hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

have you put security on it? since it was reset unless you put security on manually it is now an open network and ANYONE in range (<150m) can join in on your ISP for free!

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

Works fine for me on server 2003 and vista buis, then again im on a domain so maybe its diffrent

Works fo me too = XP pro, local PC. (standalone)

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

Dont be so quick to dive in. I dont warn peple until they mention music or something

There are many legal uses of torrents. Torrents are good for opensource projects for example as they save money on servers and bandwidth while following the open share and share alike philiosophy. Thats why youll find for most linux ISOs etc... the preferred download method is a mirror or bittorrent.

hey JB. I guess I should have left it for you. I just wouldn't want to see a great forum shut down for something silly. and yes, that is an awesome application for torrents. Had wondered why you hadn't bitten, though. thx.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

I say what I see. If you find my words offensive, then you find reality offensive.

I guess you had to be there.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

JB: I know, but for the purposes of it's all G.

(legal stuff I am adding to protect the DW community)

drmac: just so yoou know. Daniweb does not endorse any illegal activity, and it considers torrents as such. For that reason I would recommend that once your setup is sorted, you should add protocols to prevent torrent downloads. this can be done by adding torrent sites to your firewall block list. if you want to stop them at the entrypoint then you need either:
a router (has a firewall you can config)
or
to configure your connection to run through a proxy server that will filter the traffic. many sites do this free.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

Go to run
Type mmc
Add the certificates snapin by going file -> add / remove snap-ins

Always one to do it the easy way, don't ya? ;)

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

there is software out there that can save different configs for wifi as profiles, one for each country or what ever. to change the broadcast channel you normally go to network-show all devices/connections. rhtclk, properties. in the general tab, configure. then in the advanced tab, scroll to find IIBS channel or something similar.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

to clarify::

"What noise does a bee make when it is flying backwards?"

"It Goes "ZZUB ZZUB""

electricity makes the same sound. don't make me explain it any further or you will just kill it. ok?

Glad to hear you got it sorted out in the end.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

Bee Flying backwards. (ZZUB ZZUB)::ooh: icon_idea:

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

is that how its done.

...thats a bit easier.

they didn't show me THAT at TSHK (The Skool of Hard Knocks)

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

I am guessing it is a varsity or similar. and a router is a switch that connects different networks together. they are all on the same network, so a straight switch should be fine. and BTW Wireless is cheaper to set up and implement (if you have a clue or two) IMHO

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

i found that out, And the Best part is trying to get my refund out of them. VERY difficult to do. It failed me 5 times in a row out of 5 PC's. everest seems pretty good only tried ot once though.. it recognises chipsets of hardware and download to proprietry drivers for them.

now I use www.driverguide.com They have a lot of nag screens and such but it is a lot faster than trying to go thru the manufacturer, esp on older model stuff. I digress...

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

that's cool. i did put the RISKY warning up first.. have you ever tried plugging a USB in in the dark? the amount of arcing you can get is kinda scary. and it explains how it will fry something so bad. especially if it is from a powered device like a print server or an ext HDD.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

better yet, run an av over it

try www.malwarebytes.org

and i quote:

While Mozilla has three years worth of contract with Google left to run, it does put the Open Sauce browser in a vulnerable position.

What could trigger Google falling out of love with the Open Sauce outfit?

HA HA!!

open the the sauce, then what? put it on the hot faux??

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

hi. welcome to Daniweb. please expound? what happens exactly? what does the entire error message say?

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

that i think is the true answer to this question. i gives BB internet wherever you are. just be ware of cellular roaming rates.

i use a nokia 6121classic (because of the 900 HSDPA in NZ) to the same effect/ very economical, considering what it gives you, (it is cheaper than some land based rates over here, where we have the most expensive BB on earth. literally.)

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

cannot open one particular website Ebay.

My guess is you are on a network at work and they have blocked it.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

Hey, jbennet. sorry mate I have to correct you a little bit here. windows update on dialup takes 94 hours. without any dropouts.

I think what they are asking is can they turn off the PC while the pc is DOWNLOADING updates - this is fine. if you have automatic updates on it will resume from where it left off the next time you connect. (AU also slows down your connection a lot.) the only time you should NOT turn it off if if it is partway through INSTALLING these updates - and it will tell you this clearly when it does.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

Yea I had the same issue a while back when i ran drivergenius on a pc. it did the same thing to me. I just went into device manager (as above, found the display adapter and uninstalled everything except the vga controller. it was fine after that. then go and get a slightly older driver (probably more stable) and use that instaed. it isn't going to hurt your machine any.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

hey cohen.

I have been running ie7 on xp for around 6mo. just so you know. it works fine. ok i install it on pc's that are afraid of firefox (I love techniphobes) that aere having issues with ie 5/6. so it works fine. if that was your ?Q?

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

OK: if D: is a clone of C: and everything you want is on D: including all your files etc then this is easy.

go start-my computer. rightclick d:, rename it as 'good'
then rename c: as 'bad'

download and install xxclone onto d:
run it. from (good)
select (good): as source and (bad) as target.

NOT c: d:, because windows mixes up drive letters, but not drive names
go to cool tools, make bootable, make sure that the target is your good installation
select all three tick boxes, and start.

go back to the main menu (operation mode tab)

make sure source= good and target=bad
click start
read the warning.
be sure.
confirm it.

when windows starts next time, you will be able to select whether to load off "windows xp" or "xxcclone" (this is a dual boot menu)
select winxp
should be fine after this.

you can customise that menu from
control panel(classic mode) system-advanced-startup and shutdown-
select your default
show how long you want those items to display
easy peasy.

if things are not perfect on your good version, make them perfect before you start.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

are you constantly getting the same issue? or lots of different ones?

in the mean time run www.malwarebytes.org anti malware. select all, then remove, then reboot if needed.

if it still comes up, run a startup manager program (try glary utilities or cuper startup manager - both free) and get rid of anything that you don't need. look down each key to the end of the listing and see if it shows the run32.exe file you are hating so much. untick that key and it should fix it. there may be more than one key though so look at them all

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

most likely it is a virus type attack preventing safe mode from starting. if you can get into windows(normal) mode, run malwarebytes.org anti-malware on it. anything that it cannot remove then and there it will remove on the next boot. (basically the same as safe mode). once it is finished the reboot, safemode will likely work again, too. if neither is working then

a. slave the hdd to another pc and run AV software over it
b. run windows repair (if you have hte original winXP disks) but i recommend slaving it and backing up your stuff first.

if you don't understand that, please ask. it is easy enough to do.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

hey, jbennet, nice pic - I like it! I am not sure who you are asking, but I am running xp (all flavours) with SP3 (always) when I install those codecs.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

risky option: up to you:

take the heatsinc off the cpu, turn pc on for 5 seconds, (no more or fry cpu) and if cpu hot then ok if cold then probably fries with your motherboard, but still don't rite cpu off until fully tested.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

AHH- Before you do that, it could be an overhaeting CPU. Is the fan going hard? could be trying to cool CPU down. CPU not cooling because the CPU grease is dries out and heatsinc not working. open it up and apply grease. $10 tube, use a grain of rice worth, makes a cheap laptop if it fixes it. is the fan going? no? busted fan? CPU overhaets again.

well, 1st it should not be asking for those, unless

A: infected
B: was infected and AV prog removed files
C: someone built the install with Nlite, or otherwise made a light version missing some files.

if you are inserting the windows CD - is it a GENUINE WINDOWS XP CD or is it a RECOVERY DISC? a WXP cd should be ok, and would suggest the issues above. an Recovery disc will not work, as it does not have the "i386" file. it is a special image of a preloaded XP that will not work in this instance.

Try running an AV like www.MalwareBytes.org ant-malware (google it) then fix selected and roboot, try again. I have my doubts in this case though.

option two: this makes more sense to me:

use your WIN disc and FRESH INSTALL windows. do you really want all of someone else's junk on the PC?

if you don't want to do that then you can just:
a. /rename the documents/settings folder
b.run xp install disc, use the recovery option (NOT the recovery console) this will copy the i386 files back as they are meant to be.
c. put the D&S folder back.

hang on.. I reread that post. you said firmware. did you mean firmware? or did you mean the normal software you are supposed to install?

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

1. silly question:

did you set sound on MAX on the sofware you were using? WMP starts on half, for eg and can be hardly audible.

2. have you tried another set of speakers? maybe the ones you have a re bung.

3.google for the Realtek AC'97 Codec version A3.49 I have installed this on over 40 PC's and works perfectly.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

I think that if you need to move to a switch for that, rather than a hub. the reason is that a switch is far more efficient at data transfer - a hub kindof sends all data everywhere and all pc's pick it up and ignore what is not thiers, whereas a switch employs packet sniffing to only send bandwidth where it is supposed to go.

http://www.networkclue.com/hardware/network/switches-vs-hubs.aspx

explains it well.

you want one with bandwidth monitoring. I could not recommend one, I do not know what your networking requirements are.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

hey there JDsix.

this is what we need to know, plus some suggestions at the bottom to get you started.

I am in a far and foreign land, so I don't know who MTA is. what type of connection is it? ADSL? etc.

1. I need to know what your setup looks like. (there are a few ways to do it)

so:
does the internet go from the wall into a
modem + switch/hub? or into a router?

2. do all the PC connect into the LAN device? or does one have internet and the others use it as a 'gateway' to the internet?

basically I need you to start by telling me what hardware you have, and how it connects together.

2. The next thing is, have you ever had internet through this provider, or is this a new connection?

that's probably all i need to help you, so some suggestions follow...

1. establish the internet on one computer, make sure it is going. use whatever hardware/setup CD's came with the connection and get one online. This is to ensure that you HAVE internet, THEN we can put it all together.

once you have that (if not, let us know)

If you were given settings to make your connection 'work' - like bunches of numbers and stuff, then let me have them and I will tell you where to put …

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

That takes to much time, and the OS should automatically do it, itself.

Cohen

Cohen;

I recognise that you are good with the windows OS - I have seen some of your answers in the other sections of this forum. they are well though out, well explained, and the answers are logical and they work. I know, because you helped me out at one stage earlier.

I am not sure on your exact level of understanding with networking. So I tread cautiously here too. I by no means wish to turn this into a flame war. For the benefit of others who have this issue in the future, who may be reading this:

The issue is not going to be resolved by running the NSW because they are all connecting to the internet. it is assigning the IP addresses correctly, which NSW is designed to do. (or they wouldn't be getting online). The issue appears to run deeper than that, as they are being periodically kicked off the internet. I need to know whether they are losing just the internet, or the whole network. The problem appears to be a conflict between the switch, gateway, and the client PC's - probably a DCHP conflict or Lease Pooling issue. I need some more information from this guy so that I can troubleshoot it accurately

To Summarise:
NSW is probably already ok. they are connected.
probably the switch is set up to renew thier addresses every …

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

if you want to know whether it is the most efficient set up, then I would need a topogrphical physical map with the hardware shown.
include 2 maps. one with how the connections are now, including wireless coverage, and one showing where you need wireless.

A normal modem should not have anything to do with IP addresses, only if it is a combined router, switch or access point. I have a funny feeling someone has been playing with the settings and has changed the dchp allocations somewhere, or has turned of the ICS services, or similar on the main switch up the top. try plugging your laptop into the first switch and see if you get net from it there. (is everyone having problems or just some people, some times?) you should definitely not change the gateway settings in any of the switches - that is the "internet gateway" address. the main switch will have ip(192.168.0.1) or something, and everything else should have internet gateway as ig(192.168.0.1). it should have dchp on, everything else should have it off/ie set up as an access point.

the other thing is others may have silly setups on their laptops preventing access.- have they turned off their firewalls - they could be the issue, too. Once they are online they can turn it on again and it should auto configure for your network.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

Well you have tried your own best 4 ur company. The only advice i can give is that run "etwork wizard" on each system(u can get that at control panel) and follow the message as your company configure thier network.

Hey. thanks for giving him the tip, but It is a little bit more involved than just running the wizard. That is why I asked him so much info. or did you miss my post, maybe?

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

that's fine. But (AND I FORGOT TO MENTION) that BartPE will need a plugin to access the PC registry instead of it's own:

I think it is

http://www.bootcd.us/BartPE_Plugin_Details/383/Registry-Editor-PE-v0_9c.html

but it has been so long that I cannot remember for sure.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

in no particular order:

1. test the TV on something else. if it is still BW then the settings are in the TV somewhere (likely), or it is a BW monitor (unlikely)

2. plug the other monitor (the one that is working fine) into to GPhx card, if in colour then TV, if BW then card.

3. it could be that cable. either plugged in wrongly, ie in the wrong order - or it has a fault.

4. load the software that came with the gphx card and reboot (ifnot already installed) the settings vary a lot between cards, but you should find a, icon in the taskbar (by the time and date) for your card. go through all the settings that you can find and see if you can find it in there. set everything - check the profiles if it has them.

5. is the colour turned down on the monitor?

6. faulty card?

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

If that does not work then I have another trick or two that you can try.

Lovn' the "Blue Screen Of Death"
I get it all the time...

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

Yeah OK, I Missed it.

try this on for size:
(I hope you are running xp or you will need to find the equivelent registry entry for your OS. but everything else should be the same.

1. go here for a bit of important info on your registry:
http://www.easydesksoftware.com/regfiles.htm

2.Get your hands on a copy of the disk for your OS (I know XP needs at least SP1 on the disk. I have not tried this with other OS)

3. download BartPE Builder
website for info:
http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

for the download:
http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/#download

you will need to run BPE, let it add the files from the CD, create the .iso file and burn it to a CD.

boot off the CD.

BPE will prompt networking?. ok to say no.

hit go-run
type regedit
go to

localmachine-system-controlset001-control-crashcontrol -> AutoReboot (in the main pane)

double click, or modify,
set: valuedata as 1 or 0 - make it the opposite of what it is.

1 is reboot (ie 'true') and 0 is don't reboot.

also you could try in regedit
edit-find-
and type autoreboot

thats what it is for my system, anyway. XPPsp3

let me know how it turns out.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

I thought I just gave the solution to that problem?

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

When you get the tart in safe mode? you can go to the other options there using the up/down on the keyboard. one of them says

"Try last known good configuration"

did you select that option and try it?

(all credit to jbennet if this works)

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

hell, that is the hard way.

go start-control panel
go to classic view
go system, advanced tab.

click the startup and recovery-settings button.
click the edit button.

one of the bottom two lines will say vista, somewhere. delete the line you want to get rid of. ONLY DELETE THIS LINE!!!! or your whole system will crash. but it is safe to delete this line.

save and exit.

Voila!

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

Currently have 2 mice installed and working at the same time.

It appears that they are using the same driver.

Some times after re-boot, the PS/2 mouse does not work until the next re-boot.

Does this setup of having 2 mice operating at the same time create any computer operating issues?

OS WinXP Media SP2

no real issues, only the one you are having. I am guessing that it is a player game on one pc, or something like multiplicty for multiple moniters and the like? try updating the drivers on only one mouse (I would do the usb one) or grab a different mouse.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

I've seen that. It is caused by adding custom themes and junk like windowblinds.

first if you have a skinning program, uninstall it or run a different skin.
second (if that is not the case)

rightclick dektop
properties
themes tab
set the theme to "windows XP"
hit apply.
go to the appearance tab
put windows and buttons as "XP style"
set the other stuff that you want while you are there.
hit apply

you will then need to go to the desktop tab and reselect the picture you want in the background.

hit apply, then OK

let me know how it goes.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

To disable it you go:

start-control panel (toggle into classic mode)- system-advanced
hit the advanced tab.

under the startup andbla bla there is a check box for the auto restart on system failure.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

so let me get this straight.

browsers all work ok

other applications do not.

you say that you have been playing online games and the other bits do not work such as community?
*do the games play online?
*are they browser based?
*have you found any other info that might help diagnose this?

you are running through a router, how is your NAT set up?

have you always had this issue or is it new?

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

Hi I do not know your level of experience with networking so if you do not understand what I am asking please tell me.

does the switch connect to

the wall?
a modem?
a router?
a PC?

are you using a dhcp server in your network or do they have static IP? I think you might be trying to do both and that is causing problems

how many computers in your network,

are they all connected to the one switch?

Do they all drop out at the same time?

if you time each drop out, is it the same length eg does each pc drop out every 10 minutes, or every hour?

what operating systems are you running on your computers?

are they all doing it?

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

I have never played with a straight cable modem before (usually a combined modem router + a switch)so I don't know if I can be any help, although the rest of the network seems efficient.
first question:
have you had wireless connectivity in the past (ie has this been working up until now)
2nd: is your hardware all admion passworded?
3 have you tested the internet connection at the modem? ie pulled the cable out from the switch, put it in a laptop and tried to connect to it there?
4: have you got another modem that you could borrow from someone to test the rest of the network?

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

It sounds as though the sales guy might be right. BUT first, try this:

(I know you have said you have pressed default...)

unplug everything from the router. including wireless stuff if there is any (turn off wireless devices if you have to.). find the hard reset button. press it in for at least 15 seconds. (you will need a paperclip or something) the router will reboot. plug your internet in, and wait 30 sec to 1 min. your adsl light should blink then come on. plug in one pc to the router. another light should come on. run network setup wizard on that computer as follows:
(XP- other systems will be different but similar)
open your network wizard (start-control panel-network setup wizard) on each computer. you want to select the "This computer connects through another computer or residential gateway" or something, then select computer name, select "turn file and printer sharing on"

you might need to restart the computer.

if any of these steps don't go smoothly, let me know. but I do suspect a bung device. sorry.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

So :
internet into router
PS3 connects to router (wireless)
PC connects to router.

correct?

1. is the LAN cable from the Net plugged into the LAN cable on the router? (the one that is slightly different.)

2. reset the router. someone has changed the setings on it. unplug all the cables (leave the power on). find the rest button on the back or underneath and hold it in for 15 seconds. when the router reboots, plug your LAN back in, give it 30 seconds and see. If that works then great. if not then either your internal router settings need to be set for your service provider (I can help) or your router has given up.
