Gooday. As you were the only people that could solve my last problem, hope you can help here. Every now and then my computer freezes. Everything is still on the screen but everytning stops, I have to push the reset button. It might do it 3 times in an hour and then it might not do it for a day or two. I am running xp professional, 768 ram and 80gb hhd. It is a pc.

could be over heating , could be you are over taxing the cpu at time of freeze up,open tower and check fans for dust build up

When I replace this material will that stop the fan from being very loud?

Any help would be appreciated.

thermal grease/paste as it is referred to ,the lack of will not make your fan noisy ,fan is noisy because of something you did in removal or replacing it ,make sure it is in flat .
thermal paste ,some brands are better than others but you need to get some soon,so what ever brand you can get will do for you!!

just an example .

if by chance dell gave you a winxp cd ,you can boot to it and do a "R" for repair and at the prompt type in , chkdsk /f

if you don't have xp cd you could get xp boot floppy set from microsoft and use them .
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=310994

this is most like caused by the windows updates ,making change to a device file or .dll file that something like the video device was using

only thing i can offer is to go into IE,tools /internet options connections /settings and make sure all is set to keep connection open .

IE doesn't show up in add and remove programs because its part of the windows install.but it in add and remove if you go to add windows components on the left pane ,if you go to help and about internet explorer ,to see the version when you are in ie,

with no cdrom in the laptop its not going to be easy , i once loaded win98 on a laptop with no cdrom ,i did so by removing the harddrive and hooking it to my computer via usb to ide cable i have ,i then made 2 partitions one big one small ,i then copied the win98 folder from the win98 cdrom and then using a win98 boot floppy i ran the setup install from the win98 folder on partition 2,i would think this could be done winxp ,but i have never tried it ,just with win98 .

you could get a win98 boot floppy from www.bootdisk.com and check the hardrive to see if anything is left on it . dos commands to use with the boot floppy .
