I've got a Compaq PC. The CD drive was not working so installed a used drive yesterday. Now, when I start the machine, it only gets through a short part of the boot-up process then stops at a blank screen with a rapidly flashing cursor. I'm wondering if I have a bad CD drive or do I need to install a different set of drivers?

depending how you have the cd install on the ribbon cable ,make sure the jumper on the back of the cdrom is set right ,master or slave .

Here's the latest update. I downloaded Registry mechanic, ran it, and it found something like 200+ problems. After I had it fix them, it seemed like my computer ran noticably faster and control panel clocked the processor at 1.66 Ghz! Once I restarted the computer, however, it dropped back to 513mhz. Registry mechanic wasn't able to fix all of the problems for some reason...maybe somebody knows why.

where are you getting the 513 reading from!

I am new at this, so if this is in the wrong spot, please forgive me.
I need help solving the following:
I have to reboot my computer everytime I need to use it because if I leave it on to hibernate I cannot connect to my dial up provider. I get the following message:
"Rundl 32 has caused an error in Kernel 32 Dll, Rundel 32 will now close."

I also have been getting other error messages:
"wpwin10 has casued an error PFIT lDO DLL" or
"wpwin10 has casued an error in an unknown.."

I am novice... Hopefully somebody can help me.
thanks,
bevecu

First i would disable hibernate as its one buggy windows option in my opinion .if you don't know how to disable .right click on you sesktop /properties/screensavers/poweroption and hibernat and disable it .
the other error is word perfict releated ,i have no idea how to fix it .
Not sure but you may find some help here .

Sp2 won't download.

Basically i got my computer back from the factory today so it was completely bare so i connected it to the internet to install sp2, avg virus scanner, and ad-aware then all these problems started.

Would a anti hijacker help? coz that was sorted out my comppter last year when i had loads of probs.

I've read a previous thread belonging to someone whose IE launched on startup, followed the instructions u gave him (Run Hijackthis) but I could not find the problem lines he had in my log.

Hi. My brother recently got cable internet for his old computer. It is

an Inteva with Windows 98 Standard Edition. I believe this computer is 8

years old or so. It is a Pentium 2 , 300mhz, 196 MB of RAM computer. I

call this ancient. I had to install an ethernet card in one of the empty

PCI slots. I did this an installed the software. Then hooked up the

cable modem to it and it has activity between the 2. However, when I try

to connect to the internet it just won't do it. I was on the phone for

an hour with a tech support guy from Adelphia trying just about

everything. Mind you it was the cable company and not a Windows 98

expert. I'm guessing the problem lies within Windows 98 somehow. I

thought it might be because the computer had probably way too much stuff

in it so I uninstalled alot of the programs in it. Then installed a

program I found on the net call Advanced System Optimizer. I cleaned the

registry and all the other things it did. I also ran a scan disk for

errors and there weren't any errors. Then I defragmented. Still no luck

connecting to a website. I'm almost at the point of reformatting the

computer which I have never done before. I'm not sure the best way to go

about doing that. That computer came preloaded and the place I bought it

from did all the settings …

The picture is on my hard drive. It is in a folder of copied pictures that I made to use for my wife's screensaver. When her screensaver came up, the hard drive made a "peculiar" sound that got my attention. I'm trying to delete the entire folder of pictures but anytime I access the folder/pictures the hard drive starts making the noise and the machine stops responding.

could be the screensaver program is using them 1
you could try deleting through the CMD prompt

This process will clean out your Temp files and your Temporary Internet Files. Please do both steps:

Step 1:Delete Temp Files
To clean out your temp files, click on Start and then run, and type %temp% and press the ok button.

This should open up the temp directory that your machine uses. Please delete all files that are found there. If you get an error when deleting a file, skip that file and delete all the others. If you had trouble deleting a file, reboot into Safe Mode and follow this step again. You should now be able to delete all the files.

Step 2: Delete Temporary Internet Files
Now I want you to open up Internet Explorer, and click on the Tools menu and then Internet Options. At the General tab, which should be the first tab you are currently on, click on the Delete Files button and put a checkmark in Delete offline content. Then press the OK button. This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes. When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

That's logical. If it's indeed the same engine they share DLLs.
Many programs have very messy uninstallers that don't check whether DLLs are used by others and just delete anything they may have installed themselves...
