make sure you have the latest version and patch, go through the settings very carefully and choose the options and settings that work best for your scenario. it's always good to get to know and understand all the settings and if you are not sure what something is google it and/or post it on daniweb ;)

sinnerFA you are correct. It is the PEREGRINE Glove and I will be reviewing it soon. It is more than just a gaming glove though. Yes you can use it for games but it can also supplement or replace your keyboard in most applications. For example: I've been using it for shortcuts to my tools in Photoshop and it works great, speeds things up for me.

Stay tuned...

so today i'm busy making arrangements for a new DaniWeb Meetup group (our first). We set this up so we can invite you all (techies) to visit and hang out at DaniWeb's HQ on the second Wednesday of every month. We're going to start out by getting techies together, we'll provide free pizza and other refreshments and hopefully this will evolve into something permanent and nice. We're thinking people meet, exchange info, ideas, chat, etc. We watch funny videos or a movie, talk about interesting topics that people will bring up and so on. Maybe eventually we'll have sponsors send swag and prizes to give away.

excitement!

Day 1 of the Intel Developer Forum kicked off with some cool announcements from Intel's CEO, Paul Otellini and EVP/General Manager, David Permutter. IMG_2350.JPG First off Otellini went into some numbers, stating that Gartner estimates each day 1 million PCs are shipped. IMG_2351.JPG Next he reminded us that Moore's Law still lives strong and that Intel is on the way to a 22nm (nanometer) manufacturing process. IMG_2352.JPG He also explained (but not in great detail) that Intel's recent acquisition of McAfee will be integrated with vPro technology to create a truly secure, "trusted" software/hardware relationship. IMG_2353.JPG He went on to mention some additional recent acquisitions and explained that Intel will continue to acquire and integrated companies and technologies to achieve its goals to create a completely harmoneous, ubiquitous and secure ecosystem of connected devices that allow users to access their files and work across many platforms. When asked about Intel's plans to acquire more companies, Otellini stated that there aren't any plans on the table at the moment but they would certainly entertain an acquisition if "the right company at the right price" came along. He also said that Intel is not concerned about having spent 50% of its available cash on recent acquisitions and he is confident in Intel's ability to generate plenty more cash. idf2010.jpgIntel Developer Forum 2010 starts today in San Francisco. The city is decorated from the airport to downtown with banners and ads by Intel with clever catch phrases like “Sponsors of Tomorrow,” “Shake hand with the future” and “Big thinkers, welcome home.” Today is the first of a three day event designed to introduce some new products, technologies and innovation from Intel Corporation and some of its industry partners. The aim is also to gather around “big thinkers” programmers, developers, engineers and designers and encourage them to innovate [with Intel ingredients of course]. On the agenda are some keynotes from the likes of Intel’s CEO, Paul Otellini and others as well as numerous technology showcases, technical sessions, classes and chats.

IDF is hosted at the Moscone Convention Center with special activity stations set up that include Poster Chats, Intel’s Smart TV Pavilion, Wireless Display Zone and an Advanced Technology Zone. Some of the announcements we are expecting are:

Axel Technologies: introduces Fuugo and showcases how Fuugo unites live Broadcast TV with Internet TV. Fuugo is the first TV application for personalizing a content stream by blending content choices from broadcast, mobile, and Internet TV. It utilizes social media, recommendations, and various content sources to create a stream that matches the viewer’s interests.

Fresco Logic and American Megatrends Inc (AMI): come together to deliver the industry’s first SuperSpeed USB 3.0 xHCI 1.0 Solution

Ocosmos and Intel: team up to bring …

I must agree with happygeek.

@jon.kiparsky while your feedback is appreciated and valuable you did go a bit too far in insulting the writers and assuming things that are not claimed. As Lusiphur put it we are trying to provide "additional services and value" for our members" as well as others. I wonder if you are a journalist, if so for how long? I am trying to get a handle on what makes you such an expert on what "poor" writing is. As happygeek put it the NUJPC among others do not agree with you, nor do the number of other publications and even TV news orgs that have referenced and/or quoted DaniWeb.

Again criticism is appreciated but eaaaasy there buddy, try to make it somewhat constructive. We did not really ask if you think DW should have a news section or not, we asked if you all read it, why or why not, and how can we improve it and make it interesting enough to read it.

That said we are taking a bit of a new direction with DW news, scratch that, I'll call it DW "Editorial" and that is as follows:

The aim is to bring content that is more unique to DaniWeb.

1) We are going to try not to bring news that is being covered all over the web already. If we do write about something that is already being covered we will be sure to have something NEW and …

sounds like your CPU is overheating very fast. it is very possible that the seal between the CPU and heat sink has been compromised during your move. check that first of all.

if it starts lasting longer before overheating you might need to completely remove the CPU cooler and re-seat it, making sure to re-apply the thermal paste. you must first clean off the old paste from the heat sink on the CPU and the heat sink on the cooler, then re-apply the paste and be sure to spread it very thin and even across the surface of the CPU heat sink only. I recommend Arctic Silver 5 if you can get some, though there are plenty of decent thermal pastes out there that will do the trick.

All of the above is good general advice but i still believe your biggest problem is RAM. for vista ultimate you should have 3GB if DDR3 or 4GB if DDR2 at least.

What kind of processor do you have? And also what video card are you using? If you have visual enhancements turned on (such as Aero) you will need a powerful 3D graphics card. Be sure to choose a basic windows theme and turn-off any animations and visual enhancements.

i'm not sure what your question is here but generally most motherboards have a qualified memory list. not all brands, types, speeds and latencies can be expected to work with the P6. For example: here is the P6T product page where you can click on the "Memory Support List" tab and down the lists for that board. Stick to a set of the listed memory modules and you'll be fine. Also be sure not to mix different brands, speeds, sizes, etc. You should use all the same modules.

I wish I could tell how to do it but it simply is not possible on MS Word. See this article in PC Mag. Basically you will have to type in the characters that represent the formatting marks as text so they will print. You can use CHARMAP to discover figure out the character codes and paste them in. Good luck!

can you describe the "beeps" a little better? it sounds to me like you might have a bad hard drive, the area that is bad could be where the Windows start-up files are written. short beeps can also point to a memory or video driver problem. once again, when Windows start-up reaches that part it may stop and beep.

WASDted 184 Practically a Master Poster Featured Poster

Hmm, this is quite complicated. Though the part that gets to me the most is "...The policies do not place any time limits on how long DHS can keep travelers’ devices, nor do they limit the scope of private information that may be searched, copied or detained”

I think at the very least they should be required to conduct a search in a timely manner. And even then only if there really a reason to suspect something. I mean I get that someone may try to hide drugs, bombs, parts or other illegal items in a laptop or whatever but why does that give the DHS the right to search their files and private INFORMATION?

WASDted 184 Practically a Master Poster Featured Poster

All i can think of is make sure that one of them is set as the router (not both as repeater) and if you are using DHCP turn it off on the repeater. As for running an ethernet cable between them, doesn't that defeat the purpose of a "wireless" repeater?

you'll have to open up your PC and take a look at the label on your power supply. It will say what the wattage it or at least what the make and model is. As for the RAM, you'll have to take a look at the label on your memory sticks and see what type of RAM you have, then you can purchase matching memory. Based on your system specs I would guess you have 2x 1GB DDR2 RAM but you will have to make sure and also fing the exact speed and specs of the RAM. Again, most of that will appear on the label.

9800 GT should have no problem with those games, and I would recommend 4GB if you have Windows Vista or 7. 2GB might be just enough if you are running XP.

WASDted 184 Practically a Master Poster Featured Poster

welcome to the jungle! you'll have a blast here.

@NicAx64 - yes but what's the largest SSD you can get? 512GB tops? and how much would that cost? a 256GB SSD goes for around $1000 and a 512GB for nearly $2000. Suddenly a 600GB SAS drive for under $500 doesn't sound so bad, eh?

WASDted 184 Practically a Master Poster Featured Poster

yeah i doubt there will be a WMP12 for XP at all. microsoft EOL'd XP a while ago and soon they will stop supporting it all together.

WASDted 184 Practically a Master Poster Featured Poster

Here's how these cards are similar:
- both are DX10
- both support a resolution up to 2560x1600
- both 512MB of GDDR3 (256-bit) memory
- both support SLI

Here's how they differ:
- the GTX+ will cost you about $50-$60 more
- the GTX+ runs hotter
- the GTX+ takes up 2 slots (GT only takes 1)
- the GTX+ has faster memory and core clocks
- GTX+ has more CUDA cores (128 vs. 112)
- GTX+ supports 3-way SLI (GT only 2-way)

What would you like to use it for? Gaming?

How many available slots do you have?

Most importantly, the question of whether your PC can take either of these cards depends on what kind of power supply you have. The GTX+ requires at least a 450 Watt PSU while the GT needs at least a 400 Watter. I'd make sure to have some headroom (a true 500 Watt PSU would be ideal).

You should also make sure you have proper airflow and cooling to accommodate the extra heat as these cards are in a different class than your X1550.

On a side note: upgrade the RAM if you can. 2GB is a bit low for almost any application you would need such powerful video cards for, but it should work.
