You will only damage your site if you have more than 100 links on one page of your site, of if you have excessive unrelated links pointing at your site. Building quality, relevant backlinks is the most vital promotion tool you have.

The answer is both. Use all in one seo plugin etc, but also as someone else said remember that onpage SEO is what you write. If you mean should you somehow be going into the files and manually entering stuff into tags, then no you shouldn.t and can't anyway.

Ignore PR. Look at getting traffic and converting that traffic once it lands on your site. Would you rather convert one visitor to a paying customer, or have no paying customers but a PR10 ?

Discounts are ok as long as you structure them to draw people in and offer it for a limited time. Make sure that you can sustain the discounted rates, especially on subscription sites.
