hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

the trick with slaving is that you need a second PC. you take your hard drive out of your PC and plug it into someone else's - then you can access it as if it was just another file on their PC. there are plenty of walkthroughs for this on the net, just make sure it is all nplugged from the wall first, and remember that all the cords etc can only physically be plugged on one way, so you should be fine. there are two types of hdd connectors, so yo will have to find the right type of PC. Pata or Sata. then grab everything off the PC and back it up while you can.

run AV over it as normal, along with chkdsk (start-my computer-<rightclick your drive>-properties-tools tab-error checking, select both boxes, then ok,ok, and manually restart your PC)

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

AHH... You are running SP1 I bet. update windows to sp3 (via windows update). maybe it needs .net framework 3, to work - and is not sayng so. download and install that while you are at it.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

Bit defender HAS an in-game mode that lowers the firewall settings but maintains AV protection. It's a one-click, too. (rightclick the taskbar icon, it's in that menu)

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

looking back, yes, that is how it seems. I did mean to reply to that post. but I didn't realise how badly we poached the thread.

CaperJack:
PM me when you start the new thread.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

solution? maybe. but not an easy one.

SYS restore for D: might be monitored, but maybe not on C:

In other words, D: might have SR enabled on both drives (therefore effecively backing up a copy of c to itself - not accurate, but will do for purpses of explanation)

but if C: does not have it enabled, then it has not been monitoring backups for itself.

One quick thought,

turn off pc
turn on, hitting F8

use "last good known config" or "last settings that worked"
choose your EN drive and hope.

or reboot, hitting F8
go safe mode, C: and see if it offers you a sys rest. from there?

I can't remember if that has been tried yet.

If not, I think you are going to need that XP, SP3 CD...

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

yea wel I just welled at sam and let him deal with the blade. I got better things to do.

In the mean time, anyone heard from Scraps?

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

whats that got to do with this thread?

Hey,

I was poksting off my cell Phone, and I must have got the threads mixed somewhere. please remove it (and this) at your discretion, JB. Thx,

hotmatrixx

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

have you tried:

boot from D:
start-accessories-system tools
system Restore
restore to an earlier time
?

i know you have looked at it, but have you used it?

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

hotmatrixx > "thats true but if it is turning itself off before it overheats it may not be damaged. " Before giving one's self false hope best to consider that intermittent, etc. service is of previous non-recoverable damage.

Having made necessary repairs to a sawmill's blade the sawmill's owner asked for a itemized receipt. The receipt read: Hitting bend in blade $10.00; knowing WHERE to hit it $90.00. The bill was duely paid, signed receipt said so.

Actually, I Ran a sawmill until '07 and they don't hit ém they cut, weld and grind ém these days. straightening a fold only weakens the metal.

but I digress.

My comment is not there in an effort to undermine yours - only to offer that all may not be lost. New CPU are expensive if the problem is the cooling fan needs grease Or the heat sinc needs de-dusting. Or what ever. I am only saying that a bust CPU is one possibility and there may be other causes - easier to diagnose and easier to remedy.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

do you get pink, too? Download a trial version of either aston or window blinds by star dock. Install and run it. Does that fix? Tip: find and install a 3rd party un install utility first. Plenty of freeware ones out there

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

if your d hp a alone of c then it would have a copy of the pst file for out look. Try opening out look after booting into d. If you find your emails then you could clone it back to c

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

i said to one client reboot the computer. So he did, steel caps and all

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

thats true but if it is turning itself off before it overheats it may not be damaged.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

if you know how, go into your BIOS and it might tell you how hot your CPU is: it shouldn't be higher than 45 d celcius (90F I think But Dont Quote Me)

BIOS is the panel you access when your PC says something like "press F2 (or DEL) to enter set up" when it boots. it will be under hardware somewhere. all bios slightly different so hard to tell. you might need to dig a little but dont change anything unless you know what you are doing or your PC might not boot.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

HI, Gerbil.

Thanks for backing off for me. I realise everyone's experiences are different. I am interested to find FF= GNU/open sauce (ask JB, inhouse joke) version of opera. so why is FF greater in popularity?

It would seem we have poached this thread...

New Kid On The Block

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

thanks man. spread the word ;)

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

REPLY PEOPLE REPLY!!! your feedback matters to me :(

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

if D is a clone of c:, do you need tour .PST file?

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

dude. I am speechless.
UMMM

are you the ADMIN on the account?
is it networked in any way, on a domain?

After instaling SP2?
try this:

uninstall it.
Does DM come back? yes? go to MS website, download the SP3 installer package (full) and use that - it will include sp2 and all new updates.

if you uninatall sp2 and DM is still not there, hope you have system restore enabled. then go and do a SysRestr to pre- sp2: start-allprogs-accessries-systools-sysrestore

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

I stand as an observer only - I say that FF3 is fine, because from my standpoint it is.

I am not discounting any opinion to the contrary. If there have been issues, then OK, I believe you, and I am kinda NKOTB here so maybe it has been resolved recently and so I never saw it.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

OK. I bet if you play a DVD movie in full screen you get the same issue. Try it and see. It is because you don't have the VGA drivers installed. I bet that the screen is jerky when you scroll down, too. If that is corect then I will give you a walkthrough (This one is special, not straight forward - has the same thing happen on 3 pc in a row before I worked it out.) Oh, and is Standby disabled?

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

I know, why isn't anyone looking at it though? I suppose most people don't like rap... ;-)

so how do I change the thread name, or doI just start a new one with something more ambigious?

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

i've had zero issues with it. Opera has ads doesnt it? Unless you pay? Chrome has issues. Crashes all the time. No skins no plug ins. What version of ff are you running? What add ons? They could be the issue. I have ad and flash filters that work perfectly.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

what happans if you turn it off, unplug for 30 sec from wall, reboot pressing F8 like mad?

should get an options menu that lets you boot normally, or under last known good configuration. try normally first.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

sweet. play later. bed now. 3am here. config tomorrow for 7 machines in 2 networks over 600m WLAN, incl imac (=pain)

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

where is that utility? will it be on the machine? or download?

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

That's a good point. I used to have issues with speed on DW but not anymore. I also have recently started doing it at 3am when our main, singular international exchange is unused.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

The Mobo, not the card. I won't be using it again I don't think. scared me good that one did.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

Does anyone know of a way to disable auto restart on system failure that does not require being in Windows? I've got a laptop that will not start Windows in ANY mode (including Safe Mode) and a blue screen flashes by so quick I can't even read it. I'm wondering if there is anyway to stop that "flash" behavior long enough to read what the BSOD error message is! Thank you.

He didn't use the F8 key. it was just defaulting to the normal menu. the F8 will bring up more options.

If I am wrong then I owe you a rep point.

(What are those for, any way? PM me on that)

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

yea and the only way to beat it is to join it.... back to vista.
unless you have an XP recovery image from Toshiba. that will work better than the downgrade because all the drivers are preloaded.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

just because you have a 4M connection, it does not mean that you are downloading at 4m. it is the max that your ISP will allow you. go to www.speedtest.net at any given time. click a pyramyd and wait a minute. then you will know the true speed of your connection. it needs to be at 2000+ to get youtube streaming. if it only happens when the vid is larger onscreen, it is a driver issue.

let me know.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

once you have done that, while in safe mode go
start-control panel-add/remove programs
and uninstall adobe air. you dont need it and it has caused only trouble on 3 of the 4 pcs' I own.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

I have had the same problem, that is exactly what it is. the problem was that the Mixer had been deleted somehow and I could not fix it. I had to uninstall the base codecs and reinstall. (only adviseable if you have the drivers on a Utilites CD), esp if you are a newbe

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

Hi,
I am experiencing a slower and slower connection to Daniweb everytime I log on, why is this so?

I have tried at several locations on many diferent machines with the same result.

mine is getting faster.

using a tweaked firefox 3.

have you got dialup? if so DW will kill you - at 1mb+ per page at times.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

dude, if you are typing this out, your device manager is not empty.

DM: startmenu-(rightclick My Computer)-properties-hardware tab-device manager

have a look next to your computer name in DM, there is a little + sign. try clicking it. Ipods i think are under removeable media at the bottom somewhere, but only when they are plugged in are they visible in this window.

Back up all your music (ipod stuff is in my music, itunes somewhere. copy the whole lot to another folder elsewhere on your computer, out of the my music folder)

reinstall Itunes/get the latest version from the websie.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

an extreme approach would be to use

Easeus Deleted File Recovery Wizard: the free full version of the program.

It is very good. if it does not find it you can try the Data Recovery Wizard Version. (I have PRO problems with links? find them at http://www.easeus.com/)they have a free version that is scan-only, but if it finds it you need to register to recover the files. I think that is fair enough, because they give away the deleted file recovery tool free.

i think it is around $80, but well worth it if those files are valuable. you could try looking around for freeware, but I wouldn't bother. I have this and it has saved me (client PC's hit by lightning, formatted, 100% data recovery).

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

hows the config?

actually, I read your first post again.

JB is right - why a switch? a switch will do it, but a router gives you more power again, like an inbuilt firewall, filtering, QoS, and if you grab a wireless one, then Wireless Networking as well! (although there are WLAN switches, too.)

so where are you at?
and how many pcs are connected to this thing, anyway?

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

ok+RND

its had a chance to cool off. working again.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

i am REAL unhappy guys.

actually i am kinda glad.

i had not heard of this happening before - Ihave seen agp gfx cards, and modems do it, but USB?

Guess what?

happeneddd to me today.

a USB wifi card. it wasn't working, I touched it (it was up on the wall) said something like "thats' (really) hot" and looked down to see the PC reboot.

it is an asus Mobo, it brings up the 1st screen, pre BIOS. where it says press ?? to enter setup utility and all that jass. and that is all the jazz I get.

so is the Mobo fine you think? just the bios chip? new one for me. those are my thoughts. but it might be easier o get a new mobo maybe.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

Hey. I had to do it myself on a PC tonight. i FOUND THE EASY WAY>>>> YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

when it is booting, force it into safe mode with the F8 Key.

there will be more options than the normal "...entering safe mode" screen, INCLUDING " disable auto restart on system failure"

Dude!!!

enjoy!!!!!!!

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

This vid is cool - high quality.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNXe_3gVz6I

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

I tried but the status and adsl lights stay off.

=not good.

if your router has been reset properly then you should be able to access it by putting one of these in the address bar of your browser:

192.168.2.1
192.168.1.1

these are the usual defaults for routers.

you need to be plugged into one of the 4 LAN ports on the back.

there is a way to find the IP address of the router but yo will need to wait until I can get in front of a network to work out ho to do it again

This is the first step: talking to your router. you need to get this right first.

can you do some googling and find the defaults if it don't work? I dont have time right now. sorry.

I don't use dlink so I dont know all the defaults. anyone else got them?

will need default home page, user and passw to help this person.

thx

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

it was awesome, amazing and inspiring.

and I cannot find it.

the guy looked somewhat like seal i think. he was ripped, topless and his moves were smooth as - well, liquid.

it was a solo to some kind of music, he was the only one. it might have been on a blue type background.

does anyone know it? remember it? have it? got any clues about it? what type of drink was it for/coruba? no - the other drink that came out about that time maybe? I can't remember. but it was the ad that started me off on my dancing oddesey and I would love to find it. please?

in the meantime, check out Seal imitating Micheal Jackson

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

i agree ish. vista will be good. or W7 or what ever.

but most people dont need that stuff. they want email and ebay and dont care how they get it as long as is works and is nice if it is fast./

ever notced on a sys req on the side of a game how vista spec is almost 2x xp? not all bad but hey its how things are. i remeber the rave over the 486 when it came out - with a 100 mb hdd or something. insane. such is 'progress'

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

dude. that was perfect.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

In my country, if the boy had survived (he was old enough to know what he was doing) and it was a kids can do what ever they want and CANNOT BE ARRESTED if uner the age of 16. that is why the gangs here use 'em. they can go in as kids, take what they want and walk out. if they get away 'great' if they get caught, stuff is confiscated and no action can be taken, as long as no weapons were involved. kids are allowed to beat up on teachers and teachers DO NOT have the right to defend themselves in any offensive manner without losing their licence, job and doing time for assault on a minor. the kids are back in school inside 1-3 months.

no problems with crime in this country...

none at all.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

I found Belarc advisor to be brilliant. it was on a win system though. i don't know if the have a linux version. but somewhere near the top it rates your security and if you go in there a whole world of scary attacks can be shut down.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

I know I am a bit late, but if ou go to Ms support, they can retrieve the key for you. she had to do it over the ph for me but it was a weird install anyway. they have an online tool that does it but i cannot remember where.

hotmatrixx 21 Posting Whiz

i am almost speechless. that is funny. LOL man.

if you use a big enough hammer, you will quickly come to the realiseation that the new one is better than the old one anyway. this realisation will soon give way to the understanding of hindsight:

get the new one BEFORE using the hammer.
