Could you please provide us with a screenshot of what happens. The control panel when you click on the item and the error message.

Do you have the original XP CD and have you tried using system restore to a point before the installation of the labeling software?

Have you run a virus scanner and anti-malware ?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Do you have any Idea what the error is? Does it display an error and then turn off?

What OS are you using?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Have you made any changes or installed an updates?

Have you tried restarting the computer to see if the error is consistant?

I've just bought an external monitor for my laptop and use an external mouse and keyboard but because of problems which may be unrelated I'm wondering whether it is okay to have the laptop closed while it is operating? It takes up much less space that way when I don't need access to the keyboard.

I agree with m54071. Don't forget to make sure the laptop isn't set to go into standby/sleep or hibernate when you close the lid.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

ok, well then how do you know if the CHKDSK passed or not? Will it tell you if there are errors somehow?

I have no idea may tell you. I would expect it to report any bad sectors though, I have heard that it reports the error in hex but there is only one way to find out. searh for that 'wininit' file it can't harm to just look at it.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I think there is a log file in the event viewer called 'wininit' but I am not sure if it will be useful.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Do you know what these files are?

If you really know you don't need them you could go to the extreme of creating an extra partition moving the folder there and format that.

do you think this would work?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

It doesn't seem likely. The internal interface is SATA, and I doubt there's any way to adapt it.

I agree, SATA is Serial transmission and ATA is parallel transmission you would need a converter. This would be okay for a PC but a for a laptop I don't think so.

Sorry you are going to have to buy another HDD. You can use the other hard drive in a PC though.

- SATA
- Laptop hard drive (2.5 inch)

Have you tried to reinstall the operating system yet?

Seems to me that windows can't load because it isn't configured for your system.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hello

Maybe you have an overheating issue if you are waiting some time before being able to turn it back on.

And this thread shouldn't be here maybe in XP forum or Virus forum.
But I am sure someone will move it

- Continue to post to this thread don't create another.

I think if Kaspersky internet security 2009 has anti-spyware and anti-malware components then I think your computer should still be reasonably secure.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

How much RAM and modules do you have?

Try reseating them if that doesn't work try using one module.

you did apply thermal paste when you installed the new processor didn't you?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hello, have you got the option show filename extension selected?

have a look under tools > folder options >view (tab) and select the 'Hide file extension for know files'.

I suspect that when you enter the new filename it you don't include the extension, probably .mp3.

Has this helped?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

No. I install the WINDOWS 2000 whilst the the hard disk was in another PC ?

Windows was installed on a different computer. We are better off waiting a reply before suggesting ram issues.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

You can try deleting it from there.

Use DEL filename (include the path eg C:\myfolder\somefile) to delete files.

Use RMDIR foldername (include the path) to remove folders.

I think you can only delete empty folders. So try DEL foldername to delete the contents and then RMDIR foldername.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Did you install 2000 whilst it was in this computer?

I think a network drive is seen as an actual hard drive by the computer. These can be used at organizations.

A network place I think is places available on the network that you can connect to.

A network folder is a folder that can be view and/or accessed across the network.

I know that a network drive can be useful if you have many users, then they can have their own space that belongs only to them.

Or a network folder could be useful at home for sharing files across the network.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Tell you what can you take a picture of the cd drive for us?

It could prove most useful.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

You can type DIR at the command prompt through windows or safe mode with command prompt. DIR lists Directories AKA folders.

for example,

If you start cmd prompt and it says:

C:\>

and you type

C:\> dir

it will list all the top level folders.

you can navigate to where the folder should be by typing

cd Folder name

then type dir to list the folders in that one.

Do you know if it is getting power? Does the light flash?

Try entering BIOS and see if you can see it. Try pressing something like delete to enter BIOS, as it boots up it should say press such a thing to enter BIOS or setup. Exit and don't save changes when done.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Can you turn the volume down and access the media player at the desktop or is it the buttons on the laptop that are not working?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hello, Try this link for the driver Realtek driver download

Select your operating system and which site to download from.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Have you tried uninstalling IE8 and reinstaling IE7?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I have an Advent 5431 and inserted a Buddy Holly DVD which will not play, will not eject manually nor when "instructed" by the computer.
Any ideas of how I can get it out without using a can opener?
Dave (dranoel2009)

Hi is there a small hole on gthe front of the drive?

If so if you insert a thin object like a paper clip it should eject.

Have you tried removing it at boot up?

I would recommend getting any of the 9 series graphics card from Nvidia. Have a look at the ratings Nvidia Series 9. Better off going with 9600 GT or better, You will have to look you self for prices I am in the UK and work in pounds.

Things to look out for

Core clock speed > 500MHz
Memory clock speed > 800MHz
Shader clock speed > 1500MHz
Memory > 512MB (GDDR3 is better than GDDR2)
Memory interface > 256-bit

This is my thoughts, I would find out how graphics cards work before buying.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I think hard drives store data across the hard drive with no concern to storing from center to edge. If your using XP go to disk defragmentation and you will most likely see files or part of files stored across the disk. If files were stored sequentially every time a file like a word processed document is added too, the new part would have to be written elsewhere on disk making it inefficient. The disk finds enough space to store a file and puts it there.

Don't forget you can delete files on a hard disk leaving spaces, the spaces left may not be big enough for some files so they would be stored at the next avaliable space(avoiding defragmentation were possible).

Hope this helps some.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

What graphics card are you using?

Have you tried updating those drivers?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Can you roll back the driver to a previous one?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Okay then.

On the desktop right click.
Click on NVIDIA control panel.
Then select Set up multiple displays. (Have a look a the image I have)

Here you can setup your display's(I only have one, you should have two). I would suggest disconnecting the external monitor until windows starts up. Don't forget their maybe a switch monitor button on the keyboard like 'fn F4'.

Hope this helps.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Also, I only removed the display driver. I'm not supposed to remove the ethernet driver, right?

Don't remove the ethernet driver.

When you click on the installer does the Nvidia installation window come up?

The specification may be helpful to determine if you have the correct driver. I would not have removed the driver, you could have just downloaded the new driver and the would take its place.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Is this folder empty?

Is there something that you have downloaded in there?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Are you trying to delete it via windows Explorer?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Okay can you tell us the version of windows, Service pack 1,2 or 3.

Also can you give us the specification of your machine, your family's as well there maybe something similar in the two.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

So after you extracted the files you click on the installer?

What graphics card are you using?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

You can download programs from another computer as long as you download the right file for the system you install the program on.

"-5003:0xffffec75"

Does this error come up by itself or as a result of attempting to install the driver?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I assume your using Vista? What graphics card are you using?

I am thinking that the laptop isn't setup properly. You should be able to configure monitors with whatever program is used with your graphics card. You can appropriately number your monitors, set up resolutions etc...

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Yes, Have you tried pressing F8 as soon as the boot up screen goes try pressing F8.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hi, Have you tried installing the driver in safe mode?

Some startup programs don't run in safe mode. I would download the drivers disconnect from the internet/network and restart the computer and start in safe mode press F8 before windows loads. Then install the driver.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I think your right bad connection. A Monitor should bypass the problem no harm in trying. Don't forget some modern TV's have a PC monitor connection maybe you don't have to buy a monitor.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Is this for all .exe's or a particular one?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Can't you configure the grub manually. I know OpenSuse lets you configure the GRUB. If you install this "belinux" you may be able to reconfigure the grub and reformat the partition if it goes wrong. But I think the GRUB should pick up the old boot paths.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I am assuming that you are using XP. XP can only be updated to direct 9.0c.

Have you tried something else that requires DX 9.0c. Another game for example.

Go to start >> run and enter dxdiag this should tell you the version installed.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

You can stop the Program compatibility assistant if you want to;

Go to the run command or (windows key+R) and type services.msc. Scroll down to Program Compatibility Assistant and double click on it and click Stop. Then change the startup to Disabled. Try the EXE again.

- This should stop the pop-up, if you want it back do the reverse.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I meant right click on the .exe. For instance for you I would expect it would be the python executable.

This popup, have you just installed python?

You may have to install it as an administrator. Then you may be able to run the program with normal user rights.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Have you tried right clicking on in and untick run as administrator or maybe changing file permissions?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I would install vista on the SATA drive though, its supposed to be faster than PATA.
