If anyone has any old screen captures of daniweb it would be really great to see some.

You may want to try webwiz forums (they are ASP based rather than PHP so you will need a windows server unfortunately, but it is very good and completely free. I think IPB can be really nice and I think it can be quite alot nicer than vbulletin.

BTW. I wasn't really very impressed by that vanilla thing...

roryt 150 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

I would have thought it was a mixture of css and javascript. I doubt they are actually images (especially the rounded corners). I am sure cscgal will tell you how to do it.

I wondered what you guys thought about these three graphics packages. Which you use and which is your favourite an what your main use is for them.

I have to say Photoshop is my favourite but I did use Paintshop pro for quite a while and that is very good but a bit annoying at times. But GIMP in my opinion is terrible and very hard to use. I DO NOT understand why you have to have "the GIMP" open and then you image in a seperate window.? I mainly use these programs for web graphics and optimizing and editing a few photos. But I ain't no photographer!

Let me know what you think.

Well kind of but thats forgetting the Classic English Breakfast!!!

But fish and chips are really nice here.

The way I learnt was:

Started using frontpage and really basic graphics. I then saw that tables were rubbish and moved to css. That was really when I started learning html properly but after stairing at it in the code window of frontpage it came quick.

Since then I have moved to dreamweaver becuase it makes writing code faster and of course my graphics hav got alot better.

So a friend used to do alot of travelling as a semi-conductor call centre manager. He used to fly most weeks and spend probably most of his time away from his office desk. So obviously because of this he spent alot of time in airports. So basically he made the comment:

"I would much rather have a simple black and white display laptop that was light and the battery lasted for ages rather than a almost desktop style laptop with a high res screen and all the latest gizmos."

I wondered what you guys think to this, remember the circumstances he is talking about though because it is easy to jump to a quick decision.

A google-powered search bar that lets you choose site or internet in the normal place. An absolute essential that microsoft,in their infinite wisdom, still have not adapted

Is this what you put on your sites? I prefer a proper search especially for a professional website because the last thing you want is someone to leave your site and this is probably what they will do if you put a google search on it.

Everyone knows what to expect when they come to daniweb. And I know I wouldn't change it because "IT JUST WORKS" and that is all forum needs to do. I don't think people would really visit you forums more if there were different themes. I really just don't think it is worth all the effort.

One more thing, something that may draw more people to you techno site is a bit more of a techno style design, because although your design is nice and clean it doesn't scream THIS IS THE TECHNO MUSIC SITE YOU SHOULD BE AT 24/7.

roryt 150 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

I think it would be worth just keeping it on the internet for the little money that it costs. And tbh there are already alot of programmer sites and although the same is true for techno music you do atleast have members on that site who would prbably be disapointed to see it go. You should keep posting on the site a couple of times a week when you get a free couple of minutes.

1. Work for more than a week on a personal (unpaid) project, during all waking hours.

Of course, I spend alot of time on this stuff, most days..

2. Gain a more than unhealthy addiction to coffee, and a vampiric aversion to daylight and human contact (ok, maybe I'm not so proud of that one)

I have to say I'm not into coffee, but the whole day light thing thats just scary... Get it off my face and back where it belongs.

3. Use Linux more than Windows

Not quite got into linux yet I am just way to busy.

4. Use two computers at the same time

How do you think I get anything done?

5. Expect everyone else to, naturally, know what you're talking about

Of course, why wouldn't they. Unfortunately they never do :(

6. Run a localhost webserver to save FTPing time

FTP is very quick so seen as scripts are small is it really worth? But of course for testing...

7. Write a programming language

I write in a programming language, does that count? That is just going beyond the realms of geeky.

8. And use it

I don't have a programming language, what are you talking about?

9. Have more friends that are programming languages/concepts than people

...

10. Try to conform to W3C guidelines

All the time, my websites would websites would be …

OK, so I don't have the perfect website and nobody does! But I though it would be really interesting for each person to post one thing they do or put thought into when designing a website, please be specific (eg, NOT usability). So, I'll go first,

Nice, clean navigation that displays text if style sheets are off!

I don't know what the last post means so I will just carry on from the one before:

roryt 150 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Yes obviously but!

Because my folders are done nice and neatly and I do only have one header.php all the links must be done down to http:// otherwise when the html is inserted into the content php the links will break depending on which folder they are in. I hope this makes sense.

Still looking for an answer.. Anybody?

roryt 150 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Another question related to this:

What happens if i want to turn all the parts of my tree into hyperlinks which will need to be from http:// upwards. Eg.

<?php

$variable = ("<a href="http://www.mysite.co.uk/tutorials/">Tutorial</a>&gt;
<span><a href="http://www.mysite.co.uk/tutorials/photoshop/">Photoshop Tutorial Home</a></span>");

include ("includes/header.php");

?>

Basically what happens is the tree goes through each page it is logical to go through to get to the current page and puts them as links and then has the page you are currently on inside span tags which I have used to make the text larger.

any help would be gratefully recieved.

Unfortunately with the current css standards this isn't possible. I would not advise using layers. basically because of the reason you have mentioned.

roryt 150 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

You had me going for a bit but I have cracked it. It wasn't that you were wrong it was that I didn't realise that you had done the include for me too. Thank you very much mate excellent. Please see the gmail invite in your inbox!

roryt 150 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Hi guys,

I still haven't found an answer for this and it is vital for my site. I would be so grateful for any response. I will give a gmail invite to anyone who help me, I promise!!!

roryt 150 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

I really need help with this. If anyone can help me I would be very grateful!!!

roryt 150 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Ok, so I am a total PHP n00b so I will explain my problem then say how I would personally logically solve it.

I am creating a website using a php include at the top of the page (same for every page on the site) and one for the bottom of the page. Basically what I want to do is have (what I call) a tree at the top of my page inside my header include file. By tree I mean something like "Home> Tutorial> Html Tutorial > using tables Tutorial". This would of course change based on the page that is being viewed.

My logical solution:

Instead of my tree text in pure html I would have something like "home + Variable". The variable would then be specified at the top of my html file that is the content for the page.

I hope that all makes sense. I would be really grateful if someone could tell me how to do this using PHP. Thank in advance

roryt 150 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Well obviously it was a marketing gimic and that was kind of my point. Basically we don't need it just makes us feel special.

roryt 150 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

So now free email providers are starting to offer us huge amount of storage for our mail. But do we really need it? Some people obviously do but then I think if you are receiving that much email then you should probably have company email address or your own family one. So my question is how much email do you have in mb on your webmail?

However I realise I have got absolutely tonnes of emails on my hard disk I only have about 200mb on my GMAIL account!

So how much do you have? And do you have a company one as well or is this your only account?

roryt 150 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Connection Type: Broadband
Connection Speed: 2042Kb (2mb)
Cost Per Month: £21 Unlimited
Country:UK
Name Of ISP: Tesco!!! (i know they aren't known for broadband or any telecom service but they are honestly good and I would recommend them for the cheap prices a realiability) I think they run through NTL.

roryt 150 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

I am not completely sure but I don't think flash is capable of this. You may want to think about importing them from another file that you could create in photoshop or another graphics program.

roryt 150 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Well z-index is basically used to set layers up on your page. It could be used to create a layered image almost exactly like in photoshop. It requires absolute positioning on a page and is really not a good idea to use.
