You'll need to use someone else's computer if you can't use this one. Download the drivers and transfer them to a jump drive or a CD.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

You need to fix the driver problem first, especially the ethernet driver.
Go to the PC maker's web site and get the drivers.
If you don't know how, post the computer model and make.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Did you reinstall all the drivers?
Look in device manager for yellow marks.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster
hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Look under Communications.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

That really sucks.
You have a 10/100 Fast Ethernet Adapter
Download Belarc to identify it:
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
Then we should be able to find a driver.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

In Folder options, look for File Types, scroll down to URL. (Don't mess around in here).
Click on Open , then edit.
Action:Open
Application used:undll32.exe ieframe.dll,OpenURL %l
Use DDE is checked
Application:ieframe
DDE App: Blank
Topic: System
I suspect you could install Firefox to solve this, or just reinstall IE.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Removal instructions are here:
http://www.411-spyware.com/remove-psguard
"Spy Doctor" or "Spyware Doctor"?
You won't get an "Open With" option with a shortcut.
Select "Properties" and paste the url entry here so we can see what it says.
Does Internet Explorer work?

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

"Secondary" refers to the driver for the second display, and seems to be legit.
Comlete re-install instructions are here, and I would suggest that's the next thing to try:

In Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager:
See what video adapter is shown.
Right-click any and all, then select "Uninstall".
Reboot, and see if the correct card is detected and reinstalled.
You may need to have the drivers handy to complete this step.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

This doesn't make much sense. What are you actually trying to do?

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Well done. Soon you'll be answering questions instead of asking them.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

You need to boot with an XP System CD and do a system repair:
See XP Repair install
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

If you have have an actual install CD you should be OK. You can't actually delete any files from it.
Boot from the CD and follow the install prompts, including formatting the disk.
If you need more help, include the make and model of the machine and type of CD.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

If the drive is installed properly, you need to format it.
Right-click My Computer/Manage/Disk Management
Look or a drive that's unpartitioned, probably below the C drive. Right-click to Format NTFS

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

ok so you guys want me to just continue to install XP onto a 131gb partition?

That's not what I would do.
When you get to the install screen, you should delete any and all partitions, then create a new NTFS partition using all the space available, which should be 500 GB.
If i'ts not 500 GB, you have a BIOS problem, as someone pointed out, or the drive is not what you think it is.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

What Caperjack said.
Delete any existing partitions and reformat NTFS.
It's curious that a new drive would show a131 GB unpartitioned space, though.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

That's your third post about this software, so I suspect that there's a profit motive involved here. Care to enlighten us about your real agenda?
This software is unnecessary, unproven and expensive. No sale.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

visit www.pcmigrationkit.com

There's a great deal on 3 products that will get the job done for you. Plus the products will help keep Visat and/or XP running smooth.

I'd hesitate to spend $80.00 for software that is only used once and is completely
unnecessary. A clean install sounds much better to me.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

The file association has changed.
Right-click the file, select "Open With", choose program.
Check the "Always use..." box.

I don't know, but:
I looked at my icons and saw the same bar, which I had never seen before. This printer had been deleted some time before, but had never disappeared. I noticed it had docs pending, so I deleted them and the icon disappeared. So-any docs pending for this printer?

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Select the pst file that's stored under your old account name and use the import feature.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

What's the purpose of the new disk?
Any chance of getting the disks you should have received with these machines?
Why not just make a disk image?

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

I've never liked those transfer programs because they're slow and confusing.
I bet you'll find those files in some new identity in Docs and Settings that you didn't mean to create. Look there for all (most) of your files.
It's much easier and faster to import the mail and just copy the files.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

You're connected to the router, but not the internet.
To check this:
Start/Run/cmd
ping www.yahoo.com
If you get a reply, you're connected. If not (Times Out) no connection.
There's not much left but power cycling the modem and router and checking for a firmware update for the router.
You could try Firefox, just in case there's something weird about IE.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Remove the entry from the startup folder.
You are in serious need of more memory.
Most people think 512 MB is the minimum for XP, and RAM is cheap nowadays.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

A few hours later-
It occurred to me that you may not have set up this wireless connection.
You can use the Wizard in Network settings, or just right-click the wireless icon in the system tray/View Available.
Select your connection and click "Connect".

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Do you have a firewall enabled? If so, turn it off for now.
Check at the Belkin site for a firmware update.
The ASUS site is down at the moment, so I'll have to check them later. If you get a chance, check for a driver update for your wireless card.
Your IP configuration seems to be correct.
You might want to uninstall the wireless card in Control Panel/System and reboot. This sometimes helps.
And please: There is no such device as a "Rowder". It's a "router."
I'll check back with you later.

Hi, I have had advice on another forum: http://www.daniweb.com/forums/post512196-3.html that I could transfer my data from my dead XP Pro to a new PC using a powered ATA/IDE to USB 2 connector from my XP system's hard drive to the new machine.

The problem is that the new machine is running Vista Home OS. And that does not have Outlook or Outlook Express it has Windows Mail. I have set up a number of user accounts and would like to be able to provide the existing users with their data files from the XP machine.

Can anyone suggest the best way to do this. Apart from Office 2003 data files which could be simply copied the main problem would seem to be the email PSD files

Just find the appropriate .wab (OE) files or the .pst Outlook) files and use the Windows mail import function.

Patience, patience. This is the wonderful world of windows, designed to try your soul in the cauldrons of Hell. You'll emerge as a better person.
Try the wired connection. We need to know if your router is connecting to the internet.
Post ipconfig /all again.
Post the exact model number of your router.
Post the exact model of your computer.
Don't forget to power-cycle the modem.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

First, try a wired connection. This will verify your router is working properly. You have a valid IP address (192.168.2.3) so we know you're connected to the router.
Can you connect to the internet using a wired connection? (This may require you to recycle the modem-just remove the power plug for 10-15 seconds).
Are you getting any errors? Is encryption enabled? You should disable encryption until you have a good wireless connection.
You have IPV6 enabled, and this can cause problems.
From: http://www.hanselman.com/blog/UninstallingIPv6SupportOnWindowXP.aspx
Q. How do I uninstall the IPv6 Protocol for Windows XP?

A.

To remove the IPv6 Protocol for Windows XP:

1. Log on to the Windows XP computer with a user account that has local administrator privileges.
2. Open a command prompt. From the Windows XP desktop, click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.
3. At the command prompt, type:

ipv6 uninstall
Let us know what happens.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

"Rowder" = "Router"
Are you saying that you can't open any web page at all?
We need to know your ip configuration:
Start/Run
Enter cmd
At the command prompt, enter ipconfig /all
Right-click, select all
Enter copies to the clipboard
Paste the result to the message window.

Thanks for the PM, but it's better to continue the thread so everyone can see the resolution.
Dell support is here:

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs
Just enter your model (Dimension 8300) in the appropriate boxes, and you'll be taken to the drivers page where you can download the driver.
You'll probably need to enter your service tag to identify which driver applies to your unit.
Download the driver to a known location and follow the install instructions.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

You're welcome. I've found these things very useful. You can find them with adapters that fit laptop hards drives also.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Too many problems to mess with, especially the loose CPU clip.
Get a new computer.
Removing the data and transferring is very simple with the right adapters:

It sounds as though your sound driver is missing.
We'll need the make and model of the computer, or the sound card part no. to find the correct driver.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

It makes sense if the C is wrong.
Let's find out what disks you have.
Right-click MY Computer/Manage/
Disk Management
What drives are showing? I'm wondering if you have a partition on C (Probably called D).
Nice to work with someone from the old country (My last name is Vandervoort).
I'm also wondering if you installed Windows on the wrong drive (Just a guess, but I've seen it before).
Are the DOS commands in English-just curious?

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

that would only be correct if the file is on the desktop .also needs the C:\ for full path .
open mycomputer ,go to view ,toolbars ,and check off address bar ,then when you use mycomputer to go to the file it will show the full path to the file .
and the administrator acct you are referring to is found by going into safe mode ,repeatedly hit f8 on bootup to get to safe mode .

Caperjack is right-bad copy and paste on my part.

You understand the path stuff, so try this (Command line)
CD C:\Documents and settings\UserA\Desktop\ (Or any folder)

dir (Lists all files)
del/f (filename) (The /f switch forces deletion of read only files)

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

This is correct:
DEL \Documents and settings\UserA\Desktop\<a certain file>
Be sure to include the file extension.

Right-click these files/folders and get the properties. Are they marked "read Only"? If so, remove the check mark.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

That line is just the command line telling you where you are. No need to delete it (You can't, anyway).
You should enter "DEL C:/Documents and settings/<User A>"

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Open one of the folders and see if you can delete individual files. I'm guessing these are music or video files since they're so large.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Just logon as Administrator, navigate to those folders and delete them.
If these files are encrypted, you may be out of luck.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

If you're an administrator, open Control Panel/User Accounts and delete that account. You should be asked if you want to retain that user's files. Say "No".

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Sorry. The thread has gotten so long it's hard to keep track.
Both my testers have been very accurate: i.e., computer fails , PS tests bad,. Replace PS, computer works.
I do have a volt meter, but i use it very seldom since these things are usually very clear cut. Testing takes time (Money) and I'm not really an electronic tech.
I'm sure the example you cited is possible, but I've never run into it.
Of course, I've only replaced 10 or so PSs, so I bow to your greater experience.
Question: in some instances, with a bad PS fan I've just replaced the fan. This is usually when I'm working with a cheapskate, or for free. Is that a standard practice, or a bad idea? It hasn't bit me yet, but I've wondered about it.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

You could settle this with a power supply tester, available at many stores-I got one online and I've seen them at Office Depot and Radio Shack for $10.00-$15.00.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

This is very cool software that allows you to run a different operating system(s) on your computer. It's called "virtual" because it runs in memory, not from the HD. It's not like dual booting or parallels, for instance.
It's not hard to setup, but it was a real dog on my laptop, which is the only place I've tried it.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

That looks OK, but you don't need to bother with Recovery Console. Just format the drive when Windows prompts you. As he says, be sure you pick the correct partition if you have more than one.
Just foolow the Windows prompts carefully and you should have no problem.
What kind of PC is this?

"Too much shit"?
I's considerably easier to delete than to reformat. but different strokes...
A reformat and reinstall should go smoothly if done properly, so I'm concerned that you may have erred somewhere along the way. I was wondering if you had a hardware problem that led you to reformat.
Maybe open the case and look for dust bunnies, etc.
Something is making this happen and we don't know what it is.
