Ok, here is my disclaimer:

by downloading the attached file you are acknowledging that anything you use the scripts for is your own problem. I, Brandon Pierce will not be held responsible for any damages to any personal property including, but not limited to any software, the cell phone, or the computer involved. Blah blah, enjoy the files.

I provide no documentation cuz I did this stuff at 2 am and am not famous for my 1337 documenting skills anyways! :) If you have any questions please email me at brandonp@trit.org. Let's not hijack this thread! Please feel free to modify the scripts in any way, but if you publish them somewhere, I would appreciate a little bit of credit! The scripts are weak sauce, and I wouldn't recommend anyone use them. :) I included some PDF files that I found online of some programming manuals. The script phonebook_convert enclosed in the tar file is a simple sed used to convert the output of the phonebook from the t720 phonebook to the format used in my new ericson t616. From what I understand this is some kind of "GSM standard." Hell if I know. :) I don't know working with sed all that well, but I can get stuff done quick and dirty. Don't complain to me if this stuff isn't 150% efficient or whatever. If you know of a better way to do this, then have at it. This worked for me. I tested this with …

I haven't used ME or the 9x series in quite some time but as I recall the folder was:

C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

or:

C:\WINDOWS\Profiles\<some user>\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

In that folder is just shortcuts to your Quick Launch programs. For the "show desktop," the last I remember was that there were a set of files in the C:\Windows folder with the .SCF extension that could be copied to that Quick Launch folder. For example clicking on explorer.scf would open up the windows explorer.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. It's been a while. :)

Not sure of what it is worth, but it is definitely a reliable little cpu. I personally love the celerons from that era. I have a 333mhz that was overclocked to 450mhz. That cpu is strong and stable. I use mine for my file server at home and it is great. I used to have a 1.2ghz machine doing file serving and it was just over kill. If you can't find a price on ebay, or in the Recycler/Pennysaver/etc... then just ask really high, and get him down to a compromise. :)

I think what some of the posters to this thread are losing sight of is the fact that the intent is to capture screens, not dink around with copy-and-paste and graphic-manipulation programs. The advantage of a program like TinyResMeter, SnagIt, or HyperSnap-DX is that a screen-grab is a one-step process. This allows a series of screen captures quickly, if needed--or at the very least, simplifies the process.

Not flame-baiting but I honestly fail to see how use of any one program over another would be more simple:

PrtScrn way:

1.) push Print Screen
2.) paste somewhere
3.) save

External App way:

1.) Load app.
2.) Tell it to capture
3.) Save shot

Each is just as easy and requires no more "dinking" than the other.

I'll be honest. I have a huge bias in the distro choice, and preach Slackware to all. :cheesy: But I will be as far and honest in the matter as I can.

Slackware. It has BSD style init scripts which are very straight forward when cusomizing system initialization at all different runlevels. It can provide a low resource friendly environment, or provide a powerhouse of an OS. I have used it on machines as low as 120mhz/16k cache w/32mb ram and 1gb hd (even running X with blackbox if needed) all the way up to 2ghz 512mb RAM and hundreds of GB storage. Besides obviously the lack of GUI with low resources, the core still performs quick on slow systems. The kernel comes AFAIK totally vanilla, so you don't have to worry about any custom patches interfering with something you want to add on later. The sources can all be downloaded to everything that was built for the distro including the compile options used from slackware. This enables you to build the same software as slackware ships it, while also adding your own compile time option. Very handy! Releases come about twice a year. I would say that the biggest downfall is the lack of corporate support. Lots of commercial software written for Redhat can possibly run on slackware (VMWare for example) with some minor modifications, but not much seems to work "out-of-the-box." For some, this is no big deal, but when you have dead lines and compliancey issues, …

If the reason that you are looking for a new anti-virus is the cost, then you may want to check out http://www.free-av.com/ I have used this free anti-virus program on many of my personal machines and found it to be a great peice of software. I don't know how well it fullfil a corporate environment's needs. (For anyone considering that.) It is much less resource intensive than Norton Antivirus. (Not to bad mouth Symantec but their utilities lately have been pretty resource intensive. )

In Windows, simply push the "Print Screen" key, then open a program such as Paintbrush, and paste it in. For a single window, you can use Alt+Print Screen. This is really simple and doesn't support any fancy options like a timer or anything like that, but it "should" work across all (AFAIK) windows desktops.

The inspiron 8x00 series is commonly known for having screen issues. The hinges flat out suck. I had a Dell technician come out to my house one time (it came with my warranty at the time) and he even said that the 8x00 series is known to have issues because the hinges are too small for the screen and the chasis. As far as I can remember there are also only three screws for the hinges. Quite an odd number if you ask me! If your laptop is covered under a warranty, then let them know that there is an issue with your screen. If you are unsure of your warranty status, you can always go to http://support.dell.com and lookup your warranty information using the "service tag." I believe that we had someone with a problem with the 8200 screen in here not too long ago. Mine is starting to get shot out too. The lid closing/opening doesn't always trip the sensor to tell the laptop to turn the screen back on. Occasionally I have to close and open it again. Hopefully, your laptop is still covered under warranty. If not, find a replacement on Ebay and install it, or have someone else install it for you. Not sure the asking price, but I'm pretty sure it's a lot cheaper than going through Dell for a replacement if it's not under warranty anymore. Good luck, and let us know what happens.

Well, if you have an existing SMP Fedora box I would use that one to compile the drivers, and then copy them to a file. If you don't have a Fedora box, but have some other linux/unix you will have to be very careful to compile for the same architecture, and make sure to compile with static libs. If you use shared you will probably end up with unresolved symbols, or missing files. Your driver will be significantly larger if you compile static but it will probably work much easier. See if the driver has any documentation with it, and go from there. If you are compiling from a different architecture, IE: sparc64, this can be a bit more tricky, though not impossible.

Although My first computer that had Windows 98 on it was an eMachines (I know what you are all thinking), and if I remember correctly, the code was stored on the cdrom somewhere. It seems that this SCSI card is quite troublesome with linux. A quick google/groups.google search will show you this. Do you have another SCSI card that you can use? If not, try using the same machine with Knoppix, or some sort of "live cd" and see if you can get the card working properly that way. From what I have read, the redhat/fedora kernel may not have been configured to fully support this card. Try using a bootable cd to recognize the card, and if not, try another linux distro that you may have. Not one based on Redhat/Fedora though. Maybe debian, or slackware.

APC has done the same thing too. It is really disturbing that these big companies would include such backdoors. All it takes is one disgruntled employee to cause a lot of havoc. Sure, the developers of the systems would know of bugs, and other exploits as they did create the product, but setting up a straight-forward backdoor is a bit much.

To access the file put a \ before the space so that it will read "\ " (without the quotes of course) Then, you can rm/file/vi/etc. the file and figure out what it is. Special characters are often needed to be prepended with a \ in order to be used from the CLI/Regexps/etc.

It may be that the ribbon that connects the screen to the video connector is either loose or damaged. If it is loose, then try to find a quick guide on opening up your laptop, and reattaching it. (Unless you can figure it out yourself of course) If it is busted, then it may be cheaper or more cost-effective to just by another "old" laptop in replacement.

Unfortunately, drivers from linuxant are no longer free for full usage. At least with mine, the speed is now limited to 14.4kbps with the "free" version. Luckily I had an old driver that was released under different terms, back when it was still "free" so full 56k for me! But beware, as the linuxant drivers do cost. Nothing terribly expensive though. It is possible, to install the old motherboard, and then do a "File and settings transfer wizard" from the working installation. This will not copy over your software, but many of the settings for them. Backgrounds, preferences for size/view/etc, IE favorites. This program can also be customized to copy over just about anything else that you want. You have to store the information somewhere, either a second HD, or a network share. This may be a bit of overkill though if you have very little on the HD already. This is a problem when we as humans get impatient. :-/ Usually, with any operating system, not just Windows, it is best to install it on as much of the hardware as it will be using as is possible. At least the same motherboard. Good luck, and let us know what route you end up taking, and what works for you.
