There a some 20 cities running trials on BLP, and the most exspensive I've found so far was $40, the cheapest at $20. BLP does have an inherent problem of radio interference because the power lines aren't shielded like cable or telephone lines. Because of these interference problems BLP can't be used in sensitive area such as military installations. One town in Pa. has disscontinued their trial stating that it wouldn't produce enough revenue with only a 1.6 potential client base. Living in a rural area myself I would love to see Pacific Gas & Electric try it, where I'm living the only option is a satelitte hookup @ $60. plus a month...not an option with my budget.

Hi mechmike and welcome to Daniweb.

No, the modules don't need to be from the same manufacturer, I would stay with one of the major manufactureres like Corsair, OCZ, Kingston, GeIL, Crucial. If you go to any of their sites all you have to do is enter the requested information about your computer and they will suggest modules that will be compatible with yours.

The installation procedure is pretty straight forward, I have included a link that should help you. One of the things that you will read about is electrostatic discharge (ESD), basically all you need to do is to discharge yourself before you handle the module, this can usally be done by touching the metal side of the computer case.

http://www.ehow.com/how_895_install-ram.html

If you only use your compter for the internet, email, and some office applications, then another 256MB will give you 512MB which will make your computer run faster. If you are going to be into some serious gaming or video then you should think about that 512MB module, most serious gamers use 1GB.

If you have any more questions please include the make and model of your motherboard, this will make it easier for us to help you. Let us know how the upgrade goes.

bmikey...welcone to Daniweb. Could you please probvide us with the exact error code?

First off, welcome to Dandi web. Adding you thread to someone elses isn't the best way to ger help, especsially on a older thread, people tend to ignore these. The only reason that I'm reponding is because I was active in the thread and was notified by email that there had been another post to this thread. If you start you own thread you will get a much better response, and won't be hijacking anyone elses thread.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

You can also use dvds for data, more capacity than cd, and a lot less expensive than a 512mb flash memory.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Have you tried using other burning software, like Nero, Roxio, or there are some that are free like Gear. This may not solve your current problem, but may provide a way around it. I see that you only have sp1, I understand that there are some compelling reasons to add the sp2.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Have you tried to delete it in safe mode?

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

I still believe that you might have some success if you explained this to an administrator or manager of the site, they generally want to help, you won't know unless you try. lol

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

I'm guessing from your discription that this is an older machine, if this is the case and it smoked, it may not be worth investing in.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

I'm not clear on just what is happening here, but it sounds like you have closed an account on your computer and are trying to start a new one with the same site, if this is the case, most all of those places use your email address to verify you account, and if you are trying to open a different account with the same email address that you have used before it shouldn't work without the help of a site manager.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

I had read both of those, and laughed and cried through both of them. If we are going to study inteligent design, should we also look at the possibilty of co-creation and our missing link, ie. aliens? I'm not a proponent of this belief, but it is thought provoking that genetically we have traced our ancestory back to a specific geographic location, but can't find anthropolgical evidence supporting the complete evolution.

Actually...it's an older Simtech Audio card, there may be a driver for it out there, but it's going to take time and patience to find it. You could start here: http://www.driverguide.com/boards/sound-cards9/

btw...try googling it, it does work, that's where this came from.

This is an excerpt fron the Weekly Standard.

http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/003/264xqezm.asp

The Ninth Circuit's decision was met by sharp criticism when it was announced last year. After all, there were few precedents for such a ruling. The Supreme Court has ruled in the past that ceremonial references to God in public places and institutions do not represent an establishment of religion. The Court has never blinked, for example, at the use of Bibles in courtrooms or the phrase "In God We Trust" on our coins or even the singing of "God Bless America" in public places. Yet the Ninth Circuit's ruling, if upheld, would almost certainly be applied to these situations, too; indeed, the plaintiff in the case, Michael Newdow, has argued for precisely such an application.

The point here is that our constitution provides us with the right to take this kind of action, is he right to do this, does it need to be fixed, I honestly don't want to go there because either he hadn't thought this out to its entirety, or he did and doesn't care about the ramifications.

As for the "Scope II" trial, it's sad that in a school system with 3700 students, 11 parents can bring in the American Civil Liberties Union with enough legal talent to force a local court to make an unnecessary precedent that could effect schools nation wide.

Here's a little lite reading. :cheesy:

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Actually, it's still being argued, but there is the possibility of some colateral damage if it does.

"Circuit Judge Ferdinand Fernandez, who agreed with some elements of the decision but disagreed with the overall opinion, said phrases such as "under God" or "In God We Trust" have "no tendency to establish religion in this country," except in the eyes of those who "most fervently would like to drive all tincture of religion out of the public life of our polity."

"My reading of the stelliscript [majority ruling] suggests that upon Newdow's theory of our Constitution, accepted by my colleagues today, we will soon find ourselves prohibited from using our album of patriotic songs in many public settings," Fernandez wrote.

"'God Bless America' and 'America the Beautiful' will be gone for sure, and while use of the first and second stanzas of the Star Spangled Banner will still be permissible, we will be precluded from straying into the third. And currency beware!"

This was taken from the following article.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

If the supreme court orders the phrase "under God" out of the pledge, what's next, the phrase "in God we trust"? Now where have I seen that phrase before? Oh yeah...on all of our currency!

What ever is the current hot item will be old in six months, for instance, I was looking at purchasing a NEC 3520a last year at this time for about $65.00, now you can buy its newer version 3540a for $39.00. You ask your self why, HD-DVD and Blu-Ray DV are on their way. I would go with what you are familiar with and can afford to replace every three to four years like most people now days.
The build that you have listed is a good machine. I'm not into gaming, but as I understand it you would be better served with a 200GB or larger HDD.

Thank you goldeagle...that was a point that I wasn't sure about, I had problems adding a slave drive with my new Maxtor ATA, there was some controversy about being able to use cable select for both, or one having to be master and the other slave. :o

Oh, and SATA HDDs do not have any jumper settings to be configured...

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Did you transfer the old hdd to the new machine? If this is the case then attach the second IDE (middle) connector to the old hdd, you will also need to change the jumper position on the rear of the old hdd from the master position to the slave position. You may need to change the BIOS to recognize the slave unit.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

What position is the jumper in on the rear?

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

If it is this new it's still under warranty, don't play with it yourself, take it back and remind the tech that the most common practice in trouble shooting these types of problems is to change out the units, data and power cords, DVD, and PSU, and that the manufacturer is paying the bill. As far as setting a fire under their arse for a quick repair, Good Luck!

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Sell it and invest in a new laptop. If your notebook is a Latitude CSx H500XT, then it's upwards of five years old, and only has one memory slot with a max 256MB, and no CD-RW.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

He has 256MB, first post of threaed.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

According to a Dell tech the newer Dimension CPU fans are regulated by a thermistor and fan speed control, but without the model number she couldn't be sure. Nothing like a clear and concise answer.

Hard drives are electromechanical devices, and they break down. At the risk of being a smart ass, the term for this type of failure is hysteresis. It doesn't really matter whether it was a Western Digital, Maxtor, or a Seagate, if you look at the failure rates of each major manufacturer and graph these I doubt you find anyone of them to be any worse than the other. I recently had my six year old 40GB hdd die, and the general consensus seems to be...go for the best deal with a major manufacturer.

This also is free and will not only tell you what you have but also will show any obsious failures and make recomendations.

Hit him right between the eyes with a bill for your computer! The guy has the balls to rent a potential fire trap like that, the least he should be responsible for is the repair or replacemnt of your computer. Is he evicting you or are you leaving under your own schedule? If the local inspectors opperate like they do here in Ca. he may well have a healthy electricans bill before he can rent that place again. If it were me there I would be having a three legged race to my favorite Proctologist with a deserving party. Sorry this turned into such a can of worms for you.

I am not of a litigious nature, but you should get some form of compinsation from this. Like I said, bill him for the computer, and if you paid any of the elecrticians make him reimburse you for that also. If they refuse, take them to small claims court...as an electrician you can take this legal advice for what it's worth.

Thanks chrisbliss18...I like Asus better anyway, I guess I'll have to go without my meds for a while

Does your BIOS recognize the SMART as good? If Power Max said it's dying...back up all your information you can and plan on buying a new hdd in the near future. I'm curious as to why the SMART system didn't give some indication of a failure. You might also look in the event viewer to see if there have been other disk events.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

I don't know much about laptops, but on my cd-rw there is a jumper that had to be set as master, it might be worth a look.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

If it's a pci make sure it's plugged in properly.

You should be fine, as I recall xp only requires 128MB of RAM. If you do go with xp be sure to install the sp2, it's very important.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Thanks goldeagle and chrisbliss18...one of the advantages of the Biostar is that I can still use the AGP card from my old unit, I would be more interested in a board with on board audio and video if I'm going to spend more money. I'm already looking at another $42. for a video card with this board. I have a total of $200. to spend on this and it looks like my Antec 300W PSU may not be enough for this system.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Some fans have thermal regulation, and I know of people who don't turn thier computers off except when they work on them.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Hi goldeagle...I looked for the MSI 7135 at newegg and tiger direct without luck, do you have a link for this board?

AV...anti virus, in this case your McAfee. If you can't get into the control pannel try going into start > seach > search for files > enter McAfee and then serch now. In the results section look for the McAfee file > right click and make an icon of this ( you may get a pop-up message saying something like it can't create it here...ignore it and go on) it will show up on the desktop. Then see if you can use McAfee in the safe mode to deal with your problem. As to a HJT, yeah it sounds like you should do it now, there are some things in there that if you don't know what you are doing could seriously mess up your OS, so download it and run a scan, don't try to do any repairs! Copy the results and send it to the Viruses, Spyware & and other nasties forum. Someone there with the proper trainning will be glad to help you.

Dang! A blast from the past. I solved most of my problems over the last two months by replacing my floppy disk drive, cd-rom, and my hard drive, not all at the same time...as they died. It's all good, heck...I'll have a new computer by the time I replace the mobo, cpu, ram, and the psu.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

I would run all of the suggested programs, they are not redundant. I have run spyware s&d and then spyware doctor after and had it find problems that the other didn't. You should clear out your cookies on a regular basis if your on line very much, you would be surprised at how many of the items spyware and adaware find that are in the form of cookies.
