Hey folks. Dani and I have been talkig about your valuable comments here. We want to involve the community in our news. We want the news section to be guided by ALL OF YOU, our community. Clearly we need to evolve our news to content that would interest you.

One of the things we're thinking of doing is to ask the community to suggest what we should write about. If there is something in the news that you would like more details and information on, let us know. If there is a topic you are interested in having us cover or perhaps a company or person we should interview or write about, let us know. Products you want reviewed? Suggest them, or even review them yourselves and [if it's done well] I'll promote it to an official DaniWeb review. We're willing to bring you news per your direction.

Please help me make this work by giving us suggestions and feedback. Please get involved and direct YOUR news section. Besides the forums here you have a chance to order our writers to dig up info and news about what you care about. Can you imagine how cool that would be? Will you give it a chance? Who knows what this can evolve into.

P.S. for those of you who don't know me, my name is Eyal, I'm the ed-in-chief of daniweb news :)

wcgug.jpg Last year World Cyber Games brought us a television reality show that crowned the best all-around video gamer WCG’s Ultimate Gamer . Tonight WCG UG Season 2 starts on SyFy and promises bigger challenges, a faster pace, new games and more drama. The winner gets $100,000 cash, a complete Samsung electronics package (any technogeek’s dream), an Alienware Aurora gaming PC and a chance to represent the WCG at gaming events around the world. Each week the players will face-off in a range of video games and real-life challenges while living together in a secluded pen in Los Angeles. Games and game-inspired real-life challenges draw from today’s hottest titles such as Wii Sports Resort , Mario Kart Wii , NHL 2010 , Tekken 6 , Forza 3 , WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2010 and Battlefield Bad Company 2 .

The contestants are selected from auditions held all over the country. These folks are as diverse as it gets but all have one thing in common, the love for video games.

This season’s contestants are:
Yaz Ammari (aka clowN) – 24 years old, owns a tow truck company, mainly plays Counter-Strike
Vanessa Arteaga (aka Vanessa) – 24, office clerk, plays fighting games, best at Dead or Alive
Ryan Burnett (aka I RyBu I) – 24, FedEx driver, Rock Band his favorite

robo_sanford.jpg Telecommuting is one thing but how about actually being there. Imagine you’re working from New York and you need to check up on a production plant in Seattle. Imagine being able to walk around the building in Seattle while sitting at your desk in New York, talking to people around the remote office, going in and out of meetings in the conference room, even keeping a close eye on the production line. Well Menlo Park, CA based Willow Garage is making that possible with their Texai communication systems. Now humans can actually inhabit a robot-like unit (think Avatar minus the blue skin and magical trees, or Surrogates). That’s right you can take over a robot in Seattle, check up on that production plant, then inhabit another robot in Florida and visit the warehouse there, then posses another robot in California and attend a shareholders’ meeting (practically in person)… you get the picture. The possibilities are endless.

Sanford Dickert, good friend of DaniWeb and Texai Product Director at Williow Garage, blew-away the crowd of techies on Tuesday night as he presented at the Tech NY Meetup in NYC. First he remotely visited Willow Garage’s offices in Mountain View and walked around the halls there saying hello to the crew. Then, in a few seconds and a couple of clicks, he inhabited a Texai robot at the home of the creator of Texai robots in Indiana for a quick chat.

Here’s a video from Tuesday night’s …

ecostrip01.jpg Green is in these days, and so is saving money. The EcoStrip 2.0 looks like a common power strip with built-in surge protection but it actually works to save you money while reducing your carbon footprint. The EcoStrip 2.0 comes with a USB connector that you plug into your PC to activate its magic ability. Once connected it knows when you shut down your PC [or Mac], then it cuts all power to the remaining ports on the power strip. Everything else you plug into the EcoStrip stops drawing power the moment your computer is off.

According to the International Energy Agency , the U.S. wastes billions of dollars each year on energy lost to standby power (also known as "Vampire Power") . This means that all those devices we leave plugged in when we’re not using them are actually drawing a lot more power than we think. Many of these devices, such as printers, monitors, speakers and cell-phone chargers, are kept around the computer desk. Together these devices can add 7%-12% to your electric bill, wasting power and costing you an extra $20-$150 per year. The EcoStrip 2.0 aims to reduce that waste by cutting power to all those devices, all you have to do is remember to shut down your PC. Did you know that leaving your PC on draws an average of 50-300 Watts, about as much as a common refrigerator?

Bad Habits
The bottom line is …

How powerful is YouTube?

youtube-logo.jpg It used to be that a person with talent would have to go through the motions, the due process [if you will] of becoming a star. One would have to be discovered or audition and get lucky. In essence one would have to be in the right place at the right time to be given a break. Today, with YouTube that is no longer the case. Or perhaps it is. Perhaps YouTube puts you in ALL the right places ALL the time. greyson_chance.jpg There is no formula, no guarantee that a video on YouTube will go viral and earn a gajillion views but if you've got the right stuff you will be seen, period. Take for example Greyson Chance , the 12 year old boy that got fast-tracked to fame recently. He was recorded playing Lady Gaga's "Paparazzi" at a talent show, uploaded it to YouTube and got over 2 million views in a matter of days. That caught the eye of American Idol judge and talk show host, Ellen Degeneres. She plucked him out of the sixth grade, flew him over and put him on her show the next day. With only three years of piano lessons and no voice lessons at all he is now famous, on his way to a great musical career.

Last Friday marked the 30th anniversary of one of the most beloved and recognized video games of all time, PAC-MAN (released in Japan by Namco). In celebration Google changed it's logo to resemble the board from the game that marked an era. This tribute to PAC-MAN on Google's home page will end today so if you haven't already done so, go to the classic google.com home page and click the button "Insert Coin" to enjoy a blast from the past.

Hit the "Insert Coin" button a second time and you enjoy the 2-player mode that will take you and a friend back to your childhood video-gaming days of Atari and Commodore 64. Player 1 uses the arrow keys, player 2 uses W A S D (the same keys used in today's PC shooter games). Be sure to crank up the volume and let in that classic, original game music and enjoy!

megzin... not to mention, how can this thread be marked as "solved" by the originator if there are two seperate issues being discussed. please start another thread and we'll be happy to offer advice.

WASDted 184 Practically a Master Poster Featured Poster

1) Game publishers need to come up with something new and different, not just sequels to successful games.

2) I'm not if these new figures account for digital delivery of games. Many opt for downloading games through their Valve Steam Account rather than going into a GameStop or Best Buy.

3) Many people are using their "game time" to play social games on the likes of Facebook.

4) Even through the recession people were buying games. Perhaps the bad economy has caught up with the video game market. It will pick back up.

But i do agree that those silly "change world poverty/hunger/inequality" ones are fairly pointless, im more talking about minor policy change that can be done by a specific government.

Agreed. Random petitions about random subjects like "stop world hunger" are pointless and do little if only to unite a small group of people about a cause. BUT, this is different, The ECA is asking people to sign a petition (and by the way you are asked to fill in your full name and address) so they can compile a list of real people with real opinions about a legal issue that is being discussed for us. To the judge or whoever is examining this case these names represent people with interest in this matter. This is actionable. By contrast, put your name on a list to "end world hunger" and who do you expect will do what about it and when and how and with what authority?

@megzin

1) have you re-installed your OS and all updated drivers?
2) have you tried it in another room or another location altogether?

You are right, you have plenty of power for your games. What brand PSU do you have? What brand computer is it? Or did you build it?

WASDted 184 Practically a Master Poster Featured Poster

@bramie there is no way that power supply can run your new config once the video card kicks into high gear. The GF 8500 GT requires a 350W to run properly. You need to consider that your motherboard, CPU, memory, hard drive and video card all draw wattage and that when you run something like a game the draw spikes because these parts run at max or close to max performance. You need a new power supply my friend, and like the others above I believe your recipe calls for at least a 450W, but I'd recommend up to 550W for the extra head room.

WASDted 184 Practically a Master Poster Featured Poster

@Sodabread exactly! We should decide what movies and games we and our kids should not be exposed to. If a person is uncomfortable with a gory game they shouldn't play it. Parents should step up, read the ESRB rating and make a responsible decision for their children based on their age. It is as simple as that. We don't need the government stepping in and banning games for us.

nogame.jpg Hey folks! Here is a matter that is near and dear to my heart. I've always been a gamer at heart and, like many of you, I can always think back and recall the great memories that have included video games. I grew up with the conception and most evolving era in video gaming. At every age, I fondly recall the game that meant the most to me, the games that I connected with the most. Today, video games are part of our lifestyles and, in many cases, are a way of staying connected with friends around the world. I would not want anyone telling me which games I can buy or play. I believe games should have ratings for different maturity levels (like movies and TV shows) but the ultimate choice of which games I play or let my kids play should be mine.

For nearly two decades, elected officials have tried to regulate which video games you can buy, rent and play. Every single time they’ve passed a law, the federal courts have struck it down as unconstitutional. But this may change this fall. It's important to make our voices heard and to spread the word to our friends, family and fellow gamers.

Show your support for free speech and the First Amendment by signing The Gamer Petition. Your signature will be added to the ECA's amicus brief that will be filed with the Supreme Court in Schwarzenegger v. EMA.

When many people think of internet or tech start-ups they automatically think Silicon Valley or California, well I’m here to say that is not true at all. Many great ideas are born from New York, in fact there a very large technology Meetup group [over 13,000 technologists] called NY Tech Meetup that puts on events each month and introduces new companies and ideas to an audience of fellow techies, entrepreneurs and students. At each get-together several companies are selected to give demos and talk about their ideas and products. This May’s event took place at the Haft Auditorium of Fashion Institute of Technology and it featured 7 companies. Here’s a bit about each of them.

GoodCrush lets college students find love without the awkwardness and potential embarrassment of being turned down. Basically, you log onto the site, find your school on the list and create a profile using your school-assigned email address. Then you select up to 5 people you have a crush on. The site then notifies your crush that *someone* has a crush on them [don’t worry Batman, your identity is still safe]. Only if they happen to crush you back will your identities be revealed to one another, then you can Shrek it up and live happily ever after.

Gamers beware. There is an email going around with a subject line that reads something like this: "You Steam will be disabled. Please reactive it." (notice how they cannot even spell "your" properly)

In this email you will find a head banner with the STEAM logo and a couple of links. The link that says "Reactive My Account" takes you to a website that looks exactly like the real steampowered.com site but it is in fact a charlatan, a fake, an imposter. If you click that link you will noticed in the address bar that you are at some South African bank's site [called Bankmed].

This is obviously some poor little hack's attempt to get a few unsuspecting gamers to enter their Steam username and password so he/she steal your identity and use your games, buy more games (on your dime) or worse. If any federalies are reading this you might want to check into that suspicious-looking nerd with no friends in the I.T. department at Bankmed.

Albert Einstein once said "Common sense is the collection of prejudices acquired by age eighteen." -- so I don't expect anyone under 18 to have fallen for this trick.
