypal. The assignment is now my final and it is due tomorrow afternoon. So I'll be on instant messenger if someone can give me personal help with writing this. I HAVE to get it done and I'm desperate, and I know there are many very intelligent people on here ;)

AIM name is : RCellViper I'll be online almost all night starting in about 20 mins. Thanks!

Erm... We really don't allow solicitations to do homework for pay here on the forums. Just give it a little bit, and somebody will probably help. The time you spend waiting here could be spent trying to review your notes to ensure you completely understand the assignment you've been given.

Let's jump back on topic here, okay? This thread's been hijacked by this grammar discussion. Though completely valid and topical, I fear it's going to detract from the original poster's question.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

In the future, please choose a more descriptive title for your posts. It will do nothing but help attract people to your thread to provide help.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Okay, let me weigh in on this for a moment.

jasweb2002's comments could be a little more diplomatic, but he's spot-on. You're on a forum, not a chat-site or instant messenger. There is no need to abbreviate things, or use cutesy little spelling here. You have all the time in the world to read and reread your post before hitting Submit, so there's no need to make things short.

The best thing to do in a forum, in fact, is to be as clear as possible. Capitalize words properly-- most programming languages are case-sensitive, so that is a very important English construct that does carry over in the programming world. Don't abbreviate or use shorthand here-- it is counterproductive to your goal of getting help to say "omfg dood wat wud i do if i needed 2 get u 2 help me wit my fy prjt i need", and nobody understands what you're saying.

So please, for your own sake, use correct English, and you might get more responses than saying:

kk.. i get the point..
probly u cud help me something simpler... coz i can think of anything... wat abt the other option??

or

i would really appreciate if some of ya ppl helped out in how to go abt either one of these projects

or

if were so good in english u would have understood what i meant was to help me out in planning about it & not doing it for …

It would probably depend on the environment you're working in. What OS is this targeted for?
