Well if you can get both drives working I would install XP on the bigger drive and leave ME on the smaller one.

if you cable to the CD drive has a spare connection put the smaller one on that and put the bigger hard drive on another cable.

Could you tell us what you ultimately want ie, ME on 3gig drive XP on the other and dual boot etc...

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

This may not solve the problem but instead of having two hard drives on one cable try putting one on the same cable of the cd/dvd drive, or have you done this?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

some Memory modules are design too run together. If you would have mentioned earlier about the colour differences you problem would have been solved earlier but never mind...

Too run together the modules must be of the same type(size & speed). Mother boards usually have different coloured slots for memory if they are to run together.

I like Ubuntu too. Its my favorite flavor of Linux.#

Try MPlayer.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

They don't make dreamweaver or photoshop for linux.

But you can use them using Wine or find an alternative.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

It may seem to run flawlessly but if something essential is stored in memory it could crash. Something like an internet browser may use a bad part of memory and it glitches for a second but if system critical program uses a bad part it may crash.

If it is under warranty give em a ring and see what they say. Really they should't be that many errors.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Are you sure that the cd/dvd drive is at the top of the boot order in BIOS?

Is there no option to select boot device? (My PC has a F8 option to selct boot device)

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

memtest tests your RAM. There must be something wrong with that. Try taking a stick out if there is more than two.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

No problem, only it will run at 266 MHz only...

Thats true but it would be a bit slower than PC2700 though -but it would work. How much RAM have you now and what speed is it?

If you do upgrade it is better to have two of the same size and speed.
If your after 2GB get a kit of two 1GB etc...

- hope this helps.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Did you try swapping the sticks of ram?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

try cleaning the disc and check whether your cd drive can read it...or check whether BIOS still detect your cd drive..

Yes I would do the above. Check if the CD drive is recognised in BIOS try pressing DEL or F2 at boot up to enter BIOS. If it turns out the CD drive is knacked then they are not to expensive.

Try the bootable CD in another computer. Or are you saying the CD loads but doesn't progress to the installation stage?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Okay then, I can say that you can't use it as an ordinary USB port.

Earlier I was assuming;

1. PS/2 device -> USB converter -> USB port

If you after more USB ports try a USB hub.

- Hope this helps

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I have a connector ps2 to usb port. Can I use that usb port as a regular USB port?
I know that they are for usb mouse and keyboard but can I use it for a flash driver or some other device?

Are there any other types of devices that could use the ps2 port?

You make it sound like you have connected a ps/2 device to a USB port via a ps2/USB converter.

Which is it?

1. PS/2 device -> USB converter -> USB port
2. USB device -> PS/2 converter -> PS/2 port

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Just a quick question are you after plugging USB devices into a PS/2 port?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hello,

Are you asking can you use the USB ports that the mouse and keyboard are plugged in for things like flash drives? If you are then most likely you can; try it.

If you have PS/2 ports for keyboard and mouse avaliable why not use them and free up 2 USB ports.

- Hope this helps

Holding down the power buttom always works. However, by not shutting down automatically, the computer will not hibernate nor allow me to do a System Restore!

Have you tried entering safe mode?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

That is business GB compared to Computer GB.

1,000,000,000 bytes is one Gigabyte. You hardrive should have about 500,000,000,000 bytes. But Windows calls a Gibibyte a Gigabyte. A Gibibyte is 1,073,741,824. So there appears to be a loss in space.

This may be confusing but this may help explain better.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Have you tried holding the power button down?

Perhaps remove Norton 2009 and run CCleaner.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

How many sticks of ram do you have? If you have more than one try swapping them about and try one at a time.

Have you tried using a DIV for your navigation aswell. I use this for my site and the links don't exceed their borders.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Can you post your CSS?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Have you tried another monitor or tested to see if the current one works?

Do you have a graphics card aswell as onboard graphics? If you have both try removing the graphics card and see if it works.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I don't think they are compatable. You could try it though boot from pro and select repair; I don't know if it will work. If they aren't compatable it should say.

I would get a linux live CD and back up any data you want. If you could get hold of an XP home CD it would be much better, you only need to repair it.

If you can't and if your system specs are quite good you may be able to run windows 7 RC.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hello

Do you know how to use CSS?

I use <DIV>'s.

in your case in the CSS I would try...

#column1
{
margin-left:0px;
width:10%;
height:100%;
position:absolute;
}

#column2
{
margin-left:10%;
width:80%;
height:100%;
position:absolute;
}

#column3
{
margin-left:90%;
width:10%;
height:100%;
position:absolute;
}

Then in the HTML...

<div id="column1">
<!--content here -->
</div>

<div id="column2">
<!--content here -->
</div>

<div id="column3">
<!--content here -->
</div>

I am not sure if it will work as you want but it will be something similar too this.

- Hope this helps.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

If you get a CD you may be able to repair XP.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Okay can you tell me where is stops and tell me what is says.

I suggest entering safe mode with command prompt and type chkdsk /r - This will take quite a while, this will repair some errors on disk.

Do you have the XP CD?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hey guys,

I have had a problem with my laptop where when started up the screen remained blank however i fixed this problem via a post on the forum so thanx for that....

....but now when the laptop is booted up it goes to the Toshiba screen where you can press F2 to go to "Setup" or F12 to go to "Multiboot" then it will go into the "Window XP" Screen with the green loading bar however soon after this the screen goes blank and remains like that despite leaving it running for a while..

im not the greatest pc user out there unlike alot on here altho if im shown/told what and ho to fix things then ill have ago, but please try not to get too technical on me will you lol

anyways thanx in advance for any help you guys throw my way

Mouse

Hello Mouse,

Have you tried safe mode? Press F8 after the startup screen and before the windows loading screen.

- Let us know if you can enter safe mode.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

hi all , I have installed ubuntu 9.04 , dual boot with xp , ubuntu can read the xp files but window xp does not see linux ( ext4) . does any one know of any ext4 driver for windows xp ?
thanks

I don't think there is any mate, I use an intermediate partition to transfer files both ways. You can have a partition of NTFS or FAT32 i think.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

If BIOS detects then It could be a windows issue.

Try going into BIOS change nothing and quit and save changes.

Is the OS XP or Vista?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

If the HAL error persists then check out this link Here.

If you manage to fix it I suggest running that backup pretty soon.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Alright, now we know a bit more.

Can you go back into the recovery console and type chkdsk volume: /r replace 'volume' with the drive letter or just try typing chkdsk /r this should repair some errors on disk.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

fixmbr only fixes the master boot record data will not be affected.

I Like to use Ubuntu. Download the .iso and burn it to CD using ImgBurn then boot using the CD and copy the files you want to external hard drive.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Yes I think that will work.

But if doesn't work you may have to reinstall the OS, if it comes to this then you can back up your data using a linux live cd.

Or If you have a large hard drive you could install XP on another partition and transfer the data over.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Boot order looks all right. RAID can be excluded as you are after booting from hard drive.

Can you get into safe mode or anything by pressing F8 after the POST screen?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I would expect it to be under Advanced. Whilst you are in BIOS can you check that the hard drive is still in the boot order near the top in the boot tab.

If we can't sort out the problem I recommend getting a linux live CD and copy the files you want to an external hard drive.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Right...

Try entering setup(F2) and see if there is an option for testing hardware and select hard drive.

The last option will be to reinstall XP but leave that option till later.

Do you have important data on their you want to save?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Okay...

If you have the XP cd have you tried using that to fix XP? If the Hard drive test passed, try fixing it.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

no usb devices connected no, what do you mean by a hard drive test?

If you enter BIOS there may be an option to test the hard disk try pressing DEL / F10 / F11.

The test will take some time.

Something else to try, have you any bootable CD's like Linux, if you do try them.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hello,

Do you have any usb devices connected?

Can you do a hard drive test from the BIOS?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hello

Does the BIOS detect that you have 2GB of RAM?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Okay, bet that cost a bit.

Don't forget to mark this as an expensive solved then.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I have used AVG and Comodo. Comodo has firewall and antivirus (you can choose to have both or one). I use both and have no problems with them.

- Hope this helps

Are you sorted with anti malware and firewall?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hello,

I would say if you want no more than 4 partitions on a drive then format it as primary. Otherwise if you want more than that then format it as logical.

I would advise formating as primary as I think having to many partitions is messy.

Chris Nicola commented: Helpful reply. +1
Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Can you verify the CD please.

Download ImgBurn . Install it.

Run it. Click on verify disk.

Then select thesource CD.
Then select the image file to verify against.
Then click on verify.

Lets us know the results.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

You can have four primary partitions on a hard drive. Which means you can have up to four primary partitions on each hard drive.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

So is the data you want on another partition?

Because if you use the system restore disks it may format the drive and then install vista. If you can can get a linux live CD you can backup some of the data to an external hard drive and then format the drive and reinstall windows.

This is what I would try anyway hope this helps.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hello, have you tried reinstalling Ubuntu? You may have removed the GRUB. Now you have tried using the recovery cd's you may have erased the data from the partition windows is in.

If this doesn't work try formatting the entire drive (all data will be lost) and use the recovery disks.

Let us know how it goes.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I have the previous version of ubuntu and all i had to do was put the cd in and it automatically booted without having to press any keys.

did you do verify the file you downloaded by checksum?

Do you turn vista off completely not hibernate or anything like that?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

To get the BSOD message press Windows key+break. that should bring up system properties. Then click on the Advanced tab then settings in startup and recovery. Untick automatically restart.

Whilst your in the system properties how much RAM does it say you have?
