any luck?
do you still need some help with this?
you can connect all three to the net. it is easy.
(1st be sure you have a LAN connection to the internet. if not you will need a "modem router" compatible with your service provider)
before you rush out and do this (is is mostly an overview) get back to me with:
*service provider?
*type of modem you connect with?
*type of connection from your modem to your computer?
*types of PCs, operating systems, and whether you have or want wireless
*distances, walls, floors between pcs?
otherwise the setup is fairly straightforward.
grab a router and some ethernet (cat5, straight through type) cables, one for each PC
on the back there are 5 ports normally. 4 the same, one marked differently.
the internet goes into the different port.
connect the ethernet cables to the PCs, these go into the other ports, any order is fine.
run your network wizard (start-control panel-network setup wizard) on each computer. you want to select the "This computer connects through another computer or residential gateway" or something, then select computer name, select "turn file and printer sharing on" and that should set you right.
the computers might want to reboot.
that's the basic method. before you do though it would pay to get all your connection settings from your computer. and run system restore (create a restore point) before you start in case things don't work and yo need to …
I am guessing you are running xp?
first, ask her if she has added a secure key. I am guessing that she has - probably to keep you (and others) out? :-)
XP and previous versions of Windows do not automatically configure the security settings. It must be done manually.
XP instructions:
First look closely at the wireless router in the Wireless networks dialog(start-control panel-network connections-wireless). does it say secure connection, and have a little padlock? you will need to find out the following from your sister.
network authentication(128bit, wep, wpk, wpk2 etc)
security type (aes, tkip etc)
and the network key(password)
go to the sidebar in the wireless dialog, go advanced settings, go to the wireless tab, click on her router, click properties, and all that info you have goes in the boxes.
If you cannot get that information then I would suggest that you should not be trying to access that router in the first place. Note that DaniWeb does not support such conduct in anyway shape or form.
Let me know how you get on...
in the wireless
Ummm.
1st thing to try is open Windows firewall and untick the no exceptions box.
does that work?
Have you updated your antivirus or firewall programs? Installed new security software? They could cause this. try turning them off temporarily and see if that works (you should be able to disconnect from the net at this point, we are dealing with the internal networks here.) MAKE SURE you turn the windows native firewall off, too (start-control panel-security),at the bottom is a link to windows firewall.)
now try it.
If that works, get back to me and I will show you how to configure your firewalls so that they talk.
IF not:
when you have done that, test it. if it works, great. if not then open your network wizard (start-control panel-network setup wizard) on each computer. you want to select the "This computer connects through another computer or residential gateway" or something, then select computer name, select "turn file and printer sharing on" and that should set you right.
Does that work?
That's great! Can you tell us what you tried so we know what fixed it?
I have run all the anti malware under the sun. I have disabled every single process at startup. System restore was not enabled. i keep getting an error that .../system32/aekkyo.exe was not found or something to that effect. I have done a search throughout the registry for the key that might activate this popup to no avail.
google gives a result of 2 threads. both have the same question.
maxed out the other search engines out there, also to no avail.
What did I miss, guys?
Thx, Hmx.
pretty true, looks bad. but if all that doesn't fix it I might have another thing or two to try before a reinstall, and some suggestions on how to keep all your data if you do reinstall.
that would be my first bet, too. try doing it without the router attached.
OK. I solved it all on my own. Thanks for the help?
For the others in the same predicament out there:
reset the router to default.
plug in all your networking stuff the way you want it. make sure that all your devices are talking to the router by going to it's home page.
on the main modem PC go
start-cntrlpnl-network-show all connections
on your modem open-properties-advanced-allow shared connection
start-cntrlpnl-networking-set up home or small office network (in the sidebar for folder options )
choose this computer connects directly to the internet or other PC's connect through it
choose your modem.
choose your connection
let the computer choose the settings
set the pc name etc
set the network name (must be the same on all pc'z)
hit go
it will probably want to reboot, do it.
run the wizard on the other pcs.
but select this pc connects to the internet through another pc or gateway in the first option.
too damn easy.
this will not work if your computer has a domain. I just found this out but haven't worked out how to rectify yet (haven't tried)
hope it helps.
feel free to contact me if you need any help with this. easy when you know how.

That's one awfully slow, awfully old computer! The IBM PC of 1981 was 10 times faster than that.
Thx. It was just a random number. Edit at will. I woke up this morning and my pc had grown a new one: 'my brain is faster than yours' i couldn't be bothered arguing so I stuck 'this monkey can hold a hammer' to my head. Side Note: My pc is behaving today for some reason.
Nope -- sorry but no one gets rep points here in Geek's Lounge.
really? Hey that's cool. I was just trying my luck anyway.
Computers are devices that enable men to make mistakes at 467000 cycles a second.
Hotmatrixx: congrats for bringing an impressive compilation!!
Thx :-)
(i hope you wern't being sarcastic :-( )
Is it worth a reputation point?
(gotta pull the plugs when you are new!)
"i had 30 dang viruses got rid of em all deleted them from quaritene i will do the online scanner now. and btw the problem has stopped but im gunna make sure they wont come back",
AND he hasn't been back for over a week?...
These were his only posts.(newbe poster, 2 posts total) he has been, got his help, and gone. logic dictates the suggestion, but don't quote me on that.
will it read other media under normal conditions? eg music cd's etc?
what is the CD you are trying to boot from?
if it is a netbook, with an external cd drive, you will also need to enable booting from a USB device
anyone there? I really need some help on this one please/
Let US know how you go with it, anyway.
@ jbennet,
Thanks for the reply. That is good to know. This is my first laptop and as a refurbished (eBay) machine, I wanted to ensure it was as it should be. It kind of ended up being a bit pricey, around $400 CAD after shipping and duty. But, so far it does seem to be a good machine. Just need to get the speakers working....
Cheers!
Jeromy
Hi Jeromy.
For the speakers, that is a new thread. but there is someone else with the same problem if you like you can look at my suggestions there...

by the way if it is useful, please mark this thread as solved when my comment is the last one - that way I get the credit for helping you. Thanxx
do yo have like... 10 computers connected to your network? or you could access your router and find where the dhcp pooling addresses start. 192.168.x.x are internal networking addresses and are invisible to the internet anyway.
mine would be on my car:

it probably has a power/ sleep button on it. if it is a particulrly flash board, it might have been having a major driver conflict. just some thoughts. try installing it on another pc without using the cd.
I've owned a set. It was a chineese copy bought off ebay for $1 (+$45 postage...) They are pretty good. Just make sure you have antivirus running because the set I got has a credit card stealing virus on them. Ipod has more functions - watch vids (on some), create, edit playlists, etc. The sunglasses just have a bunch of music on them and play it in order. you have a volume button or two, forward, back, play, pause, and (the coolest part) mine had a bluetooth to hook your phone up to it. it sould pause the music and take the call for you. they have an inbuilt microphone so you can leave the cell in the pocket. I loved them, but I bought them for resale, so they got resold. they also work like a standard usb pen drive - carry your files in your glasses!!! I should get some more, now that you mention it... I wonder if they go up to 8 gb yet?
hmm..i would figure that everytime you want to dock your laptop while you're at your desk, you want to charge the battery, use your laptop for some period of time before you undock. I can only imagine the standard design spec is to leave the battery so as to avoid the hassle of (1) unplugging your laptop all the time or (2) removing the battery when its full.
in other words, a circuit in the laptop would stop charging the battery when it was full...something wrong with my logic?
at this point, the battery is so toast, i just leave it plugged in all the time! a bit of a sacrifice for convenience
One would think that was a sensible idea... try telling asus that. they will probably jump on it and you will get... well, I couldn't possible say - but don't expect anything and you won't be dissapointed.
I have an ACER extensa 2000. batt life was around 2 h (5 yo notebook) but now I cannot get it under 45 deg celcius, the fan goes constantly and I am lucky to get 20 mins.
great. has that solved it?
How about uninstalling and reinstalling just the browser? rather than a reformat... some trojans are particularly nasty and make changes to the browser/other applicaition so that it doesn't work if they are removed, they overwrite and replace themselves over a critical process, and when you delete them, that process is no longer there. thus you are connected, but unable to display. if you got the virus causing the problem then reinstall the application. (back up your bookmarks and history and passwords first.)
I wonder what I could try to see if it is a codec issue?
Try downloading another player. I would recommend VLC player. It has most codecs and it solved my WMP issues... Ie No codecs available. He that does the same thing them most likely your data is corrupt.
Sorry!!
not driverdownload.com but www.driverguide.com
have you tried both of these drivers? (I would try) the realtech one first)
when you remove the cmos battery you need to leave it out for 20 minutes at least. there tends to be a residual power drain and the cmos doesn't otherwise reset properly, I have found.
the idea of renaming the files is so that malware on your pc cannot recognise them asAV progs and wont block them.
the best way to get a driver that I have found is...
(I am presuming that you are running a PCI sound card?)
- read the whole post to get all the info first.
1.Get the model number for your sound card
2. go to www.driverdownload.com and go thru the registration process, including the free offer... (if you look closely at the bottom you can continue without the offer) and then search your device through them.
sound card details:
do you have the box + manual etc with a model number?
or
belarc advisor from www.majorgeeks.com
(google "freeware device identifier" for more options)
or (less recommended)
open the box, pull it out and write them down off the card.
I suggest pulling the plug out, grounding yourself, and using an antistatic device if following this method.
gerbils method should solve it, but to stop the popups wiping you out, type into notepad first (start menu-all programs-accessories-notepad), then when complete, select all, (crtl-a) copy (ctrl-c). open your web browser, open a dialog, click in the box and hit paste (ctrl-p)
hope this helps. if so, will you add to my reputation, please? Gerbil gets the credit for solving this one though. ;_o
sorry, gerbil is right - it was mentioned... I was reading too fast again.
Would it be helpful if I run superscan and what is UPnP? Oh, and btw, it's a wired router.
I can't hurt to run SS, although I believe microsoft have
removed raw sockets support which now limits SuperScan and many other network scanning tools.
Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) is a set of computer protocols promulgated by the UPnP Forum. The goals of UPnP are to allow devices to connect seamlessly and to simplify the implementation of networks in the home (data sharing, communications, and entertainment) and in corporate environments for simplified installation of computer components. UPnP achieves this by defining and publishing UPnP device control protocols built upon open, Internet-based communication standards.
Have you had any success or any new devleopments?
excellent. just hit the "mark as solved" button on the thread so that others know you fixed it, and can either come here for help or know you don't need help at the moment.
she's right, you know...
two things you can try:
in SpyBotSAD you can open click on the trojan, then open a panel to the RHS that describes what it is, or you van go to SB website and use their search tool. (tried it, returns nothing).
ummm. create a system restore point then delete the thing.
when did this start happening? what happened previous? are you connecting through a router? do others have access to this pc? have you checked thesecurity settings are disabled inside ie/firefox - not someone playing a prank on you by denying all access to all websites? are you inside a network?
microsoft has created a fix for this error: go to the link below and check it out.
you had not specified the array type in your previous post. and your problems are symptomatic of split drives rather than mirrored ones. what else have you found so far that may help?
first, an UPC is no guarantee, especially if the modem is not plugged into it.
I am not super-familiar with RAID, but I do know how it works. basically it saves data across all disks using alogrithyms to restore bad data. if you remove one drive, then some of the data will be... missing.
you will need to run a RAID recovery tool. hopefully there is already one running on the computer right now. check in the little bar beside the clock. else you may need to find one. try freewarefiles.com or best freewaredownloads.com sorry, that is the limit of my knowledge on the subject. but at least you have a heads-up on what might have happened.
this thread below explains how raid works.
basically, you used a striped array and split the data. half of it is gone with the old HDD you threw out. you maight be able to recover it. but let me know if you need any further help trying.
just for right now, STOP changing or saving anything to that PC. it could cause problems if you want to recover the lost data.
Hi Guys,
I have tried both suggestions. at least my router recognises my PC as a router no. but still cannot share the connection. I have tried to enable ICS only to find that the settings are MISSING from my install. i fresh installed windows to get them back, still nothing. the other thing that is missing is my standby option. it just does not exist. I guesss I should start another thread...
but ICS does not seem to be present on my PC. If that is important...
please show me how to set those IP addresses up, etc, as a walkthrough for
a. host pc
b. router (generalisations ok, I know that not all routers the same)
c. client pc(s)
thanks guys,
CB
ahh... connecting two networks together, what routers do best! I will give it a shot. thanks. I was trying to set everything onto the same network.
everything is winXP at this stage. I don't know about the 2nd client pc yet, though. Could be vista.
I live remotely and have broadband via cell phone only out here. thus the usb cable and a parent pc are required. Do I need to configure anything on the host , ot the client pc's? do I plug the host into the Lan or Wan porthen done?
I have tried replying to this thread all day via cell and had no joy. on my pc again so I hope it posts this time.
i may have misunderstood, but if one NIC is working ok then the other has a fault. If it is a dchp time out then time it. Cutouts will be almost exactly the same length.
he the whole thing just reboots without warning real often it could be a cpu overheating. Google download and run hdd health or check in your bios if you know how. Let me know how it turns out.
Hi;
I am a dork because I should have come here before I bought the hardware.
I am now the proud owner of a Belkin Wireless N Router. (options over here are limited. high quality=$$stupid$$expensive).
I have a PC with a usb modem. I want to connect that to a router (via ethernet), then out of the router I want 2 pc's (ethernet) and a laptop that connects wirelessly.
Can I do that?
Did I stuff it up?
The only thing that I know is that I can't make it happen. any help would be excellent, please? thanks.
HI. start by having a little look here
http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/WGT624v4.asp
It gives you the default passwords and capabilities of the router you mention. The solution to your question depends severely on
a) the distances between router and PC's
b)the number of walls/floors/ and types of structures, eg glass, wood, concrete, and their thicknesses,
c)the capabilities of your router. I havent checked yours, but most support around 16 pc's wirelessly each. I am short on time right now, so go and have a little look and we can discuss this more, later. but that link should be a good start for you I think. or search www.about.com for some answers too. the tutorials are not great, but they are a starting point.
One more question. Will N be backward compatible with G ? I mean if i install an n router will some1 with a g adapter be able 2 access it ? Also i am told the range of N is LESS then g. Wouldn't that be an issue ?
Hey, budd. I thing you will find you are biting off more than you can chew on this one. what you should do is get a couple of big switches and go hardwired. Far less hassle for you. trust me.
N series are at least 3x more range than g. they are back compatible n.g.b.a series. (If anyone still has one of those archaic things.) Or better yet this is a hostel. set up a little internet cafe on each floor in the commons room, with 1 router on each floor, or maybe on on each 3rd floor if the router talks through the ceiling/floor. Just an idea. WAY easier to set up.
