OK. Here's the latest. (the deeper I go, the stranger it gets)
1) Outlook Express is working fine since the Internet Explorer download.
2) I did the SFC thing and 4 or 5 files were replaced / fixed. It never prompted for the Windows 98 disk. Nero still freezes at the "burn" or "simulate" command.
3) I checked in Device Manager and nothing was marked with any yellow or red !'s or x's.
4) I went into Hardware Profile with the intention of copying some computer specs for you and, where there is usually a long list of specs, there is now a prompt talking about creating different hardware configuration profiles, etc. It has a highlighted "Original Configuration" with options to "Copy" or "Rename". Would this be referring to our setting up the Creative CDRW RW8438E in the Device Manager (see previous posts)? I'm afraid to do anything here without some guidance.
5) Computer specs:
Processor - Pentium III 650MHz (L1 cache: 32.0 Kb, L2 cache: 256.0 Kb) Ext.clock: 100 MHz
Memory - 128 Mb (130 424 Kb) BANK_1: 128 Mb(DIMM,SDRAM,70 ns)
Hard Disk - 20 Gb (9.66 Gb Free)
OS - Microsoft Windows 98 SE U.S. English 4.10 (build 2222 A) {07505-OEM-0089164-98807} installed: 16-Mar-2005 (reinstalled actually)
Burner software - Nero 6.6.0.8 (previously used Nero 6.1.3.25 - this was in use when the problem started, also tried my original Nero 5.0 before getting the new

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Oh, yea. One other thing.... When in Device Manager, I noticed that "Properties" for the Creative CDRW rw8348E had a box that said "Disconnect" which was checked off. I unchecked the box and it still made no difference. Nero still froze at the "burn" command. Bad idea? Good idea? Change it back? Leave it?

I wish i had win98,it been a few years ,i use xp but i would leave it unchecked for now .

Ive been having this problem with my ati display driver so my teacher recomended that I download another one which I did and a message showed up that said "Setup was unable to find components that can be installed on your current machine". Does anyone know how to fix this problem? I have Windows Xp if that helps.

its either the wrong one or its a zip file maybe, and needs to be unziped first before the wizzard will recognize it as a driver file .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. Since Temporary folders are emptied now and then (the files are DELETED), it would not be a good idea to have your backups there. Those backups would be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

1. Please go to you're 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' then name the folder 'HJT'.

2. Copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Have Hijack This fix the following by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and selecting fix checked. Make sure all browser and all Windows Explorer windows are closed before fixing.
You might want to print out or copy & paste to notePad , these instructions as you will need to close this browser window to fix with hijackthis !

Thanks for your reply Caperjack - WinXP Pro doesn't have exactly the same features as XP Home-Edition. The XP Home Edition (if I remember correctly) has the ability to manage popups in the "Tools" menu - XP Pro doesn't seem to have anything to manage these with.

I can't see anything running in the task manager

Maybe it's time to make the jump to Mozilla

Hi ,I have 2 computers here and one is home one is pro ,and they both have popup control in tools .they are both using IE sp2

A switch to Firefox is way over due ! I like it , I Like it

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Hi folks - I have an odd sort of problem that I don't think has been addressed here: I can't stop the popup blocker in IE6. I'm running winXP pro, up to date, and IE6.0. I had the Google toolbar installed and started having trouble with too many popups being blocked whether I was trying to allow them or not. I de-installed the Google toolbar and rebooted but the status bar in IE is still showing that pages are being blocked. I can't find any control for popups under IE6 tools menu. It seems I have this rogue blocker doing a great job blocking just about everything.

Ideas?

Thanks - Mark

if you are using the XP SP2 popup blocker the next time the yellow bar comes up telling you its blocking a popup ,right click on the yellow bar and you will find options to go to change the way it handles popups ,also the ALT or is it the Ctrl key anyway one or the other ,will allow a popup you know is comming and you want it to come up .

PLEASE HELP ME! I have this really ennoying problem: every now and then (almost every 30 secs) my computer display is getting light green (well not the whole display but it is blurred green if you know what i mean) I don't know what to do! I don't really know what kind of computer I have... :o I only know i have windows xp home edition version 2002...now for 1 hour the greenyness won't even go away anymore!! Please help me!
bye, Raven
p.s. sorry for my terrible english!

Make sure that were the monotor connect to the computer is on tight and right!

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

That sounds more like a software problem than a hardware problem
You could use one of the Linux LiveCD's to test it without installing anything to the hard drive... (You may even like it...)

I agree with Carperjack...
Except...
I prefer Fat32 over NTFS drive format

ntfs is suppose to be more stable ,also you can create larger files with it than fat32 up to 2gig if i remember what i read awhile back

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

try right clicking on an image ,choose open with ,if photo image is there choose it if it not there then choose othere programs and fine it there .
Also to edit the program that opens you images go to mycomputer /tools/folder options /file types and edit there the program you want to use for opening you image file types .

Also you may want to reinstall photoshop if you created all the images with it and saved them as adobe file types ,and adobe did cost you a lot of money just to have it sitting on the shelf ,didn't it !!!

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

I tried the monitor on an old desktop and it works. The problem might be with XP but I can't reinstall at the start up.

If you are ok with reinstall xp ,you could use a win98 boot disk and fdisk and remove the non dos [option 4 ] partition and create a new one ,then reboot format it and then boot to the xp disk ane reformat in ntfs ,and reload winxp maybe !!

Sorry again. The other part of your reply referred to reloading my motherboard driver from the disk that came with the computer. I'm not sure I know what that means. I used the Microsoft Windows 98 second edition disk. Is that it? There was also a Nero 5.0 / Prassi abCD / Creative disk that came with the burner way back when I bought it but although I've searched all over it, I can't find anything that has helped me.

Usually the computer will come with a disk labeled motherboard drivers .but win98 will load most generic stuff ,when you were in device manager was there any idems marked with a yellow or red ! or x,if not you should be all right ,you just need to work on why the programs are locking up.
some specs on the computer might help .like how much ram you have and the processors speed and so on .thanks .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Sorry, yes, I meant Outlook Express. What happened was I got a "Outlook Express could not be started because MSOE.DLL could not be loaded" message (or something close to that). Downloading Internet Explorer 6 remedied that problem.
Back to the problem at hand: I just went into Device Manager and removed the [CD ROM Drive] as it was listed. After the reboot, Windows said it was loading the new driver. Sure enough, Device Manager listed Creative CDRW RW8438E in the proper spot. Oh boy! This could be it! I thought to myself. BUT.... No go. Nero still freezes as soon as the burn commences. I am baffled and so very frustrated here.
Is there any other possible thing I could try????
Is there any information that I have left out that might be relevant????
Everything has worked great for years, right up until the Windows reinstall.

First the outlook problem ,check this site and see if this helps with outlook
Microsoft outlook
for the freeze problem let check for missing or corrupt system files .
Go to Start/run and type in SFC ,you may need to put the win98 disk in the drive ,when prompter to replace a missing or corrupt you will have to direct it to look in the cdrom .

Hi Caperjack,

Yes I have tried to delete the game, using CCleaner that I downloaded. So I have now removed it from the add/remove program list, but when I put the game disk in, it still only has an uninstall option. When selected nothing happens. I also found a repair option in the games folder, but after waiting for ages while it configured the game, it still doesn't work. The game is obviously still lurking on my pc somewhere, but I can't find it to remove it! Any suggetions?

not sure ,i would look around the c:\ program file ,folder for a folder with the games name or the maker of the game on it and delete that ,also i would search the registry for it ,but as you are a novice computer the registry is no place for you to start editing .sorry .

Hello. I run Panda Software for my antivirus software. When completing a recent scan Panda found the Trojan Mitglieder.BO virus. It said notified but not deleted or quarantined. Does anyone know how to get rid of this virus? It is slowing my system down so much it's ridiculous. I also have a problem with NTVDM.EXE. It keeps opening by itself and using 100% of the processor freezing the system. Any ideas on getting rid of this. The only way I can stop it is by going into task manager and closing the process. A few hours later it will start up randomly again. Thanks for any help anyone can provide. :)

Hey, I don't really know what the problem is, but sometimes my computer just freezes up for no reason; I have no idea what the problem is because I run spyware scans regularly and virus scans as well. It used to happen with very little frequency, maybe once a week or so; it happened three times today -_- so I think it might be getting worse and worse. Can anybody help me? I'm sorry that it's vague, but I don't really know what's up with it. Should I just try reformatting?

What you are discribing could be you processor fan getting dirtier and dirtier ,and causing you process to over heat and shutdown !! turn off computer open case and have look , if it looks clean leave the case off and run computer and see if it still freezes ,with the case open it won't get so hot .

the sites button under / tools / internet options / security /trusted sites/sites is disabled. But I figure people in this forum would know how I could fix the problem.

Looks like it the problem that I had with the webpages healed itself.
Now I'm having problems viewing web content in my folders. It gives an error message saying: "Your current web settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page. As a result, the page may not display properly."

So I have to switch to classic folder mode.

Can anybody help?

Alright, got that one working.

New question: I got my iso file (Linux installer something).... and it's too big a file to fit on a CD, I'd need a DVD-R. Is there any way I can just 'extract' it or something to my hard drive and run it from there? I'd rather not go and spend a hundred bucks on a DVD burner.

First yes there is a way to do that with a iso file ,with the virtual drive created with alcohol120 or nero ultra ,for programs that you want to install in windows ,but i dont think it will work for what you want to do ,you want to install linux ,so you don't want to install that within windows .

Are you just assumming its to big because of it size or did you actually try and burn it and get the error message that it will not fit the disk !

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

where did you store them for the format .
I just go to the backup folder and right click and copy the files ,then go the the new outlook store folder and open it an paste the old in .,that is if you backed them up right in the first place .
open outlook /tools options/maintenence /store folder to get the path to the new folder .
