You may have a bios limitation harddrive size of 32 meg . If it were mine i would use a win98 boot floppy and go to fdisk and create partition and format it . no win98 boot disk get one here , www.bootdisk.com

if you have second partition with enough space to install 64bit winxp ,then do it ,it will not interfear or use same system files as the 32 bit os .

most likely downloading zips from gray area sites with[for] passwords ,If so you need to revisit the site and find the password there .

when you die c:\ try going up one letter to D:\ or even e:\ ramdrive means the dell diagonists is running from your ram ,also if the drive was clicking and noisy it might well be dead .

Explorer 7 is Beta ,meaning in testing ,so not really reccomended that you install it on a main computer that you want to work like a charm! unintall it and see if it fixes the problem .
